House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) sent a new offer on Tuesday afternoon to President Barack Obama in hopes of reaching a deal to resolve the impending fiscal cliff.
Specific details are scarce, but the proposal apparently was made as a counter-offer to something the White House had proposed over the last few days. A GOP aide said the White House plan offered $1.4 trillion in new revenue, but the GOP still not moved from offering $800 billion in revenue.
Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told NBC News the following:
"We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs. As the Speaker said today, we're still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the "balanced approach" he promised the American people. The longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff."
Speaker of the House John Boehner provides an update on the fiscal cliff negotiations, placing pressure on the White House to reveal how they intend to compromise with House Republicans on spending cuts.
Since this is a new offer, it’s assumed to be different from the one put forward last week by the GOP that called for $800 billion dollars in new revenue through closing tax loopholes and deductions, along with an additional $600 billion in savings through cuts to entitlements.
A GOP aide opined to NBC News that the president must move more quickly on “the spending side” before any deal could hope to be accomplished. A major sticking point to date has involved how much ground Republicans would give on tax rates for the wealthy.

I guess the GOP still isn't serious. The House has had the worst approval rating of any congress in history...unless they see it from the perspective that they have the highest disapproval rating...I'm guessing theyy're hoping for Obama to back down but the big O has the mandate and the fact that rates will go up regardless. Estate taxes from 35 to 55% isn't going to make the wealthy very happy.

If you seem to forget it was the Dems who put the defense cuts and the tax increase stipulation in the bill before the debt celing bill would be approved it was the Rep. who insisted on the spending cuts. And why should Obama get everything he wants there is a thing called checks and balances so one man can not rule everyone sorry but I do not want to go the way of hitler but I guess you do.

He has not offered ONE compromise(as he said that Washington should do) What in the H__— is wrong with $14 billions of new revenue and cutting worthless programs that are not necessary to run the government? Obama only wants to destroy the wealthy Americans, make government the wealthy(take a GOOD look at the wealth your Obama has made these past years), destroy the middle class(he lies about that too!).........then what you have left is a RICH government and poor peasants-----in other words a communist country. Do you libs realize that by putting this idiot back in the White house you have just raised your taxes. The Fica will expire acording to white house aide so their is the first TAX INCREASE FOR EVERYONE then there is your oh so belovid Obamacare which will INCREASE EVERYONES TAXES for the next 3 years before it even takes effect and if you own any buisness you have a 3rd increase that is mandetory to pay for each employee which goes to the insurance companies to offset the cost for preexisting conditions. And he has already said he will let us go over the cliff unless he gets what he wants. That would be a Third increase WE WILL ALL GET. He does not care about the middle class just the power and he wants more of it.
Obviously you aren't following the negotiations. Obama wanted to vote to give the middle class tax extensions and even make them permanent. The repubs WILL NOT vote on this matter unless it includes the top 2%. Guess who does not represent the middle class? It's Grover Norquist and his pledge for repub that are ruining everything, not Obama.

There was also a cut to the payroll tax of 2% which is also set to expire. That cut was taking money from Social Security which has caused it to be in deficit the last 2 years and is separate from the income tax rates.

You obviously don't listen to what he has said I quote"The income tax holiday will expire at the end of the year and I will not renew it" And the top 2% pay more taxes then the other 46% combined the other 52% don't pay any and 50% get free money at tax time so instead of taxing the top 2% that create most of the jobs why not cut the free tax money those people are getting.

Republican plan...cut entitlements, cut loopholes, cut anything but don't change the tax rate on the wealthy. Who do you think those 'LOOPHOLES" will affect the most? Mortgage, education, child deductions all hit middle and lower class'. Wealthy will just pay cash for what you and I must finance.

Who gives you your job the poor man the middle class man? Who gives you your stock increases the poor man or the middle class man. By definition rich people are rich - so they can buy their houses outright and don't need the mortgage deduction, and can hire lawyers to get around any new loophole-closing attempt - what they can't do is make 39% mean anything different than 39%. When banks were stodgy and made money slowly but surely (i.e pre Glass Stiegal repeal), they were the ones making money on your house - that's why I have three properties and no mortgage on ANY of them!

I am in the top 2% because my household income is above $250K which according to the President makes me a millionaire or a billionaire, and believe it or not I had to have a mortgage.

Obviously you know nothing about investing. All it takes to make the 39% go to 0% is to move money into "tax free" bonds.
Oh...you didn't know that the government is willing to look the other way when they are borrowing money...from rich people...or did you think the government borrows money from the middle class???
Clearly we should cut the salary of congress and senate firt, along with their entitlements which they really don't pay for. Lower their retirement checks; cancel their health insurance. They really only work part-time and are not entitled to all of these perks. Cut the amount of dollars they get to run their offices. That would be real savings.
The sad fact is that Speaker Boehner isn't the smartest guy on the block. He's still the guy who handed out tobacco industry checks (i.e., bribes) on the House floor some years ago when the House was in the process of voting on tobacco related legislation.
This is relevant to all of us because what he does or doesn't accomplish to negotiate successfully with President Obama and the Democrats will have a significant impact on all Americans. Here's to hoping he exeeds himself in doing what is best for the nation.

To use George Costanza's terminology, Obama has "hand" - he has no need to negotiate, and until the Republicans get this, Obama's only recourse is to let us go over the cliff and retroactively fix it. The Rich WILL pay a higher tax rate - the only question is whether the Republicans will make the rest of us suffer for a while as well.
Not to say that we don't need to spend less; personally I think we need to cut Defense slowly, and that we can cut Social Security by eliminating COLA Adjustments right away, and that we can slowly increase the age for Social Security and Medicare for people who currently are less than 50 (and yes, that does include me - I'm not being self serving)

With 2 1/2 weeks to go it sounds like the best deal would be to extend the SS tax break and a couple other provisions and then add back what is necessary Jan 1.
How can we justify a dividend and capital gains tax rate of 15% while we run a deficit every year? Freeze SS, and all other fed programs, and put in provisions to cut medicare and military spending overtime.
OMG if I hear the euphemism "revenue" used for tax increases one more time I will scream.

If you believe that the rich do not pay their "fair share," then you are a moron. The top 10% of wage earners in the US earn and average of $112,000 per year and PAY 70% of all taxes - 70%. Tell me that is not enough?
If you believe that the Republican tax cuts that George Bush and the Republicans pushed through put the nation in debt, your a moron. REVENUE TO THE GOVERNMENT WENT UP AFTER THEY WERE ENACTED. The debt spike was caused by other factors. Now Obama wants you to give more than 50% of all you make to government.
Finally, if you think that Obama will stop at "taxing the rich" you are a moron. He will come for the middle class and even the poor. He will increase taxes on everyone - he has no choice.
If you doubt what I am saying just think about this. George Bush's worst deficient was $260 billion and add another $125 billion in for the two wars. So we are somewhere around $400 billion max. Obama is running $1.3 TRILLION deficits each and every year. This is three times the worst deficit that Bush ever had. This is unsustainable.
Obama and the Democrats are promising to SPEND MORE. The money can only come from thee places:
1. Higher taxes 2. Economic growth 3. they can print more money (borrow)
Obama so far has brought out the credit card and money press and has reached his limit - he won't be able to continue borrowing. Further Obama has enacted multiple policies that kill jobs. So Obama and the Democrats have only one choice left - raise taxes.
However, the rich do not have enough money to tax - they simply don't. The real money is taxing the middle class and the poor. Obama and the Democrats will be forced to raise taxes on these to huge sources of potential taxes.
Obama and the Democrats ARE coming for YOU!

Let"s stop all the grandstanding. The people elected Obama and a republican House of Representatives. The people obviously did not want one party to control the government. Now Obama and the house leaders get into a room with no press allowed and don't come out until you have reached a deal. This is how negotiations are handled. No deal will ever be reached by public finger pointing.

If Congress wishes to address "entitlements", they should start with themselves by abolishing their "tenure", they should sign up for the "Affordable Health Care" (just like their contituents),pay into S.S. (like their constituents), pay into medicare (like everybody else) and they can forget about their pensions as well.
Congress can also abolish corporate deductions for corporate jets, yachts, penthouses, condos and fleets of corporate sedans. These are luxury items and operation of them should not be tax deductable.
I'm not gonna hold my breath, though.

Why is it when the tax cuts are for the top 2% they are called the Bush tax cuts, but when talking about the other 98% they are called the middle class tax cuts?

Why should a fair tax increase of 4% on millionaires cause the puppet GOP leaders to want to crush our economy for it, while some of the rich are telling us they don't mind an increase if it will help our nation? Why does everything have to land on the backs of those who can afford lousy services least? Social Security is solvent for decades! Medicare can afford to change the way it allows for the Pharmaceutical companies to name any price for their prescription drugs, without competition!

American labor is great and can outproduce almost any foreign country. But add overpaid workers, excessive government regulations, OSHA, taxes, union contracts which require you to pay laid-off workers, deductions for Social Security and Medicare, unemployment insurance, liability exposure and maybe just maybe you will see why this country is in trouble.
