It has been reported that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was less than impressed with the White House's fiscal-cliff proposal. So unimpressed was the Kentucky Republican that he burst out into laughter.
A senior administration official provided more detail. When Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner handed over the White House's proposal to McConnell, McConnell looked at it and smiled a smile that said, "Yeah right."
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile," Geithner responded.
At which point, McConnell burst out laughing.
*** UPDATE *** A Republican congressional source says that Geithner's proposal was oral, not written. And the source argues that McConnell "found their un-serious offer amusing."

It was either a ploy to get the other side to back down or a nervous laugh because he knew he is screwed.

The Democrats are not obligated to help you find a counterproposal. The dems pretty much laid out what they wanted to do during the election whereas the The Repubs never gave any specifics where they wanted to cut.

Mark/ I agree about the lack of production from our employees.They should never have been allowed to set their own wages and benefit's. No Representatives of any description should have that luxury. It is ridiculous for the gov.reps and also for union reps. When we ,the general public elect/hire people to represent us we should set wage and benefits,which certainly should be pegged to our wages and benefits. that way they would have a true interest in our advancement. I also feel that a slap on the wrist for malfeasance whilst in office should be punished much more severely than minor dishonesty.Where the he** did they come up with that one? It is about time that all of these people were made to turn over the control to their employers.
Hmm funny how the repubs (as you morons call them) are wanting spending and deficit reduction, and the democrats just want to play class warfare,,even lib idiots know that raising the tax rates on those making over $250,000 yearlys does absolutley nothing to solve any revenue issues.
Mitch needs to get all his laughing in now. He has less than 2 more years in the Senate, thank God for the entire country for that! But especially for the good citizens in the great state of Kentucky, who are monumentally embarrassed and fed up with this Cretin of all cretins! He's up for re-election in the 2014 mid-terms. It is at that point that the law that we painfully need in this country - that no member of Congress who leaves can get a job as a lobbyist for five years - should be in place, but probably will not be. The great part is we'll be rid of Mitch, the bad part - he'll saunter on over to K Street and get hired as a lobbyist by some idiot firm who will pay him a million+ per year! Far more than he gets now, and within his job as he's performed it so far, he's disgustingly overpaid! No one in the Congress defines DIRT BAG the way good old Mitch does!

My theory is this:
I can assure you POTUS is NOT playing chicken! Had the Congress done their job in the last 2 years sequestration wouldn't have happened. Everything that is about to happen is a GOP made crisis of their own making!
If we weren't holding up the world economy I'd say "Thelma and Louise the damn tax cuts"!!!
But right now corporations are sitting on budgets for next year and they have massive projects that need to get done in IT that are on hold because of the uncertainty. That uncertainty is keeping me from going back to work!!
If I was the POTUS I'd wheel in the tax code marked up with all the loopholes that will disappear and all income that becomes "income" and the progressive rates that will change. Then tell them we are now going to tax every trade on the exchange and every sale on the internet.
Every time they say no add something HUGE! Let them know that stalling is not in their best interests.
Tell them they have to pass the jobs bills, infrastructure bills, SB credits, FAA upgrades, and every stimulus bill we've tried to get passed for 2 years.

Congress was charged with getting agreements on what to cut and cleaning up the tax code 4 damn years ago and they spent 4 years jacking off not doing their jobs waging a 3rd war we didn't need waiting for Obama to go away. Well he isn't going away and the sequester is a GOP made crisis just like the last debt ceiling fiasco that cost us our AAA credit rating.
Right now the International financial markets are holding their breath waiting to see if the GOP is going to really ask every person to bend over for their rectal insertion of the new tax rates they refuse to vote on now that the Senate has already passed months ago.

What the hell is wrong with the people of Kentucky? They keep voting old Tortoise-Neck back into office although the guy is clearly an obstructionist. Then they vote out another nut job in Jim Bunning and replace him with an equally nutty Rand Paul. Too much inbreeding is the only logical explanation I can think of.

That's exactly what our country and our lives mean to our congress. A big fat, fun joke. They are all rich and in control of what is going to affect their lives, so they can make a joke about our lives. A sad day for America.
Republicans have a choice...... agree to something and get something in return, or go over the cliff and get nada. We keep talking about a fiscal cliff. I wish I could push every single republican operative, starting with Boehner, Cantor and McConnell over a cliff fer realz. The only fly in the ointment is that that is a crime, they have families that would probably miss them, but reading about their infantile antics, I do get a certain satisfaction from thinking about it.
Mr Mac reminds me of my old uncle Ron. Old, white, wealthy, obnoxious, oblivient to others needs, condescending, and so into his own old beliefs and narciscistic ways. I don't begrudge him because I do not believe he is aware of how embarrassing he is to the country and his party. He is like a lot of old people who never want to change and continue to hang on to their old glory days which many times were damaging but they would be the last to admit. Mitch needs to let go of his memories, typewriter and big chief tablet. I am 73 and it has taken some jolting my ego to realize that the old school did not necessarily mean the best way. After all he is the reason I became so active in this last election because of his audacity to verbally on air express his desire NOT to see the country suceed but "to make OB a one year presidency". What he said was...I do not care about this country's well being or progress, I only care about defaulting one man's seat.
