HATFIELD, Pa. -- President Obama today continued his efforts to push Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for income below $250,000 with a visit to a toy factory here in suburban Philadelphia.
"We talked about this a lot... We had debates about it. There were a lot of TV commercials about it," Obama said. “At the end of the day, a clear majority of Americans -- Democrats, Republicans, independents -- they agreed with a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making sure that middle-class taxes don't go up.”

The non-partisan Tax Policy Center says if these tax cuts expire at the end of the year -- as they are set to do -- about 90% of Americans would paid more in taxes and middle-income families would see their taxes rise by about $2,000.
Obama didn’t present any new ideas in his first speech since House Republicans rejected Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s proposal that he presented in meetings with congressional leadership yesterday. That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.
But Obama did couch his frustration with Congress in humor.
“I've been keeping my own naughty and nice lists for Washington," he said at a Rodon Group plant that makes the popular K'nex brand of toys. "So you should keep your eye on who gets K'NEX this year. There are going to be some members of Congress who get them, and some who don't."

Even the seriousness of the country’s fiscal health couldn’t keep the president from joking about his affable vice president.
Talking about the colorful toys in the factory, Obama said, “Joe Biden was in Costco. He wanted to buy some of this stuff. But I told him he had too much work to do. I wasn't going to have him building roller coasters all day long.”

I am tired of keeping up millions of able bodied people who are capable of working. Get rid of this sort of entitlement and half the problem is solved.
To whom are you referring? Those on Social Security? The poor? Would you rather prople starved? What next? Are you going to come out with "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" Those of us in the middle and working classes have been paying the freight for the idle rich long enough. Are you including THEM as able-bodied people capable of working, or only the poor?
The "poor" are only poor in America. Go to a developing country in Africa and complain about how "poor" workers in America are. Tell them how "poor" you are if you make minimum wage in America when they make less than a dollar a day and somehow manage to survive. Minimum wage is enough to survive on, but most Americans are spoiled and fail to realize that electricity, phone service, and internet are luxuries, not survival needs and you can live without them.
And yes, many on Social Security are able to work or would be able too if they had made better choices. People have been brainwashed too believe that once you hit 65 you automatically become disabled. What they don't realize is that if you eat healthy and exercise, don't smoke, etc, you can function past 65.
And do you have an example of the working class paying the freight for the idle rich?

Tim Geithner is playing the straight guy to our cartoon character President Obama. The Republicans in Congress were right to laugh at him. This is right out of a comic strip.
The President should be down negotiating with Congress to get this done. Not sending Geithner. I see now what was discussed over lunch yesterday. BHO was asking Romney what a balance sheet is.
Geithner is so incompetent and so unrealistic i am embarrassed for this administration. People need to see Geithner's work history to see how shady and silly he is. we had considered investing in his Emerald Fund here in the NW. It required a minimum of $100,000 and it was a fund that focused on bio and tech industries. Almost all of the fund produced NOTHING because the companies were artificially propped up and inflated to seem more successful than they really were. Smoke and mirrors seems to be also used to try and fool regular folks now too.
I beg to differ..............in just about everything you wrote. There are far more things at hand than just the fictitious "Dooms Day Cliff" which is and was a creation of the Republican Party's to force the Democrats to a duel in the name of extending the (then) Unemployment benefits and raising the debt ceiling so that those on food stamps, SS, and Medicare wouldn't fall off the cliff(then).
You have just about everything wrong and would make Carlson at Fox, look as smart as Sarah Palin if only for your presence....................................our country is heading to the greatest Bull Market in 30-years and with Demand principles, a return to manufacturing and a stimulus again to bring infrastructure jobs to the forefront (two years late--Republicans) and now you want to destroy what is clearly a "Recovery"?
Tax reform and a tax surcharge on all corporations over 10-million in Gross Sales, (5%) plus a moderate increase in Capital Gains taxes with a $1.00 per-gallon tax increase on gasoline, would get us there without placing the country into a tail spin. Why? Because corporations are sitting on 2-trillion in cash and thus a small 5% tax levied now, before profits and expenses can be forward estimated, would allow the CEOs to absorb the tax without losing face or risking fiduciary malfesence by shareholders. The 5% could be written down each year until the deficits are deminished enough to eventually drop all taxes to 15% across the board on corporations and 10% on all Individuals as a standard--elliminate the entire Tax Code system and move Health Care Reforms to Social Security and let it oversee and manage Medicare for everyone! This would re-fund Social Security in lieu of the Baby Boomer bubble. Modest penalties could be assessed on those who smoke, do drugs and abuse alcohol, to offset the added costs associated with obesity as a cause of lifestyle choices. In other words............................caddilac policies could still be purchased by the Rich or anyone who wishes to opt out of the State Health Care system. But for may of the Poor and struggling MIddle Class, free health care, by a State sponsored system as part of Social Security could help people immensely with the costs of the current system that has NO price regulatory processes. In DeFacto or DeJure Monopolies, cost containment is the key to making it work. So far, the Health Care Reforms mandate the coverage but do NOT prevent industry collusion or gouging or price ceiling caps.

I've seen lots of yapping on raising taxes on the rich, cutting out loopholes, neither of which seems like such a bad idea. But, I want to see MORE people included in the tax roles, and I want to see some spending cuts.
The President should be in DC! The campaign is over, no one is running for office right now, he should be on Capitol Hill negotiating the heck out of this. Taxes aren't going to solve this alone.....we need spending cuts!
Someone could start a new game show and call it" who want`s to be debt free."Then start enrolling members; of people who want to be debt free! each member would agree to pay 20 dollars each month, or another sum to become eligible for being chosen for the prize each month! If two million people were in the membership, they would be able to raise forty million dollars each month! Then calculate, how many could become debt free and pick them by a lottery drawing! If 800 people won they could be required to pay a calculated amount each month say a hundred dollars to be applied to other people to become debt free. Or something like this with a better plan to do it and make it work better! until all the members were debt free! It would help the economy to! They could even play it on line with as many that would want to play!

I would urge talks with Russia and China and move to remove Assad from Syria before Turkey is attacked--the internet and lights go dark before the attack brings Iran and Israel to exchange weapons in which the iron dome will NOT stand against a barrage of missiles from all sides!!! I think congress is giving Obama a hard time because he is not American, he has lied far to often and they do not want to make this country a place for the terrorist to move in, so in short it is every person's fault for helping that Muslim terrorist to stay in office.

It's not a cliff. It's a fiscal bunny slope. Eventually, there will be problems, but we can enter January without a deal, and the sequestration and 1990s taxes will not cause any immediate trouble.

I remember just before Obama was elected the first time tht he promised transparency and he would be open to all ideas. Then after he was elected, he just told Reed and Pelosi to go for it while he and Michele picked out draperies and paint colors for the White House. No Republican input, just my way as I ahve a super majority. Same pattern all over again....instead of leading he is campaigning which he is about the only thing he seems to be good at. Even though I am a Republican, I had alot of faith he would do the right thing. We have a spending problem right now in this country and raising taxes on the 2% is not going to solve our biggest problem. Best thing is to let all tax cuts expire and cut spending across the board. A little pain now, but at least we will reduce the deficit.
This president needs to quit focusing on half pennies and concentrate on the real problem-the need for drastic spending cuts. This is pandering to public ignorance and obama knows it. Obama is absolutely not interested in avoiding the fiscal cliff. He is using the cliff to attempt to expand his powers. He wants us to give him an unlimited number of blank checks so he can run this country into the ground. Stupedaso, I have been a small business owner for 40 years and I have 43 full time employees but I am not going to comment how Obamanomics or Obamacare will effect my business. I am going to make a management comment. When I have some employees who are not getting along (like those in Congress) and their antics are effecting my business (like the management of the country) I do not go to the other employees and ask them to solve the problem by talking to those employees who are bickering. As the boss (POTUS in this case) I sit down and work out the issues with those who are causing the problem. THAT'S PART OF MY JOB. What the POTUS is doing right now is attempting to inflame the masses. He's looking for someone or something else to blame failure on. Once again he takes no responsibility for his actions.

to all of you who are crying that I am a fox news crony. I got my information on this subject from MSNBC. Not fox news. We have a President who is asking Congress to give up it's powers of checks and balances by allowing the President to increase the debt ceiling at will and on his own. This goes against everything that our system of gov't was designed to protect against. If congress gave in to this then we would never have to pass another budget ever again. The President could rule by decree on all economic issues. For instance, he could extend unemployment benefits for 200 weeks and nobody could stop him. Obama has already used his Presidential decrees to do an end around congress on many issues(think dream act and political appointments). He must be stopped. He is not the boss. The President is but 1 of the three branches of gov't. Each branch is allotted certain powers in order to keep any one person or small group of people from being able to turn our Republic into a dictatorship.

No, I think he made it pretty clear he wants 1.7 trillion in new debt and taxes, 60 billion stimulus for a bunch of solar panel companies who will go out of business that his campaign fundraisers and Dem Congresspeople are invested in, 400 billion in cuts to medicare from all those grandmas he said the Republicans were going to push off a cliff because they wanted to cut the waste and make it more efficient, and best of all, total control over future debt borrowing. I didn't see much at all about the middle class. Look at your kids who I imagine you want to be successful in life. Taxes on the wealthy is worth only 8 days of deficit spending. the Obama administration certainly is not interested in only 8 days worth. Instead, for power play, Obama wants to divide and break down the GOP so the elections of 2010 will never happen again. So, you see, Obama is gambling and playing with our jobs and livelihoods.
Obama is forcing a decision of whether to go off the cliff or not. GOP can stand strong against this and realize that if we do go over the cliff, it's Obama's fault, not the GOP's fault.
This economy/budge/deficit squarely belongs to the President. It's Obama's responsibility to come up with a budget, with spending cuts, to woo all the votes he can. Obama is to go to all the Senators and Congressmen, it's not for them to go to Obama. He's to bring them in and work to fix our economic problems.

Those of us financially secure will make it through another recession started by the drive off the fiscal cliff. To millions who are not financially secure it will be a much harder bigger deal. To those who need welfare and/or food stamps you may find out they will not be available forever. To those of you laid off by big/small business you'll be competing for food stamps/unemployment and welfare maybe. Plus we'll all be paying more for medical care regardless of the F cliff so for you viners that say let's just drive ... this is what you're proposing.

President Obama has a mandate, since he won largely on his economic policies. House Republicans refuse to compromise. Therefore, it is completely appropriate for the President to take his proposals to the American people, and encourage us to call our representatives. They work for us, not the other way around.
George W. Bush did the exact same thing, as has every other President. Unless you think we the people are supposed to keep quiet while government does what it wants.

If Obama is serious about avoiding the 'fiscal cliff' why is he adding the clause removing congress from approving the debt ceiling? These are two seperate issues. A lot of people accuse the GOP of obstruction but avoid addressing what Obama is doing here.

What we're witnessing in these bargaining sessions by the Republicans is nothing more than the same kind of cynical foot dragging maneuvers they carried on continuously throughout his first term, this time one now designed to push the President into the untenable position of accepting a tax increase on those making under 250K, just one more way for these Congressional Republicans, all of them bought and paid for minions of corporate wealth, to paint him as being the worst kind of liar!
Don't anyone kid themselves, this is not just a case of these guys being dense; they get it only too well, knowing this to be one of the most sacrosanct promises made by the President during his campaign for reelection, the promise those making less than this amount would not see their taxes raised.

Wow- That is the weirdest stretch of rationalization I have yet read. regular folks were already going to see big tax increases based on Obama's plans. payroll tax, death tax, no mortgage deductions, HUGE insurance taxes now, and it keeps going. The average family will be paying anywhere from 2000$-14,000$ in extra taxes WITHOUT a raise in income tax. Pile that on and middle class will no longer exist.
The Democrats couldn't even pass his plans when they had the majority in 2008 so obviously the problem lies with Obama's thinking and planning and not with the Republicans otherwise he would have had everything he wants now back then.

That's fine by me, let's return to Clinton Era tax rates for the top 2% and leave the Bush Era cuts in place for everyone else, but first let's have a return to Clinton Era spending levels for all areas of the federal budget. Since we still have those two nasty wars to pay for, one of which is still ongoing and the other still requires some attention, let's keep the military spending at the 2012 level. To further the changes we can believe in, let's roll back the tax loopholes for corporations and those nasty 2% to Reagan Era levels.
You see Mark, it isn't that we don't like Obama, we don't like the looting of the treasury that is happening by a select few insiders. No federal politician wants to be first to stop the looting because they are doing it too. Don't believe me? Why is it that only millionaires can afford to run for office, and if they weren't when they entered office, why are they millionaires or even richer when they leave?
