It has been reported that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was less than impressed with the White House's fiscal-cliff proposal. So unimpressed was the Kentucky Republican that he burst out into laughter.
A senior administration official provided more detail. When Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner handed over the White House's proposal to McConnell, McConnell looked at it and smiled a smile that said, "Yeah right."
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile," Geithner responded.
At which point, McConnell burst out laughing.
*** UPDATE *** A Republican congressional source says that Geithner's proposal was oral, not written. And the source argues that McConnell "found their un-serious offer amusing."

Good ole B!tch McConnell
He has once again shown that he isn't the kind of Senator that needs to represent Kentucky.
I shink I hears a 'squatch' im thar 'moon shiner' voods.
He is smiling because he finally had a good bowel movement today after being constipated all week long.
He refuses to release his medical records so we don't know what his problem is but at his age....?
If I felt the need to work at his age, I would be embarassed.
constipated all week long. Hell with a face like that it looks like he;'s been constipated for years not weeks
The deal has already been made. It was made a year ago. To get enough votes to pass another raise in the debt ceiling, the Republicans agreed to let the Bush tax cuts expire, which basically returned the tax rates to the Clinton era, while requiring the government to make significant cuts in government spending, primarily hurting the military and forcing them to cut back in their operations. If no new proposal is made before the end of the year that replaces the existing deal, then taxes will rise on everyone, the rich and the poor and everyone in between. And we will get more reductions in spending than is presently being proposed by Obama. If I was a Republican, I would do nothing. The existing deal is better than the new Obama proposal. It actually makes significant cuts in spending, which is something that has never happened in my lifetime. It also restores tax rates that are lower than what Obama is currently proposing. That is a win-win for the Republicans. If I had to make a counter proposal, then I would write a law that caps government spending at 19% of the GDP, requires all entitlement programs to be fully funded at all times, and also prohibits any payroll taxes from being used for anything other than what they were intended to fund. That would stop the constant raiding of the Social Security fund for other purposes. That would stop future government expansion beyond what the economy could stand and would probably cause many in Congress to become more pro business in their legislation just so they could raise more tax revenue from an expanding economy. With these laws in place, I wouldn't care if they never wrote another budget proposal. Right now, they are acting like people I know that constantly overspend their income. They don't have a budget either, and think money grows on trees.
If it was a 'win-win', the Gops wouldn't bother showing up at the 'bargaining table'.......this is more than a 'dog and pony show'.
McConnell was the one that said he wanted to make sure Obama a one term President -- remember. This guy has to worry about running again. I say his state should look at the wealth he has amassed since joining Congress, remember that he doesn't pay social security yet will have a life time pension that is off the chain and that he made his wealth while in Congress (a little thing called insider knowledge). To hell with all of them - let's kick them all out and start over. I need serious people that want to handle serious business for me. Remember, they work for you and me -- most need to be fired!
You are exactly right, but us poor ole 'sheep' keep re-electing these 'socialist minded' Gops and Dems back in office time and time again. Most politicians Socialist???....yes, as they have their noses in the public feed bag taking from the general society, and at the same time are exempt from the major policies they enact into law for the 'sheep'........what a hypocracy.
This is not a 'Democracy', this is a 'Hypocracy'
i wanna hear Mitch the Bitches laugh when he meets his real Boss and tries to enter the Pearly Gates!
Republicans want to hire workers and not pay them a living wage or provide them with any benefits and then get mad when the government try to provide a small amount of assistance or level the playing field but they will not support a mass sterilization program to rid the country of poor people. What is it they want?
JC in G wrote: 2 trillion in cuts over 10 years, hmmm, seems like that is about 200 billion per year. 1.6 trillion in new taxes to be collected in 2013 and each year after that, hmmm, that about 16 trillion in 10 years. 16-2 should equal about 14 trillion new debt. OK, that puts us at about 30 trillion in national debt. Sounds fair to me. We want to make sure this proposal is fair.
NO. 1.6T in new taxes but also in 10 years. The total taxes collected by the federal government now are slightly more than 2.0T, no one is going to almost double them!
I'd find McConnell's demise even more amusing...
Anyone who has read "The Federalist" knows that the authors of the constitution wanted the House of Representatives to be composed of people who paused their workforce life to serve one term and then return to their former career. Truly being representatives of the people. Tenured positions were only to happen in the Senate. There is at least as much energy put into getting re-elected as there is in doing the peoples' work they were elected to do. One term representatives would not spend half their time on re-election activities as they now do. The fiscal cliff was created by "legislators" who love to deal in brinksmanship, looking over the edge and laughing...
OH PULEASEEEEEEE, just stop it -- none of the bickering, and back and forth from right to left, from up to down is going to solve anything and ALLLLLLLL the politicians need to stop posturing and get to doing the job we put them there to do. Instead of going before the cameras to get a 'good' sound bite in, put that effort into solving the problem and find that "BALANCED" approach. I will say one thing, at least the Democrats have produced a plan...where is is the Republican plan, what's in that plan...never heard the specifics during the election run...so what programs do they want cut so that we can get something through Congress before we do go over that "fiscal" cliff! It's not anyone party's fault -- it's the fault of everyone in each party being so pig headed they can't see the forest through the trees...get on with it Congress -- or you will certainly have to pay a price both personally and professionally in a few years!!!!
And people STOP all the name calling...most of you are only repeating those stupid little 'sound bites'...you really don't have a clue about what really is going on with the budget or this fiscal cliff-- when we actually get the Republican plan in ink, perhaps we all can quietly sit down and read both plans and decide then who has the better plan, or at least be smart enough to have an intelligent conversation about it -- not like what's happening now!
I say lets go over the cliff! Everybody is in the train & we all take the hit.Screw all the people the same. The hard fact is we we spend 30% more than we take in in taxes.Get rid of all the tax brakes on every body, pull your own weight & stop asking U Sam to do it for you.
Or lets all take another ride in the tea cups in make never never land.
Was Mitch's laugh a nervous one? Obstinate to the last- would make a great inscription of the gravestone of the Republican Party.
We need more revenue, Mitch! Lowest tax rates in over sixty years and still they want to protect millionaires and billionaires from a modest increase. Should be some good theater coming!!
Obama will wipe that smile from his face. Kinda of like Romney's
If Republican Senators are getting paid well for doing nothing, shouldn't we be lambasting them for being Obama freeloaders who live off government handouts?
McConnell is laughing because he won't be hurt by the obstructive and destructive ideology and behavior of the GOP. He's laughing because he thinks that he can destroy the will of the people. He doesn't care about the American people -- it's all about power.
The GOP is NOT about doing what is in the best interests of America but what is in the best interests of the GOP.
We no longer have "statesmen" in America only "politicians" whose pursuit of power is unrelenting and destructive to this nation.
I enjoy seeing Mr. McConnell and his lack of upper lip on the news daily.
Fat Mitch "The Pillsbury Dough Boy" and that little weasel Cantor need slapped. Smug bastards.
I very much like the idea of capping deductions at some dollar amount. I'm partial to capping deductions at $35,000.00 or maybe lower. Desperately need to cut the military spending and stop waging preemtive wars. Raise capital gains tax to 19% and raise Medicare payroll tax by 1%.
What's behind McConnells laugh?
Senility!
That's my Senator From Hell!!!
If I was the POTUS I'd wheel in the tax code marked up with all the loopholes that will disappear and all income that becomes "income" and the progressive rates that will change. Then tell them we are now going to tax every trade on the exchange and every sale on the internet.
Every time they say no add something HUGE! Let them know that stalling is not in their best interests.
Tell them they have to pass the jobs bills, infrastructure bills, SB credits, FAA upgrades, and every stimulus bill we've tried to get passed for 2 years.
That's the first time they laugh...NEXT {click}
Wish McConnell would just up and die before Christmas along with other GOP that have held the country back for so many years now.Gerrymandering is the only thing keeping McConnell and a lot of GOP in office.I absolutly despise the man,(if you can even call McConnell a man.Certainally not a patriot. ).
Does this clown not realize he's being set up? Democrats want Republicans to gridlock the government, as they always do anyway. Then, when taxes go up on 98% (including the Republican 47%) of the population, they'll blame it on Republicans. The polls have already shown that this will work. Democrats will finally get to raise taxes, and Republicans will take the heat. I don't think he'll be laughing after he loses the next election.
After the swearing in, the Democrats will re-instate the reduced tax rates for the middle class, and make the rich pay their fair share - which of course should be the rates under President Eisenhower.
Hey Mitch, I am a conservative but the party needs new poster Boys. Rich, grumpy old men, career insiders that talk like they have marlbles in their mouth is not helping the conservative platform from an image standpoint......please run and hide from the cameras. The party needs youth and vitality of all races to sell the conservative platform as having more opportunity than dependency which only breeds depression & recession. Hit the road Mitch!
McConnell, the far right wing, extremist, fanatic who gave the world his Party's plan of action in 2008, "We intend to make Obama a one-term president!" Now, we hear about his laughter rather than his concern for the American Middle, Working, and Underclasses. Look at his picture long and hard. You're seeing the actual face of one of the most sinister, evil, far right wing, extremist, fanatics in the world! To the voters of Kentucky---join the movement to recall this sinister, evil, crook and replace him with a CENTER leader---Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Green Party member---and demand that he or she engage in a meaningful, civil effort to resolve our national problems.
The People's Revolutionary Underclass. Like prison, without regular washing.
Peikovian: Thank you for supporting my argument. I appreciate when you far right wing, extremist, fanatics (or "Necessary Idiots" as your leaders call you) lay out for us your pledge to Grover Norquist and his believers in bringing about your long awaited American Plutocracy. You people are my strongest supporters in enlightening the people to demand a return to the CENTER! Thank you for that!
