Subscribe to RSSRepublicans should not be surprised at the fiscal proposal they received from the White House last night, White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, as President Barack Obama has been highlighting the same position on the campaign trail for the past year.
NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss a week that was largely a repeat of past weeks where the conversation continued to swirl around Susan Rice, the Fiscal Cliff and the post-mortem of the 2012 election.
“I was surprised that they were surprised,” Earnest told reporters traveling on Air Force One for the president’s trip to Hatfield, Pa., where he’ll talk about his tax and budget priorities.

Thursday night, Republicans called the White House’s proposal, submitted by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, “a complete break from reality,” citing the White House’s starting line of $1.6 trillion in additional revenue, which they say is twice as much as what was on the table in 2011.
Earnest said figure reflects the goals of higher taxes on the wealthy that the president articulated on the campaign trail.
“The marker that was presented in the context of the balanced approach deficit reduction the president advocated in the campaign was $1.6 trillion in tax revenue,” he said.

They are now regrouping for the next attempt to bring about chaos among the people believing they, as I said, will be able to step in and bring order out of chaos. Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler did the same and it worked for a time, but not until Russia and Germany were destroyed. All loyal, patriotic, Americans must begin NOW to demand recall petitions of every member of the far right wing, extremist, fanatical terrorists in Congress and replace them with rational, center, representatives who are willing to sit down and work through the nation's problems!

I'm actually with Andrea Tantaros on this one. Let the left submit their proposal. Vote present. Then they own it. If it succeeds (fat chance) then the right has to eat crow. If it fails, repubs didn't vote for it and didn't oppose it. The left owns it. Anyone on the left want to take complete ownership?
Maybe, just maybe then the democratic senate would do their constitutional duty and pass a budget. Obama has at least proposed one (defeated 99-0 regularly)... I don't think the left has enough of a pair to take ownership of the economy and unfortunately, the right doesn't have enough of a pair to vote present.

The President has all the leverage this time around and this time he isnt going to let the oldguard Republicans keep thier precious tax cuts. Those tax cuts were only supposed to be temporary to begin with but once they got them they dont want to let them go. Time is up Richy Rich. The people of this nation have spoken and either do what we say or get the F out of the way.
Just don't be surprised when you get LAYED OFF! I will pay higher taxes I know that. But where do you think I'm going to get the money to pay those taxes? My employees! no raises, less hours, etc... I'll be fine, unfortunately some of the people working for me that make under $30K will suffer even more. As a business owner I must stay afloat, employees not so much. I have no choice, I either take a huge hit or I pass it along. I continue to pay for my kids college or I help pay for employees benifits. Sorry fact of life. All you Obama supporters will probably blame me which only underscores just how much dems know about business.

For the first two years the republicans did absolutly nothing but said no. They are are ones that got us into this mess. They have no problem putting two wars on the credit card, but help the poor and middle class, they do not worry about them.
They have no problem running to Grover Norquest and signing his no tax pledge, but again helping the poor and middle class they say no.
Everyone needs to bite the bullet and shut up and do there job to fix our problems or hand in your reginaton.
This election proved that big money cannot control everything. People need to realize that for all that big money that those people gave, they want something in return. This kind of stuff needs to stop.

I just wanted to voice my opinion on the economy as a whole. I think the whole problem with the economy cannot be completley blamed on Democrats or Republicans, but we as a people can take a lot of this blame. Our economy is screwed because US citzens are lazy and have become dependent on the government. I own a small business and I am by no means rich and I am hiring right now. I think I pay pretty decent but I cannot find someone to fill the jobs I have available. The main reason is the people of this country are more content sitting around doing nothing then going to the unemployment and welfare office and getting a check for free. And yes I do blame part of that on Obama who has increased funding to those programs. For those who say there are no jobs out there, they must be crazy. I go to dunkin donuts every morning for coffee and for the past 6 months there has been a help wanted sign. Is this a dream job? Of course it isnt, but it is a job. I was talking to my grandfather who is from Philadelphia who said that people who hit hard times back in the day would not go to the welfare office, they would find a way to make money and support thier family. I personally would be embarrased if my friends and family found out I was on welfare. However most people do not think this, they have become dependent on the goverment. Again in my opinion a lot of problems in this economy are because of us, the american people. Our economy is going to keep going downhill until this is fixed. There needs to be a way to decrease goverment dependency. Increasing taxes to the rich is not going to do anything because we keep pumping money into programs that do not work ie: Welfare. It is a viscious cycle that has to be stopped before we can see this economy change. Please let me know what you think, this is just my opinion but would love to hear you input.
What we have here is a failure to communicate, or the lack of resources within each politicians agenda to cross over and participate in a adult situation with the only agenda that matters, which is keeping America solvent, keeping America strong, keeping America free, the individuals involved at the top are so deep in their own little worlds that they can't seem to be able to relate to the world of the same people who are the blood line of America, US, the people who pay the taxes that pay their salaries, think about how upside down every thing is, we (the tax payer) pay them to screw us royaly, while we vote and complain and put up with the all the bullcrap that is going on. The president was elected to raise taxes on the rich, as little as this does it that is what the people wanted. Everyone to pay their "fair share". The House , who's job it is to control the governments purse strings, was elected to reduce the deficit and bring spending under control ( mostly with much higher percentages of the vote). Both of them are going to have to compromise.
Obama and the democrats could easily bring spending under control without touching medicare and social security by getting rid of baseline budgeting. Why do we increase the entire governments budget every year without reviewing its need? You can't tell me that EVERY agency needs an increase EVERY year. There are agencies we could do without , the GSA for one and the TSA for another. private companies are doing a better job than the TSA and for much less. The GSA should be bringing money in instead of being a money pit. I'm sure there are many other places where things could be cut if not entirely done away with.
If Obama is serious about bringing the deficit under control instead of just increasing spending then he needs to step up and talk with the republicans like Clinton did instead of going on taxpayer funded trips to sell the public something half of them don't want.
You Republicans and Democrats are both to blame for the economic mess we are in. The republicans did not cause the recession and neither did the democrats. If you do your research you will find there is plenty of blame to go around. You have both grown the size of the government trying to push your agendas. Governments job is to grow and expand, Our job as citizens is to keeps it in check. The less the government does TO (not for) us the better off we are. To many of the regulations pushed by both sides are to help individual companies at the detriment to everyone else making it harder for small business to get started and succeed. The Democrats blame the republicans for pushing their views on everyone else but do exactly the same and are even more vitriolic than any republican. Neither of you should be pushing social agendas, the government has no business telling people how to live other than making sure everyone has the same opportunities.

The Clinton years were not trickle down policies. As soon as GWB was elected, trickle down came back, surpluses were given away as tax cuts to the rich, then the Bush Great Recession.
I know it is tough for the GOP to deal with the fact that Obama won, time for reality. Not only that, our President isn't like Romney, he has spoken the truth all through the campaign, not like Romney tried to do keep changing his views in order to buy a vote here or there.

If the rich hadn't kept the money for themselves over the past 30 years and had let some trickle down, maybe the GOP would still be in power.
Unfortunately it's not that simple. As soon as Republicans moved in the direction of increased revenue the President upped the ante by demanding a $50 billion stimulus and authority to unilaterally increase the debt ceiling without Congressional approval. He also now wants discussions on tax reform and spending cuts delayed until next year. Does this sound like good faith negotiating on the President's part?

@ BrentOC as most people of color, we have voted for more whites then non whites in our life time. So you need to question yourself non us. See its nothing to do with color for many of us. I voted for Hillary Clinton during the primary 8 years ago not Obama, after the Convention We all supported Obama. I worked on both Bill Clinton Campaigns. Voting has nothing to do with color, it's about trusting the person you support regardless of race, gender or religion.

Her writing (or was it written by the White House?) proves that she does not see or hear any news that doesn't come from the White House.
If so, she would understand that the "surprise" was that Obama, even after seeing and hearing the resistance to his plan for years and after his statement to "work across the aisle", he came with the same "crap" that was rejected.

Why just the other day I spoke with a friend that voted for Obama and now that the election is over and the reports are coming out on Benghazi (liberal stream media did not report it), the increased costs and taxes due to Obamacare, his spending plans that will likely have a $20 Trillion debt by 2016 and the plan to raise taxes on those making over $178,000 AGI without cutting any spending, they are furious.
They said if they would have known that prior to the election, there is no way they would have voted for him.
Having the "liberal/main stream media" (aka Propaganda Arm of the White House) and the Obama administration hide information from the American public is by no means a free society nor indicative of democracy, let alone a republic (which is what the United States actually is).

The argument is the marginal tax rate for the 2% reverting to the Clinton level for income amounts over $250K. I say let the Bush era tax cuts expire and then the Dems reintroduce their Senate bill continuing the tax breaks for those under $250K and let the Clinton rate apply to ALL the income to those making over $250K. The GOP wouldn't know a good deal if it bit them in the azz.
