RNC launches effort to learn from 2012

The Republican National Committee today launched an effort -- dubbed the "Growth and Opportunity Project" -- to examine what worked and what didn't in the 2012 election. The news was first reported by Politico.

Top Talkers: The Morning Joe panel – including Mike Barnicle, Random House's Jon Meacham, and Willie Geist – discusses the latest in the fiscal cliff negotiations and a recent Bill Kristol Weekly Standard column on why the conservative movement is in "deep disarray."

The effort -- which will look at things like the ground game, messaging, fundraising, and the primaries -- be chaired by these five Republicans:
-- RNC member Henry Barbour of Mississippi
-- RNC member Zori Fonalledas of Puerto Rico
-- RNC member Glenn McCall of South Carolina
-- Florida political strategist (and Jeb Bush adviser) Sally Bradshaw
-- former Bush 43 White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer

The full release:

WASHINGTON - Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus today launched an initiative to grow the Republican Party and improve future Republican campaigns.

The effort, known as the Growth and Opportunity Project, will be chaired by five GOP leaders and is charged by Priebus with initially reviewing past practices and also making critical recommendations for the future in these eight key areas: 1) campaign mechanics and ground game; 2) messaging; 3) fundraising; 4) demographic partners and allies; 5) third party groups; 6) campaign finance issues; 7) presidential primaries; and 8) lessons learned from Democratic campaign tactics.

The group will reach out to hundreds of individuals including RNC Members, grassroots activists, donors, elected officials, community leaders and other important partners to gain insight and help the Republican Party form a solid path going forward. These leaders will be involved in one or more of these critical areas.

The Growth and Opportunity Project is co-chaired by five prominent Republican leaders:
Henry Barbour, National Committeeman from Mississippi
Zori Fonalledas, National Committeewoman from Puerto Rico
Glenn McCall, National Committeeman from South Carolina
Sally Bradshaw, Veteran senior strategist in Florida and national politics
Ari Fleischer, Former White House Press Secretary

They will report their findings to Chairman Priebus and make recommendations for a long-term strategy for the future.

"The Growth and Opportunity Project will recommend a plan to further ensure Republicans are victorious in 2013, 2014, 2016 and beyond," said Chairman Priebus. "I've appointed a talented group of individuals to study eight key areas, and I look forward to working with these outstanding Republicans as they conduct rigorous analysis and engage in important conversations. The work of the Growth and Opportunity Project will be critical as we move forward as a Party and take our message to every American."

"This is a time of great opportunity for the Republican Party," said Co-Chairman Sharon Day. "I am excited for the future of the GOP and am confident this project will strengthen our cause tremendously in the coming years."

How about learning to love and care about people that are not male and pale?

pale and male? are you a racist and sexist? Funny how the left 'loves' people that are broken down into grievance groups. They pick and choose who they love more depending on what benefits the party will receive via voting blocs

So, they only feel they need to learn from the 2012 election? That alone tells me they just don't get it. The demographics of this country have been changing for quite awhile, not to mention that this country is more liberal than the conservatives would choose to believe. This did not happen overnight, and to try and get the whole party on board this little fact finding mission may prove harder than they think. The Republican party invited extremism into their house and until they can extinguish or temperate that part of the party they can do as much research as they want, but the proof is in the pudding as they say.

I guess it means that Republicans are going to become better liars.

Capt. Smash

It really is not a politician's job to love or care, regardless of party affiliation. A politician's mandate is dictated by those that put him or her in office - and if John Q. Candidate was elected by a majority of pale males, then John will represent the desires of those who voted for him. Or that is at least the idea, as we all know it often doesn't work that way in practice.

Republicans in SoCal are for the most part well tanned. Perhaps that is why we remain a blue state.

Caesar Augustus-,

Are you brain dead or do you just lack basic reading comprehension skills?

Your party seems to favor both of those qualities in their voting block and you are indeed a highly qualified individual. Your party picks and chooses it's candidates by their bank statements and bloodline.

So I guess we are all a little flawed aren't we..

My arguments with true conservatives are a meeting ground. The difference we might have is that as you are a conservative, you miss them more than I do.

What works: liberal Democratic policies, strong Democratic candidates.

What does not work: Conservative, Tea Party policies; lying, candidates.

If you want to win, run a Democrat for 2016 as your party candidate.

Problem solved.

You'll probably be able to ignore this 'study' as it doesn't have any heavy-hitters on it so they'll either ignore it or suppress it if the 'right' (pun intended) results don't come out. They're too far in bed with their rich/corporate backers to change until the ranks get thinned further. This is a sop to show someone that they're 'doing something', that's all...

I seriously doubt whether the TPGOP will actually change its stripes. This is merely window dressing to make it look like changes are being made. Those of us in the 47-99% group already know how the 1-2 %/TPGOP uber wealthy folks really feel about us! They will most probably be more circumspect about how they talk about us when they know someone is listening rather than making any substantial changes! After all, contempt of the masses is highly ingrained in their brains.

That's a lotta percentages there, nurse, and some rather conspiratorial accusations. Remember, uber-wealth is not exclusively a GOP domain. I believe the there are a lot of Republicans honestly looking for ways to define conservatism in the 21st century, and make it relevant and beneficial to our great country.

in 2008 the GOP said the same thing. they just did what they always do. change nothing. if it wer'ent for the ACA law they would have never won anything in 2010. so now they lost big in this election and they are going to change. well let's start with michigan. passing a union busting law. ohio trying to pass an ultrasound law. wisconsin trying to stop same day voter registration. the fiscal cliff , cut all the programs they hate. not try to fix them just resrict who and when you can go on them. they will never change. and if the dems play it right the gop will not see real power for a generation. the gop loves to take a knife to their own throats and press and slice.

First meeting of this group will focus on how their voter suppression efforts were such a failure. What did they do wrong that Democrats were willing to wait in line for over 4 hours. This can't be tolerated if the GOP is to win national elections.

The religious right has isolated the Republican party, alienating women, minorities, the young, the educated and the irreligious. If they don't address that, they will become ever more disadvantaged demographically, and all the messaging, fundraising, and campaigning in the world will not be able to overcome that.

My suspicion is that they will continue with the same things they did for the 2012 election and just try to figure out how to further manipulate it to hopefully get votes in the future. Never learn.

No, they've learned that oversaturating the market doesn't work. They need to find ways now to silence democrats. Union busting is the go to strategy to eliminate funding, but look for them to also try to limit individual donations to campaigns further or to try to remove the preferential treatment campaigns get in ad rates.

Notice one of the goals was...fundraising--apparently not enough $$ to keep the lies and contempt for most Americans covered up--true GOP sentiments bubbled to the surface more times than even Priebus (sp.?) could plug. Did I read right W's Toady is in on the remake? That means Rove will be slithering around the edges again. No remake possible as long as the baggers hold sway, get rid of them and the GOP may have a chance, I wouldn't hold my breath. 2014 looms and I am getting out the vote to dump Rubio and Rick Scott and some other baggers

The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) have no "Cognitive Abilities." It is hard for the Teabeggers to learn anything. When then like to burn books, and refuse to check any facts. Now the Teabeggers are also 'paranoid,' and they have no clue of how the United Nations works. That was presented clearly last week. The Teabeggers are clearly "Learning Disabled" on many levels. Their ability to comprehend what 'compromise' means very limited. The "Teabegger Clowns" have no understanding of what 'fairness' means, and they have no tolerance for others. The real question for the Teabeggers is as follows. How can the Teabeggers learn? When they have no concept of what 'intellectualism' means?

We have been fortunate to see the beginning of the demise of the Republican Party in our lifetime. They have been revealed as the paid operatives for the Corporations and Wealthy Elite. No amount of reversal could save Romney after his 47% comment revealed his true intent and position. Priebus is the perfect front man to reinforce their platform's lack of compassion and equality.

    Here's a couple of idea's

Stop listening to the special interest groups who could care less about the general public.

Get rid of Grover and Rove, as they are a cancer in your party.

Try voting for what's best for the majority of Americans

    Stop creating manufactured crisises.

Stop deficit spending and blaming the president for same.

Stop trying to ram your religeous ideals down the throat of Americans - face it Roe vs. Wade is the law of the land.

Stop the work arounds via ALEC to privatize social services and giving sweetheart profit deals to corporations at the expense of the American Tax payers

Try listening to what the American public needs to excel.

Forget the trickle down theory and starving the beast - It doesn't work and the American public knows your motive.

Come up with a candidate that doesn't lie so much and can make a stand for what he believes in - It's call integrity; right now your party has none.

Quite being a pawn to the coorporations and "No" the coorporations are not people admit that and help change the laws for same.

Support the President once in a while - Admit it some of his ideas are good and have brought the US out of the depression.

Quite trying to abolish the EPA - My family needs clean air and water to survive. Strike down the law that Fracking companies are exempt from the clean air and water act.

Stop fighting legislation that will bring jobs back.

You say you love nd honor veterans but why do you vote against them?

In general - Grow up this is serious business, America needs you.

Republicans simply cannot win elections without misleading Americans. Romney was proof of that. He let the cat out of the bag over and over with his 47% comments, binders full of women, etc. Romney was the epidome of the republican party with his distain for many Americans.

Americans saw Romney as just another front man for the republican party. And perhaps voters figured out that any meaningful progress in this country, historically, came as a result of work of the democratic party.

Yes SUIII, for republicans to be honest, they need to change their name to "The Corporatist Elite Party." Its pretty hard to win elections with a label like that. But they worked so hard to attain that label and bad habits don't die. So their game plan will be to continue their corporatist ideology and at the same time, try to present a false/BS/good guy/ image. Look ma, its not the same old elephant. This one has lipstick on!!!

This rebranding will become a beauty contest, at best.

Bone structure, clothes, haircuts and nice white straight teeth. They might hit the jackpot and find some vaguely ethnic Southerners who can talk North Eastern. If these Labradoodle candidates can think and talk fast enough to dazzle the beltway press, they might manage to contain their losses to no more than 2012.

A coherent policy that they can discuss intelligently would be refreshing. Ryan was sold as the wonderboy and second coming of Christ on the basis of a flawed nonsense budget. A Republican who can add and subtract will be hyped as the greatest political mind of our time. If they could attend a picnic on a hot day and not insult anybody, the Dems could be in trouble.

The GOP does not care one bit about the middle class and those who need jobs, need Medicare, need Social Security and need Medicaid. We are a country that cares about the less fortunate and want to help them. Republicans are the elite arrogant people who could care less about the country recovering after the downfall caused by Bush. Bush's wars and the republicans who agreed to everything that was not good for this country but agreed to all the spending. Americans see the GOP for what they are. They care only about the one percent and they are in the one percent themselves. Being so indifferent to the middle class and working people who want our country to recover and want jobs created for Americans. It is time to see that the GOP is dishonest and working so hard to deceive Americans with their lies.
