Obama, Romney to meet for lunch Thursday

After a long and -- at times -- contentious campaign, President Obama and Mitt Romney sit down together for lunch at the White House on Thursday. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

President Obama and the man he defeated in the 2012 presidential contest -- Republican Mitt Romney -- will have lunch Thursday at the White House, Obama's press secretary announced.

It will be the first meeting since the election's end.

The White House said there will be no press coverage of the meeting.

Romney you are a better man than me because I sure as hell do not want to have lunch with Obama.

I've replied to a few of your previous comments, and I can say with authority that Spongebob Squarepants is a better man than you.  Even most WOMEN are better men than you. My DOG is a better man than you.

It's so unlike the president to seek the counsel of someone honest and respectable I wonder what's up?

"Seek the counsel of someone honest and respectable...", but that doesn't explain why Obama would invite Romney.

Guess he want's to hear more about the Jeep lie or the Welfare lie or Medicare lie or the Obama raising taxes on the middle class lie or the Obama forcing same sex marriage on the enitre country lie. Or maybe how you cut your income by 20%, increase expenses by 2 trillion dollars and reduce the national debt.

Or maybe he just wants to say - good job Mitt. McCain got 46% running an honest campaign and Romney beat that by 1 point with his campaign based on lies, deception and race bating. So the GOP was right to be mad at McCain for refusing to do this.

Mitt has to teach Obama math. He should start with flash cards, move to story problems than end with ethics. Liberals are nervous… The next four years will be a complete disaster, an embarrassment to the left. At least the liberals can stay delusional another four years than who will they blame?

I really don't understand all the negative commets by both sides. I think it is fantastic that the two of them can meet like this, maybe share some ideas on how to move the country forward. Maybe it will show the rest of congress and the senate that two sides really can work together. I think if these two men can have a good meeting, put their heads together, it could be good for America !! Please stop with the party bashing...the election is over. It is time for smart men and women to come together, regardless of party, and get this great country back on track. I think we can all live with that, can't we ?

I voted for the president. I do not believe that Romney was a bad candidate for the Republician Party. I do however believe that the Republicans were bad for/and to Romney.

Instead of all the complaining, lets just hope that the two men can come together as adults and fix all the complaints you people have everyday. If Romney had one way to fix things and Obama has another way. Its gotta work. But if they come into this forum and read the mess and complaining everyone has. Maybe they can say, the hell with it , why because the American people really do not care, They complain all the time and if we fix it, the same complains will come and if we don't the same thing. People lets just hope that all the Jobs Mitt Romney said he had, will help those he wanted to help and let the President do the same for all the rest of us. Just pray that all will work out for the good of everyone.

LOL . . . it is very apparent that some have never gotten over (and beyond) Nov. 6th. LOL

To read that people are STILL coming up with excuses for why the President was reelected and Romney was not, reflects (and really mimics) how some in this country just refuse to move FORWARD!

It's not a question of moving forward. We are continuing to go backwards. Explain to me why my health care is more expensive under Obama care and my health is perfect. Explain why I am getting penalized for being middle class. Explain why I had to shut my business down two-years ago. I am not sure if Romney was the answer. I know Obama is not--he has proven that. I would sure hope we don't have Christie as a president four years from now. Going forward is having a leader who cares about the average American and that we don' have. Sorry to break it to you!

If your health is perfect, your health care cost would be zero. Are you talking about your insurance? Obamacare goes into full effect in 2014. Middle class taxes are the lowest in 50 years in the real world. You had to shut your business 2 years ago because of the worst economic crisis in 80 years in 2008. Join the real world. It isn't as scary as you think.

JimS, you are obviously uneducated or better put only educated by the news. I am actually working with healthcare vendors for our organization and we are setting up the new plans to be in line with Obamacare. Based on your comments you obviously don't know much except for the nice bits and pieces you read in the news.

The one smart thing you said is that middle class taxes are the lowest they have been in 50 years although that number is not exactly correct. But those are going up. If you research your history well enough, in politics, you have to rob Peter to pay Paul. That's reality.

My reality is I used to have a savings and now we live paycheck to paycheck. And yes, 2008 was the worst economic crisis since the 1970s and we still don't have it that bad yet but that was 2008. If the Pres spent more time on trying to fix the economy beyond turning the federal govt into a private equity model, maybe not just you but the average american would be better off.

Wake up JimS. We are all living in reality. Everybody's reality is different. It is not the same for everybody and don't ever try to force your reality on someone else. Unfortunately for me I grew up poor. I worked hard to make something of myself and have an awesome family. I worked hard to get where I was. I wasn't a salesman. I was an engineer working for a major accounting firm and then had my own business for 7 years. That dream was dashed because I couldn't hang off the Obama cliff long enough.

I am glad things are going well for you. I hope it continues to do so. My reality isn't the same as yours unfortunately.

I also think you comment is a classic problem with the US population as a whole. When one person thinks things are okay for them then they want others who are negatively impacted to just shut up. If you want reality, I can share with you the continued shattered dreams of my neighborhood. But no worries, I will let you live in your cloud. I will say that I am grateful we don't have Bush as president anymore. I just wish we would have gotten rid of Obama.

                      • For the most part, Obama-care hasn't even started yet. And it you're like me and everyone I know-- you health insurance cost went up every year long before Obama-care was even talked about.

I did not vote for Obama, and have serious concerns about the next four years. I did vote for Romney, even though I didn't think the Republicans fielded the best candidate, and I had serious concerns about him as well. However, the election is over, and what is done is done. I do think that Obama should give serious consideration to the nearly half of the country who wanted change. I don't think Obama is stupid. He knows that he must address the concerns of the "red states". Now all we need is for the congress to quit bickering and actually pull together to do what is best for the entire country, not just the "blue states". I am not optimistic by nature, but things simply must get better for the United States to ever regain what was once its "world leader" status. Though my faith in the US and its government has been seriously tested, it is still the best place in the world to be.

I could care less who is eating lunch tomorrow. I am an independent, middle class voter with an awesome family and thank goodness I am not like you Dems or GOP. But what I do care about is that there are other middle class like me who are suffering because of all you political fanatics. While you guys have time bicker about your selfish agendas, I am suffering paying for pretty much all of my healthcare because of the new laws. I now pay for all doctor visits because deductibles are now higher and I will probably never get to meet them until I am older. I pay higher premiums on top of paying for all of my health care thanks to Obamacare. We may have to move out of our house thanks to these steep health care costs. I have lost hope.

And then I also have to worry about being racially profiled if I go to Arizona because I am a minority. I have to worry about being taxed in an already bad economy. I have to worry about what earmark is going to be passed because all politicians are lying to me--yes that include Clinton, Bush, Obama and whether it be Christie or some other goofball in the future.

I don't care about who eats lunch tomorrow. I am sick of all you Dems and GOP making this world a worse place to live!

I think anyone who thinks this is a bad idea is a fool. Without being condescending....I am actually kind of proud of him for doing this.

I guess Obama is lowering his standards wanting to have lunch with a tax cheat and felon. Romney should say he wants a public apology for saying those things about him during the campaign. I never heard Romney one time personally attack Obama even though Obama was associated with Rev.(i use that term loosely) Wright and acorn. You people can say what you want but I bet Obama has money in offshore accounts. He never did say he checked his pension to make sure he didnt. Romney talked about policy without attacking Obama personally. Obama fights a dirty fight but I guess that's how you win. Same goes for Biden. I bet Bidens wife has to punch him in the mouth occasionally to shut him up so she can get a word in edgewise.

Some might wonder if President Obama has pride, dignity, confidence and self esteem? Why bother to meet with a loser, so close after a terrible election, that included not only voter suppression, manipulation of information and mean spirited campaigns against the President and people of color, that was directly or indirectly tolerated or ignored by Mitt? Mitt was running for the top 5%, and now he is needed to speak to that arrogant self serving insular mean spirited wealth 5% so they would be willing to give a little more?

But in a democracy even slime balls, idiots, arrogant morons, self serving men, powerful lobby groups...get attention because "we have to collaborate, negotiate and show a middle ground"! Pleeeeease! What middle ground? There has not been a middle ground since 1985. And much of the discussions and debates serve White boys who want to make money out of you....while they claim to be job creators, hard workers and victims (because nobody trusts them, likes them or believes them).

These are the guys who give a face burn and then act like victims when you get upset, angry and demand justice.

Or...they live or work in communities where women of color just don't exist or talk, or if they talk loudly and firmly they get punished severely...and get accused of madness or badness or sadness.

Now we got to sit with these losers and give their big egos attention...again? Where we've come! Where we've come!

In America we celebrate winners, who are smart, shrewd and successful. If those successful are Black or Brown or White then we want them to eat the humble pie so mediocre White men can feel good or look good always...

It really doesn't matter to me whether the guy is black, white, green, or purple. I just get tired of hearing people trumpet Obama as being "our first black president", which he is not. In my mind, the true first black president would have parents that are both black, and I mean American black, not foreign black. As I said, I have no problem, based on race, with a president of any color. What I have a problem with is a president, or member of congress, for that matter, that doesn't govern based on the needs of the ENTIRE country, not just certain groups. The country is divided mainly because the parties in the congress cannot work together. The man in the oval office is largely immaterial, being only a figurehead.

It is time liberals stop the gloating and comments promoting hatred and time republicans accept the fact that Mitt Romney lost..right wrong or indifferent and quit fueling the fire for the other side. You cannot tell me that we are all not so much different that we want what is best for all across the board. Who is preparing the lunch?

And will their be "food tasters" for both Obama & Romney?

I can't believe anyone thought Romney had an "economic plan". If he did - why didn't he present it prior to the election? This is laughable....

Three weeks and one day and the GOP folks are still whining. Get over it. You lost! And don't even think about 2014 or 2016 unless you change your way of thinking. We have rock icon Bruce Springsteen and you have failed SNL moron Victoria Jackson. Enough said. It's a nice gesture to invite Mitt. Yes, he could be an asset for the President. I don't think Mitt lost the election.....Grover Norquist, Donald Trump, Ted Nugent, Michelle Bachmann, and Herman Cain lost it. I think if Mitt Romney and John McCain would have been allowed to be themselves in the last two elections, Obama might never have won. But we all know you need to tow the anti tax, religious zealot, loud, arrogant, and greedy line if you are to win favor with the GOP leadership. You need to bend over and let Karl Rove violate you if you want to win the nomination. It's pretty sad. Ronald Reagan is spinning like a top in his grave. As soon as Ted Nugent and his one chromosome is allowed to be a spokesman for your party, you're toast. Have a nice day.

Here is what i think. I think all the people that voted for Oboma will be eating a lot of crow at the end of the next four years. If your bulb up there is to dim to figure out that 50% of the people working and paying taxes can support the 50% that do not and there still be enough left to pay down the debt and still run our over size government I would hate to see the way you run your finances and balance your check book. between what Oboma is going to do witch is raise taxes on companies and those same companies having to pay for Oboma care by just those two things alone there will be cut backs and layoffs and no new jobs because companies can not afford it. and here is something to think about, The reason that Mitt Romney didn't get elected was because he was offering jobs to people that DO NOT WANT TO WORK!!!! PERIOD!!!! One more thing is I think its pretty sad that Oboma had to spend 90% of his campaign cash on making Romney look bad (with the help from ABC,NBC,CBS and CNN) because he had nothing to run on. In the past four years he has done NOTHING that he could use to win but you don't get that do you?? It's time to change your dim bulb!!!

Obama didn't have to spend money to make Romney look bad. He did a great job of that without any help. Lots of people voted for him to get that 20% tax cut but most understood that it wasn't realistic. And what jobs was he offering. He said he will create 12 million jobs. But never a hint of how he would do it. Only the same tired economic plan that was a total failure when Bush did it. We were lucky that most people didn't buy his BS.
