As Republicans and the White House continue to jostle over the "fiscal cliff," the public remains pessimistic about a solution and is largely prepared to blame the GOP if no agreement is reached.
A new poll from the Pew Research Center and the Washington Post shows that only four in 10 adults believe that the two sides will hammer out an agreement to dodge the fiscal cliff by its Jan. 1 deadline, while nearly half (49 percent) believe no deal will get done in time.
The $2.2 trillion proposal floated by House Speaker John Boehner was shot down by the White House, which said Republicans' rejection of tax hikes for the wealthy and sweeping cuts to popular social programs are unacceptable. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
What's more -- in a trend surely being eyed by the Obama administration -- the public still appears ready to place blame for the impasse on congressional Republicans over the White House by a nearly 2-1 margin.
With a divide similar to public perceptions earlier in November, 53 percent of those surveyed said they would point the finger at the GOP for the failure of the negotiations, while just 27 percent say the president would be at fault.
The fiscal cliff counter-offer issued by House Republicans has one thing in common with last week's White House proposal – neither was designed to win any bipartisan support. The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.
While Democrats surveyed are far more optimistic than Republicans about an agreement (by 55 to 22 percent), all partisan groups appear uncertain about exactly what the consequences of the cliff's automatic spending cuts and tax increases could be. Only about a third of adults overall say they understand the effects of the fiscal cliff "very well," but over 60 percent say those effects will have a "major effect" on the US economy. But not as many respondents think that a tumble over the cliff will dramatically affect their own lives, with 43 percent saying the cuts and taxes would have a "major effect" on their personal finances and 35 percent labeling the consequences "minor" in their own lives.

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) speaks during a GOP news conference on the "fiscal cliff", on Capitol Hill in Washington, November 28, 2012.
The survey was conducted between Nov. 28 and Dec. 2 among 1,003 adults. It has a 3.7 percent margin of error among its overall sample of adults.

The GOP has worked mightily for the past four years to ensure this economy does not recover. All for their political purposes having nothing to do with the welfare of the U.S.A.
So, why would they not want to take credit if we go off the cliff?
It is exactly what they want.
We are now watching politics at its worst. Real wages have not gone up in 30 years and neither party knows what to do about it. Our taxes are very low for a modern society. Liberals argue for keeping social programs and conservatives argue for keeping defense programs (just like every other country in the world). It is not only not new it is boring. At least if we go over the cliff the public will decide who is at fault and respond accordingly. We fought two wars and didn't pay for them and deregulated the financial markets and blew up the economy. Now we are just arguing about who is going to pay for it.
Ron, I would have to think from reading your comments, that you simply don't know what you're talking about. The cliff WILL happen and it is mostly the fault of people like yourself. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?? Please open your eyes and realize that social programs are working and we may need even more of them.
Seems that most Americans have figured out that the "Nanny State" works both ways. Time for "Mother Republican" to wean "Baby Warbucks" off the public teat a little bit, he's become more of a burden than "Uncle Workingclass" is willing to tolerate. Time to be a big boy and contribute something instead of sucking us dry. 3% on graduated terms is not unreasonable. Don't expect Grandma to go hungry just so you can buy a new yacht this year.
If only the President could have a new Constitution that granted him emergency powers without judical review! Oh, wait, that's Egypt. Wrong "Arab Spring" country.
Back to Clinton era taxes and Clinton era spending as a percentage of GDP.
Oh - BAAARRRK can't do that. At least he is getting some golfing in before the collapse.
The King wears no clothes.
Propaganda. Start the drum beat that this is Republicans fault. Straight up propaganda.
Yep, that's how it works. Even though Pattie Murray BEFORE the election said that she wanted to go over the "cliff", even though Howard Dean said it was BETTER to go over the "cliff" than to make a deal, and even though Republicans actually OFFERED revenue in the deal, because of the LIES and the support of the left wing minded media, the Republicans will get blamed.
Even though Republicans have passed at least THREE BUDGETS that have died in the Senate. Even though Republicans passed JOBS BILLS that died in the Senate, and even though Republicans actually AGREED to revenue raising, the likes of MSDNC, CNN, ABC, CBS, AND NBC will make it clear that it's Obama that being "reasonable".
As he demand 1.6 TRILLION dollars in NEW TAXES that the middle class and poor will end up paying, another stimulus to pay off public employee unions, minor cuts in spending, and and UNCONSTITUTIONAL mandate to raise the debt any time he wants to.
The debt ceiling is not a constitutional issue. A statutorily imposed debt-ceiling limit has been in effect since 1917 when the US Congress passed the Second Liberty Bond Act. Before 1917 there was no legally binding debt ceiling in force, but there were parliamentary procedural limitations on the level of possible debt that could be held by government.
It is always fun to read how the liberal media is everybody but the FOX brand. As if the truth is only spoken on one station. I am a fan of the phrase,"The truth hurts". Plus just because your don't happen to feel the whole story is being told then go and get all of the facts, not just those bellowed from idealogs that love the sound of their own voice. Education doesn't stop in school, it should continue throughout your life, so get educated for once. By the way in your list you forget to include NPR, and BBC as non-neocon style media.
Give the Kenyan ALL the power he needs to really fu*k up America.
Boozer put the bottle down and pull head out of your smelly arse!!!!
and maybe come off the pipe too.
All this mindless banter gets us nowhere. The facts are: the liberal press fans the flames of GOP blame but more impactful is the now-entrenched Tyranny of the Masses. So, we minority GOPers can only watch in horror as our free-market, constitutional democracy is destroyed by selfish and clueless liberals who want everything for nothing. As a 5%er, I'll pay more taxes but I won't accept bogus spending cuts.
None of it really matters anyway.
A year ago there was a report that while Congress was at an 8% approval rating 86% of those polled thought that their congressmen/women were doing the right thing.
Nothing will change. Red states will stay Red and Blue states will stay Blue. Only those all important swing states will have any say on changing Washington and most of the time they will just elect the same idiots as before. It is hard to beat an incumbent in an election. Unless they do something stupid like saying that women's bodies have ways to terminating pregnancies in the case of legitimate rape, incumbents are always the odds on favorites to win.
PTI,
Just watched a program on the History channel about the Plague' in the 14th century. It showed how the rich and politically connected fled the cities to there secluded estates in the country and watched the masses die.
Seems to ring true even today, right boehner.
I believe taxes should go up on everyone and that the government should spend less. That's seems like the logic behind getting out of the fiscal mess we are in. The government needs to raise revenue and decrease spending, but I'm no expert and I don't pretend to be.
Doesn't anyone realize that ALL of the politicians WANT to get to Jan 1 without a deal? They're smart enough to realize that revenue needs to increase, and they can get the increase by waiting. They get to point the finger at each other, claiming the other party is intractable, and bonus for the GOP, they get to stick to their "refusal to agree to higher rates." Then on Jan 2, they make a deal to "lower taxes" for some folks, and "close loopholes" for others, and pat themselves on the back for "doing what's right for America."
I think we should just leap off this cliff. The Clinton Era taxes solved the deficit the first time and created a surplus that ole' Bushy gave away. Everybody needs to pitch in to get this done. Stop the fear mongering and lets just get on with it. Then they can focus on True tax reform and close all of those loopholes that are so protected by the wealthy. Plus don't forget about all those big business subsidies that come straight out of our (the working class) pockets to fat cats that gouge the end consumer.
Blame the politicians. Everything else is just Kool-Aid.
Absolutly they would be blamed. But the king and his court will not even think of any kind of compromise as he said himself. And to the comment of "The GOP should just do the right thing" what does that mean, what is right what the dems and the king want, really. Remember that there are two sides to everything. You are all fools if you think we will come out of this in better shape if the dems and their agenda are not checked or is socialism for all the flavor of the day for the sheep out there. I for one am very concerned about the direction of the country and the PEOPLE in it as there seems to be more and more of this just give them what they want mentallity. Or course that has always been the dems platform, promise them what they want and make everyone else pay for it.
I am sorry but where have you been for the past four years? Obama has always stated that we need to raise revenues. Apparently most Americans agree with his approach to the problems of this country. Accept the fact the American people rejected your 1950's approach and want nothing to do with it. If we go over the cliff so be it, and the blame will fall with the Obstructionists. They had a chance to come to the table and work on this but it was better for them to fall on the sword for Grover -- they are the fools and they do not respect their constituents. How dare they bow down to a lobbyist. Every time Bohner opens his orange mouth I cringe because he is so full of s*it.
The majority of Americans are idiots.
Take the blame, save the economy. Take Obama over the cliff and make him submit each Department's budget for a line by line vote.
If we're going to go, let's crash the world.
The Dems pushed long ago for return of the line item veto. The Pubs wouldnt have any of it. Lets bring it back. There is plenty of pork to trim.
Check out the video on federal taxing and spending which was posted on YouTube a few weeks ago. It is entitled ”I’m Proud to Pay My Taxes.” The video calls for courageous leaders on both sides of the aisle--"economic citizens"--true public spirited stewards who will rise to the occasion during our nation's time of need. Rather than running to the respective corners to attack the other guy and the other party--on either taxing or spending-- in order to aggravate and elevate the public vitriol--we need elected officials who will promote the public interest, fairness, and justice in trying to resolve the difficult financial issues that beset our country. This message may address some of the public angst as we move closer to December 31--and the so-called fiscal cliff.

we already know. Our future events.
You already know everything that I said and have written about is becoming reality.
It is not about recognition .
but the prevention of life. There's an old saying that I have used
since the beginning of time. When the grass gets to tall you must cut
it down.
I already know you're opinionated.
but this will not change. Only because you know no better than what we already know.
So when the truth comes out, and you have difficulty understanding.?
And you will. only then and then only reality will bite you.
in the meantime, look, learn, and listen, then think, and resolve, because there is always another alternative.
Yes, they'll be blamed....but by the Democrats. No surprise there.
The captains of this Titanic of a tragedy, Cantor, Boehner and McConnell want this ship to seek. McConnell has publicly stated that his one mission is to displace the Democrats. It appears that tanking the country is ok if he sees that as an endgame. The GOP hates poor, non-white, none 1%'s and stirs that pot constantly. They have blocked or attempted to block any initiative that might look like a success for the White House. In the end we are all losers but based on this poll I am joined by the 2/3's that see this as a Republican led mess and place is squarely at their feet.
GRAND OLD PARTY IS DONE!!!!!
Poll: NBCNews the most liberal, left-wing, nut-job, irresponsible, biased media outlet the USA has ever known.
Oh and Fox News the most obnoxious, out of touch, ignorant, biased, racist, wanta be media outlet the USA has ever known!!!!
Fox News...and totally pandering to their ignorant base. I watch Fox in horror and can not believe there are morons that follow that crap.
People, you are all missing this...we are being led instead of leading. This is a done compromise law Why are both sides trying to repeal it....
answer....because we have a 2 week memory span. let's all hold hands and tell both sides we want and need to go over the "cliff" and then both sides will see the light. seems like 45% of us think that way, the rest are arguing about who to blame....so which side are you on? ....The side of law or the side of anarchy?
The GOP has compromised on revenue increases. Obama and the DNC haven't compromised on anything. Obama has a 'my way or the highway' mentality.
It seems like our President won the election Rip van Winkle. The GOP hasn't done a damn thing.
