Obama presses Congress to extend middle-class tax cuts

If Congress can't agree on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, the president said taxes will rise by about $2,000 for the average family. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

HATFIELD, Pa. --  President Obama today continued his efforts to push Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for income below $250,000 with a visit to a toy factory here in suburban Philadelphia.

"We talked about this a lot... We had debates about it. There were a lot of TV commercials about it," Obama said. “At the end of the day, a clear majority of Americans -- Democrats, Republicans, independents -- they agreed with a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making sure that middle-class taxes don't go up.”

The non-partisan Tax Policy Center says if these tax cuts expire at the end of the year -- as they are set to do -- about 90% of Americans would paid more in taxes and middle-income families would see their taxes rise by about $2,000.

Obama didn’t present any new ideas in his first speech since House Republicans rejected Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s proposal that he presented in meetings with congressional leadership yesterday. That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.

But Obama did couch his frustration with Congress in humor.

“I've been keeping my own naughty and nice lists for Washington," he said at a Rodon Group plant that makes the popular K'nex brand of toys. "So you should keep your eye on who gets K'NEX this year. There are going to be some members of Congress who get them, and some who don't."

President Barack Obama looks over a rollercoaster with K'NEX Inventor Joel Glickman, left, and Rodon Group President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Araten, right, during a tour of the company in Hatfield, Pa. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Even the seriousness of the country’s fiscal health couldn’t keep the president from joking about his affable vice president.

Talking about the colorful toys in the factory, Obama said, “Joe Biden was in Costco. He wanted to buy some of this stuff. But I told him he had too much work to do. I wasn't going to have him building roller coasters all day long.”

Evidently the Republicans in Congress, and especially in the House of Representatives, have learned nothing from their massive defeat in November -- they have gone straight back to the irresponsible, unpatriotic obstructionism the voters punished them for in November.

Damaging as their behavior is in the short run, perhaps in the perspective of two to four years ahead, it will turn out for the best. In 2014 and 2016 the coalition that defeated Willard "Mitt" Romney and Lyin' Ryan, mouthpieces for the worst of America's billionaires, like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch Brothers, will be stronger still; and even many of the ignorant old white men who represented most of the votes for Romney and Ryan will have learned from experience that Democrats like President Obama and Elizabeth Warren are not, in fact ogres, whatever hate propaganda from "Fox" and "Limbaugh" claims. Indeed, many of the ignorant old white men may well have seen how the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a "Obamacare") benefits their families: some of them they may even have figured out that it's the Democratic Party, not the Republican party, that's looking out for their best interests.

All this is likely to mean that in 2014, or in 2016 at the latest, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives will be swept away, and the Republican Party in its present form will become a thing of the past.

    gw - it was 58 million that thought a 20% reduction in the government's income with a 2 trillion dollar increase in expenses would reduce the national debt. You can understand why the republicans want to cut funding for education.

    BTW - how do you feel about Bush spending a couple trillion dollars of your grand kids money to kill Saddam? I know he wasn't a nice person but don't you think that was excessive?

    And about all this spending BS you keep talking about, the numbers are on the Internet. The increase in government spending for Obama is lower than any of the past 6 presidents. Maybe some kids in your neighborhood can teach you how to use the Internet to get some real facts. Fox is lying to you.

                  The "Middle Class" does not need tax cuts and it is greed on their part to refuse to share in the burden they assign to the Rich.

                  Both spending and revenues must be increased to help the poor.

                    Taxation is theft.

                          The middle class is dissapearing so it makes perfect sense to extend the tax cuts for people who need the extra money. Without a strong middle class the economy will shrivel up and die. What part of that is so hard to understand. The wealthiest Americans who have been benefiting form low tax rates and loopholes should be taxed more accordingly. They have been getting away with murder and should be called on it. Simple math

                            What is needed is an effective 85% flat tax rate with zero deductions. President Obama was correct when he "said you didn't build this" and it is equally applicable to all the university grads who attended class on their parents and/or grandparents money which was stolen from the sweat of others.

                            Just as the owners of businesses have profited from the sweat of others so has most (not all) of the "Middle Class".

                            Neither the sweat of your brow nor the fruits of your labors belong to you. They belong to the People. To claim otherwise is to side with the 2%.

Think that the President is a "Political Joke," and is an "Economic Hack." He made it very clear that the GOP only political and economic goal is too destroy the President at all costs. On Janruary 20, 2009. At the "Tea Begger Caucus Conspiracy." Which was lead by "Richie Rich Ryan," and his poltical cohort in economic crime "Crazy Cantor." On this evening at the Caucus Steakhouse Restaurant in Washington D.C. The "Tea Begger Conspirators" took their "Blood Oath" to destroy the US Economy, and the American People. This means taking the US Economy over the 'fiscal cliff!' It was made clear by "Nutty Newt." That the economic and political 'seeds' of 'treason' were planted tonight for 2012. He admitted this clearly on the Tom Hartman Show, and then "Nutty Newt" tried to down play it by using the examples of US Political History. What a joke America! "Bonehead Boehner" has never taken the President seriously, and he never seriosly took the President's Eocnomic Policies as practical. What is interesting about this whole situation. Is that President Reagan would be on the economic side of President Obama. That is fact!

                                    Everybody wants to help the middle class. Obama and Congress do want to help the middle class, but Obama will not compromise. He wants to tax the wealthy to no end. So how is it that someone making $250,000.00 is wealthy? Why not start at $1 million instead. A lot of small businesses do make 250K, and that's hardly making ends meet. It is very clear that this President did not pass economics while in college. Why hasn't this President passed a budget since he was elected the first time around? The Democrats love raising taxes on everyone. They need to raise taxes for their spending money on failed programs. They do not like people being successful. They want to spread the wealth to those that do not like to work but like to live off those that do their jobs and are responsible. But really, do you think any politician wants to help the American people? No, not really. Government has gotten way out of control and wants to take control of everybody. Some of these politicians are dinosaurs. They have been on DC far too long and should be replaced every 6 years. Being in DC for 20 to 35 years is way too long. They have become ineffective and useless. We The People do not need some radical politician running this country or our lives. But, unfortunately that's what we have now. Their using scare tactics to get everyone worked up. Why is the President out campaigning again? He is incapable of making any good decisions to help this country. He does the only thing that he is good at, campaigning. Lots of hot air. Now you know know where global warming comes from, politicians. Think about it. Why are we in this mess? It's because of the politicians and it's not just one party of politicians, it's all of them. So blame them all and start at the top. None of them are exempt from blame.

                                      What Progressive Power does support is a raise to the Capital Gains Tax up to 39% immediately. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are off the table. The Medicare and Medicaid Programs are too critical to those citizens that are medically vulnerable. Questions of hunanity need to be carefully answered. When discussing Medicare and Medicaid. "Mickey Mouse Mitch McConnell" just loves to laugh at individuals that are unable to defend themselves right now. Like our brave injured military veterans. The "Brainless Bush Tax Cuts for the top 1% must expire right away. All Corporate Tax Loop holes that send US Jobs to nations like China and India must be closed right away. This would be a good starter. The GOP/Tea Beggers need to do less laughing and more serious and fair negociations. Progressive Power is reluctant to put to much forward yet because, the Tea Beggers are still so far 'gone' mentally.

                                        Mr. Geithner delivered an offer of a "fair & balanced" proposal. On the revenue side, federal income tax rates will rise on the wealthy, capital gains, and dividends. (Higher rates on dd's are bad for retirees seeking a safe stream of income as the Obama administration's monetary policy has interest rates so low.)

                                        The proposal is to increase tax revenue $1.6T over 10 years, or $160B per year. The proposal also includes extending the Payroll Tax Holiday, which LOSES $100-110B per year.

                                        So as it stands, President Obama is risking tax raises for everyone to hold out for a $50-60B increase in revenue and a spending cut of .85%.

                                        Really?

                                                        It's just political theater. Don't take any of it too seriously. A deal will be cut at some point. The GOP can shout and Obama can shout back, but, in the end, the fiscal cliff will force them to make a deal. At worst, we will go back to a Clinton-era tax structure and get some spending cuts as well. The protagonists will play to their respective bases until the last moment, and then announce a deal.

                                                              Lets get real, the problems of today are the result are inevitable and just a repeat of the fall ofevery Republic in history ... dispite the checks and balances put in place to prevent the very situation of today.

                                                              Every civilization in histort has only succeeded with the small number of wealthy, a small number of poor that will always exist, and a massive niddle-class. Post-clinton "new economy" the Republic is a small number of wealthy, a very small almost extinct middle-class and a massive growing poor (displaced midle-class and the always present small number of those who can not or will not work). When 2/3s of the deficit is from mandatory federal spending social welfare programs what is the logical thing to do? When 25% of the population is paying over 87% of the bills how much more can you steal? When the lowers 75% of the workforce is paying less than 12% of all tax revenue, not their fault a "new economy" destroyed their future, just how do you expect to increase tax and make a sustainable economy. It is time for YOUR representative put the citizens of the Republic first ... not be a candidate for future U.N. post, but as an advocate for YOU and your childrens future and the Republics very existence.

                                                              "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury." - Alexander Tyler

                                                              "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." -- Dr. Adrian P. Rogers

                                                              "A culture of entitlement without responsibility is not just a consequence of the welfare state, it is pretty much the objective of the welfare state." Perry De Haviland

                                                              "Anything other than free enterprise always means a society of compulsion and lower living standards, and any form of socialism strictly enforced means dictatorship and the totalarian state. That this statement is still widely disputed only illustrates the degree to which malignant fantasy can capture the imagination of intellectuals." Lew Rockwell

                                                              "The right to be let alone is indeed the beginning of all freedom." -- Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas

                                                              "If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare… The powers of Congress would subvert the very foundation, the very nature of the limited government established by the people of America". Alexander Hamilton

                                                              "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

                                                              From bondage to spiritual faith;
                                                              From spiritual faith to great courage;
                                                              From courage to liberty;
                                                              From liberty to abundance;
                                                              From abundance to selfishness;
                                                              From selfishness to complacency;
                                                              From complacency to apathy;
                                                              From apathy to dependence;
                                                              From dependence back into bondage" Alexander Tyler

                                                              Do some research people. let the people you put in a position to represent YOUR interests and your childrens interests that you are no longer little children to be bought with a free lunch, you want real tangible change that is constructive and does not destroy your childrens future. Think about why the founders of this Republic put everything on the line so you could not be subjected to what is happening today and why,despite their sacrifices we are just repeating the very same mistakes of every form of Democracy in recorded history.

                                                                  (1) It might look like some kind of "victory for Obama, which they are anxious to prevent.

According to the UCSB site, "Who Rules America," the upper 20% of us own 96% of the country's wealth after taxes. The rest of us share the remaining 4%.

                                                                  The disparity between rich and poor has been increasing since 1979. It's easily Googled.

                                                                  The very rich aren't all "job creators", at least not in America. For the most part they buy bonds and live off the dividends, or they buy stocks (or short sell them) and live off the capital gains and interest. Those taxes are capped at 15%.

                                                                  How many of us who hate Obama and everything he stands for live off dividends and take advantage of tax shelters designed specifically for us?

It is what you do with your income is what creates "WEALTH". So much of America is subsidized with welfare by the government that incentive has been killed making growth impossible because people do not work and high taxes drag down growth in the economy. Obama's plan to do this involves giving Tim the power to raise the debt Ceiling at will without congress? Never going to happen.

Using the formula above...is 7 years 2 months and 12 days to pay off the debt giving every cent every American earns up to $50,000.00 a year.. Um I only make 26,000 a year so it will take me 14 years 4 months and 24 days to pay the principal. This does not include interest!

It keeps in place what REPUBLICANS did for the middle class. The increased taxes on the so called "rich" will do nothing to decrease debt. Only cutting the gigantic welfare State of Medicaid, unemployment benefits, food stamps, housing subsidies, education spending and school lunch programs and SSI ( all of which are at least 1 trillion a year and growing) will balance the budget and start creating jobs. That is the dirty secret. The problem is not Social Security or Medicare. It is true welfare. People receiving "STUFF" that is paid for by taxpayers. That is what is not fair. We the producers having to support the Takers. It is also unConstitutional.

He is trying to give Tim G the power to raise the debt ceiling WITHOUT congresses approval. Now lets see...um who has to pass this...CONGRESS. So congress would loose power by voting for this? Its like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Sounds good eh? Its like Obama signing and executive order giving the Speaker of the House power to Veto.

No government should tell me what to do with it. How about we end the IRS and end taxes, and we the people can put that money back into the economy.
