After criticism, GOP adds woman to chair House committee

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Lack of diversity has been an issue for the GOP, and many strategists believe that the party’s problems with women and minorities led to President Obama’s re-election.

Miller has been in Congress since 2003, and her highest committee level post is on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

But in the GOP's defense - it IS difficult for a woman to take on the responsibilities of a Chairmanship.

Afterall, a woman's body is so busy "frightening and tightening" to fend off unwanted sperm, there's not usually enough energy left to take on such a job. Better leave the serious thinking to the men folk...

Sad the one thing they put a woman in charge of is "Running the House"

The Repubs placed a woman on their committee, but it's nothing more than lip-service. Repub women, unfortunately, all look the same and only have a say as long as they're following the Repub ideologies.

The voters elected Obama as president, but it's nothing more than lip-service!

Other voters tried to make the pathological liar Romney president, and it was nothing more than complete and utter stupidity.

WOW! A token woman! Now they can appoint a token black. Oh wait -- there aren't any black republicans . . .or young republicans . . . or hispanic republicans. Otherwise, they wouldn't all be Old White Men.

The Tea Beggers are confused about many issues, and they have no sense of reality. The GOP/Tea Beggers are Biologically confused, sexually confused, morally confused, ethically confused, and very intolerant towards others. It is obvious that the Tea Beggers do not how the body of a women works, and the have no clue what "Reproductive Rights" are. Now like their failed hero "Romulian Romney." They like hiding in their quietrooms, and they do not let women in. Why? In the "House of Bonehead Boehner." He likes to only have white men around. Why? Now this is just scary America!

I guess this is why I'm a conservative. The left has a need to categorize people by race, gender, sexual preference, etc. Instead of qualifications and the content of their character. Does the right need to count and track how many blacks, hispanics and gays are on their committees? What about short people? Or bald people? Should they have arm bands?

So, answer me this - WHY did it take any criticism at all to make them realize that they needed to include ALL to their club? WHY is it that they think that only white men are eligible and able? After all, women are the majority in this country AND this country is made up of more than white males.

WHY are ONLY white males eligible in the GOP leadership?

They're not. You should stop listening to Martin Bashir for a while..

I don't listen to Bashir. However, when you look at the posts for >30 years, I still ask the question - WHY are ONLY white males eligible in the GOP leadership, even tho there have been QUALIFIED female GOP members of Congress?

The reason they lost is staring back at them in the mirror.

btw - the information is available for ALL to see in the Congressional Record. All you have to do is ask for it.

The Republicans are 20-30 year throw backs. Not unlike Corporate America at that time when women board members (if any) were in charge of Admin or Personnel.

Boehner and crew really look bad again.

With a CORP PROFIT this year alone of $1,750,000,000,000,00.

                      a National debt of $16,334,272,216,889.80

This Equates to .9333869838223 % of just the profits they made is that really worth worrying about vs the overall might of the economy as a whole?

5 terms in Congress, she may well be qualified for committee leadership, but she shouldn't be assigned just because she is a woman, or should she be denied such a position.

I have known a few American Marxists , Many Democrats ,a reasonable amount of Liberal Democrats, I am one myself but I have not even heard of an American Democratic Marxist. Not being contemptuous but I was of the opinion that Marxists did not believe in the two party system. Not that I am interested in your political philosophy but I would like to know if I am incorrect in my comment.

Can NBC put out anything, ever, without its dem/lib slant and objective feminism or objective racism undertones? In charge of paper cups? Really? Only put her there because she was a woman? Really? Ok, so they just downgraded this "woman" to a little pawn taking care of cups. All this negative crap really needs to stop in the media.

It's the "House Administration" committee. Do you seriously think she was put there for any other reason? How about Appropriations or some other major committee? Not one Republican woman has ever headed a major committee? Ever? And this is the one they chose? "House Administration"?

Instead of binders full of women we now have a woman in charge of buying the binders for the (Congress)Men to put women in...obviously the Speaker needs the binders in order to find more women qualified for House leadership positions...sounds like the same problem Willard (AKA Mitt) had.
