Vice President Joe Biden tries food samples during a visit to a Costco store on a shopping trip in Washington, D.C., on November 29, 2012.
Joe Biden: Delawarean. Vice president. Vocabulary muse.
In new data announced Wednesday by Merriam-Webster, a much-quoted Bidenism from the 2012 campaign set a record for the year in online lookups during a single 24-hour period.
In the 24 hours after the Danville, Ky., vice presidential debate, after Biden famously labeled a claim by Paul Ryan "a bunch of malarkey," look-ups of the noun's definitions on the dictionary's website spiked by 3,000 percent.
According to the Associated Press, Merriam-Webster does not release data for individual words, but the site gets about 1.2 billion hits annually.
"Malarkey," a pseudo-expletive of Irish origin frequently used by the Scranton native, is defined by the dictionary company as "insincere or foolish talk : bunkum."
Merriam-Webster also announced Wednesday, per AP, that "socialism" and "capitalism" were their most looked-up words of the year, after a hard-fought election that largely centered around the role of government in the economy and Americans' lives.
For the record, both are defined thusly:
Capitalism: (noun) an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market
Socialism: (noun)
1. any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2. a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

Malarkey -- This term, meaning insincere or foolish talk, blarney, seems to have an Irish lilt about it, yet it appeared first in California during the late 1920s. The Oxford English Dictionary cites its first appearance as ``malaky'' in J.P. McEvoy's 1929 novel ``Hollywood Girl'': ```That's a lot of malaky,' says he.''
Scholar William Sayers, who reported his extensive research on ``malarkey'' in the Summer 2002 issue of the journal Western Folklore, offers four possible theories for its origin: 1. the modern Greek word ``malakia'' (softness); 2. the Cockney slang term ``Madam Misharty'' (nonsense), supposedly based on a fortuneteller with that name; 3. a morgue keeper named Mullarkey; 4. ``a socially visible oyster shucker from the 1870s who took this name in preference to `Mallorca' (his Portuguese father's name) under the mistaken impression that he was Irish.'' Whew!
But a skeptical Sayers offers his own persuasive explanation. Irish-Gaelic, he notes, has a word ``meallaireacht,'' meaning ``deception, allurement, amusement.'' ``Meallaireacht'' may have been imported by Irish immigrants to the U.S., where American ears heard it as ``melarcht'' (with a ``ch'' sound as in the Scots ``loch''). ``Melarcht'' may then have become confused with the Irish surname ``Malarkey.''
Bull@!$%# works.
There also was a verb bull meaning "to mock, cheat," which dates from 1530s.

Merriam-Webster has pretty much laid out the basic difference between conservative economic theory and lefty liberal economic theory. The lefty liberal Dems don't yet have America fully under socialist control, but, they are well on their way there.
Joe in Agony
Democrats are liberal socialists at worst ... from wiki-
Liberal socialism is a variant of socialism that includes liberal principles within it. It supports a mixed economy that includes both public and private property. It identifies legalistic and artificial monopolies as the fault of capitalism. Liberal socialism opposes laissez-faire economic liberalism and state socialism. It considers both liberty and equality as compatible with each other and mutually needed to achieve greater economic equality that is necessary to achieve greater economic liberty.
It might work if markets were actually free. They haven't been for years. You can't have capitalism when corporations all merge into one. Capitalism relies on having competition and when big guys crush little guys, it is no longer capitalism nor does it have any chance of working for anyone's betterment but the big guys doing the crushing. The failure of people like the loon from Albany to understand these simple facts is why the Republican party will soon become like Whigs and other parties throughout history who failed to see their own faults.
Bev,
Did you not want to say "know" rather than "no?" Just trying to save you being accused of putting forth malarkey.
Joe in Albany -
You have pretty much demonstrated the fundamental Republican reading and comprehension problem.
Very few of us "lefty liberals" advocate government ownership and control of the private sector, or the elimination of "private property".
Joe in Albany - you insist on showing your absolute and total stupidity. The continued socialism nonsense shows exactly who you are. And, if you're that stupid - you are not even close to making the money you claim! But, you are a good little, moronic Republican!
Joe in Albany
Merriam-Webster has pretty much laid out the basic difference between conservative economic theory and lefty liberal economic theory. The lefty liberal Dems don't yet have America fully under socialist control, but, they are well on their way there.
Joey,
The problem for you though is you don't what to discern. Every thing you posts is so damn funny to you; regardless of whether or not it's true. Those hysterical outbreaks of yours are the signs of an idiot.
Amused in the Midwest
The free market is alive and well. It is easy to point at the "evil corporations" but free market means just that, free market. The consumer bears great responsibility if the success of the competitive free market. Nobody forces anyone to go to Super Mega Mart to buy all their shiny bits, but if they do decide it is more beneficial to the economic health of their community to save a few bucks at Super Mega Mart than to buy the same things from local suppliers, that is hardly the corporation's fault. Simplistic, I grant you, but I think many people forget their personal responsibility to a successful economic system.
One thing I know for certain is the GOP is full of "malarkey". That truth is proven daily on FR with the ramblings of another Joe.
Socialism is public education and schools, the interstate highway system, regular highways, public streets, sewer systems, water mains, garbage collection, snow removal, fire departments, police and sheriff departments, the highway patrol, city sidewalks, street lights...... None of these things makes us communist; they do, however, along with capitalism make us the United States of America.
It seems to me, knowing that you didn't build that alone, that Joe in Albany fails to compensate or even acknowledge the money he has made was made by other people not him. He is just the recipient of the fruits of their labor. Speaking as a lefty liberal, and a person that has made lots of others rich, Joe I sincerely feel you need to be screwed without a kiss. I hope you lose your wealth either by government intervention or your own stupidity so you can feel the pain. You need pain boy.
Bev - I believe Joe's problem is he isn't capable of discerning.

BCWC!
Thanks to you, I learn something new everyday around here! ☺
Easy, Bev. I am a Republican and you no we don't look kindly upon homonyms.........
BCWC, ditto what Feisty said.
"Sockeye Joe" is completely indicative of the larger problem the republican party has, they base their campaigning on falsehoods, they continually preach them over and over again to no avail, even when the majority of the electorate has determined it is "malarky". By the Romney campaigns own admission they lost all the swing states where guys like Joe (their last dependable voting bloc) just could no longer buy into the malarky and either did not show up to vote, or voted for Obama. We are in no way a socialist counrtry, at least no more or no less than we have ever been, the silly rhetoric on the right is failing republicans badly, it did not stop the democrats from taking the Oval office, the senate, and gaining seats in the house inspite of gerrymandering and the fact that house seats are not statewide elections. The electoral college has doomed them from ever seeing the Oval office again if they persist in trying to campaign on things that the majority of the country know is not true but people like Joe can't help themselves from insisting are true. Joe and people like Joe do democrats and liberals a great service by sticking with the malarky to the bitter end and beyond.
John in Battle Creek, at the risk of sounding preachy I would ask you not to wish harm to Joe, I like your posts and feel you are a decent guy, so I find it unbecoming that you would wish Joe bad luck, it may have something to do with my feelings of the arguably silly notion of Karma, but in any event it seems uncharacteristic of you and I feel you may have just lost your temper for the moment. If you feel I should mind my own business, I perfectly understand.
I am sure Joe will set me straight if I am wrong, but I believe Joe's investments are largely the result of him working under union contracts and being the beneficiary of the very kind of system he now inexplicably rails against. As I said before that is a losing attitude and strategy and that leads to it's own form of punishment in and of itself politically and otherwise. In any event I am glad Joe is financially stable and I know he will be glad if republicans put an end to this "socialism" he hates and means test him for any government benefits he has paid into over the years. If you want to wish something for Joe just wish he gets what he says he wants.
Forrest, It would seem that we are more Socialist than before. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. We must change as the world changes or perish. So as the world has generally moved from the feudal systems and absolute theocracy of the past we have become more and more liberal and thus more Socialist. I don't believe we should be totally Socialist or will we ever be that way but, by the same token, neither should we be totally Capitalist. Capitalism is a good thing and we should embrace it. I am a Capitalist and you probably are too. We invest in the stock market through IRA and 401K accounts or directly through a broker.
So Capitalism in and of itself is not the problem but those who are greedy and happen to be using Capitalism to feed their greed. It has happened before and we had to regulate the Capitalists punishing those who play fair because of those who are greedy and want more than they should have.
There are Democrats, Republicans, Independants and a bunch of others who are Capitalists and who believe in a degree of Socialism. A good balance between Socialism and Capitalism not only makes a better life for ordinary people but the wealthy and businesses too. If enables us to strive for a more perfect union, ensure justice, provide for domestic tranquility, provide for common defence and promote the general welfare of all who have the good fortune to live free as Americans and those who, while not Americans, are afforded the same under our Constitution.
You sound like a fair and reasonable person, with a fair and reasonable assessment Adler.
'Biden' (Noun), Drooling idiot with sleep disorders. EX. Don't pull a Biden at the wedding or else. A fan of the Pres but not his bafoon sidekick.
This "socialism" thing is particularly funny when I look at my home state. Voted something like 70% for Romney. One of our two US Senators is a former GOP governor who before that was CEO of one of the few socialist businesses in the US--the state-owned Bank of North Dakota. (There is also a state-owned grain mill and elevator which markets flour under the brand name Dakota Maid). BND got a lot of attention in 2009 because, as a state-owned business, it was well-managed and one of the most solvent banks in the US.
Your right F. Grump, I did lose my temper, I just can't stand it sometimes. I worked for my money, I made many people richer because of my talents and my work ethic. I made mistakes, I made bad decisions, I also paid for them. I have had health problems in my life, however I have turned out to be some what lucky and some what successful and I know that I didn't do it alone. Its funny to me, I paid my taxes and when I made more money I paid more taxes. I never in my life felt it was a punishment. Fines are a punishment but taxes are my contribution to pay for the things I use and to help others. I find I am agreement with John Fugelsang said.
"If you don't want tax dollars helping the sick and the poor then its time to stop saying you want a government based on Christian values."
Now I am not even a believer, but I feel it is everyone duty that can, to extend their hand to help those that need it.
A great deal of the conflict between Capitalism and Socialism is based upon nothing more than semantic hair- splitting, and dictionary definitions don't even begin to describe the realities of living under these different systems.
Too many people have conflated Capitalism and "free enterprise", acting as though the two terms were synonymous and interchangeable. This is far from true. Free enterprise simply means that anybody is free to start and operate a business endeavour with minimal involvement by the state. Capitalism assumes the existence of a very small class of capitalists, also variously known as the 'ruling class' or 'nomenklatura', who are the ones to make all of the decisions and who collect the vast majority of the profits; and a far larger class of workers, who perform all of the neccessary work but are paid the bare minimum possible by law, in order to maximize the profits of the masters. Other means by which the master class wring the most money possible from their enterprises include: Not paying workers for extra-long hours; not providing a safe or healthy workplace; not obeying laws regarding the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials; decreasing the amount or quality of the good or service provided to customers while jacking up the price (especially prevalent when government services are let out to private contractors);and combining to create cartels in order to crush competition and fix (high) prices.
A system of socialized democracy involves the means of neccessary production being held in common by the citizens (or 'the state', but most democracies recognize the government as being the property of the people and not the other way around), as with medical care, power generation, highways and other infrastructure, higher education, and military hardware. In these types of businesses, every employee is motivated to do their very best because they are owners, as well as customers, unlike in a capitalist business, where all but a very tiny 'manager' class know that they have no realistic hope of ever advancing, and the resentment and despair unavoidably depresses worker efficiency.
Americans, including your humble scribe, have been indoctrinated for decades to believe that Socialism is always, invariably and unavoidably an evil, destructive system, in which everybody is a police informer and attending church will get you fired and/or sent to Siberia for a hundred years. The examples of Romania and Cuba, which were/are military dictatorships, are played up, while the examples of Canada, Germany, Scandinavia and the Netherlands are studiously and determinedly ignored.
Lastly, it should be observed that in the recent economic collapse (which was indisputably caused by the very same laissez- faire policies that the Republican Party continues to champion), the countries that came through the best and suffered the least were those with the most socialized economies and the highest percentage of unionized workers- those states named above, which also continue to kick our asses in pretty much every meaningful measure of life quality.
Like I said John you seem like a decent guy, and I could not agree more with the phony claims of wanting a government based on Christians values and then proposing policies that do everything but represent those values.
For all you morons who are critical of Joe from Albany, there is no doubt that two of the three definitions of socialism (#1 and #3 for those who can't discern them) do fit the liberal Democratic agenda.
Republicans just love making fun of VP Joe but he's been kicking their asses for more than 35 years.
He certainly didn't learn how to kick any ass in the military. Perhaps his case of "Vietnam Draft Asthma" has been cured.
I love this, "the most looked up words were Socialism and Capitalism".
Hmmm, obviously the American public is too stupid to understand what socialism is and does to a country and her folks. Otherwise, they would not have voted for what they now call their president.
"He certainly didn't learn how to kick any ass in the military. Perhaps his case of "Vietnam Draft Asthma" has been cured."
Yes, And Phil Bredesen, Howard Dean, Brian J. Donnelly, Roy P. Dyson, Al Franken, Dick Gephardt, Dennis Kucinich, Chris Matthews, Robert Reich, Bill Richardson, Marc Udall, Henry Waxman and a bunch of other Democrats
But not as despicable as the draft dodger-in-chief "Slick Willy" Clinton who evaded and reneged on serving in the military so he could go to London, lead anti-war protests, and start his career as a sexual predator.
Well, there you have it. The entirety of Obama's reelection campaign platform (all except for the "rich white people are evil" part)
Obviously you are part of the 99.9% that stil don't understand what Socialism means, despite quoting it's definitionin your post!
I don't recall President Obama running on a platform of government ownership of the manufactruing and distribution sectors of our economy.
TNSEVOL - ZMAN2012 is part of the Republican party that is too dumb to understand reality. I thought they might actually progress to some form of intelligent conversation after having their heads handed to them but, no chance! They are as dumb as ever - maybe even dumber!
According to this definition, the one I suppose the Republicans are referring to, I already live in a socialist society, since I work harder than most people but make less money. This was true under Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, and every president during my lifetime. It is now true for many salaried people who are expected to work longer hours with no more pay. But that is not Obama's fault. Look to the corporations that will do anything to squeeze another penny into their pockets.
I read that definition of socialism: hard to see how anyone can apply it to anything President Obama has done or said, but that's the Republicans strategy, and they're sticking to it.
and the Republicans' contribution to the political lexicon: swiftboating. They must be so proud.
............I guess the GM bailout, and the cell phone give aways came from private sources, then. Oh yeah, and where is all that money going to be redistributed, that comes out of the pockets of successful Americans, and who decides where it goes?
Sorry.....pure socialism
Thanks for proving Feisty's point - right wing posters have no idea what Socialism is. But hey, it you want to define socialism as distributing tax payer paid cell phones to .0001 percent of the population, by all means, try to get the definition approved.
Now what is really funny about the right wing posters on this site - they will next try to convince us that .0001% of the population is the majority. The madness never stops.
Learn how to read. It doesn't how much of the product/monies are (re)-distributed by the government.
ZMan -
Actually both ideas started under GW Bush, that infamous Republican Socialist (and evil rich white man).
You are the one with the reading comprehension problems. Socialism would be if the government OWNED the cellphone manufacturers and the cell phone stores, not merely using government funds to purchase cellphones.
Quit your crying and get on with life. GM is still majority owned by regular stock holders. No one is redistributing anything except Republicans trickling money to billionaires and oil companies. If you can't stand on facts, just keep standing on the bull@!$%#.
ZMan2012
............I guess the GM bailout, and the cell phone give aways came from private sources, then.
GM paid its loan back with interest. Cell phones are donated.and stated under Bush
Q: Has the Obama administration started a program to use "taxpayer money" to give free cell phones to welfare recipients?
A: No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.
The president has no direct impact on the program, and one could hardly call these devices "Obama Phones," as the e-mail author does. This specific program, SafeLink, started under President George Bush, with grants from an independent company created under President Bill Clinton, which was a legacy of an act passed under President Franklin Roosevelt, which was influenced by an agreement reached between telecommunications companies and the administration of President Woodrow Wilson.
http://factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/\
Learn something!!!! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
If I volunteer to buy poor ZMan a cell phone, will he stop posting all this malarkey?
Heck, Z - you can have mine. I bought it myself, though. What does that make me?
The world according to Republicans/Conservatives: The U.S. was created in January 2009, which coincidentally coincides with president Obama's inauguration as the president of the U.S.
What a bunch of Malarkey!
Hillary 2016 ONWARD!
ZMAN2012 - and the cell phone give aways came from private sources - I don't know if you're a liar or if you're truly that damned stupid. The cell phone giveaways was done by the FCC which has been giving free phones to the poor since 1996. It changed to cell phones when they became so popular and easy to get. They realize that everyone should have access to phones in case of an emergency. It is NOT Obama's program - idiot!
JoAnne in PA - you bought your own phone? It makes you like the majority of Americans who can afford to buy their own phones. But, ZMAN is - of course - convinced that everyone has their hand out for freebies because they LOVE not having money. Let's remember, Republicans are too dense to understand the concept of poverty!
Where did zman go?
JoAnne, that's funny. I'm a leftie liberal who bought my own computer with my own money, guess that means my computer and I are both socialists; worse, I live on a socialist-paved street with a socialist street light at the end of my capitalist and personally paid for paved driveway. The city streetlight, by the way, sits on my privately owned land, so it is half socialist and half capitalist!
Z-man like his fellow GOPers have long lost the meaning of socialist and communist because they label anyone the disagree with and any idea they don't like as being one or the other--then threaten to secede from the USA. "Out, damn spot."
Zman,
You have been drinking too much tea and listing to the bat crap crazies. Perhaps you may want to get a job and get off the welfare.
Seeking -
Yeah, I bought my own, but before you get too impressed with my new conservative principles of paying my own way, I should add that it's one of those cheap trac fones that doesn't do much of anything and to be honest, I don't think I've used it twice in the last three months. If it would make ZMan happy, I'd say I was waiting for the government to re-charge it for me, but truth is, I'm not nearly as good a socialist as I am a Luddite. I'm still trying to figure out how I ended up on this dang board to begin with!
JoAnne - LOL!!!!
Remember too, that those phones don't have unlimited minutes on them. Basically they are for emergencies and to keep track of kids in the streets where there are plenty of creeps willing to do them harm. To hear some of our right wing friends they want people to believe that there are several million welfare queens sitting around talking on the phone all day. If they believe that they have never been in a household like that. Unfortunately I have sister-in-law that has made some poor choices in her life and has required public assistance. She has a job but it doesn't pay enough to fill the needs of her and her kids. She has one of those phones and because of it her son's life was saved. So righties before you go about spewing your lies and hate experience or see for yourself how those you love to condemn live and get their real beliefs about being on the government dole. Most don't like it.
The crappy economy brought on by two unfunded and unnecessary wars coupled with American jobs being sent off shore finds many people out of work and forced to live on welfare. They hate it and want to get back to work. So instead of looking down your noses at those less fortunate than yourselves why not work to get them good paying jobs so they can get back to work being productive, paying taxes (so the rich won't have to take up the slack) and bring America back to the top as we once were.
How much money did Dick Armey get in his pension from FreedomWorks?
$8 mil.
This is a grassroots organization? For whom?
Dick Armey
TNSEVOL, exactly.
That's the amount it took for FreedomWorks to get rid of him. He supposedly no longer meets their criteria for a tea party extremist.
AlaskaGirl, that was funny. $8 mil. Wow.
Liberals called Freedom Works and the others like it "astro turf" for a reason.
AlaskaGirl, that's funny and from what I heard, true. Not sure if it was Mother Jones or one of the others that did the digging and reported what they found, it cost $8 million to convince Dick Armey to leave.
@Jody:
It turned astro turd.
Hello...First Read...Is there anyone out there?...Can't...get....real....news....only....malarkey.
Fancy - clearly you're more comfortable with FAUX news!
Hope someone will take the time to read the definitions of Socialism to the TeaTards and GNOPers.
Larry - it will do no good. After reading it, you'd have to explain it over and over and over......
What posters have lost track of is how the word, malarky, and those economic/social concepts have become part of the American conversation. Our language contains words and ideas that immigrants have brought from all over the world - to me, that is so cool. Words have a lot of power. We should always be careful about how we use them.
Socialism is also defined as Obamaism !!
A little Socialism is good for you.
So Ken, you prefer corporate Fascism?
Just asking.
I can't speak for Ken but I can confirm I do. I would much rather my income came from a corporation than a government check in the mail. Once you graduate the 12th grade and get a job you might understand that Adler. But until then... Good luck with the GPA !!!!!
Stevie boy, I am probably old enough to by your grandfather or father. I have a Masters degree so never assume anything pal. Many you condemn that are on welfare would also rather have a paycheck than a government check but with their jobs having been sent over seas they are stuck. But narrow minded greedy don't seem to understand such things do they, Steve?
Why did you print this silly Article and, how. without inside information, does Feisty get first slut.
lol... Wow, all the liberal sheeples came to dinner to talk about this one. The best part of this article was the fact it gave us all a complete list of all the liberal forum experts. All those folks that know nothing for themselves but simply repeat the malarky of the democraps. I am sure this will all be well documented on Joe Bidens website if he can ever remember the number. You will ahve to excuse Feisty and Bev. They are still all excited over their 66% income tax increase they got in Illinois to help balance the budget and rightfully so. Last year the budget defecit was 13.5 billion. This year after the democraps huge tax increase (with no spending cuts) the budget defecit is.. 14.5 billion...
http://progressillinois.com/posts/content/2011/02/07/report-despite-tax-hike-deficits-still-loom-state
Steve - your post shows your total lack of understanding of even the basics of what is going on in the government. But, it clearly shows you spout the Republican talking points like a good, uneducated child. Now, come back when you can have an adult conversation and actually form some coherent opinions about something!
I would expect a comment like that from the left.. Only an intelligent liberal like you or Joe Biden truly understands the problems... lol....
Still enjoying your 66% income tax increase in Illinois though huh? You know the one that did nothing to reduce the defecit there but I am sure you are convinced it will work "this time"
Maybe if I put it in caps you and Joe will get it this time.
DESPITE TAX HIKE DEFECITS STILL LOOM
http://progressillinois.com/posts/content/2011/02/07/report-despite-tax-hike-deficits-still-loom-state
This is just like the right wing nut jobs getting their talking points from Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. Some of us know reality and some of us don't. Then again when one lives a life aloof and distant from the real world (see Romney) they easily show disdain for and trully ignorance of the reality of life outside their gated community and glass highrises of corporations.
i've noticed fiesty and seeking only call names and really give no help to their party. making your childish remarks does not help people see your point of view.hey seeking is my punctuation getting better? I'm starting to think fiesty and seeking and alaska girl are the same person and she pats herself on the back through this way. wow that would be sick
The author neglected to mention that the Merriam-Webster online dictionary has been updated to include Vice President Joe Biden's photograph in the definition of the word "stupid".
lol.
NH_Shellback - no, that photo is of Mitt Romney - with you at this side and little Steve-26... by both of you. Clearly you need glasses!
and clearly you could use a good dose of IQ. You been sniffin Feisty's hiney a little too long and the aromatic odor of liberal theory has you believing gold smells like malarky.
SeekingSanity - See you are still giving up that love for Joe. How many mentally retarded "love children" have you an "Ol' Stupid" produced now?

You forgot a couple F4E.. Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi. or you could just say.. The liberal dream team..
GWB ??? Really?? That comment was a perfect example of liberal waste....
Wow, the density of the GOPer minds? Repeat their malarky enough, and the GOPers believe every word. Fox Noise should be taken off the air. Rush Slimeballs, and every other talking head fot the GOP should be removed. Their are just way too many proven idiots out there, that need a better education. Send the GOP back to school.
Malarky=What every good Rethuiglican says!!!!
Actually, Spencer, we should relish the fact that Limbaugh and the other hate mongers are on the air. We do have free speech and their rantings, repeated several times in this year's campaigns, may well have resulted in a loss for the very people such hate mongers support. Besides it is fun to feed the trolls.

we need fox to correct the spin msnbc puts on the air. obama seems to think the un is a good thing. most of the ideas he has is the same as the un. the un agenda 21 that is already being implemented in the usa is against any private property if you don't believe me look it up. it's not a dem or repub thing its both that would like complete controll. it scares me how people only listen to what the news offers and does no research to see what is really going on. now i'm trying to figure out what brought on my rant about the un
I just read an article where Congress, both houses, has just passed a law banning the word lunatic from public law. The word idiot is still okay.
One would think that they would be working on more imporant things unless, of course, they are afraid that they may legally called lunatics. With no reason to veto it, the President is expected to sign it without fanfare like hundreds of other insignificant bills that will be presented for his signature.
The MW definition of socialism is so outdated. It excludes several dozens of European parties, it excludes the current president of France as well.

Obama Promises America: "I Will Not Rest Until Everyone Can Find a Job" over and over again
The president - will be taking a 20 day vacation in Hawaii this month, at a cost of over $4 million dollars to the taxpayers
That jobs report coming out this Friday - must really be a sweet one
He must have meant "I Will Not Rest Until
EveryoneEvery Illegal Alien Can Find a Job". After all he did grant millions of illegals the ability to get work permits so they could compete for jobs against 23 million unemployed and under-employed American workers.Republicans and teabags don't like ole Joe, because he is honest and tell them the truth. When Joe calls repugs and teabags a$$holes, it's because they are. 98% of americans know Joe speaks the truth, it's just that some of that 98% won't admit it. It's to bad that they won't admit it. But that's alright, I am just glad he is a democrat, we have honesty on our side. Obama is the same way. Repugs and teabags don't know what honesty is.
gustifer - 98% of American knows that "Ol' Stupid" Joe is the Village Idiot of the Democrat Party.
If this had been Palin, NBC would be giving us a different spin.
So even the most ardent anti-socialist seems to have no problem blending this element of "socialism" into capitalistic practices. We have as evidence the disparity of compensation between men and women doing the same job. There are other less obvious examples. My my, we have so many budding "socialists" within the ranks of conservative practitioners.
Good Ol' "Blarney Joe". He's such a man of the people, he doesn't have to speak English, when talking directly to those under his spell. This all becomes much clearer, when you remind yourself that he used to represent a state that isn't much larger than some University campuses! Get a grip folks!
What about the English language is American?
I'll wait...still nothing? That's right! Get over yourself.
Define terms, making definitions, discovering.
Latin root for Mal has been used as a prefix for bad or evil.
Latin roots lascivia or ludus clearly indicate <lark> lightness of thought of play.
So using the mal prefix to the work lark (Mal+Lark+ey) makes Malarkey.
So something like MALICIOUS + LARK expressed in political context means to combine or misdirect think funny to cover some evil intent.
Politics if nothing else is the art of misdirection.
NBC's Carrie Dann has included definitions of Capitalism, and Socialism and indirectly Communism to misdirect clear and serious thinking, so as to prevent the serious or malicious nature of Economic systems from further discussion? While these so called or 'alleged economic' systems have been under doctrinaire discussion for more than 300 years, but by being so voluminous in literature, in human tragedy, progress, success so costly any fresh study of them would be called malarkey.
Just as a little dictionary research would have shown great disparity in how the word malarkey came about, that same research shows that the approach taken in 'dictionaries' of repute fails to refer to the Latin origins of many words. Hence that research takes a wholly different path, were we see the merriment of youthful nativity with the heavy distortions of the evil intentions.
Those definitions of the three alleged economic systems, calls two of them theories, while describing all three as if they had no human component or excludes humanity entirely. Hence discussing one 'real' system against two 'theoretical' systems indicates a good bit of malicious intent or distraction. If the intend is accidental, then it is clear that centuries of conflict could be avoided if these alleged 'economic' systems could reconciled.
However the definition of economy has a 'science', as in 'economic science', is a really big bit of malarkey because the economic theory is always observational and based on collecting economic data, and is not based on the defining a system that includes all that we know about how the world works. For example a naturalist can see in the growth of a tree as an economic system at work, both internally and externally, the economist can only count trees harvested and see if that number corresponds to some other number, losing the relationship between the forest and the trees. The byline here is that the sooner we can get over the 300 years of doctrinaire history and get back to nature's examples the sooner we start solving human problems cause by misunderstanding economics. Really what capitalist would over look resources so underutilized, just to adhere to bunch of malarkey that include but a 300 year period of waste ? Make a choice, take a risk, invest in success or continue malarkey?

There are a lot of phrases Americans use resulting in people scratching their heads as to what the phrases mean. They probably go back to great grandparents whose great grandparents migrated to the US. Then there are regional phrases around the country too. One phrase I inherited from my parents was, "Everyone was carrying on like Who shot John." A friend asked me what that phrase meant and I really didn't know. Knowing the context my parents used the phrase in, it meant chaos, out of control, etc. I guess it was associated with finding out who shot John and all the chaos connected with an investigation. Who knows!
