Obama demands 'concrete proposals' on gun violence by January

President Barack Obama empaneled a new task force led by Vice President Joe Biden to develop comprehensive proposals to address gun violence no later than next month.

In the wake of last week's shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., the president announced a new initiative that would include members of his cabinet and outside organizations to generate proposals to rein in gun violence. He said that any effort should include new restrictions on guns, but also improved access to mental health services and better management of violence in popular culture.

Obama vowed that the new task force would not be just another Washington commission, shorthand for the groups sometimes tasked with studying an issue or event but which often delay or dilute solutions long past the time when the original impetus for such a panel has passed.

President Obama announced Wednesday that Vice President Joe Biden will be developing proposals to curb gun violence, some of which may include banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity gun clips or magazines. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Obama said he had asked Biden "to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals, no later than January," which the president would then push "without delay."

"This is not some Washington commission. This is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read, and then pushed aside," the president said. "This is a team that has a very specific task: to pull together real reforms, right now."

Obama expressed support -- restating the position of his press secretary, Jay Carney -- for certain gun measures, including the assault weapons ban, limits on ammunition and closing a loophole allowing gun buyers to elude background checks at gun shows. But he stressed that those were only components of a broader effort to address violence.

The president suggested that stakeholders in those deliberations could possibly include the National Rifle Association -- the gun rights group that had gone silent in the wake of the Newtown shooting, but will hold a press conference on Friday. The president argued that mothers and fathers who compose the NRA's membership had also been impacted by the Newtown shooting.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden arrive at an announcement on gun reform in the James Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House December 19, 2012 in Washington, DC.

"Their task is going to be to sift through every good idea that's out there, and even take a look at some bad ideas before disposing of them," Obama said of the task force's efforts.

Already, Democrats on Capitol Hill have started to initiate some gun control efforts in the aftermath of Newtown. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called Wednesday for Republicans to bring up a vote on high-capacity ammunition magazines by this weekend. And West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D, introduced legislation to study the impact of violent video games on children.

Additionally, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has said she'll bring up a bill to reinstate the lapsed ban on assault weapons of the first day of the next Congress.

Few Republicans have stepped forward to embrace any of these gun measures, though, and have focused instead on the need for improved mental health services, or school safety.

Obama said his task force's proposals would make up part of his State of the Union address, and he expressed hope that the searing images from last week's shooting in Connecticut would last in the public conscious and help advance his eventual proposals.

"I would hope that our memories aren't so short that what we saw in Newtown isn't lingering with us -- that we don't remain passionate about it, only a month later," he said.

It is really pathetic to read the numbers of posts all over the internet that seem to want to play down this tragedy and wish there were less coverage. They wish it to just go away These people should be ashamed. This was a slaughter of innocent children each shot multiple time. Those of you with such hard hearts, worrying only about your guns should take another look at this horrendous event. Where is your empathy or humanity? This is an infamous series of heartbreaks and will not be forgotten by millions of us for many many years. NRA take note!

Since the Congress is hired to come up with all laws, the House specifically, where does the Vice-President and the outside organizations(i.e. lobbyists) come into play. Just like the healthcare bill, written by outsiders, most law makers didn't even read the thing.

An outsideritten gun-control law will probably involve a few million for blind butterfly research and other useless items. Besides the Constitution being averted to make this new law, makes me wonder how many Constitutional issues the law will try to bypass.

There is no question that we need to overhaul gun control but we must realize that Reagan closed a great many mental institutions and we have many families that cant afford mental health assistance. We are so behind other countries when it comes to caring for our mentally disabled. We need to ramp up mental health care. Think about this, a mother knows that knows her child is mentally unbalanced and takes her child shooting. I blame the mother for being in denial. how sad.

If you are going to make an argument, at least get your facts right.

Reagan didn't close down any mental institutions.

The ACLU sued the State of California on behalf of patients that they said were held against their will. That led to the Lanterman-Petris Act, a bipartisan bill passed by the State legislature and signed by Reagan that changed the laws on forcible detention in mental health institutions.

The Lanterman–Petris–Short (LPS) Act (Cal. Welf & Inst. Code, sec. 5000 et seq.) concerns the involuntary civil commitment to a mental health institution in the State of California. The act set the precedent for modern mental health commitment procedures in the United States. It was co-authored by California State Assemblyman Frank Lanterman (R) and California State Senators Nicholas C. Petris (D) and Alan Short (D), and signed into law in 1967 by Governor Ronald Reagan. The Act went into full effect on July 1, 1972. It cited seven articles of intent:

                • To provide prompt evaluation and treatment of persons with serious mental disorders or impaired by chronic alcoholism;
                • To guarantee and protect public safety;
                • To provide individualized treatment, supervision, and placement services by a conservatorship program for gravely disabled persons;
                • To encourage the full use of all existing agencies, professional personnel and public funds to accomplish these objectives and to prevent duplication of services and unnecessary expenditures;
                • To protect mentally disordered persons and developmentally disabled persons from criminal acts.

The Act in effect ended all hospital commitments by the judiciary system, except in the case of criminal sentencing, e.g., convicted sexual offenders, and those who were "gravely disabled", defined as unable to obtain food, clothing, or housing [Conservatorship of Susan T., 8 Cal. 4th 1005 (1994)]. It did not, however, impede the right of voluntary commitments. It expanded the evaluative power of psychiatrists and created provisions and criteria for holds.

I suspect you are correct, I don't know for sure. The ACLU has a history of granting freedom to carnivores into a sheep lea. Personally, I feel that the pharmaceutical industry is VERY suspect in some of these crimes but they have money. Some of the "depressed" people are dosed with experimental drugs, some agencies are paid for such trials. Nobody on an experimental drug should be allowed total freedom. But then again, the ACLU will disagree.

Instead of talking nothing but BS why not address the real truth. The morals of the American people have pretty much disappeared. Parents do not do their jobs. Blaming this tragedy on guns is a total farce. Why not be honest and put the blame where it belongs, the lack of morals in the American people.

Want to stop this sort of thing banning guns won't work. If someone is hell bent on killing people they will find a way to do it with a gun or not. McVey killed far more people with nothing more than fertilizer and diesel fuel. The 9/11 terrorist killed over 3000. Not a single gun was used.

Blaming guns is nothing more than a feel good, pat me on the back for doing something bunch of BS. It is a show, nothing more.

The law of unintended consequences: President calls for a study to consider reducing "gun violence" (whatever that really means), and the next few days more "assault" rifles, large capacity magazines, and ammunition are sold than in any similar time period in U.S. history. The odds are that if you are an adult and don't own a gun, you are in the minority.

We now have 290,000,000+ firearms (89 per 100 people, according to some survey I read.) in "civilian" hands (are gang members "civilians"?), and probably another 50,000,000 in the hands of various law enforcement and other government employees, not to mention how many millions within the borders in military hands. That's right: there are more guns inside the U.S. then there are people. How the government is going to take on the task of making all children safe is going to be a challenge.

If Obama was really concerned about excessive deaths of Americans, he should focus on Alcohol related deaths. The latest figures show over 75,000 people a year die from some sort of Alcohol abuse. Thats around 207 people a day, 10 times the number of deaths in Conn. As tragic as the murders were in Conn., why are we ignoring the hugh loss of life from alcohol. Is it because everybody drinks and thinks they drink responsibly, so nothing should be done. The same thing applies to gun owners. The majority of gun owners are law abiding responsible citzens. More laws and taking away weapons from people who are already obeying current laws will not have any effect on people who want to harm others. Just like making more laws against drunks will not stop DUI's. What we need to focus on is whats causing these young people to commit these acts of violence. I'm over fifty, was raised around guns, all our neighbors had guns, all our relatives had guns and people drove around with loaded guns in a gun rack in their pick-ups. Never did any of these types of crimes occur. In the last 15 to 20 years we have raise our children around TV violence, excessive movie violence and extremely violent video games. We've raised at least two generations of children that think violence is the norm. You don't see 40,50, or 60 year old people committing these crimes. We have to look at what message are we sending to our children and what values are we allowing their young minds to embrace.

This is a Mental Health Issue and Not a Gun Control Issue, what common thread has ran through the last 5 or 6 massacres? They have been perpetuated by folks who are severely mentally ill, were there warning signs, Yes, in every instance they had interacted with someone in an irrational way that should have prompted treatment and isolation to protect themselves and the general public. This is a blatant failing of the Mental Health System, my Wife works for a Behavioral Health Organization, those Organizations right now are unfunded and sick themselves. How in the heck do we expect to stop this until we are willing to invest in the care and treatment of those fragile individuals who would do harm to themselves or others? Ban all the Assault Weapons you want, the Problem is still going to be there screaming fix me. Hollywood and the Gamers own a big piece of this too, you can't expose children to the daily carnage in the movies and the games and not desensitize the mind to violence. This is a simply a Feel Good Do Nothing Power Grab. Treat the Problem.

Who's going to treat all these people? The plethora of psychiatrists and psychologists just standing around doing nothing? I don't know about your community, but I've practiced medicine in a few different parts of the country now and I always run into the same problem; long waits for mental health treatment.

Alternatively, we can just reinstitute the institution and stick them in there. We've tried so hard to 'integrate' these people into society (school, work accomodations, etc) and we have to face the fact that some people just can't....be...assimilated.

                            #2296.1 - Fri Dec 21, 2012 8:34 AM EST

Mostly because of all the bleeding hearts out there. No one is to blame for their actions. It is the environments fault. My child is just as good as anyone else's and should be allowed to be in the normal classroom instead of seperated. They just take a little longer to learn things. My child has every right to be promoted. He/She can catch up the things they didn't quite get and they will be alright. Yes Billy has some anger issues, but he is okay most of the time. A timeout is all he needs and he'll be okay. On and on and on go the excuses.

I suppose if we had mental healt professionals that really cared about helping people or at least being able to diagnose the problem instead of working on the 'emotionally upset' that can afford $250 an hour. We may be able to get adequate screening when problems are suspected or noticed. No can't do that, it is 'profiling' if someone says another child or person appears to be a little off.

Who's bright idea was it to assimilate disturbed children into the classrooms? I know some very good Special Needs teachers that really care about their kids that are pulling out their hair because thay are tasked with making sure those children learn at the same level and speed of the 'normal' children. They spend more time doing crap that has nothing to do with teaching and dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's becasue of the enormous amount of governemtnt regulation crap.

I have a lot of respect for teachers and the few ramaning ones that actually care like those at Sandy Hill, are rare, but with all the crap they have to endure I am not surprised that some children turn into kids like Lasky.

Now that I had my rant you can all go back to yours.

Have a Blessed Day, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. I will continue to pray for the families that lost their children and hope that God will one day be able to return to our classrooms and be reintroduced to our communities. Oh that probably offended someone. So What.

We have to reintroduce God to get some fear back into the people. When you think there's a bad place you're going to when you die, that's more than enough to keep you in line. That's why religion exists, has existed ever since people started living in organized structures.

The U.S. Department of Justice re-confirmed in December 2004 that the Second Amendment is very clear in that it pertains to individuals. It also confirmed that the term "militia" referred to a citizen militia comprised of adult male civilians, not a governmental agency such as the National Guard.

What has very clearly been neglected, however, is the latter part of the Second Amendment which very clearly states that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" (emphasis added by this author). And yet our right is being infringed on a constant basis from all levels of government. And the U.S. Justice Department seems to come up empty-handed when it comes down to enforcing its position on an individual right.

Settled. Now all of you radical gun control freeks can find something else to rant about and ban. Until you change the constitution you have no leg to stand on. That isn't going to happen because of the second ammendment. It is also there to protect the people against a government going rouge in order to prevent tyranny.

When you get a grasp of the truth and all the facts instead of listening to idiots like Obama, Feinstien, Holder, and Pelosi, Make a informed decision on what you want and then go find the country that best suits your liking.

Expect the Goverment to proteting you? Look at Benghaze. THey could give a rats butt about protecting anyone except themselves. It is up to us as individuals to make sure our homes, families, and neighbors are protected and that includes 'from government'.

Deal with the real issues and get off your soapboxes about violating our Constitutional Rights. Build more prisons and mental health facilities and hold people accountable for their actions instead of making excuses for them and stop codoling the criminals in this country. People are responsible for their actions not inanimate objects.
Lock down our borders and stop letting illegal immigrants in. You want to legalize drugs now because that WAR is failing. You condone actions like Fast and Furious, but want to prevent our citizens from being able to protect themselves agains the very people Obama and Holder allowed to have those Weapons.

Stop your hypocrasy. The very idiots in Washington on both sides beleive they are greater than the common citizen and should live by the same rules everyone else does. Nothing in our Constitution gives them the 'power' they have amassed. It is time to take that away and make them do their real jobs. Obama is a dictator. He isn't doing anything but telling people what HE wants and Deamanding things. He is like a spoiled child. Blaming everything and everyone else for his incompetance.

Well we do have him for four more years, but his wings can be clipped if the House would only do its job, but that won't happen either since they are as much part of the problem.

What is it that allows this sort of tragedy to happen? Accessibility! How do you limit accessibility? There are two points of accessibility that were not maintained, one is the accessibility to the weapons the the person used- this is the Mother's fault. No question that she gave access to the man when she herself knew better but was not willing to impede his access due to his rights (in her mind). The second point of access is the school, this is a scary thought for all parents but the schools need to be upgraded to meet the new threats and issues of today's society. It is hard for us to fathom the thought that we should baracade ourselves and our kids into bunkers just to feel safe but had the school been less accessible it would not have happened. Look, I am not one for knee jerk response but I think some responsible thought needs to be incorporated here. It is darn near impossible to mark every crazy person or wacko that lives near us, or to identify these individuals for that matter but we can limit their access to our children and as responsible parents all viable options need to be investigated. First and foremost, if there is an indication of someone's mental capacity that will bring into question public safety it should be addressed, but care must be taken when labelling people as this may be an infringement of one's rights. For example just because someone seems to be talking to themselves while walking down the road could label an innocent person who is simply talking to someone on the phone using an ear bud. Also there are those who could and would use this kind of system to vilify an enemy or an annoying neighbor, so this may cause more hysteria and paranoia. But it could possibly get some needed help for those truly who need it. But again you will not catch all of the wackos, so more needs to be done on the second side of the accessibilty. When we live in tornado alley we build our houses to withstand high winds, or we place reinforced cellars for hiding in until the tornadoe passes right? Or if we live on the water front we either place our homes higher than the flood plane or place it on stilts to stay dry, right? How about small business owners that have shops in higher crime areas, don't they reinforce their protective glass and bar their doors and windows, right? We need to limit the accesses to our children, whether from this type of threat or even the less dramatic and just as traumatic tragedies of abduction. It is a different world from the past when we could leave our doors open at night when going to bed. Unfortunately new world problems need new world solutions I personally care less about the appearance of a school and its asthetics than the safety and care of my children. If schools need to look like prisons then so be it. For us it is a place of safety and higher learning for our children, but to the crazed killers of the world it has become a target-rich environment, and our soft underbelly. It is a place that they have less threat of harm from anyone but themselves and a high impact, which leads to higher profile and more notoriety for whoever chooses to do these things. Let's limit their accessibility.

                                Reply#2299 - Fri Dec 21, 2012 9:56 AM EST

I noticed someone brought up experimental drugs in an earlier post. Does anyone realize that in your drinking water hides reminents of drugs that are put in your drinking water? The drinking water (especially around big cities) is tainted with many different drugs and pharmicuticals, such as ridilan, anti-depression medications, marijuana, cocaine, and even traces of heroine. Astounding, isn't it? One of the network news probes investigated this and found that there are trace amounts of these drugs and more that are not being filtered out of our drinking water. How do they get there you may ask? When you personally have pills or liquid medications left over from your visit to your doctor or if you have stuff that is out of date, what do you do with them? Most people don't want to just throw them away, it could find it's way into some innocent person or animals possession, so we mostly dump them into the toilet! Why is this a problem? Where do you think that water goes when flushed? Some would think out to the rivers or the ocean but you would be surprised (I was) to know it goes to the disposal plant like all liquid and solid waste for treatment. But then (heres the scary part)the water is treated and then added to your incoming water supply and then you have if for drinking or whatever you want to do with it. Think about it, if they didn't re-use some of it the resevoirs would be empty by now. The filtration at the water treatment plants are not designed to filter out such impurities, and the chemicals added to the water to make it palatable do nothing to the drugs to counter act the effects. So now we all have trace amounts of these materials that we are ingestng on a daily basis (I bet bottled water is looking better all the time). This could very well be part of the puzzle we are trying to solve. And like the report stated it is trace amounts that we ingest but who is to say that the materials ingested are not stockpiled by the body in fat or in the bloodstream? Not only that I choose not to do drugs and have never done drugs, so trace amounts to me is more than I want in my system let alone a possible build up of materials. I believe it was either DATELINE or 20/20 that did the investigation if you wish to check the story. We (as human beings) are destroying ourselves and when we don't, there are other human beings doing it for us! Why...money...votes...greed...?

The NRA has just saved us a great deal of time of having to listen to Joe Biden. Their idea will work. Joe's, what ever weak ideas he comes up with will not. You want to protect your children? Get on board with the NRA idea. Put an armed gard at your school.

I think that guns should just be banned period. What's going to stop the random violence in homes if these things are not completely banned?

From my correspondence with a representative:

                                            Congressman Sessions,

First, thank you for a timely and genuine reply. I take heart that such a travesty prompts us all to look at each other and engage one another for solutions. However, my own conscience aches at the thought of inaction now, and I'm compelled not to let it drop with you either, on this COMPLEX issue.

In your first reply, you mentioned the need for a mental health system. I salute you, because certainly the reality of the mental health system in the USA is all but nonexistent. There is none; funding for it had steadily declined since its hey-day 50 years ago when more than 400,000 psychiatric beds were available to those whom were deemed unstable. Certainly, this is a large portion of the neglect thats culminated in the Newtown Shootings, as well just about every other mass-shooting since 1999. Today in America, there are 20 psychiatric beds available for those who have mental health problems per 100,000 people. I assure you, the prevalence and frequency of mental health disorder among the populace is much higher than 20 in 100,000. These beds provide a place where loved ones can take their unstable family members, commit them temporarily, if only to wait out the episode of violent tendencies. Do you know how difficult it is to commit someone against their will, even for 24-hrs to these sort of safe houses? Do you think the situation now is adequate, and if not, I ask what are you willing to pay for to correct it, and part of me is asking the fiscal conservative in you.. Right now, spending cuts are hotly debated on The Hill, and its hard to find anyone who will stand up for spending, even if it is absolutely and necessarily in need. Will you remember this as Congress moves to solve the fiscal budget issues? The mentally unstable aren't going anywhere, our struggling families of those unstable are not going anywhere either. It is such an outright shame that the funding to do all that, is absolutely going some where: its disappearing.

The Newtown massacre of children is the reverberating crescendo now spread bare before this country of the perfect storm: of our lack of any semblance of a healthcare system that adequately addresses the needs of the mentally unstable, and the free accessibility of "weapons of mass destruction". Yes, Congressman, I have every intention to call the AR-15 a weapon of mass destruction, because thats exactly what it reaped on 20 first graders, 6 adults, their families, the Newtown community, and the American people. Assault weapons are entirely capable of being WMD's.

You and I both know that the 2nd Amendment and the NRA are not going anywhere in national politics, nor are they even threatened now. Today there are 310,000,000 firearms in the USA, thats more guns than cars. I absolutely believe in the right enshrined in that 2nd amendment, to bear arms in many cases being essential to livelihood and the integrity of a persons safety. Yet, what part of "a well regulated militia" is exhibited by a demented, mentally unstable Adam Lanza uninhibitedly obtaining an assault weapon and walking into an elementary school and using his weapon? There is a disturbing and sickening lack of ANY regulation regarding the 2nd amendment. We have so clearly failed: in Columbine, at West Virginia, former congresswoman Gabriel Giffords, movie-goers in Aurora, worshippers at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, and now a classroom full of children in Newtown; we have shamefully failed them at holding true the content of that 2nd amendment, of "regulating" any arms whatsoever.

Right now, Congressman, it's harder to get Robitussin at Walgreens than it is an AK-47 at a gunshow because of just how lax, nonchalant, and laissez faire Congress has allowed deadly, deadly weapons to become. A co-worker of mine just last October walked into a gunshow in your district and my home of Dallas, and walked out the same day with an AK-47. The sale was cash, there was no background check. This is just how easy it is to get specialty modified deadly weapons. Congressman, children's toys have more regulation than do these weapons that can become so so so deadly; what tragic irony. You yourself have even voted for some sort of hindrance to this almost black market-esque sale of firearms; in 1999 voting "yea" on HR2122 Mandatory Gunshow Background Checks.

Congressman Sessions, on that very same day of Dec. 14 that the massacre happened, another horrible tragedy was unfolding in China. On that same day, a demented man walked into a primary school with a knife and slashed 17 children there. Not one of them died. All went home to their distraught families that night. Can the same be said in Newtown? What a unfortunate coincidence and case-in-point of the travesty we fostered in neglecting our mentally disabled to get healthcare, and at the same time allowing those unstable persons the right to deadly, deadly weapons! The thing is, every nation on the Lord's earth battles with the dilemma of the mentally unstable and how to effectively treat them and provide for them. Every nation on this earth experiences the tragically confused, even despicable actions they can sometimes commit. It's just that the USA is the only nation that allows, and even protects, their right to have assault weapons. Congressman, in ensuring and protecting the right of Americans to access these incredibly powerful weapons that go beyond the power of any handgun, shotgun, or single-round rifle, you have also ensured the right of Adam Lanza to freely access this gun as if it were a cup of water. I don't even agree that I, or most Americans for that matter, should have access to these specialty weapons, much less the mentally unstable.

Congressman, I have life-long been a hunter. I have killed and eaten using that gun. My father taught me gun safety, and just how important it is to treat a plain shotgun with the deadly respect it deserves. My grandmother sleeps with a pistol beneath her pillow at her ranch outside Argyle, Tx to scare coyotes off her cattle and for protection in rural Texas should the unlikely scenario of a break-in happen. Such is the legitimate and even venerable gun culture in America. Neither of them, nor I, think assault weapons pertain to, or even were inconsideration when the 2nd amendment was written. I am so so very sorry and ashamed that this country and Congressional leaders treat much, much deadlier weapons such that they are effectively freely accessible to anyone for any intention.

Again Congressman, I implore you as a father, you as a public servant, perhaps even most you as a Christian, to take up small measures on specialty weapons to in the least, diminish the likelihood of mass shootings: Assault style weapons are, in practical use, either toys for men or tools of mass shootings for the unstable in this country. Which is the greater evil, and worthy of infringing upon the other? Enlarged ammunition clips make pistols into semi-automatic weapons. (when the mass shooting in AZ happened, the only reason someone was able to tackle and subdue Jared Loughner was because he stopped to reload. He still used enlarged magazines). Perhaps the most egregious neglect of national safety comes from the 33 states that employ and protect gunshow loopholes to evade background checks- something you yourself have in the past took aim at.

These measures are not in any way infringing upon anyones right to "bear arms". These measures cut with a surgical scalpel away at the gross neglect to regulate militias and the blind eye we have turned toward true and real weapons of mass destruction among us.

The Connecticut shooting tradegy truly is a tradgedy and I think most people agree that more needs to be done and will be done. We live in a world today where more people are disillusioned and struggling just to be able to support and feed their families. I'm also increasingly worried about the need to protect my family as best as I can from harm. Do I need an assault weapon for that purpose? I don't think so. I do believe in the 2nd ammendment because the day may come soon when we all are faced with the need to protect our families.

I work for a school district in a low income, high crime rate area. Actual shooting incidents and school lockdowns are commonplace events. Just yesterday one of our schools was placed on lockdown because a bus driver spotted a kid with a weapon on school grounds. Turns out the weapon was a black squirt gun. So what's wrong with that picture? When kids today don't understand how irresponsible an act like that is no matter how seemingly innocent. Or a complete lack of respect for what just happened back in Connecticut. It all starts at home with values or lack of it in today's society. One post here suggested the need for armed guards at our schools. I couldn't agree more. That and better security and surveillance. It's unfortunate and sad, but these are necessary measures to help protect our kids to the maximum extent possible, and ensure their safe retun home to their families.

Yesterday I was at Big 5 Sporting Goods and purchased a 12 gauge shotgun. Some guy came in and asked why they had pulled their display of assualt weapons. The store clerk told him it was a corporate decision not to sell the weapons at this time because of the shooting tradgedy back in Connecticut. The guy said " but another one of your stores said they would still sell the weapons even though they're not currently being displayed." The clerk just said sorry, that employee you spoke to was in error. I asked the guy why not wait & he said he was fearful of that an assualt weapons ban is coming very soon in California and if he could, he would buy the entire store's stock of assault weapons. Wow... I thought how unreal and at the same time...good job Big 5 for showing some respect. Why not just stop selling the damn things NOW!

Excuse me now, I'm not the one taking something so devastating, heartbreaking and making it a political issue. Ole obama done did it.

Is there any doubt now that he's a socialist. Now government can control crazy people from killing innocent people. There aren't any crazy guns in the world. I can't believe he can take the killing of such young innocent children to push his political agenda. I personaly don't see the need for automatic big magazine guns either but I have enough sense to know taking them away doesn't change anything. Take away their God, ruin their economy, take their weapons of self defense, thats how Marxism and Nazi did it.

If you are really worried about the killing of innocent children look at ABORTION. That's the issue here, the unprotected children. Not guns. The mentaly ill people that can do such a thing. Not guns.

WTF planet are you from ? First, any tragedy demands a comment from whoever is the president, thats all presidents, so STFU about the politics. Second, socialism, by definition, is what any good human should strive for. Socialism is what Christianity is, so dont pretend to be a repuglican and be pro Bible but anti socialist, you cant be both. If you have Christian values, then you obviously are in favor of socialist policies. If your anti socialism, dont try to pretend you have biblical values, you dont. Third, GUNS KILL PEOPLE. THAT IS THE ONLY THING THEY ARE MADE FOR. No citizen should ever want to or be allowed to own a gun. Unless you are pro murder. Guns serve ZERO purpose other than killing, so of course people should never ever be allowed to have them, unless you are actively inside a war.Even police have been proven many times beyond any doubt that they are irresponsible and should never be allowed to carry a gun. Its that simple.

I think we are mistaking Socialism (government control of the state) and socialism (socialistic behavior, that of one human showing care for and empathising with, and helping another) and using them in the wrong context. There are two different types of socialism and where this country is going is definitely the wrong socialism! It is Government controlled and forced scenario, like "political correctness" which is a word made up to force someone to care about another's needs, wants and concerns. Instead of where if you needed help and someone could and would help you out, by picking you up, brushing off the road dirt and getting you on your way again. THAT SCENARIO IS GOOD BECAUSE IT GETS SOMEONE BACK ON THEIR FEET AGAIN SO THEY CAN GET MOVING AGAIN AS OPPOSED TO THE OTHER TYPE WHERE SOMEONE HAS TO DO MORE BECAUSE SOMEONE WANTS TO DO LESS, which is the epitamy of Governmental (forced) Socialism. Where the Government forced scenario is where the Government takes from those who it thinks have too much and gives it to those it deems having too little. A very skewed view of the world as a whole and inwhich no one holds the Government accountable except the Government itself. Wake up America!
