After criticism, GOP adds woman to chair House committee

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Lack of diversity has been an issue for the GOP, and many strategists believe that the party’s problems with women and minorities led to President Obama’s re-election.

Miller has been in Congress since 2003, and her highest committee level post is on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

Oh, the great adventures in diversity. If I were the recipient of a job based on the need to fill a diversity vacancy, I'd be offended really.

Perhaps we should have more white men on the football field to diversify our teams.

And baksetball, to use the ghetto pronunciation. No such thing as qualifications as long as the skin color is correct, you have sex in the lib-popular mode of the day, or pee sitting down. Qualifications be damned. It's all about the agenda.

Such a transparently pathetic pander to improve a self-inflicted wound to the image of the Republican Party.

Talk about a party in self-destruct mode. Really, appointing someone to a committee when that person was not on the committee is unheard of in modern times.

She should feel insulted...

"oversight of campaign finance"? Are they serious?

According to its Web site (www.house.gove) the House has 25 committees. While not wanting to denigrate this appointment for Ms. Miller, her party apparently still considers women best qualified for housekeeping and secretarial-type responsibilities. Having come late to the 20th century, the Republicans remain tardy for the 21st.

Typical. You can always count of the GOP to do the right thing when their back is to the wall, their hands tied, their mouths gagged, and they have a loaded pistol pointed at their head. Why does this sorry excuse for a political party even still exist? Count on the GOP to trot this woman out at press conferences in order to show just how with it and open minded they are; but bottom line, the GOP will always treat her as the token they believe her to be.

The term is for this poor woman is "token"- and it's too little, too late. I have an old poster in my home office from Despair.com (no, that's actually a website)- it's a picture of a bunch of old white guys in suits posing in a boardroom. The caption is "Celebrate Diversity", and I've always thought it was descriptive of not just the glass ceiling and the bigoted smugness of rich white males, but the Republican Party in general- which "only now, at the end" understands that they can't be elected by a minority with fiscal clout- i.e. people like the Koch Brothers- unless they at least appear to serve and respect the majority.

Wow - her self-esteem must be right DOWN there with the Black, Latino, and Gay republicans.

Now they are drawing more attention to, and just trying to cover up the fact that the GOP are all MORONS. Nothing has changed. Beyond imagination how this many people lack so much judgment. They could not keep a job in the private sector beyond a month.

Parties aside, a huge embarassment for our country.

What exactly does the job involve? Is she now in charge of administrative stuff like receptionists, secretaries or is she in charge of making sure their lunch is served on time, making sure the toilets are cleaned and the parking garage is paved - what exactly is her job? Why was she not selected for the committee she was a member of in 2012?

I see this as a slap in the face to all women that voted for the Republican party in 2012. Mistakes can be corrected vote for the other guy in 2014, because what the Republican women did in 2012 for 2013 is not working?

Shame on the Republican party men for trying to demean their party women!

Being from Michigan and familiar with the mess Ms Miller created as Secretary of State, this post is about the most that she can handle. Not to defend the Republicans at all, but Candace Miller is about as effective a leader as my big toe.

Hey Boehner, your blatant yet pathetically thin tokenism is what any thinking person would call "Too Little Too Late". However, since that is the credo of today's Repubs/Baggers, I guess it all falls in with your deliberately atavistic philosophy. Grow up, grow a pair or two, and grow into another profession because none of you know what you're doing in your present jobs!

When insanity becomes the norm then the sane become the insane, by force of numbers.

Having one sane woman amongst a horde of insane male politicians can be a big pain. The issue is how to control her if she starts spouting logical solutions to problems.

So she is in charge of the cafeteria...right back in the kitchen where she belongs. If they were going to have a token woman, they could have at least given her a different committee and given the "kitchen" committee to a man. Oh wait...why am I thinking...they are republicans...they want all females in the kitchen where we belong.

Yep, to the libs, qualifications mean nothing. It's all about the way a person pees, or the color of their skin. It's all about appearances. America sure will be in great shape four years from now. At least there will only be one way for us to go - up. If we're still recognizable as America, that is. Good for you libs. Anything to hasten the ever-increasing decline we are witnessing. Not just witnessing - many are actively and gleefully taking part.

How many nine-year veteran women of the Senate are chairing a committee? How many nine-year veteran women chaired committees in the last, or any, Democrat controlled house? Any? Come on you libsuckers, speak up or forever hold your penis.
