Obama and Boehner meet at the White House

NBC's Congressional Correspondent Luke Russert talks to voters about the fiscal cliff and the thing they would like to see most… compromise

President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, met Monday morning at the White House in their continued efforts to reach a deal on the impending fiscal cliff.

"The president and the speaker are meeting at the White House to continue their discussions about the fiscal cliff and balanced deficit reduction," a spokesman for Boehner said, declining to release any further information about the talks.

The fiscal cliff talks between the president and House Speaker John Boehner have seen some movement, with the Republican leader showing some willingness to budge on the president's demand for tax increases on the wealthiest Americans. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

The Republican's trip to the White House came after reports this weekend suggesting Boehner had offered increased tax rates on millionaires and a one-year extension in the nation's debt limit. Those proposals, if accurate, would represent some concessions to Obama on the question of how to best resolve the combination of tax hikes and spending cuts set to take place at the end of this year.

Talks between Republicans and Obama appeared stalemated for much of last week, as Boehner and Obama each made and rejected new offers from the other.

I agree... I wish there were a way to stop their pay. They are certainly not earning it- they are supposed to be looking out for the best interests of the American people- and this partisian bickering only stands in their way.

Boehner is nothing more than a puppet. Just like Romney would have been. The Republican party has become an ideology more than a political party. They are controlled by corporate greed and havnt had the good of the nation at heart for a long long time. It really puzzles me that regular Americans actually support this group of liars and thieves. People are so narrow minded.

the people must do with less to protect military wasteful spending ? the US military can't account for 2 trillion dollars in the past 20 yrs.we spend twice as much as the rest of the world combined in military spending.it is better for our economy to build a school and leave it vacant ,then to build bombs.

Republicans and Democrats should meet have way, this is 50 -50 of the total amount needed. This is Republicans should increase taxes from the 50% of the amount aiming of course on minimizing the impact on the lower and middle classes and Democrats should diced from where to reduce and cut spending of the other 50% also minimizing the impact on the lower and middle classes.

Well, today Obama offered up Social Security COLA rate changes. I can't believe he sold me out. You wanted my vote? I'm not going to supporting democrats at the polls. Obama also plans on cutting tax rates for the top earners and corporations in the fall of 2013, to below what they are currently. People need to leave the democratic party in droves and join Socialist Party USA. Lets reverse Obama bargain corruption, raise the earning cap on SS instead.

          @ ...U.S.A:

Obama, can cut Defense spending by 3.7 trillion. Defense still owes from the two Bush Wars. A good debt collector would go after them for not paying their bills.

Barney Frank has some great ideas where to start giving the defense budget its haircut.

The Defense Budget takes up 51% of the annual discretionary budget. Imagine a home owner that spends 51% of their net disposable income buying new home security systems every year because they are scared ts time for a peace dividend for the people and not shreading the safety nets.

Its time to get the guy buying annual home security systems off the Kool-Aid.

          @ Checkered...:

Obama won and has the mandate. Why is he acting like the wimpy cowardly scared democrat? Why no backbone? He has been bought. Look at the democrats anti middle class record:

          Gutting Welfare,

          Billions for Bankers,

          No Help for Workers,

          No Help for Foreclosure Victims,

          Republican Healthcare Plan,

          More attacks on Civil Liberties,

          Afgan Surge,

No Prosecution of Wall Street Bankers,

          Drone attacks on Civilians,

          Support for Iraq Invasion,

          Libya Intervention,

          Syria Intervention,

          Wall Street Bankers in Administration,

          No help for Black Unemployment,

          No Jobs Program,

          Gitmo still open,

          NAFTA.

Now he is trying to set up an entitlement austerity trigger for the 2014 elections with his criminal Wall Street friends. Trying to rob the Left and force us to vote democratic against our own interests, so cap-saps can offshore my 40 years of paid in premiums.

This actually sounds like something moving in the right direction. So let's negotiate; set the line at $350k instead of $250k. Negotiate for 2 years on the debt limit. Then lets get some spending on the table. We need to come up with 4 trillion or we go back to the sequester.

No more unemployment. Let them build stuff like the WPA did during the great depression.

I don't like either of their proposals. Why not let the Bush tax cuts expire for everyone? Plus make dividends and capital gains taxable as ordinary income. Just with this, we've removed two of the common themes:

                                              • Bush tax cuts only benefit the wealthy
                                              • Millionaires like Buffett and Romney not paying their fair share (i.e. 15% vs. 39%)

When everyone who earns income pays some sort of income tax, we all have a shared interest in how our tax money is being spent. When I hear the lynch-mob mentality of "tax the 2%", (which by the way is interesting that the President originally started with the 1%, but realized he needed more people to blame) it reminds me that it sure is easy to scream, demand, stomp your feet, etc. that someone else pay more. Get everyone paying, and you will have a vested interest in how it is spent.

And what is this crap about $1.2 trillion over 10 years? When is the last time anything has lasted 10 years? Give us your projections for 4 years, broken out for each year. I don't like either plan, they don't go near far enough.

Hey reporters! Do your job and get us some details on projected deficits for years 1 through 4.

With the Federal Reserve printing cash by the trillions to buy US treasuries (cause nobody else is)(to artificially prop them up) and dead mortgage backed securities from the "to big to fail"(but soon to fail) we have this fiscal cliff nonsense which is ignoring the multiple elephants in the room. Peter Schiff so eloquently put it yesterday " The Fed will keep printing money until the collapse".
