Obama takes fiscal cliff case to Twitter

Bully pulpit, make way for the bully hashtag.

In his latest social media push to get support for his fiscal cliff plan, President Barack Obama participated in a brief Twitter question-and-answer session, alternately defending his position on taxes and addressing concerns over losing favorite tax deductions in the course of fiscal cliff negotiations.

Among the thousands of submissions using the keyword, or hashtag, “My2K” (the amount the administration says most people would have to pay if their Bush-era tax cuts expired), the president picked eight tweets, most of which seemed chosen to reinforce a key part of his plan.

“What is your opposition to taking away deductions for the 2% rather than up the rate? Seems like a reasonable compromise,” user @huntertred tweeted referring to Republicans offer to close loopholes instead of raising rates, as opposed to the White House’s plan to do both, while keeping some of the most popular and wide-ranging deductions intact.

“@huntertred not enough revenue, unless you end charitable deductions, etc. less revenue=more cuts in education etc,” Obama responded, linking to a blog post from his top economic advisers titled, “Limiting Tax Deductions: The Reality of the Math.”

The president, tweeting at the official @WhiteHouse handle, also warned about threats to some of those popular tax cuts, including the mortgage interest deduction,  that he said might meet the chopping block if Republicans held the line on keeping tax rates low for the wealthiest.

“Breaks for middle class impt for families & econ. if top rates don't go up, danger that middle class deductions get hit,” the president warned @soitgoesem.

He also told @pmmckenzie that any reforms to social programs like Medicare and Medicaid would not affect those who most needed financial help.

“We can reduce deficit in balanced way by ending tax cuts for top 2% + reforms that strengthen safety net & invest in future,” he responded to the question, which asked for assurance that entitlement reform would not hurt the neediest.

While the president did answer eight questions, he really answered seven on the fiscal cliff, as the last one veered off topic to which Chicago sports team would “win it all” first.

“.@Mica4Lifeda bears still gotta shot, despite sad loss this weekend! plus rose will return for playoffs!!! -bo” came the response.

Obama is a Chicago and Illinois Democrat: Illinois is the third worst run state in the union based on fiscal competence. Chicago is the most politically corrupt city in the nation according to the Univ of Illinois. Is there some reason to believe Obama? He has the credentials of a Chicago Drug Gang leader.

Appropriate for Obama and liberals to tweet, since they are all twits. Social media to spew propaganda, and for Obama to whine. The only reason Dems want Repubs to be "on board", is so when increase taxes and no real cuts fails to reduce deficit.....Dems can say " don't just blame us, they voted for it too"!

Someone needs to inform Mr. Obama that WE are NOT the ones who are going to vote on HIS plan. He should be taking his message to the House and the Senate they are the ones who will be voting on it. Geezzz...ALL he knows how to do is campaign. Oh well, four more years of NOTHING. Off the cliff we go...

Haven't people learned that in life you have to give and take. It is really sad that we have a president that has no experience or knowledge in handling negotiations. Obama needs to get up from off his arse and start bargaining with Congress. It is not just the GOP but both parties have to work together for the American citizens sake. Both have to give to receive. This is truly old news and very unprofessional. I have never in my life seen such a bunch of idiots not knowing what they are doing. They all need to be fired and put some professional business people into congress and get this country moving in the right direction. These lawyers in congress are a bunch of children. We need a massive firing and rehiring like we do in the private sector. If you don't do the job we get people in your place that can. Government is run very poorly, inefficiently and non productive in all agencies. No one should go on vacation until the country is taken care of!!

The problem here that I see now, is Barry is working with his people on going around the 14th Amendment, to run for a 3rd term like Chavez and other Socialist Presidents or Dictators have done in other countries. They have circumvented their governments laws and regulations to become lifetime Presidents or Dictators. That is the big problem keeping Barry busy now that he has the next 4 years covered. If he knew what he was doing he would be in the Congress kicking butt like Clinton and Reagan and other past Presidents have done to get things accomplished. Barry has NO balls!!

About 8 to 12% of the people use Twitter. The president needs to stop playing like he is a teenager gaming nerd and get to work. If he wants to "take it to the people" then do it using media the majority uses, not by being a twitter twit.

The President does not like and is unwilling to negotiate with people who don't already agree with him. Leadership has it's downside and Obama won't engage. Twitter is perfect for him.

The twit should get to the table and negotiate he did not win big and he is president of 100% of the people like it or not. Cut spending , fix the tax code and restructure entitlements and raise some revenue but it cannot be all one way.

Again another ignorant liberal placing blame on the GOP. It is the Presidents fault at this point . He needs to get some brass and honor his position as LEADER and DEMAND BOTH PARTIES STOP this going back and forth and find a happy medium. It is both Boehner and Reid's fault as leaders of their so called houses. They need to have Obama give both of them a little kick in their arse and think about the American people. So this blaming by the liberals is a bunch of ignorant irresponsibility! All the politicians are at fault!!!

What is there to work out? A plan was put together a year ago to cut some government programs, mostly military, in order to get an agreement on raising the debt ceiling. Why does anyone care about the debt ceiling when we have a President who has ignored it completely for the last four years and now proposes that he be allowed to raise the debt ceiling whenever he feels like it. The real story is that He has no intention of cutting government spending at all. He wants all of his programs fully funded regardless of whether he has any money to pay for them. That is the mantra of the Democratic party. His plan is to continue to borrow money anywhere he can find it to pay for whatever he wants. There are no limits. He thinks that is what the American people want. So, that being the case, if I was the Republicans, I would just say there will be no deal. Increase all the taxes on everyone. Thats what he really wants. But even if we get 50% tax rates on everyone, poor to rich, we will not solve the debt problem as long as there are no cuts to entitlement programs. If we froze all government spending at current levels and raised taxes across the board, we might get close to paying off the debt in 15-20 years.
