Why not John McCain for defense secretary?
Because he's a lunatic.
I dont think he is a lunatic, and as he served in the armed forces, he may be a good selection, as would John Kerry
I think Kerry would also make a good choice for Sec. of State when Hillary leaves.
If I were President Obama, I would even ask Colin Powell if he had any interest in Sec of Defense.
Whether McCain is or is not a lunatic, he would definitely be a loose cannon as Secretary of Defense. No president would want him in that role.

Give Susan Rice Sec. of State and Chuck Hagel Sec. of Defense. Colin Powell as CIA Director. This would be a great Cabinet!! Independent voters would love these picks!!
I dont know about Susan Rice as I dont know much about her except for the recent Benghazi stuff, so I wont comment either way on her.
If not her, then John Kerry as I said earlier. The other two that you mention would be good in my opinion.
John "bomb, bomb, bomb......bomb, bomb Iran" McCain has as much chance of being nominated (by POTUS) for Sec. of Defense as Mitch McConnell had to be nominated as his campaign manager.
It's safe to say McCain (& possibly Graham) have no more bridges left to burn.
