GOP makes new 'fiscal cliff' offer to Obama

John Boehner makes a new offer to President Obama in hopes of reaching a deal to resolve the impending fiscal cliff. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) sent a new offer on Tuesday afternoon to President Barack Obama in hopes of reaching a deal to resolve the impending fiscal cliff.

Specific details are scarce, but the proposal apparently was made as a counter-offer to something the White House had proposed over the last few days. A GOP aide said the White House plan offered $1.4 trillion in new revenue, but the GOP still not moved from offering $800 billion in revenue.

Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told NBC News the following:

"We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs.  As the Speaker said today, we're still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the "balanced approach" he promised the American people.  The longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff."

Speaker of the House John Boehner provides an update on the fiscal cliff negotiations, placing pressure on the White House to reveal how they intend to compromise with House Republicans on spending cuts.

Since this is a new offer, it’s assumed to be different from the one put forward last week by the GOP that called for $800 billion dollars in new revenue through closing tax loopholes and deductions, along with an additional $600 billion in savings through cuts to entitlements.

A GOP aide opined to NBC News that the president must move more quickly on “the spending side” before any deal could hope to be accomplished. A major sticking point to date has involved how much ground Republicans would give on tax rates for the wealthy.

The mediuan income in America in 1983 was $73 ,000 The median income today is $57,000. If it had grown equally it would be around$119,000. I think that is disgusting. God bless trickle up theory. The One % is now 288 times the median income.

Austerity.....That is such a lie. Did you just make that up? Median income in 1983 was $44K after adjusting for inflation. Why do you constantly avoid facts and logic? In fact, we had record median income before Obama took office.

What part of this mess do the fools in Washington not understand? If I make $10,000 a year (made up number) and have a cost of living that is at $15,000 (again, made up number. This is called an income to outgo problem. If on top of this I owe $15,000. . . Just cutting costs by $5,000 or raising income by $5,000 is not going to fix my problem. I need to get off my fat ass, get a second job, and stop spending money. . . DUH

Your post deals with family finances. It has no relation to sovereign finances. Especially for the largest financial entity in the world. The US government. Take a basic junior college course in economics please.

This is what I think of Boehner--SHUT UP! For crying out loud, just get the rich to pay their share of taxes. Everyone keeps saying that they need to "pay more in taxes", but in actuality they just need to pay their share of taxes and close all the loopholes. They're able to write off their kitchen sink for crying out loud. The lower/middle-class are sick and tired of hearing the whining from the rich. Just shut up and pay up!

GCCal: Dumbass! The rich deserve to keep ALL their money! They should not be taxed at all! After all, dumbass, YOU'RE paying taxes so they can live off federal welfare programs YOU'RE paying for. You haven't figured that out yet, have you? Of course not because you're convinced there are no federal welfare programs for the wealthy! geeeeeeeeeez.....

I ask, for your information once again, for an explanation how taxing the rich is going to solve any part of the problem in Washington. Please try to show a little intelligence in your post instead of pure donkey dung talking points.

GC - can I ask the opposite question? How can it hurt? It and cutting entitlements, trimming military spending and closing tax loopholes might get us most of the way there.

Something that will "run out" in 2037 is not OK. Stop saying that SS is fine and paid for and doesn't need changing. It will run out, and for anyone who is 37 or younger, you will see less benefits or ss taxes will need to be hiked up.

Most 37 yr old and younger are already advent on SS not existing when we retire, I know I am planning on not having it. If I have it fine, if not no biggie. Instead of pushing the "buck" down the road, lets fix it now.

Yes maybe you will retire soon and don't want to lose money, think about your kids and family because to sustain you, they will need to pay a higher percent or it takes a bigger cut from theirs.

Point is entitlements can not sustain themselves. We either cut them, change them, or pay higher taxes (everyone, as rich will not be able to cover the cost of 10's of millions of people retiring.)

The Repubs are going to be in for a shock when the masses rise up against their nonsense. But good luck with that.

All the fiscal problems are one THEY created, not the american people. The back and forth bickering and deal making are getting downright embarrassing. There is not a true statesman I know of right now. Just cowardly fools manipulated by their lobbyists and party membership.
