Republican Hagel is likely pick for Pentagon post

Former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel is likely to be President Barack Obama's next pick for Secretary of Defense, although the White House has yet to finalize its decision for the cabinet appointment.

A former Pentagon official tells NBC News that Hagel is the likely pick for the post, while another White House insider says that, while Hagel is a top candidate, it's unclear if the president has made a final decision.

A senior administration official tells NBC News that "no decision" has been made on the nomination.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that President Barack Obama spoke to Hagel about the position on December 4.

Hagel, who served two terms in the United States Senate representing his home state of Nebraska, has been a member of the president's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board as well as a member of the faculty of Georgetown University since leaving Capitol Hill in 2009.

He also accompanied then-Senator Obama on his campaign trip to Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East in the summer of 2008.

While in the Senate, he was a member of four Senate committees, including the Committee on Foreign Relations and the Select Committee on Intelligence.

NBC's Carrie Dann contributed to this report.

As an Obama voting Republican Chuck Hagel has my vote. I thought he was a good moderate Senator with an independent streak. This is why I like the President. He makes sound decisions.

For all of you who are excited about Hagel because he is a Republican, think again. Use to be a good Republican. Now he is a very liberal figure and is not well respected in his own State. he's been in Obama's back pocket for a few years and if you want someone who thinks like Obama, then he's the right person. For those of us who would like a person who was willing to be more representative of the country, this is not the right person. By the way, I am from Nebraska and voted for him on several occasions. Not anymore.................................

You cannot point to ONE SINGLE INCIDENT where Hagel was in Obama's back pocket

                      JUST ONE !

                      AND...

Chuck walked away from YOU NEB. RWNJ's for the best reason....you were ALL unreasonable !

I might remind everyone here that in 2002, Hagel overwhelmingly won re-election with over 83% of the vote, the largest margin of victory in any statewide race in Nebraska history.

So THE most POPULAR GUY in NEB political history...is a RINO today eh?

Then I guess you RUBES deserved to be had the 1st time & EVERY TIME THEREAFTER ?

How much brains does it take to call yourself stupid in public for the sake of party unity ?

you're dismissed & will be UNmissed as an AMERICAN .

Excellent choice. Hagel has enough fiscal sense to trim enough waste from the pentagon that the fiscal cliff cuts won't matter.

Oh no, not Hagel! Doesn't Obama know that Hagel is not hand chosen by AIPAC? That Hagel is against Israeli extremists - also known as "settlers" - who are attempting to settle all of East Jerusalem and the West Bank? Hopefully, all GOP members will stop this end around by a politician not owned by the Zionist Movement.

Chuck Hegal is dumber than the dirt they farm in Nebraska. Claiming Chuck Hegal represents a bipartisan choice is farsical. The two term senator from Nebraska is as good a choice to head up the Pentagon as anyone who has served in the past twenty years, but that's not saying a whole bunch.

It doesn't matter to me who sits in that chair, but I'd prefer you smirked while you lied than try and pass stupid past me with a striaght face.

Chuck Hagel is a good man who left the senate on his own and he is a fair person who isn't a lock step republican by any means. Great decision to choose him.

If I was him I wouldn't take it. Republicans hold Huntsman in contempt because he accepted an appointment to be the ambassador to China. Who needs that kind of grief from anyone. Particularly someone like Hagel who has always served his country well. Most of these people on both sides have never done anything to serve the country except pay taxes and when they are afraid they will be increased 3 or 4% they act like they have been gut shot.

Chuck Hagel wouldn't be a bad choice, not at all. However I for one would have liked to see either Gen. Wes Clark (Ret) or Gen. Colin Powel (Fmr. Secty of State) for the post of Sec. Def.. All three men have the exp. NO doubt about it. However I believe that the two retired Generals have the inside exp. to deal with shaping the military for the future.

Lindsey Graham and the senile John McCain must be rejoicing about their "high tech lynching" of Susan Rice. These mediocre bastards aren't worth a dime when matched against Ambassador's Rice career, including McCain's years as prisoner of war. He left whatever honor he had at the Hanoi Hilton and chose to attack Ms. Rice even before she was nominated. What could be his motivation other then sour grapes and , yes, race. Ambassador Rice is not the first black official on the Obama Admin. who's been ferociously attacked by the right. Condi Rice got a chance to get a hearing and was confirmed by both Dems and Reps. Her claim of "mushroom cloud" eclipses whatever Susan Rice did or didn't do. Condi had been Nat'l Sec advisor to Pres. Bush and was privy to intel reports (they were conflicting) and supported the deadly Iraqi war.The new American Nazi Party (GOP) wouldn't give Amb. Rice that courtesy.

As for Graham, the coward closeted Log Cabin Senator's claim to fame, was his despicable performance during President Clinton's impeachment hearings as one of the GOP managers. What a sorry POS he's turned out to be. He also left the code of honor he swore to uphold while in the service the minute he joined poltics and attached himself to MsCain. They'll pay for their cowardly act. Hopefully some Tea Party nut will mop the SC fields with his ass on the primaries. Senator, you have no backbone and simply lowered yourself to appease the nuts in your party. Hope you lose big time.
