Obama presses Congress to extend middle-class tax cuts

If Congress can't agree on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, the president said taxes will rise by about $2,000 for the average family. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

HATFIELD, Pa. --  President Obama today continued his efforts to push Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for income below $250,000 with a visit to a toy factory here in suburban Philadelphia.

"We talked about this a lot... We had debates about it. There were a lot of TV commercials about it," Obama said. “At the end of the day, a clear majority of Americans -- Democrats, Republicans, independents -- they agreed with a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making sure that middle-class taxes don't go up.”

Recommended: White House 'surprised' by GOP 'surprise'

The non-partisan Tax Policy Center says if these tax cuts expire at the end of the year -- as they are set to do -- about 90% of Americans would paid more in taxes and middle-income families would see their taxes rise by about $2,000.

Obama didn’t present any new ideas in his first speech since House Republicans rejected Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s proposal that he presented in meetings with congressional leadership yesterday. That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.

But Obama did couch his frustration with Congress in humor.

“I've been keeping my own naughty and nice lists for Washington," he said at a Rodon Group plant that makes the popular K'nex brand of toys. "So you should keep your eye on who gets K'NEX this year. There are going to be some members of Congress who get them, and some who don't."

President Barack Obama looks over a rollercoaster with K'NEX Inventor Joel Glickman, left, and Rodon Group President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Araten, right, during a tour of the company in Hatfield, Pa. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Even the seriousness of the country’s fiscal health couldn’t keep the president from joking about his affable vice president.

Talking about the colorful toys in the factory, Obama said, “Joe Biden was in Costco. He wanted to buy some of this stuff. But I told him he had too much work to do. I wasn't going to have him building roller coasters all day long.”

"I personnally think that the Obama administration wants the tax cuts to end."

The LEFT wants their ideological fantasies about social justice to prevail. Let them try, and watch it burn.

Go over the cliff Prez, Harry and Nancy... then vote out the filibuster on day one, pass the new Obama tax cuts in senate and then run it over to the House and see what the teabaggers do. Have your mass communications out to the 99/98% that repubs are holding us hostage and going to tax us more. Even Krauthiemer the educated cons pundit wants this (or at least the cliff fall part), so call their bluff.

Apparently, Republicans want Obama to do his job as well as Boehner’s job too. It’s called negotiations Republicans. Offer up something, just don’t say “NO” like you have for 4 years.

It's becoming more obvious that America, as we understood it, is no more. This was a promise Barack Obama made in 2008, to fundamentally change the United States.

It's happening and those who desire a more socialized type of government appear to be in a more advantageous position.

We are in for change that many probably never thought they would see in their lifetime, and with the leadership in place, steering America away from our roots, they are changing the future for generations to come. We will look back and remember what it was like when America was the true land of opportunity.

A sad day for many - and victory for others

You rightwing nutcases obviously do not understand economics or business, which is understandable since you all live under a bridge. When taxes go up, businesses look for ways to minimize their tax obligation. The simplest way to do that is to invest in their business by putting more people to work. Therefore, just as reducing taxes never created one job, increasing taxes always increases jobs and business expansion.

Are you really saying that higher taxes expand the business sector? Just look how that turned out in California. F'n idiot.

It seems that the Democrats, led by President Obama, realize that the way to solve this problem is through a ng more won't help. The Republicans, on the other hand, want only to cut spending but have no taste for revenue increases. Taxation is only one way we have of raising revenue. If they had been doing their jobs Congress, specifically the House of Representatives, would have figured this out and would have already offered the President a bill he could sign. They would be able to claim bipartisan cooperation and everybody would look good. Unfortunately, even after the whoopin' they got in the election which clearly sides with the President they continue their pathetic route to self destruction within the Republican ranks. Boehner can't seem to control the extremists either. He seems to work out a deal with the White House and then it falls apart because of lack of support from the right wing nut job Fascist wannabes in the Congress.

                  Guys,

We have a spending problem - even if you get the tax proposals on the top 2% that is only $64 billion additional revenue per year. This funds the government for one week. We are running trillion dollar deficits each year. $64 billion is nothing - Our current spending is 25% to GDP under Clinton it was 20% it should be around 18%. We are not focusing on the real problem which is spending. We are on a path of destruction and the politicians are just playing politics - what a joke. Please bond vigilantes do not loan the USA any more money or at least at such high rates that we will finally get real on what our issue is with this country - We love all the entitlements we just don't want to pay for them.

I.e. Socialism works until you run out of other peoples money - Margret Thatcher ( look at Greece, they have to lick the boots of others to get more money for their entitlements, how degrading - we are just around the corner of licking the boots of our Chinese masters

Dagon - as your know both republicans and Democrats have been running up the debt so please stop with the nonsense. If Obama keeps at his pace he will be responsible for 40% of the total USA debt in just eight years ( 8 trillion / 20trillion = 40%) history will prove him to be a disaster if he doesnt change the spending path.

Can it get any simpler for the 98% of us to see, even the half that are republicans in the 98%? GOP leaders do not want to help more Americans get affordable quality health care nor do they want to give the middle, upper middle, and working classes a permanent tax cut because the Prez wants to let the TEMPORARY tax cut for the rich to expire like GW Bush planned on. Why else did Bush make them temporary when he had 6 years of both houses of congress control to make them permanent? All you travelers, now you know why those middle class Canadians and Europeans you have met and will continue to meet on your vacation and business trips there wonder what the heck is going on in America from the air pollution/acid rain we showered on Canada to these middle class treatment issues - its the GOP, 100 million people in their own world no maybe parallel universe.

BigBearCat as far as the Health-Care goes that' water over the CLIFF already , you now have BO-DUMBO-CARE and are stuck with it! As far as the TAX cuts go they were ALL to expire in 2010 under the way the law was written BUT in 2010 the Senate (democrat controlled) House (democrat controlled) and Preisdent (Democrat) extened them for ALL till 12/31/2012, so these are not Bush's tax cuts anymore they are the democrats, and now they ONLY want the highest tax bracket to go back to wha they were. Also the current adminstration wants to increase the taxes and with a MAYBE cut spending promise, and an UNLIMITED CAP on spending. Since the current President promised to have 5.4% unemployment and a reduced debt, and to have reduced spending all in his first term which DID NOT HAPPEN, why sould be believe that MAYBE cut spending promise.

It only makes sense that you need to cut your spending, if, your going to bring in less money. Obama is saying let's bring in less money without cutting the spending... Congress is saying "we need less spending". It's basic finances... I know the media is trying to spin Obama is a good guy on this, and even showing him saying he wants something "balanced", but, the truth is he is not proposing something even close to balanced. Which will end up creating more and more debt and deficit...

Obama is the elected leader. It is his job to solve the fiscal problem by leading Congress to a solution. Republicans should tell Obama to lead or resign. They will wait for him to lead the country out of the crisis or will impeach him for not doing anything. The corrupt Chicago Democrat was supported by the mainstream media. They can live with the crisis they create and die with the crisis they created. It may be time to burn news journalists at the stake for supporting corruption.

Moron, Obama is the only one offering solutions. Republicans are saying no to everything. To you, that must be leadership.

What solutions is Obama offering? The Republicans are the ones offering serious solutions to the deficit. The democrats are the ones who refuse to even vote on house bills. So who is really the one saying no to everything?

Obama's plan will fail more than the Ford Edsel did. The only difference is Ford is still standing. He wants to keep spending so ask yourself how will putting more tax burden on only 2% of the population help to chip away at a debt that will keep rising with all the spending he wants, honestly and factually, it won't. What will eventually happen is that all of our taxes will go up on the Federal and State level to pay for Obama's out of control spending, and he will continue adding more than a trillion every year until his next term is up. The person's who most be affected by Obama's idiotic policies are our children and grandchildren. I know America has become the "me" place to live, but really do you want to place this burden on your children and grandchildren for a plan that has not and won't work?

When Obama was at Knex Toys today, he used the same rhetoric about protecting the middle class--what about the people he has driven to poverty in his first term, and what about the people he will drive to poverty with his ill advised policies? I also have a question for Knex--how much did it cost your company to hold this photo op with Obama today and will that cost be passed on to the consumer who are stupid enough to buy your products or will it be passed on to the employees? To Obama--you want to reach across the table and work with Republicans and Congress, than your childish and asinine comment about who will get presents and who won't in Congress shows again how much you lie and get away with lying because you have no intentions of working with any political party even your own because you are a man scorned and you have been out to get those that have peaved off yourself and your hippie mom and gypsy grandparents.

What to do … what to do? I’m torn between going over the financial cliff and raising taxes on everyone. I admit it would be fun reading the blogs and watching the poor pawn their Flat Screens. Or do we give the President his way and watch the entire Country seep backwards even more. Either way I win because it will be good entertainment. Heartless. You bet … I have never seen so many Socialist, Marxist and Communist coming out of the closet. Pity. No Morals, No Religion, No Ethics. At least I will be having a good time ... either way.

@Dagan - You should be careful calling people tard, when your facts are all messed up... and you look the way you do.

The "unpaid" parts of the war only applied to Obama's first year of deficit... the next 3 years are all Obama.

Check the facts at factcheck dot org.... And start blaming ALL of the things that Obama is doing, on Obama...

Addl fact: Obama increased the military that was in Afghanastan in his second and third years...

Got this spam email from the whitehouse propaganda spin machine today. Not exactly correct or factual, and pretty much one sided, but I suppose people believe whatever the singing Presidents people push on them...Hello --

When President Obama asked you to tell us what the middle-class tax cuts meant for your families, we knew you'd speak up. But I don't think any of us were prepared for this.

The stories started pouring in immediately. Within a couple hours, we received messages from tens of thousands of people. Folks from every state in the country took time to write in. You nearly took over Twitter, where the hashtag #My2K trended all day.

And people are starting to pay attention. News outlets are writing stories about how everyday Americans are engaged in this debate. Decision makers are coming to the sudden realization that they can't ignore the perspective of the middle class when it comes to cutting taxes.

You're changing an entire policy conversation. And we have to keep it up.

Tell us what $2,000 means to middle-class families.

There's no denying the power of your voices.

We heard from a woman in Alabama who explained that $2,000 was a crucial part of her family budget -- the choice between two house payments, three car payments, or medical prescriptions for a year.

We heard from a farmer in Michigan, just starting his business, who wants to use $2,000 to invest in two greenhouses so he can extend his growing season.

We heard from a dad in Indiana who did the math and realized that $2,000 will buy groceries for his family for 23.5 weeks.

We heard from graduate students working to pay down student loans and parents trying to help put their kids through school.

And these folks are not alone. Unless Congress acts, 114 million middle-class American families are staring down a tax increase starting January 1.

So we need you to join them. We're doing everything to draw attention to the stories you share with us. We're sharing them on Facebook and Twitter. We're putting them on the front page of the White House website.

                        Will you speak out today?

                        Thanks,

                        David

Forgot to mention, if they just give in then they know nothing will ever be addressed about the debit. No tax reform's. No removing the loopholes the 1% and Corporations use to NOT pay tax's, and so on.

Every thing will be kicked to the next President, four years from now.

The majority of Americans voted for big government and entitlements. Who the hell want to embrace self-reliance and achievements, obiviously the minority. Face four more years of economic stagnation and enjoy it. Americans had their chance to turn things around and blew it . Too bad.
