Obama agenda: The ‘regulatory cliff’?

“While the ‘fiscal cliff’ of looming tax increases and spending cuts dominates political conversation in Washington, some Republicans and business groups see signs of a ‘regulatory cliff’ that they say could be just as damaging to the economy,” the AP reports. “For months, federal agencies and the White House have sidetracked dozens of major regulations that cover everything from power plant pollution to workplace safety to a crackdown on Wall Street. The rules had been largely put on hold during the presidential campaign as the White House sought to quiet Republican charges that President Barack Obama was an overzealous regulator who is killing U.S. jobs. But since the election, the Obama administration has quietly reopened the regulations pipeline.”

Excessive regulations have been shown to cost jobs, so do we really want more regulations and fewer jobs at this time?

Instead of the 'review of excessive regulations' that Obama promised years ago, we just get another 'War on Business' that will further weaken our economy.

It appears that Obama may actually rival the 8 year record of economic stagnation set by FDR during the Great Depression with his similar anti-business policies.

If there had been better regulations during past republican administrations this country would not be in the mess we are in today... Housing market, 401 k's, auto industry etc.

Also, the income division between the middle class and the wealthier in this country would not be as far apart... Under the GOP the rich have gotten extremely richer while most of the middle class have slipped into poverty... (One in five children in America go to sleep hungry, every night.)

When climbing the ladder of success in America, your not suppose to pull the ladder up when you make it to the top, so that no one else can/could do the same as you...

Big corporations paying tens of millions of dollars to the CEO, while at the same time laying off hundreds.thousands of employees... Just doesn't make sense...

roy wilson give us a break. business has too much power and you live in fear of fear. business does not control the economy, buyers do. regulations are to keep a safe and playable table. you want to owe your soul to the company store, i do not. we need more regulations to remove workers from surfdom and restore balance to government.

Good to see the republicans have found another word to scare their followers, (cliff) now it's the "regulatory cliff". What's funny is the republicans and their followers are going off the real cliff, not their imaginary cliff.

Maine was ranked last on Forbes' list of states friendly to business. That was in 2010, and the news helped get Tea Party governor Paul LePage and a whole passel of Republicans elected.

Fast forward to 2012 and guess what? Maine is STILL last on Forbes' list of places to do business, this dispite the governor and his minions focusing on "rolling back regulations,"and cutting taxes.

seems to me the Republicans are the problem. i'm not for any party so i don't discriminate.taxes are and will always be there, but it's just fair that EVERYONE should pay the same percentage, no loopholes or anything for the wealthy or for businesses. put a cap on pay as pertaining to the job( i really don't see why WE have to pay an elected official hundreds of thousands of dollars a year) be real about it, that's a part of why the poor are getting poorer...unreal pay for a position that most intelligent people could probably do( i can say yes or no and argue with the best of them) :)..as for Boehner, how in the Hell does he still have a job??? HE seems to be the one blocking EVERY attempt by the White House to make a deal!!I say WE the people should vote him out and get someone else in that isn't about letting the "rich"(he himself is...) get more and more tax breaks. I thought We the People were the one's to make decisions for this country?? why can't WE vote on issues that could break or make the country? LET'S VOTE ON IT!!!!

Clearly leaving businesses to regulate themselves does not work well in many industries, including the power industry, pharmacies (especially compounding pharmacies), oil drilling onshore and offshore, natural gas drilling (issues with fracking and ground water, earthquakes, etc.), pet food, food supply, financial industry, industries that pollute (of which there are many)....

I don't think we have too many regulations. I have seen businesses spend significant monies and time fighting regulations which in the end, turn out to be not onerous at all for other firms to comply with.

The Republican strategy of fighting any and all regulations may be losing favor with some business leaders who are now facing significant risks from due to pollution, extreme weather, financial risk, etc. I think we will begin to see some pressure exerted on Republicans to back down from their assumption that all regulation is bad.

Boehner is following the republican talking point again in his so called news conference, but this time he's got a chart to point to. Which is "spending is the problem". Same old republican thoughts, if you say "spending is the problem" long enough the citizens will believe it. Then you throw in a republican manufactured chart that follows your talking point.

You know how to get Boehner's attention? Turn on a camera. He loves the camera.

When a company misbehaves through greed or activities that unfairly takes advantage of others they need to be stopped. If those who share that industry can't sit on the wrongdoer than the government must step in. Those who complain about regulation have done it to themselves.

It reminds me of a community that shot off fireworks every July 4 (done by professionals, of course) when some irresponsible nitwit shot off a bottle rocket (illegal) and instead of going up it went to the side and right into a little girl who was picknicking and watching fireworks with her family. The result was that all forms of fire works are now banned. Even though the big ones are done by professionals it was thought that the event drew the idiots and so the whole thing was banned for everyone responsible or not.

Thousands of regulations and laws controlling or banning something or other exist because of irresponsible people whose acts ruin things for everyone.

Don't complain about or to the government about regulation complain to those who were and are irresponsible for ruining things for everyone else.
