Obama presses Congress to extend middle-class tax cuts

If Congress can't agree on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, the president said taxes will rise by about $2,000 for the average family. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

HATFIELD, Pa. --  President Obama today continued his efforts to push Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for income below $250,000 with a visit to a toy factory here in suburban Philadelphia.

"We talked about this a lot... We had debates about it. There were a lot of TV commercials about it," Obama said. “At the end of the day, a clear majority of Americans -- Democrats, Republicans, independents -- they agreed with a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making sure that middle-class taxes don't go up.”

Recommended: White House 'surprised' by GOP 'surprise'

The non-partisan Tax Policy Center says if these tax cuts expire at the end of the year -- as they are set to do -- about 90% of Americans would paid more in taxes and middle-income families would see their taxes rise by about $2,000.

Obama didn’t present any new ideas in his first speech since House Republicans rejected Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s proposal that he presented in meetings with congressional leadership yesterday. That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.

But Obama did couch his frustration with Congress in humor.

“I've been keeping my own naughty and nice lists for Washington," he said at a Rodon Group plant that makes the popular K'nex brand of toys. "So you should keep your eye on who gets K'NEX this year. There are going to be some members of Congress who get them, and some who don't."

President Barack Obama looks over a rollercoaster with K'NEX Inventor Joel Glickman, left, and Rodon Group President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Araten, right, during a tour of the company in Hatfield, Pa. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Even the seriousness of the country’s fiscal health couldn’t keep the president from joking about his affable vice president.

Talking about the colorful toys in the factory, Obama said, “Joe Biden was in Costco. He wanted to buy some of this stuff. But I told him he had too much work to do. I wasn't going to have him building roller coasters all day long.”

If we don't balance the budget we will get closer and closer to the situation that Greece is in right now. If we don't start balancing the budget now, when will we?

I'm sorry Mr. President, I don't want you to continue cutting my taxes, or not making me pay my full contribution to Social Security. I want you to lead the movement towards tough choices and shared sacrifice. Every income-earning American should pay some income taxes. Graduated, sure, but everyone should pay something. Cut out all of these credits and tax breaks and lets work towards a balanced budget. And of course, that means we need to reign in our spending.

Everyone complains about the Bush tax cuts and wish for the times of the Clinton Administration when we had a budget surplus. Cool! Let's do it! Put the tax code back to that time and start the budget discussion from that level. Come on people!

That would be great firend except this man doesnt want that, he is a radical spending machine. That alone is very dangerous to our future in this country, sad but true. I agree with the other things you said but first the Bama has to cut the crapp with how he has been doing things.

Thank you

If I had a company with John McCain and Lindsay Graham as managers, they both would be “called on the carpet” and “put on notice” for causing too much commotion and disruption, for going beyond any common sense limits in addressing a legitimate issue and thereby creating disruption, wasting time and failing to productively do their jobs. Today this is the standard performance with many politicians', with their total focus being on aggressively faulting, stubbornly blocking and just using a lot of hype to further their political agenda without any real conscience for doing the country’s work or for the costs to the people - just their belligerent “my way or no way” mentality causing constant gridlock. It is absolutely disgusting in being totally, irresponsibly self-serving and simply as if they just don’t care.

Wait a minute so you think its the republicans acting like this and not your Socialist libbies. You need to go back to school, because they are much much worse okom. And by the way there are Establishment republicans and there are conservatives. The conservatives do not act in that manner, the other ones like you mentioned do and they are already pretty much Libbies and Socialists like you, so hum hum boohoo.

Oh by the way you sdidnt offer one solution, hmmmm????

Seems that the democrats are from the mindset that losers should get trophies also and even takes it to the next level by giving them to those watching form the stands having a beer. As for the Republicans well they need to accept the fact their team sucks and fold making room for a fresh new team.

Do you see the NFL or NBA handing out trophies and bonus checks to the losing teams every year? Are the paying fans to come to the games?

Geez, the "fiscal cliff" voted in by the congers and seenators and signed by the pres himself, before the last election as both parties could use the fiscal cliff to make the other party look bad.

The govt is spending 1.3 million, er, billion, er, trillion dollars more than it takes in in taxes. ok, some ideas. lets have the 341,500 .3% rich who are the cause of this, get over that, to pay 1.3 trillion more in taxes then at least the govt is spending within its means. so 1.3 trillion divided by 341,500 is an additional tax of per rich person of 3,806,734. So that won't work. Lookit that the bad rich dont make enough money. So the govt should make cuts so what it spends is what it makes. Period. is that going to hurt. You bet. Look at greece.

So bring the troops home in 2013 instead of 2014. We can quit borrowing money. How about cuts to welfare? We have the 4th generation coming up on welfare that never worked. just turned 18 and picked up their check. How about cuts to food stamps? Why not. do you know how much people make on those programs.

I know of three families, well actually three 19 year olds that got three girls preggers and now they are three. In total they recieve $5,500 a month in food stamps and welfare. So that means that each family gets $1833 a month tax free. At my tax rate I would have to make 26,900 a year or $14.01 (pardon while i slobber, must be nice) an hour. Now heres the problem. Neither of these three have the qualifications to get better than a minimum wage job. OK thats $7.25 an hour. So they could get work making $925 a month after taxes. Now explain to me where is the incentive to get off the govt dole? Also explain why i gotta work making less than this trying to pay bills, like a lot of people, and these guys get to sit and watch soaps all day or go fishing. Note to self, get food stamps and welfare, make more money and go fishing. Not worth the trouble to keep working.

I think welfare and food stamps could be cut back without people starving. We gotta make cuts somewhere. well no more cola for retired feds, social security and retired military. gonna bite some but we got to get the spending down.

How about starting with cuts to our leaders who all seem to have their heads up their third point of contact.

          President $400,000 plus bennies.

          Vice president 230,700 + bennies

senator pro tem, majority and minority leaders: $193,400 + bennies

run of the mill senator: $174,000 + bennies

Congressman $174,000, with majority and minority and speaker getting 193,400.

Nutz im done.. How about some cuts there. a good percentage of these guys are millionares.

gbob It is very apparent which party cares about the country. Only one party is discussing the debt and deficit. The other party thinks it is illogical to worry about such a thing.

We have a $1.2 trillion deficit and it needs to be addressed with higher taxes on everyone and serious cuts to medicaid and all other social services. Military needs cuts also. Get rid of a lot of useless bases in Europe.

Both sides need to come together and democrats better get serious about cuts. This country will not survive another 10 yrs. on the course we are on.

Can anyone seriously get their head around the people who are still blaming someone else after four years of the genious economist Obama and his cronies not running the economy, but running up debt, which is apparently all they are capable of? Four years from now, when Obama leaves office, his goodbye speech will be mostly about blaming those before him for the nations 8 years of misery, and the inherent good for all the comrades to convert to socialism. How sad and depressing.

Does ANYONE posting here truly believe that this country is on the right track with it's overspending and debt? Has anyone heard of Greece in the news lately? Has the Senate, controlled by democrats, produced a budget in the past 4 years as required by the constitution of this nation? Is this the fiscal cliff approaching, or is the fiscal cliff actually what our kids and grandkids are all going to fall off in the future due to the actions of these politicians, including a huge increase in the debt by Obama? And finally, should the Republicans just give in to Obama on this tax issue for his and his media's talk of working on spending cuts next year, and does anyone here believe there would be any serious budget cuts at that time?

Go over the cliff Prez. Everyone should have to pay a little more. Dems don't like cuts to social programs then pay a little more. Repubs want cuts in spending, that's what they get with the sequester. If $2000.00 more a year is the breaking point for the middle class then there is no middle class. If $167.66 a month breaks the bank in your household believe me you're not in the middle class and if you are you've done a terrible job with your personal finances. The problem is no one wants to pay anything but want everything. I'm a strong believer that if you want a strong government, you want to help the poor, you want to make sure grandma and grandpa are able to retire with dignity then put your money where your mouth is. If the Pres is truly as smart and savy as we're led to believe he has to see that the sequester is the best thing for this country. Sure the economy will take a hit but it will bounce back once the dust settles and we'll be better off as a country. Stop the whinning partisan electorate and do what is best for the country not your pocketbooks.

My "Point" is this: Romney's campaign was focused largely on a signle issue: Grow the economy to create jobs. Those who believed that this issue was of primar importance to this nation as whole voted for Romney. Your statistic indicates that 71% of while males held such a belief.

Obama's campaign focused on no single issue. Obama championed entitlement programs, the cause of illegal immigrants, gay marriage, a woman's right to an abortion....yet with no SINGLE issue to hold as primarily important, 93%........NINETY THREE PERCENT!!!!!!!........ of black Americans still shamefully voted for Obama. (the first time he ran Obama carried 95% of all black Americans votes). Clearly their vote was based on nothing more than skin color. I am not a racist, but then neither am I a damn fool not to see it for what it was.

None of the several divisive and polarizing issues which Obama ran on gained such a high percentage of a block of electorate votes.

You will be amazed at how that man managed to gain control over an entire country and how another leader's "footsteps" are similiarly emerging. The biggest similiarities are getting control of the country's pursestrings, gaining the trust and faith of the young people and minorities, dismantling the military to rebuild his own, and he was an unknown to the majority of the country when he became a leader. Above it all, he is an A-one egotist who firmly believes that he deserves to be the leader of HIS country far beyond the time he is allotted!!

Many of those that are now exempt from paying taxes will be paying taxes. That is what will happen. I am middle income. If my taxes go up than some who are exempt now should pay more. I have a friend that said that she should not have to pay taxes. But in the same breath thinks that I should. I don't make much more then she does but she is at the level where she doesn't pay taxes. A difference of 5000 dollars a year. I pay 3000 in federal income just so she doesn't have to pay taxes. So if mine go up so should hers and others that should be paying taxes.

                                                                              Reply#513 - Sat Dec 1, 2012 12:34 PM EST

It was passed in a bi-partisan manner by the Senate. If you truly believe you have the American people behind you, you will bring it to the floor for an up-or-down vote. No amendments. If you don't we will know you are blowing smoke and holding the middle class hostage to protect the wealthy. Your choice.

Did you even think this through? You mean small businesses and corporations. They look at taxes as expenses. They raise prices when they can but more often cut employees. Many move production overseas. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Wonder why they move overseas? Rich people are mobile. They have options. States raise taxes and businesses and people leave. Look at California, Illinois and New York. They end up bringing in less.

                                                                                      #514.4 - Sat Dec 1, 2012 1:07 PM EST

These are the very same people who voted FOR Obama in overwhelming numbers. Wish fullfilled!

How out of touch can he be. Golf, vacations, campaigning with the stars, more golf..can't believe the Dems can't see through him. But then it's probably those thinking they're going to get something more from him. Quit blaming Repubs-the Dems will do nothing to curb out of control spending; and the taxes on his 'rich' will only be a drop in the bucket. Can't any of you do math anymore. Can't keep spending more than you can take in.
