After criticism, GOP adds woman to chair House committee

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Lack of diversity has been an issue for the GOP, and many strategists believe that the party’s problems with women and minorities led to President Obama’s re-election.

Miller has been in Congress since 2003, and her highest committee level post is on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

Rep. Miller must feel good being an afterthought. The boys just don't get it, do they? And they wonder why they lost? Keep watching their behavior over the next few weeks and you will gain even further insight!

The Speaker of the House has nothing to do with the appointment to the UN.

Sounds like the Chauvinist insults are all coming from the liberals here! Anytime someone says that they gave her a minimal post so that she can go home and not make dinner is insulting to the intelligence of this woman! Obviously, the story which was written by NBC News is to incite fury of the GOP at all costs! The post on here are degrading to women and they are not coming from the GOP, they are coming from the liberal idiots who feel that they are above EVERYONE and can do and say what they want no matter how false or absurd! Your intelligence is the exact reason the United States needs to rid us of the US Dept of Ed.

Who was it that couldn't tell ANYONE the specifics of their so called plan?? Listen, Romney's callin ya, he needs his car elevator cleaned, Better get to it boy. And anyways, the gop does just fine on their own to make themselves look like the a$$hole they are. They don't need any help.

      CCook -

NBC doesn't need to do anything - the GOPers keep 'stepping in it' all by themselves. Maybe they need a woman to head up a Office of How You Treat a Woman since obvisously the GOPers don't know this!

Did you really miss the fact that the liberal "idiots" were using satire to make a point?

"Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon."

It's a more nuanced type of persuasive editorial. Though I'm sure with your elevated intelligence you didn't need that dumb US Dept of Education to tell you to study writing forms in high school.

I think it's telling that Boehner still referred to her new title as "Chairman".

"Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee."

The term is chairwoman. Not chairman. Chairwoman. I would have thought that Bonehead Boehner would have learned a few lessons from the Politically Correct terminology adopted by the Senate back in early to mid 1990's. Chairwoman.

So. They placed a woman in charge of the Cafeteria, and Blotters. Well nice to know that the red, white, and blue Bunts will be an everyday affair. Still. It almost sounds like a demotion. Homeland security to Cafeteria? Well the environmentally correct choice would be paper cups, but we have to think of the styrofoam subsidies that help create tends of thousands of jobs to the Styrofoam market, so in essence the styrofoam will be much cheaper, but less environmentally correct.

But then again, when did the GOP give a damn about the environment. After all, global warming is a myth. All god fearing christian politicians know the "truth".

The sad thing is that after years of right-wing indoctrination and suppression of gender-equality, she probably naively believes that she was selected for this position based on her merits. (She may indeed be qualified...perhaps even over-qualified, but that is not why she was selected.)

              Sad GOP...sad...

What a bunch of hypocrits! It doesn't count if you are forced to do something right. The House Republicans are trying to show us how progressive they are; yet it wasn't until the obvious was pointed out to them that decided they should try to change their "anti-anyone but a white male" attitude. This is more of an insult than when McCain chose Palin as a VP candidate to offset Hillary not winning the nominaton. Because, afterall, us little women folk, only vote with our hearts never our intelligence. Give me a break!!

Do these guys really think the American people are so stupid that we would just fall all over ourselves being impressed with their choosing a women as a chairperson for one of their committees. The fact that it is the House Administration Committee is like saying they hired a female secretary to keep their office supplies stocked. HYPOCRITS!!!

This bunch really has no clue with what is wrong with them. How pitiful!!

Donna/Pitiful is not a word that I choose for the Republican/Tea Party. The Republican/Tea Party has been brought into being by the actions of the Republican Party ' selling of themselves to a private individual, with the support of four Democrats. No one who is on the Norquist list as having received gifts/bribes? should be allowed to hold office as elected Representatives to the government of the U.S.A. and for the Republican Party to have made a deal with the devil in the hope of becoming the major part of our Government, has prov en an extremely unwise move on their part. This nation repeatedly rejects extremes of the right and left in our party systems.

She should of turned it down -- if only for the sake of saving herself from being a token appt! She HAS to know this is why she was appointed! WHAT an incredibly, stupid, insensative, ludicrous, dumb@ass move! Boehner has shown himself to be an even bigger idiot then I thought he was!
