After criticism, GOP adds woman to chair House committee

After enduring negative headlines that all of the House Republican committee chairmanships will be filled by men in the next Congress, Republicans have found their woman.

NBC News has learned that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will be named chair of the House Administration Committee. Miller did not serve on the committee during the 112th Congress.

Lack of diversity has been an issue for the GOP, and many strategists believe that the party’s problems with women and minorities led to President Obama’s re-election.

Miller has been in Congress since 2003, and her highest committee level post is on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The House Administration Committee deals with the pertinent administrative business of the House. The committee can decide such mundane things as whether or not the House cafeterias will use paper or Styrofoam plates -- or more serious matters such as benefit packages for congressional workers and how the Library of Congress operates. The Committee also monitors the expense accounts of House members.

House Speaker John Boehner issued this statement: “From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee. In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents. And her experience as Michigan secretary of state will be invaluable given the committee’s oversight of campaign finance and election laws.

WCA:

You must weigh many hundreds of pounds, because bucko, you are always out to lunch. Mia Love ran for office in a state - Utah - which has just a hint of Mormon to it. You know, Mormons, the folks who only recently started pretending that people with dark skin are human beings.

Allen West is completely off his rocker, which, while generally a plus for a right-winger is not necessarily viewed as a desirable attribute by sane and reasonable folks.

You are wrong when you say that nobody seemed to care. Obviously, a majority cared enough to elect Democrats. Grow up. Stop whining.

During the 108th Congress, Miller was admonished by the House Ethics Committee for improperly attempting to influence the vote of fellow Michigan Congressman Nick Smith on a Medicare vote. "The subcommittee released a 62-page report... that admonished Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) for possibly breaking House rules by offering support for Smith's son in exchange for a vote and threatening retaliation if Smith did not vote for the Medicare bill.

The GOP still doesn't get it. After losing 77% of the women vote, they nominated 19 males for open committee positions and not a single female. Only after this issue was highlighted in the national media they so much hate, have they come to their senses and picked a token.

They aren't fooling anyone. The party will never change. It will die and be remembered as the party of the old angry white man.

Okay, so you got called out on your portrait of old white men you really wanted on all your committees. They are your picks and I seriously doubt if it occurred to you to put a woman in any of the slots. Don't you guys think the public got your message? Adding a woman for the administration committee? Is that where you really think she fits best or will she have some girlie duties of paper-pushing that seems appropriate to you for all her womanliness? Let's be honest. You didn't think of her, don't want her there, and she is your token skirt.

Seriously, do you think we are all dense and that we will nod with a smile at you now....ahh, all better and now they like and respect women. The truth is that it doesn't occur to most of them to consider a woman for a position of power. Just be honest. You like your groups all white men when it involves power and prestige...it is a bit obvious that is who you are there to lobby for, and not seeing that this is a problem is what the problem is in the first place.

"their pick (pun intended) had to meet 3 criteria .. woman, Black, and Latino."---All the Repubs had to do was to find Aretha Gonzalez. A Hispanic surname, black female. By the way, she is 1/8 Native-American, a lesbian, and an partially-disabled Iraq War veteran. Overnight the Repubs would become the party of diversity!!

Just one woman amongst all those men and still no token minorities in their committee lineup, eh? When pushed, is that the best they can do?

They definitely don't represent a sampling of America's population, but it does reflect the conservative Republican view of what kind of people they want ruling the U.S., and that's a rule by only one, very narrow demographic.

Considering that's the best they can do, it seems like the GOP Tea Party wants to make themselves go the way of the Whig Party when elections come about again in 2014 and 2016, and sooner, rather than much, much later.

Ster2: Funny guy. Republicans are the fathers of HATE: they even hate their own kind, evidenced by the way that the tea party nuts denounced and then politically murder the moderate Republicans in their party (for even DARING to state that they could “compromise”). That hate is also evidenced in the term they use for 'non-believers': RINO (Republican in Name Only). This isn’t a ‘red dog/blue dog’ term – it means someone who is ‘destroying the party from within’ and that ‘isn’t a true believer’ of the faith. I can’t think of any terms that the Indys or the Dems have to describe their own party members like this: but then, they usually don’t engage in that kind of self-destructive behavior.

Tell me again where the hate originates when the moderate Republicans (which are currently the reason behind the rise in the number of Independents in the US) cannot be allowed to stand amongst their OWN. Your “Moral Majority” is fast becoming a Moronic Minority.

And the reason is this: Hate, by its own nature, consumes itself.

Welcome, Ms. Miller

From the article above:

In her new post, Candice will provide the leadership needed to keep operating costs down, save taxpayer dollars, and help lawmakers use new technology to better engage with their constituents.

To reiterate: Use new technology to better engage with their constituents.

Does that mean Twitter and Facebook?

Or are the Republicans still using My Space and a Town Crier?

Good to see the Republicans becoming more diverse.

Now, if they can replace McCain, Graham and other life-time politicians with more diversity, then that's a good thing.

So the Congressional representative from my district now has a meaningful job. Well, good for her. She sure as hell doesn't do much around here. Might as well earn the taxpayers money and all of the benefits that go with it. I would love to see her replaced, but like an old piece of furniture, they just keep her around because the voters are used to her. Kind of crazy when all of the reptards scream about term limits, yet they have just as many or more dinosaurs in Washington than the Dems do.

--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."--Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998 "He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
--Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

Cuz SHE'S not a fake blonde bimbo airhead (I'm blonde, forgive the remark please) And I SURE think that every woman out there should RUN not walk to the voting booth and INSTANTANEOUSLY be raped to PROVE that she didn't WANT to be raped by NOT getting pregnant. How STOOPID of women to not want MEN to make laws that involve WOMEN'S reproductive body parts and who promote VIAGRA up the ying yang. RAPE EM BOYS! You'll see! they WANT it that way. Just one guy: ummm there are DOZENS of letters DAILY to each president of our U.S. of A that URGE war upon some country (multiples of them) for a myriad of reasons. Just because a president receives a letter does NOT preclude his action upon it. And it is HIGHLY interesting that you completely "forgot" the whole REAGAN era part and then the subsequent BUSH part in the Iraq debacle. No... not Boy George but his DADDY. AND you forget that Clinton ALSO had information that was NOT passed on to Congress in the form of a B.S. book about how the weapons of mass destruction were being amassed against them. Clinton actually got INTELLIGENCE which is why he did NOT commit a war, and let's not forget the Halliburton part in the entire mess who had MAJOR motives to lie about the intelligence their hired hit men "collected" just so Halliburton could own the entire electric rights for a country. and WHO loved Halliburton? oh was that Cheney? nahhhh just forget the ENTIRE story, you're right, Iraq was ALL Clinton's fault.

Jstoneguy, so the terror attacks on the WTC were Clinton's fault because he told Junior that there was no threat. And now the Iraq war was all Clinton's fault because he told Junior that they were going to attack us. So 2 questions: First, wouldn't it have been better for Junior to get his own info and try to find some intelligence (maybe he did try but was unable). Second, after Clinton was so clearly wrong on the first part, shouldn't Junior have maybe thought he could be wrong on the second? I understand there is a lack of intelligence in the Republican party but to take the predecessor's word on foreign policy instead of finding your own information is at best irresponsible. And if Junior did get his own info then maybe you can stop trying to put it all on Clinton.

LA99999, we cannot forget Junior's first speech concerning Iran and war. Junior opened with the statement he was going after Hussein because he tried to kill his daddy. This was the real reason for Junior going after Iran not mention the money Haliburtion, Cheney et al, would be raking in from the war. Herein lies the truth of the war Junior started. We have to ask why Senior did not march on Baghdad. He knew it would throw the country into disarray which would cause a collapse of the entire social fabric of the country providing an opportunity for the extremists to move in. Simple psychology.

Regarding the article... when the GOP starts treating people as people and not as "after thoughts", they may become viable again. When I was Republican they at least stood for fiscal responsibility... although history says they did little to practice it. In those days their demographic profile was business... now it's "the old way of doing business" at the exclusion of everyone not meeting their "club" criteria.

So they think popping a woman into a propped-up position solves their exclusionary appearance? It doesn't. They are still exclusionary in practice.

LMarcT, it's a shame because I would probably vote conservative more often than not if they got back to their principals. Although I am more liberal socially and I think most are, I think the fiscal agenda would trump the social issues. The problem is their social issues aren't conservative, they are extreme. And their fiscal plan is all talk, as has been proven the last 3 decades. So we are left with deciding between a fiscally irresponsible party that is socially responsible or a fiscally irresponsible party that wants to take us back decades to the good old days when minorities were equal, as long as they kept to themselves and knew their place, and women were appreciated only when being subservient to their men. And they wonder why they were beaten.

Let's see- why not at least 3 more women and a number of minorities? Oh wait - their little heads would explode!!!! Actually - that would NOT be a loss!

Well, for a start you've got Lamar Smith, who's heading up the House Science and Technology committee.

He's a Christian Scientist, and believes that disease happens solely because of sin and can only be healed through prayer. He was the author of the SOPA bill, which would have heavily censored the Internet, and just last year introduced a bill that advocated ISPs keep a record of all their customers' activities on the Internet for at least a year, just in case law enforcement should ever want that information without having to go to the inconvenience of getting a warrant.

And yet he's still better than the last head, Ralph Hall, who is a global warming denier. Oh, Republicans.

Lil Michelle, ram and any others who object: its humor.

Seriously, if we can start the thread by saying that President Obama is a token, why can't we keep up the humor. After all, the appointment of ONE woman to be in charge of a Committee, and it happens to be the "office supplies committee" just shows how much of a joke the Republican party really is.

Oh well, hopefully by 2017, the Democratic Speaker, the President and possibly the Senate Majority leader will all be women. Maybe then we can balance the budget and get out of the war business too.

You want to talk about a token – a Republican token --- try Michael Steele. Remember him? After Republicans got stomped in the 2008 election, they decided to show how much they welcomed blacks into their party and appointed a black guy -- Michael Steele – as Chairman of the RNC. During his two year term as Chairman, more Republicans were elected to office nationwide than during any two year period in the history of the Republican Party. So how did Republicans reword Mr. Steele for his outstanding success --- they FIRED him.

The problem isn't that he achieved things,it's what he achieved. He ignored terror warnings and we had 9/11. He took a budget surplus, that was beginning to pay off our debt. And through his spending brought us massively in the hole. He brought on two wars. One he mismanaged totally (Afghanistan),the other he lied to get us in (Iraq). And all the deaths and injuries to Americans and Iraqi's are on his hands He and his advisers disgraced our country before the whole world. And it has taken Obama 4 years to bring back goodwill from the world again. He left our country in the worst economic collapse since the great depression of the 1930's. So,you see it matters not that a President "achieves" things. But what they achieve instead.

I also love how y'all only picked up on one part of the committee she was given, she's also taking control of the checkbook (as most of us women do) I'm willing to bet money that spending will go way down because of it.

The problem with the Republicans is not whether they have a couple of women,or minorities in their leadership. Its that they don't believe in women's or minority issues. Its their ideology that is their problem with those groups. Taking a woman from another committee. One where she tried to get that committee chairmanship and was denied. Move her to another committee, just so they could give her a committee chairmanship to look like their believed in diversity. Its a total fail, they made themselves even look worse.

I already wondered during the McCain efforts how the HELL the GOP came up with Palin when they have a FABULOUS (albeit short) list of women they could have put up as Veep running mate. I wanted DESPERATELY for the party to come up with ANYONE who didn't think a wink, a bat of the eyes and some of the UTMOST stupid talking points would boost the vote. NOW instead of really THINKING out the valid point that many republicans AND U.S. citizens are complaining about, and admitting it's a problem, and addressing it coolly, calmly and with INTELLIGENCE... REALLY?!?! you put her in charge of "one of the most important" duties of making sure Congress doesn't get caught with it's pants down in the loo. Making sure the coffee is stocked, and the Congressional runners have enough wanter and sneakers to keep up their marathon. If I were Michelle, (PLEASE hear this!) I'd go on a personal one woman strike. LET them bring their OWN TP. (no one remarks that this is at taxpayer expense by the way, let's just attack those who are in need of food) and let them bring their OWN pens and pencils. Let them pay their OWN secretaries and worker's benefits like small business and big business alike has to. Michelle, SHOW them you're smarter than they're allowing you to be, and YES it's a matter of what they're giving you PERMISSION to do. Cuz you have breastesses.

From the many gaffs that the Republican Party are committing ,as well as the huge mistake of aligning with the Tea Party far right of somewhere ,I wonder if their leaders if they have any, have lost even a modicum of reality. I admit that as a Liberal Democrat I can not see how their support from any working person could exist , but admit that it does, although I feel that they are loosing more at each election. They are either underestimating the mental capabilities of their employers or are overestimating their abilities to hoodwink the electorate

another one who doesn't even understand the phrase they're using. Geez. Affirmative action: taking a person SOLELY based on a diversity quota in place of the top qualified candidate. We got the top qualified candidate. Running a gov't is NOT the same as running a businness. I sure as hell didn't want Romney running around bankrupting and shutting down state governments while he pocketed billions for it.

While I didn't vote for Romney Echoe, I do have to say there's already city governments going bankrupt and those officials are more likely then not pocketing millions. Seems that it's happening regardless of what letter is in the white house.

And I am sure that she will be expected to wear the June Cleaver tidy little apron and wear her single strand pearls and high heels while sorting the Styrofoam cups and pressing the GOPTeaBag men's suits to ensure they are properly dressed. Plus, make sure that their lunch's ready and served on time every day, even weekends.

I know that GOPTeaBag women are not supposed to think for themselves, that is obviously a requirement for all female GOPTeaBag candidates, but, if if were me, I would have told them to take the job and stick it where their brains are, that being where the sun don't shine, rather than letting them make a total fool of me by being selected as their token woman, and being even further insulted by being assigned to the housekeeping committee.

Ms. Miller obviously has no self-respect, nor bothered by the fact that no one else in her party has any respect for her. All that matters to them is that she has white skin. That says a great deal about the importance of her job, the qualifications of those members of their party and who serve on their committees.

But, there will be likely be few who will try to get her into the linen closet.

Tink.. I'd only disagree on ONE point. All the women are expected to hike their dresses because MEN bring home the money and MEN need it more than any woman needs it. By golly if a man brings home the bacon, he getst to stuff the pork! or cow.. or whatever seems appropriate for the GOP line of thinking anymore. Note to GOP: the U.S. is made up of MORE than 50% women. Kinda works in your favor not to piss them all off.

Yes the history of the two political parties is truly stellar in their treatment of women.

Women are the majority population and registered voter-wise, yet are still less than 25% of our elected officials...

Democrats are better, but that really isn't saying much. 100 years after the Women's Suffrage movement was finally vindicated, women are still 2nd class citizens politically and electorally in America.

The problem for the GOP is that they can't find intelligent women to run for office as a Republican.

The intelligent women know better than to join the GOP.

That does make it kind of hard to find intelligent women to be chairman of the various committees.

How about Michelle Bachman for Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee ?

The thing about stupidity is that it can't recognize intelligence. That's why it's stupidity. It always takes the more intelligent to move the less intelligent ahead because they lack the ability to understand cause and effect. The behavior of this group of Republicans proves how dim their mental lightbulbs shine.

There are actually intelligent women in the republican party (they're getting fewer and farther between) BUT then it popped into my head: Why Echoe, Bachman can see smart people from her backyard! That makes her a VERY viable appointee recommendation to the Intelligence Committee.

The binder was too thick to read through.. they used a piece of gum hanging from a chain of paper clips to divine who they should pick. if they had a cotton picking committe a black man would have gotten that. When they get a chili committee they're be sure to put in a 100% hispanic Frijole. Never let it be said the GOP is discriminatory! They hate EVERYONE who isn't white and male.

She has been given the equivalent of Administrative Assistant, or Secretary, to the HOR. Huge step forward. What a bunch of jerks! If I were her, I would tell Boehner to stick his committee chairmanship where the sun don't shine.

I guess it took this long to go through Mitt's binders full of women to get one that could be chair.

Honestly, why bother at this point? It will be seen for what it is - a cynical, token gesture at something which the GOP does not believe in, i.e. equality for women.

                      What a disgrace.

Really? What has your party done for women's equality?

Absolutely nothing. They do it for themselves in our party.

Spoken like a true GOPTeaBag. Their party women have to do it all themselves, because the men in their party are so inept they can't find their own a$$, even with both hands, a flashlight and a map.

Fine Tink. I think you missed the point. I am a Democrat. In the Demoscratic party we trust our women to dothings. Unlike the people you mentioned.

SpokaneWA - Sorry if I misunderstood. But, there was nothing in your response that gave any indication that you were a Democrat, or that your intention was meant as a compliment, not an insult to women.

Sorry Tink, but I thought Spokane made it very clear when in context of the post right before. Very well put Spokane.

That's not fair, Patriotic. They do love their women, not to mention other people's women. Just as long as the women know their place.
