John Boehner makes a new offer to President Obama in hopes of reaching a deal to resolve the impending fiscal cliff. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) sent a new offer on Tuesday afternoon to President Barack Obama in hopes of reaching a deal to resolve the impending fiscal cliff.
Specific details are scarce, but the proposal apparently was made as a counter-offer to something the White House had proposed over the last few days. A GOP aide said the White House plan offered $1.4 trillion in new revenue, but the GOP still not moved from offering $800 billion in revenue.
Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told NBC News the following:
"We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs. As the Speaker said today, we're still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the "balanced approach" he promised the American people. The longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff."
Speaker of the House John Boehner provides an update on the fiscal cliff negotiations, placing pressure on the White House to reveal how they intend to compromise with House Republicans on spending cuts.
Since this is a new offer, it’s assumed to be different from the one put forward last week by the GOP that called for $800 billion dollars in new revenue through closing tax loopholes and deductions, along with an additional $600 billion in savings through cuts to entitlements.
A GOP aide opined to NBC News that the president must move more quickly on “the spending side” before any deal could hope to be accomplished. A major sticking point to date has involved how much ground Republicans would give on tax rates for the wealthy.

Mr. Boehner, Ms. Pelosi wants to know how is tha gavel thing working out for you?
Offer or demand?
The only acceptable offer from gop gangsters is resignations and an honorable out.
Closing loopholes in the tax code is akin to cleaning up the waste in government programs. What needs to be done goes beyond these gooshy dreams of balancing the budget. Taxes have to go up and there has to be some cuts. It is time for our leaders to get real.
"some cuts"? I think we need about 500 Billion per year in cuts!
Lets go back to the spending level of 2008. The Great Recession ended in June of 2009. We don't need to be spending at 2009 levels any longer! Let's go back to the Clinton Tax Rates for EVERYONE! Why pick on just the top 2%? They already pay about 70% of ALL INCOME TAX REVENUES!
Both parties (I dislike calling them "sides") are making offers, but it appears nobody is reading the other party's offer. This is not how it is supposed to work. Both, democrats and republicans, are supposed to be working for the American people. About time they all give up the strutting and posturing and get to work on behalf of the nation.
This is a proposal? Offering to balance the budget on 'closing loopholes' and 'eliminating deductions' that they decline to actually name? They could've phoned this one in from a bar somewhere. In fact, they could put it on autodial since they keep doing this over and over.
Everybody knows that Boehner's just dragging this out until the last minute when he'll suddenly cave on his 'sacred principles', claiming that those evil Democrats forced him to do it. He's still going to face the mob of his ignorant supporters with their torches and pitchforks. Sure wouldn't want to be him.
Dave, you took the words right out of my mouth when you said the TGOP would like to close ' loop holes'??? Does any one know how many 'loop holes' so to speak are in the tax code that the GOP would filibuster and debate for the next hundred years? Give me a break. Doesn't take a Philadelphia lawyer to figure that out that Boner's ass is sucking slough water.
Our political show is mix of top 2-4%, vs the next 4-8% in pretense that they're the middle class abetted by little bribe routine that's actually about paying themselves and not about the under $50,000 group whom they are really stealing from.
Obama relies on his mob of ignorant supporters with their torches and pitch forks.

Who is to say what you are actually hearing is the entire truth and represents both sides of the equation? Note that if this was the Tea Party, and not the unions that did this, it would be all over NBC News...
NBC News, the American Pravda.
What else have they omitted and outright lied about?
Drew, you say 'What else have they omitted and lied about'? Tell me, please tell me, as you leave me in such suspence that I can hardy wait.
The president can't take Y-E-S for an answer!
Anybody ever notice that every speech by every republican in the last 3 years contains
"Creates Jobs"
Ever notice that they NEVER actually say "How"
GOP the party of Rhetoric.
Details Republican morons in Congress the American People demands details.
If the gov. would pay all the people unemployed say fourteen million of them, 800 dollars each week tax free, for two years it would cost 1,164,800,000,000 dollars. This would, stimulate the economy, boost manufacturing, create jobs and increase tax revenue. It could, lift real estate markets and help to increase , construction jobs. This would save money, by stopping all food stamps for these people, and unemployment money Also, it could reduce the amounts they pay in food stamps and other help later, If they were to apply, for this in the future, through means testing them at that time ! allow them to find work, as they collect this money, but, pay regular taxes on any money earned. This would create more tax revenue, This would strengthen the middle class workers, while saving Federal and States money; As it makes the base of our economy stronger. Also, if they take 20% from the 800 dollars from the top and give it to the states every week, it would be 2,240,000,000 dollars each week going to states,to help them balance their budget deficits and hire workers. This would create more good paying jobs and stimulate business. Also, it would create more tax revenues and this all would help to fund, SS and Medicare. Being optimistic, I think it would bring the GDP numbers up to around 7 or 8 %, during this time. The government, would have a better environment to cut waste and spending during these two years. Also, It could save the gov. money , when the health care goes into effect because, at that time many would be able to pay more for their health care. There are other benefits in this plan not mentioned, but this would get the country back on track, and it would more then pay for itself.
The SIMPLE TRUTH, the Republican Cartel is not capable of inteligent governance!
The 21st century Republican Cartel does not accept or understand DEMOCRACY. DEMOCRACY requires COLLECTIVE BARGAINING, COMPROMISE, NEGOTIATION and MAJORITY RULE!
The 21st century Republican Cartel is IRRELEVANT!
President Obama and Democrats, let the Republican Cartel fail to reach a consensus with you, this will finish the Republican Cartel, they will fade from existence and dissappear.
The Republican Cartel is sealing their fate with the extreme agendas they are pushing in state governments, this is implementing the end of the GOP.
