After criticism, GOP adds woman to chair House committee

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Lack of diversity has been an issue for the GOP, and many strategists believe that the party’s problems with women and minorities led to President Obama’s re-election.

Miller has been in Congress since 2003, and her highest committee level post is on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

There is Little doubt that to solve the debt issue taxes on everyone will have to be raised and spending will need to be cut. I propose that the Republicans bit the bullet and allow all tax rates to expire and then deal with the resulting mess with more leverage. They can then offer modest tax cuts for lower and middle income taxpayers in exchange for considerable spending cuts. If the Dems don't go along with the spending cuts then they would be holding tax payers hostage to protect their big government cronies. The republicans might get the blame for a few months but if they introduced immediate bills to lower taxes on the middle class with spending cuts as the offset the narrative would rapidly change.

Won't work. A trillion dollars of spending cuts go in effect on Jan 1st and 500 million is in defence. Neary all of this will occur in republican states. the president has all the leverage now and later. The president will send a tax cut for the 98% to congress in Jan if they go over the cliff and they won't be able to turn it down. The best offer the republicans will get is before they go over the cliff.

The Democrats voted for over one trillion dollars in spending cuts last year, with nary a tax increase in sight. It would be great if the Republicans remembered that. In other words, it'd be terrific if the media reminded them...the way they "reminded" them they hadn't put a woman in charge of a committee.

Right after this announcement Candice Miller announced she was of black Latino heritage and a transgendered lesbian. She and Boehner now expect the republicans to have solved the republican image problem.

The GOP isn't a party of leaders. They haven't been for a long time. Instead, it's a party where a select few leaders expect their followers to keep in line with their marching orders, regardless of their misguided and maligned nature.

The party not only suffers from a lack of diversity, but also rudimentary progress and dumb foresight for having failed to name a woman to a leadership post until the public outcry forced their hand.

It tells an even bigger story that other minority members of the party didn't get a nod to leadership posts, which amounts to more squandered opportunities to attract new support for the party.

Oh my, Candice will have a big job ahead...just not the one bonehead Boehner thinks it is. Her real job will be to bring these Neanderthal men to their senses. What's amazing is how unaware they are of how stupid they come across.

        White Collar:

"Yet Democrats worked long and hard to replace Mia Love and Allen West with two white guys and nobody seemed to care.........."

Oh, we cared--many of us, including me, fought hard and donated money to get Allen West out of office, because it isn't about minority status.

You stated the Republican position perfectly, though. And until you understand that it isn't about race or gender or ethnicity, you won't understand that it's about the people. People of any race, gender, and ethnicity. Democrats have more minority members because they accept all Americans.

Republicans see minorities as a list of things to check off. Presidential ad with Spanish subtitles? Check. Hispanic governor at rallies? Check. Gay person working on campaign? Fire 'em! Female minority governor endorsing white guy from behind a podium? Double-check. Brown faces behind speakers at convention? Check.

Crap--we forgot to put a woman in charge of a committe! Fix that!

        Woman chairing a committee? Check.

You have almost as many people in your district that dont think like you. Is it ok....not to think like you? I mean I know more then a handful of progressive liberals that havent the time of day for someone that dosent beleive what they believe. And about all of them "uncle Tom'ed" Mr.West. I personally think the republicans should voite Present and let Mr. Obama drive his OWN economy. Put it in gear and double down...... if you beleive......you beleive, Right?

Of course she knows she it a token for the Greedy Old Pharts (GOP) frat house. She is the house mother taking care of her frat boys and making sure the tanning bulbs are changed for Boner so he can keep his tan even. I bet she is seething with contempt for her frat boys.

So the GOP decided to add a token woman in a chairmanship. Real progress there guys. Though the photo of her that I saw shows she's lily white so they're not straying too far from the typical party member.

Evolution and natural selection trump the silliness that human beings are created equal. All men and all women are created unequal.

Republicans are such idiots. Why don't they ever stand up for their ideals....like everyone is created equal? Instead, they come off looking like idiots because they are trying to play the gender/race card. The reason why the democrats win is because republicans always back down when they are put in the corner. Fight for once. Stand up for each other. Actually believe in something. Instead, we get etch-a-sketch.
