Key State Department official resigns in wake of Benghazi report

The assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security has resigned and three other officials have been relieved of duty after a report criticized the State Department over the attacks on U.S. diplomats in Benghazi, Libya, the department said late Wednesday.

State Department spokesperson Victoria J. Nuland confirmed that Eric Boswell had resigned and said three other officials had been relieved of duties pending . Two of the others worked in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and one in the Bureau of Near East Affairs.

Nuland did not name the other three, but a U.S. official told NBC News that one was Charlene Lamb, Boswell’s deputy assistant secretary of state for international programs. Earlier reports had said that Boswell, Lamb and another unidentified official had resigned.

The resignations come after the release of the Accountability Review Board Report on the attacks on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, Libya, which faulted the State Department and specifically the Bureau of Diplomatic Security for "grossly inadequate" security.

Here’s Nuland’s full statement:

"The ARB identified the performance of four officials, three in the Bureau of the Diplomatic Security and one in the Bureau of Near East Asia Affairs.  The Secretary has accepted Eric Boswell's decision to resign as Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security, effective immediately.   The other three individuals have been relieved of their current duties.  All four individuals have been placed on administrative leave pending further action."

Sorry Arthur66, but the buck doesn't stop at Mrs. Concussion. The buck stops at the top of the food chain. You don't actually believe the president will allow any harm to come to him though, do you? You will see more lies and tales from the crypt spilling out of the oval office than a 72 hour marathon featuring the CryptKeeper.

There comes a point in time when even his most insane backers cannot make enough excuses for him.

Hillary is supposedly working from home per State Dept. Why can't she testify via video conferencing? This will be her Swiftboat if she runs in 2016. She should have testified right after the incident. The information in this report doesn't appear to be anything that someone of her ranking would not have been privy to, prior to the election. She gets off because she already proclaimed resignation prior to the event. But I agree, the buck stops with Obama. He can't get a pass. Gotta love Truman for his straightforwardness. Democrat or Republican - they were protecting the election results. Just like the crap here in NJ with Menendez and his illegal intern not getting arrested until after the elections. Where is the outrage on any of this? NJ people just go to the polls and vote straight party every single election. You just gotta wonder with all the highly intelligent educated people in this state why they do it over and over.

So now that the election is over they will bank on no one paying attention. Is there a true journalist with b@$&s out there who is allowed to focus on the facts when they happen? Or do they fear the American people may actually have a brain and think for themselves outside of their spin!

I disagree totally. Obama wanted Colin Powell as his SoS. The Clinton Mafia insisted that he appoint Hillarity instead.

The Benghazi debacle is something Hillary should WEAR as she leaves office in DISGRACE. She was always big on the photo op, but very 'light' when it came to the heavy lifting and tough assignments.

now you all realise this report the public heard about and yes it is bad, however there is a classified longer and in more detail report that is and will be read by the congressional hearings group and it is really bad. this why clinton has disappeared from public. so no reporters can ask her questions.

the old out of sight out of mind, her handlers are trying to distance her from scandal so she can run for president..I dont want to hear about sickness or concussions, really when have you ever NOT heard or seen either clinton, they are both media whores !

This is just the unclassified report, bet we will never see the classified report being declassified and released any time soon. If these people are such buffoons who in the hell hired them for these positions?

A lack of leadership is America's problem. This is Obama's fault. Harry S. Truman, who really was an American and a Democrat stated: "the buck stops here". Obama who Is at best a Democrat always blames another, never leads and never accepts responsibility. The blood of our Ambassador is on Obama's hands as it was simply more important to pretend during the election season that his giving of Libya to Al-Queada was a good thing and not the reason they murdered our Ambassador. Shame on anyone who voted for Obama.

You R's can overstate the implications this has on the president or Hillary because you have nothing and remain the party of nothing. If Hillary wanted to run in 2016 then she would be the next President.

"You can't prevent madmen from killing innocents by restricting guns because crazy people always find a waybut..four people get killed in a foreign embassy and it's someone's fault because it wasn't prevented."

Did the faculty at Sandy Hook make repeated requests to law enforcement for protection due to escalating violent attacks in the days prior to the attack on them?????? And what would you say should happen to the officers who failed to listen if they had made requests???? Somehow I doubt your bleeding heart would excuse them for doing nothing.... especially if they also then lied to your face about it.

It is party-obedient sheep like you who ignore reality to protect "their party" who are responsible for the continued lowering of America's political bar.

No, it is because Republicans were sick of the way he was handling the country and alot Republicans are also the reason that Obama was elected in 2008. What a cute response. You're right I am the sheep in this equation. <---LOL

I am the one being led around by this nonsense conspiracy theory that Fox has continued to repeat ad nauseum? Were you this upset about any similar event that happened under bush?

My point was that people from your side of the fence can't pick and choose when accountability kicks in. Why did that school have to ask for security? Any one paying attention would be able to see a pattern with crazy people walking into public places and killing unarmed innocent people.

You either missed the point I was making or ,as usual for your kind, conveniently don't see the consistency issue because you can't attack the President. So I am guessing each time someone at an embassy died, or when we got a report that later conflicted with information, we had mobs marching of Republicans claiming Bush needed to be impeached.

Oh wait, I'll stop living in the past. It didn't become important until January 20, 2009. My bad.

On a far more serious note, this is a terrible tragedy. After reading the breakdown of the incident it is interesting to note how the people inside went from "are the fires dying down" to "oh, the building is on fire, got it".

Outside of the report, and no matter how it was reported to us, it doesn't change the fact that people died and I have yet to see anyone on either side of the aisle, or in between the two aisles, cheering that on. For people throwing the argument that one side believes that governmental and service members are dying and that they see it as okay, you are going very far to put words into someone's mouth.

It looks like the sacrificial lambs have been sent to the slaughter. But I would not worry too much about these three people, they will land in a sweet job at some DC lobbying firm or government contractor. That is the way things work in Washington when there is a major screw up like Benghazi. A few of the underlings take the hit for the big boss who is really the one responsible for the decisions that lead to the screw up. Then the sacrificial lambs get a lot of under the table help to keep their careers intact in return for their "sacrifice" and business continues as usual.

How can one demand stricter gun control while gifting a new dictator 20 F-16s? How can one say increasing taxes must be done while spending millions of tax dollars on vacations? How can Americans be trustful of government when the government constantly proves its lack of honesty? You can banter back and forth over who is the least or most corrupt but it doesn't take away their corruption and it doesn't make the government honest. All you can do is what is right, not pretending what's wrong with another matters, while the wrongs you support are of no matter at all.

After reading the "full" report, why is there no mention as to who gave the order to "stand down" to the contractors who sought permission to aid their countrymen?

And where is the mention of the "video" which was the OFFICIAL stance of the Administration up to and including the six times during the President's speech to the U.N. on the 25th of October (2 weeks later) in which he blamed the violence on an obscure You Tube video.

We are simply looking for answers for very simple questions. Not a bunch of "lackeys" getting repositioned in the Administration.

Can't anyone own up to a mistake?

This one was "misinformed"

This one is "out of the country"

This one has a "concussion"

Not I, Not I, Not I.

These are dark days.

History will tell.

Look Eric 913730, you are not quoting George W. Bush or anything he has stated. You are quoting the title of an article! Nothing in there is a quote from George W. Bush. It's an article that talks about the Bush administration working with the failed negotiations of a previous administration. Get you facts straight and shut up!

How many more are going to "jump ship" ? I wonder what they will get for their early "retirement" exit.

These folks need to man-up or woman-up instead of taking the EXIT door.

Wait a minute....the report blasted the Department of State and the HEAD of the Department of State is no other than.....Secretary Clinton. The BUCK does not stop with her but goes all the way to the Oval Office.

Yep, that 2:00 am red phone call coming into the White House will be automatically transferred to the U.N. Ambassador. //sarcasm//

Heck, and folks are putting Mrs. Clinton on a pedestal for a run in 2016. Good luck with that one.

I see the morons are out and crawling today. Anyone know how Eric Boswell got his job or who gave it to him or if he was even qualified to do it? I bet most of you have never been in charge or taken over a position that was already in place before you. Do you fire everyone or learn what they know how to do as you learn your new job? These jobs are one of a kind but for his job head of security I doubt 1 year in the military provided enough experience to even learn how to shine his boots. This is what electing morons like your selves have done for this country. Keep up the good work.

The budget was cut, but MORE dem voted to pass the bill then rep did, then the president SIGNED it as his approval... Does that count for anything?

Also as a side not, under oath in front of crongress C. Lamb stated that FUNDING WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. How can you change that and blame it on the Rep?

Elaine , do you know the word "priorities". Government waste millions of dollars . Just to give you an example.

WASHINGTON -- There are zombie banks, the zombie apocalypse, and now, according to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), zombie homeland security programs that spend money without adequate oversight or cost control.

According to a new report by the Oklahoman, often a critic of Department of Homeland Security programs, the waste extends to a staged zombie apocalypse.

In that case, the report said, DHS authorized up to $1,000 a head for law enforcers to attend a five-day security conference at a "paradise" island getaway with security industry companies. The conference featured a simulated attack -- involving the undead -- as the centerpiece.

There is no excuses, sorry.

Eric J. Boswell is a 40 year Department of State civil servant who has served every president since entering the foreign service in 1972. He has served in the administrations of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama.

Charlene R. Lamb is a 25-year Department of State civil servant who has served every president since entering the diplomatic service in 1987. She has served in the administrations of Presidents Reagan, George H.W Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama.

The complete public service bios of Mr. Boswell and Ms. Lamb are available on the website of the United States Department of State, and both served impressive and distinguished careers entirely unrelated to partisan politics.

Insinuate that these two career civil servants were political lackeys if you wish, but the reality is we are losing 65 years of combined distinguished civil service experience in one of the most difficult, challenging and all too often dangerous areas of responsibility in our US Government.

Yes, we can say we had a failure on September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya. We didn't get it right. That's a fact. Hard to dispute. We screwed up.

It is worth remembering that the day of this attack, which came without warning, it was also September 11 everyplace in the entire world.

It was September 11 at every one of the 294 physical embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions of the United States in every individual location across the world; 27 of those missions located in the Middle East and North Africa region, which is more than any other nation on Earth. Several of those other missions had been actively threatened by demonstrations over the prior 7-day period.

Individuals made decisions about where to place limited resources that day in response to active demonstrations, but we didn't get it right in Benghazi, .... and four of our own died there.

It is also worth remembering that on September 11, 2001 we didn't get it right here in America. That time we had eight months of warning, and renewed warnings just weeks before the attacks. Individuals chose not to heed the warnings .... and 2,996 of our own died here.

Perhaps it would be more worthy of us, as Americans, to remember that sometimes we will be less than perfect. It has happened before, and it is going to happen again. We will screw up. We will not get it right. We will not be perfect. And some of our own will die.

One thing however which might help us to reduce the number of future failures, and deaths of our own, is to put as much of our collective energies into finding actual solutions and improving our processes when we have failures ( based upon the difficult

lessons learned ) instead of wasting so much of our energies and limited resources on protracted partisan shouting, finger pointing and political demagoguery.

The current tone of partisan vitriol which has been continuous now for more than 3-months, is diverting attentions every single day which need to be focused on the job at hand; the world doesn't just stop being a dangerous place while we are all screaming and pointing fingers at each other.

How much of our limited human and financial resources, and for how long, do we continue to divert and redirect to task of explaining, and defending what has already happened, .... rather than keeping those resources focused on preventing what might happen tomorrow?

Perhaps we all need to dial-down the rhetoric, and grow up?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/19/state-benghazi-report_n_2330034.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

A consistently limited budget imposed by Congress, the report added, "had the effect of conditioning a few State Department managers to favor restricting the use of resources as a general orientation," which helps explain why the local security officials' calls for more staff was not immediately heeded.

When is Boehner going to resign for his failure to get necessary funding through the House? The Republicons outrage is completely phony. They care nothing about the deaths in Benghazi, other than for their usefulness as a weapon to attack Obama. That's why they spent so much time on bashing Susan Rice, who had nothing to do with Benghazi security and hardly any time asking questions about the security problems or proposing solutions to them.

Robert in Oregon: Please, do not forget to mention that due to the lack of accurate intelligence we engaged in a mistake that cost the lives of 4132 American servicemen. Was anyone ever found responsible for the intelligence gathering that led to the Iraqi invasion? Was ever anyone in the cabinet ever held accountable? I have a friend buried in Arlington and 3 wounded because of the 'mistakes', yet I have not found anyone responsible enough to say, "We screwed it up, sorry." And it isn't less important the deaths that occurred in Libya, what is despicable is that those who today scream for the administration's heads, are the same who then looked the other way when they found out that they were duped by the administration. So, what is their excuse?

Hahaha, move along folks, there's nothing to see here. Just like Fast and Furious, Solyndra, etc., this is just the rightwing desperately trying to find a scandal where there is none. As the president said in the debates, "proceed Governor" and ultimately this will make a face plant the same way Romney did.

And there is NO comparison to the real travesty that was the lies taking us into the unnecessary invasion of Iraq -- Remember the "mushroom cloud" intimation of nukes? Not just WMD, but friggin' nukes? Look at the ruination of Colin Powell because of his statement to the UN. Look at Condi Rice who even now tries to CYA her incompetence. Look at the information since like the Downing Street Memo just to name a few -- Freedom of Information my arse.

The only story is how the Dems closed down ACORN (yes, in a recent poll, a large percent of Republican voters said the 2012 election was stolen by ACORN -- though ACORN no longer exists! Yet look at GOP operations that WERE guilty of fraud in 2012!), Shirley Sherrod, etc. had to resign though guilty of nothing, and how Elizabeth Warren, and most recently Susan Rice have had to step away from nomination because the political cost was made outrageous by Republican sh!theads...

And whether it is resignation of Eliot Spitzer, or more recently Anthony Weiner, where oh where are the resignations of Republicans from David Vitter to Todd Akin, and all the nominations during Bush/Cheney that absolutely deserved to be filibustered like Alito to the SCOTUS but the Dems are douchebags like the Teapublicans...

You rightwing hypocrites have become so sickening in your self-righteousness, blind hatred, and most of all ignorance, how can you stand be be around yourselves? Ah shaddap already!

Correction, the above post saved before I could finish editing...

"the Dems are NOT douchebags like the Teapublicans" -- they have not abused the filibuster or blocked nominations at any level as we've seen from the GOP since 2008. And the Banghazi tragedy is nothing compared to the politics during Bush/Cheney, including the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame, or Alberto Gonzales of the DOJ, etc. You rightwingers either have short memories, selective memories, or more likely are just brainwashed lemmings.

This is the story that Fox News carried for weeks that the liberal news media, including NBC, would not report for fear of the negative consequences that it could have on Barack Obama in the presidential election. We now have Hillary Clinton somewhere in a comma/concussion and says she is unable to appear before Congress on the Benghazi issue. The committee has now placed blame on the State Dept. of which Hillary Clinton heads-up, (Secretary of State).

The Democrats and the liberal media has been successful in hiding the killing of 4 Americans, due to the neglect of this administration to provide proper security, until after the election.

Shameful, disgraceful and a wake-up call for all those who are so critical of Fox News.

Leaks? Kagan - Petraeus Gave Unpaid Analysts Unusual Access

http://www.newser.com/story/159581/petraeus-gave-gop-advisers-questionable-access.html

Civilians Fred and Kim Kagan worked for free in Afghanistan

By Kevin Spak, Newser Staff

Posted Dec 19, 2012 7:00 AM CST

(Newser) – Military lawyers are looking into a strange arrangement David Petraeus had with a husband-and-wife team of conservative think-tank analysts, who served as unofficial, unpaid de-facto senior advisers to him in Afghanistan, the Washington Post reports. Fred and Kim Kagan had top-level security clearance, desks in Petraeus' headquarters, and enjoyed priority travel across the war zone. Senior White House and Pentagon officials were unaware of the arrangement, but many others were. At one Kagan function back in Washington, Petraeus quipped, "There's some suspicion that there's a hand up my back, and it makes my lips talk, and it's operated by one of the Doctors Kagan."

The Kagans believed the US should shift to an offensive footing against the Haqqani network—and told commanders as much. "It created huge confusion," one senior military officer says. “Everyone assumed they were speaking for the boss.” Some generals praise the Kagans (one says they "did the work of 20 intelligence analysts") but others worried about their Washington connections, with some suspecting they funneled classified info to Republicans. "The situation was very, very weird," says one colonel. "It’s not how you run a headquarters." Even Fred Kagan admits the situation was "strange and uncomfortable" at times. "We were going around speaking our minds, trying to force people to think about things in different ways." Click to read the lengthy piece.

Civilian analysts gained Petraeus’s ear while he was commander in Afghanistan

Actually this report sort of sickens me. When ths insident happened Romney accused the president of lack of leadership. The media and dDemocratic public screamed bloody murder that he was overstepping. Because of that Romney dropped Bengazi on the campain trail. Now that Obama can't run again of course the truth is finally coming out about this President. He is not a leader. All he is is an entertainer.A speaker. Beyond smooth words he is the biggest failure in our history. Had this subject be forced to the fore front perhaps people would not have voted for him and more truths could come out but Obama was able to smooth talk his way out of it at the time. He actully took full responsibility. and as such should resign himself in disgrace just as Richard Nixon did. The only real problem with that is we would get smilelin Joe Biden as a replacement.

You Obama supporters can spew all the hate at me you want but look at the truth and see what this President really is before you do.

Funny how many US Embassies have been under attack over the last 50 years and the right wing gets all bent out of shape over this one. From 2001 through 2008 there were 8 attacks on US Embassies with many people killed but you nut cases on the right get all bent out of shape over this one.

Karachi, Pakistan, June 14, 2002, February 28, 2003, March 15, 2004, and March 2, 2006:The string of bombings and attempted bombings outside the U.S. consult in Karachi were thought to be in retaliation for the War on Terror in Afghanistan, and later Iraq. The first bomb in June 2002 was a suicide bomber, who killed 12 and injured 51 people. In February 2003, a gunman killed two police officer and injured five others outside the consulate. In March 2004, an attempted bombing was stopped when police discovered 200 gallons of liquid explosives in the back of a truck. In March 2006, another suicide bomber killed six people outside a nearby Marriott Hotel.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, July 30, 2004: The U.S. and Israeli embassies were targeted by suicide bombers. Two security guards were killed.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, December 6, 2004: Militants breached the outer wall of the U.S. consulate and began shooting, but did not enter the consulate. Five civilians and the gunmen were killed. Ten people were wounded.

Damascus, Syria, September 12, 2006: Three gunmen were killed after they tossed grenades over the embassy's outer wall and a car bomb exploded outside the embassy. A Syrian security guard and a Chinese diplomat also died.

Athens, Greece, January 12, 2007: A rocket-propelled grenade was fired into the front of the U.S. embassy around 6 am in the morning. No one was killed or hurt. A Greek terrorist group called "Revolutionary Struggle" claimed responsibility.

Istanbul, Turkey, July 9, 2008: Kurdish Turks open fired around 11 am, killing six people and injuring one. The three men had suspected Al-Qaeda links, but this was never proven.

San'a, Yemen, September 7, 2008: 19 people died and at least 16 were injured when a group of men disguised at police attacked the outer security rim of the U.S. embassy. Al-Qaeda affiliate Islamic Jihad of Yemen claimed responsibility.

Where's the outcry over these people being killed while Bush was in office? Is the outcry over Bengnazi phony and political? Or is Benghazi different now because a Democrat president is in office? That would be my guess.

The assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security has resigned and three other officials have been relieved of duty after a report criticized the State Department over the attacks on U.S. diplomats in Benghazi, Libya, the department said late Wednesday.

They'll be fine. They will be given jobs elsewhere in the government for this sacrifice and no one will be the wiser. Probably even get a raise. My prediction is that Hillary will come down with an episode of transient global amnesia due to the bump on the head and ensuing concussion. Kinda like the Rose Law firm billing records. At least with this she'll have a medical condition to support her memory loss. This is almost farcical in its similarity to a day time soap opera.

      What I found curious about the 'Independent' Report on the Benghazi fiasco is that it concluded that 'mistakes were made', but then later concluded that nobody acted inappropriately - in other words;

"Mistakes were made that led to the 4 American deaths, but nobody made them".

We were talking about Afghanistan and Iraq was ended on Bush's timetable....Obama just took credit for what was already set in motion. I guess we are going to ignore the International community begging for Saddam to be stopped from mass killings of his own people (remember the Kurd villages that were being wiped out by those now non-existent WMDs?) or the fact that the entire USA, including you I would bet, was all for the war on terror after 911. But those little tidbits don't fit into today's agenda now that you have a messiah.

I think what the current POTUS meant was 'The buck starts here'; but only in regards to spending.

The vote to reduce that funding was BI-PARTISAN with 149 Dems and 147 Repubs voting yes?

In case “math is hard” I’ll point it out for you that with the repub majority that means that Dems voted yes both by a numerical majority and by a larger percentage than Repubs.

For once we can only hope that John McCain is at his vitriolic worst when he finally gets to question Hillarity Clinton about what she let happen on her watch! This should guarantee that by leaving office in complete disgrace no amount of 'spin' will put her back in the limelight. The USA may well have credible female candidates in 2016 for POTUS, but they will NOT include HRC and thank the Lord for THAT.

People are delusional if they think the Republicans passed a cut in funding without the support of the Senate, and signature of the President. Who did what to whom again? This is a clear leadership problem including the attempted misdirection by the White House toward a little know video and the producers arrest as a smoke screen to the real issues. Now three insiders are fired...I mean resign under duress...I mean resign and you all tend to ignore the connections. This is evident in your parties ability to run a country without a budget...that is working so well for all of us.

Why should we increase funding for the State Department when they are spending thousands and thousands every year to restore historic structures around the world. Sure it's a nice gesture, but it's kind of like your kids asking you to pay their car insurance because they need to pay their tanning salon subscription and tattoo artist.

...lists $72,600 that went to an Episcopal basilica in Macedonia to help with the conservation of early Christian frescoes. AFA says that a mosque in Pakistan got $67,000 — actually it was $67,500 — but doesn’t mention an $81,990 grant for "Restoration of the Late 17th‐Century Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign" in the Russian Federation, or $94,827 to restore a high altar and cloister of an 18th century convent in Guatemala City. Among the State Department’s "large grants" is $625,000 for the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Turkey.

        http://www.factcheck.org/2011/03/funding-mosques-overseas/

So hurray for the anyone who voted not to give them more money. The problem is they should have taken this budgeted money and things like this to pay for essential security!

        "Hypocritical Republicans !"

And yet none of them made repeated requests to Bush for security, and Bush never spat in American's faces by attempting to pretend a You Tube video was responsible.

To be "hypocritical" you would have to actually be comparing the same actions.

        P.S.

Speaking of hypocrisy... where is your latest complaint about Obama raising the debt ceiling? or how about Obama keeping Gitmo open?

You don't have to have the same actions to be a hypocrite.

Republicans have made it quite impossible for Obama to close Gitmo, I look forward to a Republican President getting to do the same thing.

        Bull $*!%, WHEN?

BTW, statements like your side and our side show the breakdown of this country.

“What my attitude on this is is if we find out there was a big breakdown and somebody didn’t do their job, they’ll be held accountable,” said Obama in an interview with MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, according to a report on that network’s website.

“Ultimately as Commander-in-Chief I am responsible and I don’t shy away from that responsibility," Obama added.

Don't you just hate it when facts pop out and kick you in the f*cking teeth? Next time ditch the rhetoric and you might not look the fool.

Eric: I think you are mistaken in your count. You forgot the 4132 American servicemen that perished fighting for a lie that no one in the previous administration admitted to have sent mistakenly to their demise. We found no WMD, we found out that we had deficient intelligence, and yet not a single member of the previous administration even resigned. Not even out of respect for the servicemen that their incompetence sent to their deaths. And all the self-proclaimed righteous demanding the resignation of the administration make me puke. Hypocrites that were in favor of a war and were not even capable of criticizing the administration when they realized that they took them for a ride.

Speaking of hypocrisy... where is your latest complaint about Obama raising the debt ceiling? or how about Obama keeping Gitmo open?

Hypocrisy is pretending Obama is the only president to raise the debt ceiling or that he raised it more. Congress raised the debt ceiling 18 times under Reagan and 8 times under Bush. Its only been 3 times under Obama and never been an issue until Obama became president. I know you expect more from a democrat than republicans but not even democrats can work miracles. It wasn't until Obama was elected republicans pretended raising the debt ceiling was something new. And what about gitmo? Hard to blame Obama for not closing it down without blaming Bush for putting them there to start with. Obama as a candidate had no way to know the complications closing it might have. As a responsible president when shown facts it wasn't practical to straight shut it down he relented.

The letter dated the day of the attack asking for additional security was written to the Libyan government not ours. Under Libyan law marines can only defend the Embassy not consulates. The defense for the consulate was provided by Libya and contractors. Stevens made the choice to travel to the consulate on his own knowing he'd be limited to contractors and Libyan security on the 9-11 anniversary.

He set right there in the last Debate and agreed with everything Obama has done overseas. Wasn't anything he would do different. And Maybe the reason they didn't press the matter more is because it was Rep's that cut the funding for security for such things. How do you think that was going to make Paul Ryan look? If there were a do over, Obama would win even bigger. Might be better to let sleeping dogs sleep.

This could have come out at any time and it wouldn't have changed the election whatsoever. Anyone stupid enough to have voted for him the first time, and then the second time is not smart enough to really understand the ramifications of the Benghazi situation, and probably doesn't care to.

Funny how all this couldn't have come out BEFORE the election.

Kind of like the unpaid illegal alien registered sex offender intern in Senator Bob Menendez' office. He was reported but nothing was done until after the election:

Authorities in Hudson County notified ICE agents in early October that they suspected Sanchez was an illegal immigrant who was a registered sex offender and who may be eligible to be deported. ICE agents in New Jersey notified superiors at the Homeland Security Department because they considered it a potentially high profile arrest, and DHS instructed them not to arrest Sanchez until after the November election, one U.S. official told the AP. ICE officials complained that the delay was inappropriate, but DHS directed them several times not to act, the official said

It did come out before the elections, Obama won anyway, and it wouldn't have made a difference. Why you ask?

Because in terms of comparison Obama has done much better than Bush at protecting embassies.

Under Bush, 53 deaths, 90 injuries in embassy attacks.

How in world do we expect the American citizens that support Obama to stop blaming the GOP when Obama himself won't stop? How do we expect them to take personal accountability for any of their actions when Obama himself will not?

Eric/Chuck - the blame game was put on hold until after the election. Real details hitting the media were delayed until after the election. Romney stepped in on the minor detail about the President using the word 'terror' in that news conference, which in no way meant that his administration publicly embraced the terrorist connection, nor did we ever find out why they refused to call it what is was for weeks thereafter. Even with Romney's gaffs, he would have been much closer, if not winning, if the full conversation were allowed to happen prior to the election. Regardless of which group makes tough choices on budgets, security is the job of the administration. If funding is needed, they should take any 'green' program or voter block program (free this, free that) and fund the security. Period.

Funny how all this couldn't have come out BEFORE the election. This should be enough for a do-over on the election. Just my opinion, but I hate that we have this level of information burying, then timely disclosure. very sad.

This happened almost 2 months before the election and all the points made today were made before. Most sane Americans know that whether it was called a riot or a terrorist attack the 4 people were already dead. All the information talked about today were brought up before the election. This was Romneys big play to make us think Obama was somehow responsible and only RWNJ's pretend to believe it.

Jim: You don't see the relevance of people pointing out the different standard you on the right hold Obama versus Bush? That's the problem when you neither see nor cared when Bush failed to defend Embassies, the twin towers or the Pentagon yet think 4 people killed under Obama is such a great travesty you show your judgement is based on nothing but hate. At least instead of deflecting questions try answering honestly why Obama should be held to such high accountability for Benghazi but Bush escapes blame for Embassy deaths and 9-11 on his. Unless you can no one except your fellow haters will agree. 399 Marines died in Lebanon from a terrorist attack under Reagan did you call for his impeachment?

An "oppressed" person in a place of power handing out the perks he thinks he always should have had under the guise of "a fair shot" when indeed it is all the things people, in their own minds, think they "deserve" just because they exist.

Talk - you really are a sick little person if that is truly what you believe. Your hatred isn't even disguised anymore.

I've come to realize that those of you who hate our President do it for one reason and one reason only. Jealousy.

This is a man who doesn't look like any other President we've had and you assumed he would never be elected. After all, he came from a single parent and was raised by his grandparents - not the easiest life. There is NO way someone like this can be elected.

Then he goes to Columbia and Harvard - how DARE he? YOU didn't get to go to those schools. It doesn't matter that he is ten times smarter than you or most people you know - it isn't right for SOMEONE LIKE HIM! Then he heads Harvard Law Review - what were people thinking? Don't they know it's not his "place" to hold that position?

After that he teaches at University of Chicago - the audacity of someone like him; becomes Senator then has the gall to run for President. But, there's no way SOMEONE LIKE HIM - a less than rich man who has a funny name and looks the way he does - could possibly win.

What the Hell were people thinking to elected HIM????? Then re-elect HIM?????

Yes, your jealouse is palpable; your illogical and baseless hatred shows with every post. And, with every post people like you show how small, ignorant, jealous, mindless and petty you are. It's not about the country - it's all about your inability to grow and accept anyone you think is inferior - even though your assessment of that person is based on nothing but your smallness.

I pity people like you because you have to live with yourself EVERY day!

People LIKE YOU are the ones damaging our country. Until you begin to realize that ALL people are actually EQUAL - you know, like it says in the Constitution, people like you will continue to hate! How sad - how totally pathetic!

I for one believe most of the things we have been told about his life but I cant trust him cause he wont let us see the truth. Why hide all those documents. I can only think of one reason to hide them. Something in those documents would have made it hard for him to get elected. One last question. Was he raised by a single parent or by his grandparents. There are two diff rent stories that he has told us. Like I said how can you trust him.

NOW... Obummer refuses to release documents, critical to a government investigation (on national security) and they defend his hiding the docs... saying there is nothing there to hide.

(btw... we heard them say the same thing when he hid the requested docs associated with the Fast & Furious investigation.)

Seeking is a seriously demented person as is everyone who cries racism when we hold Black Americans to the same standard we do whites. He then goes on to make a big deal about Obama going to Columbia and Harvard and yet Obama refuses to release his transcripts. No its not because he was a below average student, as we already know that from his prior failed attempt at college. He won't release them because they would show that after his illegal trip on a foreign passport to attend "camp" in Pakistan he applied and was admitted to both schools as a foreign exchange student.

Ya know I don't post much, but I read a lot and what I get out of reading 'sick' and 'talk' and your blame Obama for everything ilk is that you are so biased that you are competely unwilling to see reality for what it is. Life is much more about gray than black and white and while ultimately President Obama is, as he HAS stated, ultimately responsible, (you probably never heard him say that because your 'go to' media is Faux), his actual control over the events sweeping the world are pretty minimal and as has been pointed out here countless times we, the US are engaged in MANY areas that are of questionable security and those people who are there are at risk. The fact is in Libya it was known that we were trying to keep as low a presence as possible to aboid the look of an overly armed presence which would absoluteley have undermined what Stevens was trying to achieve in Libya. So take all this other BS and recognize $%^& happens when we have people in dangerous places.

George - sick, talk, skibum, notsofunny still can't get over the fact that the Republican party is in freefall and put up someone as laughable as Romney for their candidate. They NEVER acknowledge the good President Obama has done and continues to do and live to find anything to put him down. They are seriously demented individuals who will never be happy - they live to be angry.

If you'll notice skibum is still stuck on "dumb" going on and on about our President's transcripts. Never mind that NO candidate has EVER released their transcripts and that our President headed Harvard Law Reveiw. He just can't stand that the President is heads above him in intelligence and integrity so he makes things up!

They truly are pathetic excuses for human beings but they are all the far right has. No one of intelligence or integrity is left in the party!

I hope you and yours have Wonderful Holidays!

We did not have boots on the ground that could have gotten there anywhere near in time, that is just bs. Plus are we willing to make an overt ground offensive in another Muslim Country? Again quit being black and white and think of the nuances and the outcomes from different policy decisions. Yeah it is really a shi^^y outcome, we lost really good people.

As far as Newtown, your an absolute ASS&OLE if you don't think it brought nearly everyone to tears. You are just another hater.

Check the report out to see if we had boots on the ground or an ARMED drone, all that is BS! Read what the bi-partisan committee found. Then try and figure out based upon that, with the concern over a trap, why the people with the hard decisions to make, made those decisions based upon the facts in front of them. No conspiracy, just a shi$%y situation that cost good people their lives in a very dangerous part of the world.

Seeking is a hoot! Where else can you find such a bigot who is so enamored with herself that only she has the answers for everything.

You're correct though Seeking, I don't post anything of value. You have no values and would NEVER acknowledge a vadid discussion that you don't agree with.

You're playing the race card whenever a disagreement happens that you can't place a valid arguement to. Could you be the Bev with another log in name? Several of you libs have many different ones that you use.

On one hand, you are critical of Romney, as if the election race was still happening. But darn anyone that is critical of the annointed one. Is the Republican party having issues today - sure, and what's wrong with that? Change is good and you should have learned that at Duke.

Will the Republicans be blamed for going over the cliff? Certainly, no matter what they do for the Progressives need to go over the cliff to fund big government. Blame it on Bush, or blame it on the GOP or the teabaggers as you refer to us. The additional $80B or so will not change anything for big gov. They will spend it more rapidly than it can be received.

Be critical of the proposed plan B - Nancy is critical of it, and it's a plan she previously proposed.

Let's be real - Obama needs the money, rates will rise, but conservatives will be at fault. Get ready to pay more and thank the Obama for it!

Of course conservatives will be blamed for it. Romney excited the tea party by talking about cutting social programs funding by 10% which would have saved 60 billion a year at the same time he cut revenue 500 billion a year, spent 200 billion more on the military each year and restarted the space program at 50 billion or so a year and you wonder why most of the country wasn't buying Romney's line. What this country needs is someone fiscally responsible not fiscally conservative. Fiscally responsible is trying to spend less than you take in while fiscally conservative means cutting taxes and spend whatever you want. Why is it those on the right bash Obama so much on spending when he hasn't instituted a single major new program that wasn't paid for and most spending is funding Bush's tax cuts and programs and wars? At least Obama pays for what he implements like Obamacare. Bush never funded anything and Romney promised more of the same.

Well at least someone has stood up and said, I messed up. And took responsibility for there inaction. But when Paul Ryan cut what, like a half a billion from security for these people, Well what in the hell should we have expected to happen. These people just keep looking for a weak spot to and the found one. In reality we just can not cover all the bases. So the facts are no one person is at fault here. They did what they could with what they had. These were good people trying to help others, they knew the dangers. These people are true hero's in every sense of the word. Along with all the other hero's we have lost and the people of 911, God's speed to you all.

They had numerous requests for assistance...

They had security personnel asking to go in and assist...

Those personnel were told to stand-down.

FOR 7 HOURS THEY WATCHED AS THE VICTIMS WERE SLAUGHTERED!

This was certainly NOT a budget issue! You @!$%#s will do anything to avoid taking responsibility for anything!

If what you say is true witch I doubt, then this might of been a set up paid for by Romney. Reagan did that to win against Carter with the failed attempt to rescue the men from Iran. What is a few dead men when it can buy you an election. Romney sure seemed to know just what happened just right after the attack. Remember he stuck his foot right in that big mouth of his. Then when someone asked him were he got his information from, then he knew he had better drop it. This Smacks of Romney and the Rep's Generals that hate President Obama. Just like Reagan/ Carter. I read the unclassified report.

No where in the report did the questions appear: who was in the situation room during the event, what actions were taken, or not taken and by whom.

These situations are logged, filmed and available for transparancy.

Where did the buck stop Mr. President?

Unfortunately, these questions may never be answered. There is NO inquiring media in the US anymore, and the more time that goes on without answers will be swept under the rug.

Chuck: Sick was right, the Iran fiasaco was under Carter. Reagan on the other hand concocted the sale of weapons to Iran in order to use the money to back the contras against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. When it blew, they used Ollie as a scapegoat to avoid staining the actor... And then went out of whack when the money ran out and the Contras started selling drugs to support their movement, and the Mexicans took the business over from the Colombians...

Terrorist attacks have happened under every recent president. Reagan sent marines to Lebanon and 399 marines died when this contingent all housed in the same building were killed with a truck bomb. We pulled out immediately after that.Bush had 9-11 with almost 4000 dead and numerous Embassies attacked yet the right acts as if this is a personal failure that a terrorist attack that killed 4 people was a failure by Obama. That's why you can't sell it. I'd say Obama's record beats the hell out of either Reagan or Bush.

sickofhtebickering: It seems you neither read much or get out much or are simply too young. Reagan nearly got impeached over his Iranian dealings.

While President Ronald Reagan was a supporter of the Contra cause,[6] the evidence is disputed as to whether he authorized the diversion of the money raised by the Iranian arms sales to the Contras.[2][3][7] Handwritten notes taken by Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger on December 7, 1985 indicate that Reagan was aware of potential hostage transfers with Iran, as well as the sale of Hawk and TOW missiles to "moderates elements" within that country.[8] Weinberger wrote that Reagan said "he could answer to charges of illegality but couldn't answer to the charge that 'big strong President Reagan passed up a chance to free the hostages.'"[8] Still, many believe that it is unclear exactly what Reagan knew and when, and whether the arms sales were motivated by his desire to save the U.S. hostages.[citation needed] After the weapon sales were revealed in November 1986, Reagan appeared on national television and stated that the weapons transfers had indeed occurred, but that the United States did not trade arms for hostages.[9] The investigation was impeded when large volumes of documents relating to the scandal were destroyed or withheld from investigators by Reagan administration officials.[10] On March 4, 1987, Reagan returned to the airwaves in a nationally televised address, taking full responsibility for any actions that he was unaware of, and admitting that "what began as a strategic opening to Iran deteriorated, in its implementation, into trading arms for hostages."[11]

The issue that Chuck described was NOT regarding the Iran-Contra Affair. Yes... We all know and remember that event.

Chuck was talking about the failed attempt to rescue the US hostages held in Iran... Surely you remember Jimmy Carter's failed attempt with the helicopter crashes and Delta Force deaths... Right?

THAT is what we were discussing. NOT the Iran-Contra Affair. Chuck said in his comment that the entire rescue debacle was concocted by Reagan to help him win the election.

The common claims that we "beat the business cycle" and that it's "different this time" that precede the bust are being sung from the rooftops. If history is to be any guide, the crash is coming. Soon. This "Great Recession" has been the boom, financed by fiat currency and cheap credit; please stand by for the bust. We voted for this asshat and now it's time to pay the piper. Fools!

Navy is off his med's again. Do you know what you even said? You were just rambling on and on. Nothing makes sense at all. The Great Crash was in 07 when your Hero W. was in office. He caused this mess and everyone buy you knows it. President Obama has done the things to keep us from going into full Depression. You Rep's do this every time you get into power. No wonder we kept you out of power for 40 years. I am willing to bet it will be another 40 years before Rep's can buy the Election like they did in 2000. If we have learned anything from 2012, Its that money isn't going to buy elections anymore. For all the money the Koch's and others like them poured into Romney and others, well they didn't do so well now did they. And in 2014 The House will be retaken by Dem's again. Then you will have to increase your Med's. Nave are you one of the 47% Mitt talked about, As a Vet, aren't you living off the Government, just a little? Talk about bit the hand that feeds you.

Navyveteran: To find a fool find a mirror. You RWNJ's bitch about Obama's spending even though most of what he spends is taking care of the 6 million Bush dumped on unemployment and welfare before he left. Obama hasn't made getting any benefits easier to get. How can anyone be stupid enough to think the Romney plan to cut revenue 500 billion a year, start up a new space program and increase military spending 200 billion more would balance the deficit? I've never heard anyone on the right including Romney ever explain exactly how that would lead to a lower deficit. At least 52% of the country aren't idiots who can at least do simple math. For RWNJ's, go back to school.

ozziey01. You and Ted N. are such ass holes. You think you have more rights to own any kind of guns you want, no matter what. Well you don't. Those kids and all people around this Country have more of a right live they you have a right to own Assault Weapons with Clips that hold more then 9 shots. I was taught to hunt and it was one shot one kill. You guys think you need 30 shots to kill a deer. Hell when you let off the trigger, all that would be left is hamburger. I think if you live on the Mexican boarder then you could get a special permit to own a Assault Weapon, because you live in a war zone. Other then that, No way. No one needs to have those kinds of guns. Having them just because you can. BS. And As we seen in Newtown she couldn't secure the weapons. Hell she tough this Nut case how to shoot these guns. Am I the only one that has a problem with that. I think she is one of you that thinks that bad black President is going to come get you.

No one needs an AR15 unless live on the Mexican boarder. That is a war zone. We need to close the Gun show loop wholes, That's where the dude in Az got his gun. He could never have passed a back ground check. We need to stop the sell of the clips that hold 30 to 100 or more rounds. I own guns also, but we have to stop the madness. And yes these guns were legal. So that just shows you that legal guns kill people too.

I think you're under the impression that I'm a pro Bush person? If so, you're wrong. If he knew about the threat and did nothing, which I believe he did then he should face the consequences for 9/11. And if Obama knew and did nothing then he should too. Sound fair or too much like absolute morals? Our whole system is messed up. Politicians can do anything and get away with it, Repubs and Dems alike.

But don't worry, taxing the job makers will solve everything. Hey! Maybe we can take France's advise and tax at a 75% rate? Yeah, yeah, that will solve it. Just because the U.S. has gone light years over the credit card limit, let's just keep spending.

Or do you just say what your told to say? Or do you just work for one of the many Think tanks the Koch Brothers fund to spread the lies they need to have spread around the country. Because no self respecting person would vote for someone that is going to do things that hurt you. That is like loading the Gun for a person that is going to shoot you. And Romney's plan was to cut social program spending 60 billion a year but increase military spending 200 billion a year and start a new space program. Assuming you can do simple math Obama doing nothing would beat Romney's plan. As for taxing the job creators Bush gave them a 400 billion a year tax cut and created an average of only 32,000 jobs a month over his 8 years the lowest since WW2. Boehner was trying to defend it on a news program saying Bush's tax cut actually created 8 million jobs but 5 million were lost during the great recession. Politifact rated that claim false. They stated even claiming the majority of those 8 million were due to the tax cut much less all was dubious at best since Bush had the lowest job creation record since Eisenhower.

That is why she is fleeing the administration right now. In 2016 she will have distanced herself from this enough. Dummycrats memories are only good for about three years, after that it is replaced by the oft repeated party line. She will be remembered as a great woman once they have about three years to polish the turd. They will expound on how good it tastes and the welfare crowd will eat it up. Make no mistake they will sell her back to us. Remember, "Half the people are of below average intelligence". They only had to convince 2 % to go Dummycrat, the rest were a lock

But the single biggest thing we have to do is to take upon our self's To stop the Bribery that has been allowed for years now. Out law Lobbing, Over turn the Supreme Court that opened to flood gates of money from anyone and any Country to find its way into our Elections. I don't want China telling us who they want us to elect. congress will never stop there gravy train. So we the People will have to do it for them, along with term limits. None of these people should be full time. I say a good place to start cutting back is in Congress its self.

Pretty convenient for Hillary Clinton that she fell ill and hit her head just before she was required to testify about all this that happened within her department. She should be independantly investigated. We all know that she wants to run for President in 2016, she wanted to distance herself from all of this by resigning. After the fact is too late Hillary! We know that you, Obama and Obama are up to your eye brows in guilt for this fiasco and the coverup that took place to help Obama get re-elected. Maybe this and your head will still haunt you during the next election anyway. Hope your uhh head is better. Yes, that was being sarcastic.

Hillary "concussion" Clinton should resign. The only reason Susan Rice went out there that Sunday is because Hillary wouldn't do it. Hillary told Obama "I'm not going out there and saying those lies because they're career killers". So Obama got Rice to do it with a promise of being Secretary of State. And now Rice is paying the cost of listening to Obama.

GOP/Tea Baggers are a lost cause. Now they can go in the History Books as a Party that never gained any substance but hot air and being raceist, anti minority, and anti female.

Almost anyone would beat the candidates that support the tea party agenda and therefore can get the republican nomination. Hard to sell a racist women hating party that sells itself to the highest bidder. The republican plan. Cut taxes on the rich and spend lots of money on a bigger military with less money.

Always said that Obama, Hillary and the rest of the Mob would get the blame put on someone else, but have no fear for these men, I am sure Obama has already gotten them new jobs for taking the fall for him. Just wondering how far down our country has to go before all of the freeloaders decide that Obama is killing our country? I know the answer, when there is nothing left to give them. Obama now wants gun control laws to take away our rights to own a gun, but won't talk about Fast and Furious, so they want gun control for us but not for them. I have owned a gun for 50 years and have not shot or pointed it at anyone, he can't say that, I don't know the exact death count from Fast and Furious but I believe it is close to thiry, then we can count these four. I guess this administration is allowed to kill at random whoever they choose. I don't belong to the NRA and never have.

Syria produced their OWN chemical weapons, just like Iraq did. No one's saying those are Iraq's chemical weapons today, except people looking to excuse GWB's lies. Doesn't matter anyway, now does it?

They already acknowleged they have them, to use on foreign aggressors, back in July.

I've heard the "trucks rolling into Syria", but I also know we bombed milk trucks during the Gulf War and said they were Scud launchers.

They know that she would probally win. Newt come out on tv and said that if hillary ran in 4 years she would win and the Gop would lose again. Now to all the rep out there thats calling for her head. Are you for real? Bush has killed how many innocent people in Iraq, He left the real war go to do so. He concentrated on Iraq and put afgan on the table. I say bring Bush up on treason charges. drag the intell service up on the hill and say wtf. who told ya to say this to start a war, for the war machine.

Try reading more. The state department has indicated they're keeping a close satellite watch of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles. Which means we know where they are. Don't worry the government knows about Syria having WMD they just didn't tell you. I read there's an estimated 80 countries known to have WMD mostly nerve and mustard gas. Do you know which? If not, why would you know about Syria? You're not important enough to inform.
