Obama presses Congress to extend middle-class tax cuts

If Congress can't agree on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, the president said taxes will rise by about $2,000 for the average family. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

HATFIELD, Pa. --  President Obama today continued his efforts to push Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for income below $250,000 with a visit to a toy factory here in suburban Philadelphia.

"We talked about this a lot... We had debates about it. There were a lot of TV commercials about it," Obama said. “At the end of the day, a clear majority of Americans -- Democrats, Republicans, independents -- they agreed with a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making sure that middle-class taxes don't go up.”

Recommended: White House 'surprised' by GOP 'surprise'

The non-partisan Tax Policy Center says if these tax cuts expire at the end of the year -- as they are set to do -- about 90% of Americans would paid more in taxes and middle-income families would see their taxes rise by about $2,000.

Obama didn’t present any new ideas in his first speech since House Republicans rejected Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s proposal that he presented in meetings with congressional leadership yesterday. That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.

But Obama did couch his frustration with Congress in humor.

“I've been keeping my own naughty and nice lists for Washington," he said at a Rodon Group plant that makes the popular K'nex brand of toys. "So you should keep your eye on who gets K'NEX this year. There are going to be some members of Congress who get them, and some who don't."

President Barack Obama looks over a rollercoaster with K'NEX Inventor Joel Glickman, left, and Rodon Group President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Araten, right, during a tour of the company in Hatfield, Pa. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Even the seriousness of the country’s fiscal health couldn’t keep the president from joking about his affable vice president.

Talking about the colorful toys in the factory, Obama said, “Joe Biden was in Costco. He wanted to buy some of this stuff. But I told him he had too much work to do. I wasn't going to have him building roller coasters all day long.”

On the specific subject of the Bush era tax cuts, the math is simple.

The more-than 97% less-fortunate of us will continue to receive this tax break.

Those less-than 3% of us that earn more than $200K-a-year ($250K jointly) will have their tax-code reverted back to what it was before Bush cut them.

As math is simple, it's also undeniable.

It begs to question: who are the MORONS from the 97% of us that would oppose this proposal?

Hate to change the subject, but just for a minute or so, here's some info for those willing to "fight the good fight":

Rice, rumored to be on the short list to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, owns between $300,000 and $600,000 in TransCanada Corp. stock, according to the TheHill.com, which cites Rice's financial disclosure forms. TransCanada is the company whose 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring oil from Canada down to Gulf refineries has been repeatedly delayed and now is in regulatory limbo.

I guess that means the "Rat Eared Wonder Boy" better quickly pass the XL Pipeline deal.

What will going over the cliff mean to the top of the middle class? $166 per month or $2000 a year. Who does it hurt the most? The rich.

I'm tired of the closed door meetings and back room deals. Let's go over the "cliff" and get back to public debates. Do we really need to increase taxes by 1.6 trillion dollars? Where is this money going? To build a bigger government and more beaurocrats? The people just voted for bigger government. It is time to fund it.

        Reply#524 - Sat Dec 1, 2012 12:58 PM EST

So with the $166 a month or $2000 a year,is not going to hurt the lower income folks....well tend to disagree...especially those who have to work 2 or 3 jobs to get by....then in Jan 2013 good ole Obamacare kicks in...and there are over 18 new taxes in that plus his tax,,,sorry his FINE...and the good ole IRS will collect those FINES...hope everyone who voted for Obamanation loves what's coming...and no he has not detailed where he would make his $400B i.e. which agency or program etc....sounds like he is looking to play the blame game again.....that is real leadership...

So it seems to some here that Obama is the only one working? It is sad to know that the master illusionists is still able to pull the wool over the eyes of the American sheep that voted for him. It seems that he is the only one working because he wants you to think that! Obama is playing the same games with the American people that he was playing before and will continue to play for the next four years.

How easy it must be for some peple out there to forget that it was on Obama's watch that for the first time in history this country's credit rating was downgraded costing the tax payer's billions of dollars in increased interest rates. Does anyone out there even find it the least bit strange that Obama would be forcing his "green energy policies" on us at a time when we still have plenty of fossil fuels left, and when the technology is still not quite ready for use to switch to the so called green energy fuels and all this while giving money to green energy companies who go bankrupt a few months later after receiving hundreds of billions of our tax dollars? Of course all Obama has to do to justify all this is smile and say something like he didn't know that would happen and that makes it some how justified?

Obama's commitment (or in reality lack of commitment) was clearly conveyed by the Treasury Secretary in his joke of a proposal to congress to allegedly trim the debt. Anyone with half a brain could see that his proposal spent far more that it cut and that is exactly why members of congress laughed at him. Yet for some reason when Obama said it was all the Republicans in congress fault and that they were not being serious about avoiding the so called financial cliff, the fools out there believed him. With great minds like this doing the majority of the voting is it any wonder that this country is headed to the bottom fast!

Obama will continue to do things like saying he is serious about creating jobs and then turn around and refuse to support anything that actually will create real jobs. The Keystone Pipeline is prime example of this folks. Obamacare will kill many small businesses and the jobs associated with them. Many more will be forced to cut their work force to avoid being indirectly taxed to death by Obamacare and yet all the American people can see is what they think of as "FREE HEALTH CARE!" Fools! NOTHING is free and someone pays for it in one way or another. The nation's poverty rate has risen under Obama's watchful eye and yet for some reason we fail to see the root of the problem. Obama originally promised us CHANGE. What he did not say is if the CHANGE he promised would be the downfall of this country in the long run or not.

Remember the old story about the frog and the boiling pot of water. Put a frog in a boiling pot of water and it will simply jump out. However put a frog in a pot of water and slowly increase the temperature to the boiling point and the frog will simply sit there and die! Folks we are the frogs and Obama is the cook and is slowly increasing the temperature of the water he has us in and far to many out there don't even realize this is happening! Even the members of congress (for the most part) do not realize that they are helping Obama to this end!

In order to cut the deficit you have to do both - raise taxes and cut spending. Raise taxes on the people who put 90% of what they earn in savings - the top 1-2%. Then, at the same time reform social programs via advancements in technology that would make the process part of the programs much more cost effective. Also, and this is the most important thing - cut the number of engagements the military is involved in via contractors globally - there are many conflicts currently being fought not by active duty soldiers but military contractors which are essentially for profit troops that pursue the riskiest of missions - but get paid substantially better (both the workers and the for profit company under contract with the military).

People are right. Cuts are a part of the solution - but so is raising taxes on the top 1-2%. It takes both components; not one.

Going over the cliff accomplishes both. The biggest cut, going over the cliff, is to defense.

defense is paying far more checks to american workers than any single item on the agenda, the only problem now is the wars we are involved in are taking tax money because the people running it are not soldiers they are politicians, go in do the job no restrictions like desert storm was run and its over in no time... be politically correct and you end up the way we are now bogged down for ever in a hapless war we can't win....

The Republican proposals for dealing with the debt and stimulating the economy/spurring job growth are of a time proven successful methodology. The Democrats position is both politically and ideologically driven. Worse, their proposals, if implimented, will have nearly the exact opposite effect than that of the stated goal of debt reduction.

Actually the RepubliCON methodology has proven itself to be fruad. Many studies have proven that lowering taxes on the rich does NOT create jobs ... it warehouses money in offshore tax free accounts. In my lifetime Democrats have created TWICE as many jobs a RepubliCON administrations; with four less years in office.

Tickle down, voodoo, Milton Freidman economics have tickled UP wealth, tickled OUT jobs, tikled past the poor and trickled DOWN the middle class.

The whining and posturing is for the benefit of the teabagger base but the president will get higher taxes on the top 25 and republicans will be blamed for defending them. Hopefully the house teabagger republicans will take the country over the fiscal cliff and be voted out in 2014.

In January your taxes will go up as the Bush tax cuts expire and automatic spending cuts of 1 trillion will kick in. 500 million will be from the military and most of it is spent in republican states. In order to help the top 2% the republicans will hit you with at least $2000 more in taxes.

Didn't Obama campaign on the Clinton Era Tax Rates for the rich? That would raise about 800 Billion over 10 years. The Republicans said ok but lets close loopholes and deductions to get that 800 Billion. Then Obama counter offers with 1.6 TRILLION in increased taxes. How is that "compromising"?

                                        Or to use your analogy.

Obama says it costs 800 Billion cash. The Republicans say will you take a check. Obama counters the price is now 1.6 Trillion. Is that meeting in the middle??

If you are a farmer and you and your farmer buddies run out of seeds and have none to plant and then you tell the farmer that has seeds that he is going to have to give part of his seeds to all the farmers pretty soon he too will be out of seeds.

The moral of the story is that if everyone plants seeds and saves then everyone will harvest what they sow and everyone will have seeds for next years crop.

But since Ronald Reagan and trickle down it hasn't worked out that way. The wealthy have gained a larger and larger percent of the total wealth while the middle class has shrunk and the poor have grown.

It seems necessary to say AGAIN (because conservatives omit this part when ranting about the deficit), stimulus spending HAD to be done when the economy was in a free fall 2007-08, into 2009. Or do you guys actually prefer a depression to a deficit?

Eighteen months ago in the debt ceiling debacle, Obama agreed to spending cuts, significant spending cuts, but the GOP would NOT agree to any tax increases whatsoever. And BTW, which party was the one pushing to renege on the sequestration, i.e. the spending cuts essentially across the board? Oh yes, the GOP.

We need to cut spending carefully to avoid another recession and we need to raise taxes on those who can afford it the most, i.e. the wealthy. As the economy gets stronger, we can cut more spending (especially in the military). But I agree with the president, we still need to invest in education and infrastructure to ensure FUTURE growth in a competitive global economy.

                                            Wrong gw

The Democrats DID NOT cause the worst recession in decades in less than 12 months. Name one piece of legislation that brought the recession about...I dare you.

Blaming the short-lived Democratic Congress for the mess Bush and the GOP wrought is the worst excuse you conservatives have, and a total failure of CRITICAL THINKING.

The Boner, Cantor and McConnell laugh at the proposal from Obama and call it ridiculuous and lacking detail, despite dollar amounts on taxes and details of Medicare reform. The Boner says he has "put revenue on the table" that will be gained from "closing loopholes and cutting entitlements", which seems to be VERY far from specific. Hey GOP, there is a reason the entire freeking process is called negotiation. Where the hell is your counter offer? Put up or shut up.

Will love to see Pelosi submit the discharge petition on the senate bill. If she can't get any conservatives to sign on to submit the petition, they still have to go on record as opposing the tax continuation for the 98%. That will be very hard to backtrack from in the 2014 elections, even with gerrymandered districts. Remember, the districts were drawn to the populations of 2010. Demographics have and will continue to change. Stupid does not.

I detest being one of the 53% who work, part of the 53% who give a damn, part of the 53% that contribute, don't demand. Get out of my wallet, stop being a thief in residence. Yea, let Pelosi and Reid suck from the public teat as well, Obummer doesn't get my money or respect.

Agh, but that means running it like a business. Making changes that wont be popular with political supporters. Not likely to happen since Obama will push for a third term.

The funny thig is that there are still retrards out there that will blame any and every failure on Republicans.

The more I read about the Muslim brotherhood and its MO, the more they remind me of the Tea Party and the Republican politicians in bed with them. Just like Morsi is changing the constitution, Republican Governors, far to the right or Ronald Reagan, are drafting legislation to suppress the vote, to redistrict their states to ensure a veto proof majority, blatant intrusion on women's right to contraceptives and abortion, relegating science to the back seat while pushing creationism, banning books at libraries and editing/censoring books not in accord with their views. They even go to elementary and high school book publishers demanding revisions to the books they have produced for decades. They want to rewrite history if you listen to the nuts Palin and Bachmann. They have their own morality brigades in the American Family Council and other evangelical extremist organization. They use hollow excuses like the "War on Christmas" spewed on a daily basis by Fox News propagandists just like the Mullahs. They want to amend the constitution rejecting some amendments and forcing others on us. They march to the drumbeat of war and belligerence just like the Iranian leadership, conjuring lies and fear campaigns to mobilize the masses in their favor. The GOP is watching Chavez smooth and gradual take over Venezuela's power through manipulation of the system and radical changes in the laws, and is learning from it. In several States they try to remove Supreme Court Justices blocking their destructive agendas. Just like Islamists they attack minority groups blaming them for every malady affecting the nation: the gays, the welfare queens, the undocumented workers, the liberal media, Hollywood, union workers, scientists warning us about global warming, even picking on some veterans for demanding too much after they gave it all for us. The Hannitys, O'Reillys, Cheneys, Becks, Limbaughs...all cowards who would run to the nearest cave if they heard a car backfiring....I could go on forever but you get the picture. We must stay vigilant and avoid another 2010 elections who swept these radicals into many positions of influence.

God Bless America and our Commander-in Chief and his lovely family. God knows they have been relentlessly attacked by the tumors who have infected the GOP.

If the 112th Congress does not pass the extension of the middle class payroll, they will have narked themselves for ouster in the 2014 mid-Term elections. American's will remember the actions and inactions of the 112th congress and how the TEA-Republican party worked hard to disenfranchise voters of color. And the 2014 Mid-term is a-coming!

The confrontational, "do nothing," "Not now, not ever" 112th Congress will be directly responsible if we go over the cliff. President Obama won the election decisively. President Barack Obama overwhelming won Hispanic voters, 71% to 27% over GOP candidate Mitt Romney. Let's look at the numbers. On Taxes as 60% would accept taxes to go up on the top-tiered 2%, 65% on an immigration pathway, 93% black voters, Puerto Ricans 83-17 percent margin, Obama won 73 % of the Asian vote! Obama won 71 % of the Hispanic/Latino vote! Obama won 55 % of the women's vote! Obama won 67 % of the youth vote! It wasn't even close!

President Obama seems to have in inherent desire to emulate President Nixon with his enemies list. Previously, a list of those that donate too much to his opponent and now a list of those that don't agree with his increased spending intiiatives.

Spending has been cut under Obama. The only reason the deficits have not skyrocketed is because revenue is down as well because of the Bush depression. But the good news is... Automatic spending cuts are about to kick in and automatic tax increases are about to kick in resulting in huge deficit reduction under president Obama!
