White House 'surprised' by GOP 'surprise'

Republicans should not be surprised at the fiscal proposal they received from the White House last night, White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, as President Barack Obama has been highlighting the same position on the campaign trail for the past year.

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss a week that was largely a repeat of past weeks where the conversation continued to swirl around Susan Rice, the Fiscal Cliff and the post-mortem of the 2012 election.

“I was surprised that they were surprised,” Earnest told reporters traveling on Air Force One for the president’s trip to Hatfield, Pa., where he’ll talk about his tax and budget priorities.

Thursday night, Republicans called the White House’s proposal, submitted by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, “a complete break from reality,” citing the White House’s starting line of $1.6 trillion in additional revenue, which they say is twice as much as what was on the table in 2011.

Earnest said figure reflects the goals of higher taxes on the wealthy that the president articulated on the campaign trail.

“The marker that was presented in the context of the balanced approach deficit reduction the president advocated in the campaign was $1.6 trillion in tax revenue,” he said.

Now that the Repukes are involved, no talk of compromise..Norquist will not allow it and he stations Cantor next to Boehner to make sure of that. It is apparent that Obama must stand tall and let the country go over the cliff.

The Repukes will not play ball...nor help their friends and voters. They will only listen to Norquist. a traitor.

Sure in 2006 the last time Bush had control of the House and Budget the Deficit was 380 Billion in 2008 under Pelosi is was over 400 Billion and then in 2009 thur 2012 under Owebama it was over 1.5 Trillion on average each year!

K1200RS==So tell me what the elections changed? We still have the worse president in modern times in the White House with is same demands tax the rich. Nothing has changed and nothing will change. Let me leave you to ponder this, Obama and the Democrats agreed with the Republicans to have these drastic cuts if they could not come up with an agreement. This was their to punish themselves if they could not come up with a solution. The all agreed to this so blame all of them or none of them. Regardless of what they do it will not be them the will have to pay dearly, either way it goes it will be the American Tax Payers. Are you a Tax Payer or an illegal immigrant because illegal immigrants pay for none of this.

Smokie- did I dream that for the last 12 months Obama has been saying raise the RATES on the top 2% and was he elected with a majority of the popular vote and a landslide in the electoral college along with polling showing a 60%+ of the public in favor of raising the Rates or was I dreaming.

Elections do have consequence except for RepubliCONS judging by your actions.

demtothebone===Wait, Obama won by only 3% of the popular vote. No mater what the Electoral College did or has done it has nothing to do with the popular vote. The American People are just as nearly split as they were before the election, so nothing has really changed. The consequences of this election is still about 50/50 on any given mater. Obama doesn't have a landslide on anything but his ideas and they are they same ones he had last term. He has nothing else but tax the rich. This term will be like the last one, no budgets from the Democrats, no plans, plenty campaign trips and last minute decisions that have not worked out to well for us. Just look at these screwed up agreements from Obama's last term. Gridlock once again Republicans still own the House.

K1200RS==You must have fallen off that bike and hit your head. No mater what faces are changed come January 1 we still have a Congress divided and a White House with a goof-ball sitting in it. The new faces will change very little. I do think that Obama will lose on this one because he has no other plan other than taxing the rich. Are you rich? How about, do you like Bill Clinton? Because if these agreed to cuts, by both parties, happen we will be right back to Bill Clinton's Tax Increases. I hope you are real young because any amount of taxes you pay for the rest of your little life are spent already.

The President also said to use Simpson Bowles as a starting point, that we have to lower corporate taxes and close loopholes, and says he offered $4.00 in spending cuts to every $1.00 in increased revenues. He has now gone back on each of those points, instead he wants increase taxes on the top 2% which would raise $750 billion and another $1 trillion from we do not know where.

when Bush became Pres in 2000 he inherited a Dot Com crash and the shoddy intelligence in place under Clinton. Clinton enjoyed the benefits of 8 years of Reagan and 4 with Sr. The Cold War ended so Clinton was able to wind down military spending. Also our economy was the top dog with a thing called the Internet and Emails never heard of before my American prior to the Clinton years. You would have to try real hard to wreck the prosperity of America in the 90's Clinton had absolutely nothing to do with it? he inherited it and it took Gingrich and the Republicans to convince Clinton to balance the budget. Those are the facts I know the Liberals think Clinton was/is the messiah, but he inherited America's prosperity!

Well you are right all the freebies cannot continue in present form (medicaid, welfare, food stamps and corporate welfare). As far as medicaid is concerned I am for reducing it to cover only children, the disabled and the elderly no one else. Welfare and food stamps should be reduced 20% and corporate welfare should be eliminated all together this means no more agri, oil, ethanol, etc subsidies and tax breaks. Medicare & SS are not included as they are funded separately. I am also for cutting the military we don't need to spend 700 bil a year for it this is no longer the cold war era.

gdale, I am in total agreement with what you've written but I'm not on board with the subsidies.. Cutting those subsidies will affect the elderly, children, disabled and poor. The third highest subsidy dollar goes to the home heating oil for all of the groups I've mentioned. President Obama and the GOP tried to cut oil subsides (it was a sticking point of the taxpayers at that time) and the biggest screamers were the Democrats. Especially John Kerry. Most, if not all, of the b!tchers, that wrote letters to Obama, were from predominately New England blue states. Basically they told him to get his grubby hands off those subsidies.

I'm not totally on board with your military cuts either. I believe defense is a constitutional necessity. What I do agree with is that military spending needs to be cut.. Remember when the DoD was purchasing hammers for hundreds of dollars? That's what I'm talking about. And it's not only the DoD that needs to clean up, there are a few other departments that need to adjust their budgets as well. Whatever happened to that "line by line" veto pen pledge??

I'm with you on the Medicaid and food stamp (SNAP) cuts. But it will never happen!! Due to the passage of ACA and it now being "the law of the land" Medicaid is about to explode.. And SNAP will never be brought under control until they start controlling what food items can be purchased. It is very disheartening to watch people, who may or may not be in need, purchase 4 cases of Pepsi and Mountain Dew with their EBT cards. Yet, congress can write and sign into law a bill that limits what our children can and can't have served on their lunch trays.

Paul w you are wrong on the mandate. Its definition is: a mandate is the authority granted by a constituency to act as its representative and the president did win the election with a majority.

Paul - "You JUST BARELY WON".

Yeah, but we did, and that makes you the loser. It doesn't matter if it was by a single vote, you still lost, and the rules are quite clear about what happens to the loser - deal with it.

If you don't like losing, next time try a platform that doesn't tell half of the country that they have no value.

We don't even know who is calling the shots over on the Republican side of the cliff! As far as most Americans know, it is probably Rush Limbaugh, Rince Priebus, and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell,

John Boehner is unwilling, or unable, to clarify what loopholes or programs Republicans are willing to cut, which makes it seem like Republicans don't have any plan other than the continued efforts to hold our economy hostage as long as Republicans hold the majority in the House of Representatives and have the power to filibuster every bill in the Senate to block all efforts by Democrats and Independents to pass useful legislation, with the result that nothing gets to the President's desk, so President Obama can sign it into law!

This is just another replay of the last four years, that Americans must continue to suffer under until we finally remove the Republican scourge from the leadership of the House of Representatives altogether.

John Boehner is trying to convince Americans that President Obama refuses to put anything on the table, but Obama has been clear he is willing to cut wasteful parts of Medicare funding, as well as many defense department programs that the pentagon says are unnecessary. There is plenty of clarity on the Democratic side of the aisle, but refusal to negotiate in good faith are the Republicans, like a squeaky wheel on a wagon, who forgot to bring grease along to fix it, but won't stop their wagon or their lies, and would prefer to hear the same squeaky sound over and over again, until the wheel falls off and our nation hits the skids, along with their wagon! Americans should retire the Republicans and the wagon they rode in on!

Obama has been clear on only one thing regarding this particular issue, and it's his "proposal," which is nothing more than the SAME BUDGET that even his own people voted against.

Jesus said for the rich man to give every thing he had away to help the poor.

He also used tax collectors as prime examples of those who were hated by everyone. You should try to actually read the Bible.

                                                            Christ taught charity.

He also said it was not charity if given at the tip of a spear.

You still haven't said how he felt about tax collectors.

Everything Obama is doing is hurting job creation and business.

The more people out of work......the less taxes they pay....

The President does not have any special mandate..if anything it is less than it was in 2008. Also the Republicans do not have a mandate as well. The President said these are the consequences of the Election ...well the American people voted for the Republican House again as well. He has to look at the consequences and work with it as well.

I want all the tax rates to expire... I want everybody who post on this page to pony up and pay their fair share! If the President does not want a balanced approach and compromise...then lets see where his great Leadership takes us.

It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

Later references to the quote specify that it's from the book "The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic" by Alexander Fraser Tytler. No record of that book can be found, and nobody can find any other work by Tytler with the quotation.

That proposal included $1.6 trillion in tax increases, $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs, and ending Congress' control of the debt limit.

Throw your party allegiance to the wind, cross the aisle, now look up opensecrets dot org and look at the Net Worth on both sides and you'll begin to see where your beloved Congress has set their allegiance. They win, you lose! So now the question becomes "what are YOU doing to set your fiscal house in order as medical premiums increase, taxes increase, food prices sky rocket, cost of fuel increases, unemployment increases, employers start laying off personnel, etc..etc..??" This is not about the President v. Speaker of the House, or you or I, it's simply about wealth and greed inside the political arenas. Tax reform, you're kidding right? They're not about to rob themselves of their own wealth. Prepare for a tax increase to the wealthy with tax loop holes intact, increased government spending, and kicking the ole can down the road. No politician is interested in doing the right thing for this nation.
