Obama, Romney to meet for lunch Thursday

After a long and -- at times -- contentious campaign, President Obama and Mitt Romney sit down together for lunch at the White House on Thursday. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

President Obama and the man he defeated in the 2012 presidential contest -- Republican Mitt Romney -- will have lunch Thursday at the White House, Obama's press secretary announced.

It will be the first meeting since the election's end.

The White House said there will be no press coverage of the meeting.

this is what i don't get.....those that wanted romney to win said he has the business experience to help the economy....all i have heard about his experience is that he would buy companies then sell them causing multitudes of people to lose their jobs while he and other ceo's made a profit....i don't think that type of business experience is one i would brag about

Romney was not rejected: there were to many people voting for Obama because he was black, not because what he has done or plans to do.

or are you trying to say that not enough people were voting for Romney who were white ?? It's really quite simple, The President won the Popular Vote in BOTH elections... only the fourth time in american history that has happened ... Second... the Dems Got more voted in the senate races and picked up more seats and retained the Senate ... 3rd .. The Dems had MORE popular votes in the House of Representatives and picked up even more seats ... and would have taken over theHOuse had the Republicans not Gerry-Mandered the districs like Swiss chees... because, you see Big Dave, NOBODY wanted the DOGFOOD your party sells ... and wuite Frankly Republicans KNOW they are selling Dog Food ... which is precisely why that are unable to and always will be unable to win elections unless the supress voter turnout, Monkey around with Voter elegibility and screw around with voting districts to try and configure outcomes in their Favor ... so the real question to be asked here is ... Aren't you ashamed to be a part of such and EMPTY and Pathetic party that is so devoid of Good ideas that you have to literally HIDE your true intent on what you want to do to the country while screwing around with Voter turnout ... I would be Embarrrassed to even associate myself with somethng as dirty and disgusting as a Registered Republican ... theres nothing good about your party ANYMORE ... it has changed .. it is now a party devoid of Moral and chock full of Christian Hate ..

I am afraid you can't handle the truth.

And it is not about hate it is just easier for DEMS to say that because if DEMS told the truth Obama would not be in Office.

Look the republican message is go after the poor first to fix the debt, and even if you took all the food stamp money, and all the welfare money you would get about 1 trillion dollars over 10 years. Substantial but hardly enough to put a dent in the debt and not the christian thing to do. That un-empathetic approach did not sell with the american people. BTW. The statistical reality is that the red-staters are, on average, less prone to pay income taxes, more prone to receive subsidies from the federal government for all sorts of things, less physically fit, less responsible in their sexual behaviour, more prone to inflict harm on themselves and on others through smoking, drunk driving and misuse of firearms, and more prone to freeride on the healthcare system, compared to blue-staters.

The subsides you speak of go to farmers to grow food. If you want hard welfare stats 8 out of the top 10 are blue states. With CA and NY contributing to over half the total cost.

The real shame of it is even on a percentage basis CA still has the highest percent of people on welfare at 3%. That's with 1/8 of the American population living there as well.

Was not quoting just welfare statistics. Look how much states get back in comparison to what they pay in tax. Mississippi and West Virginia are at the head of the class—each take nearly $3 from Washington for each dollar they pay in taxes. Both red states.

if a new dept of business is created as a cabinet level position and it is offered to romney, he won't take it. first of all, it is growing gov't . who needs another dept with thousands of new gov't employees to pay and provide pensions and health care for that we can't afford. we are 16 trillion in debt. romney ran on a smaller gov't . 2nd he won't take it because obama would micro manage the dep't and he would have to serve at obama's pleasure and when you are a capitalist like romney is , it is not likely you could run a dept like the socialist in charge would want.... but the gesture is positive.

I would say that the President is going to use Mr. Romney just like he used President Clinton. Without President Clinton's help the President would not have been re-elected. Now he wishes to use Mr. Romey's help on something he truly does not understand, the economy.

After the anti-Romney mudslinging that was done by Obama during the campaign, trying to paint a very charitable guy as one who would shove someone's grandmother off a cliff, a tactic which, sadly, won, I hope that Romney enjoys his meal, is his usual respectful self, and then if asked by Obama to help him in some fashion "for the good of the country," that Romney tells him in polite language where to shove it. What a shame, a truly unique person when it comes to turning around troubled organizations, known by his classmates at Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School as a brilliant and very hard worker, versus different remarks re the President's days there, having had his chance to serve the country taken away through Obama's mudslinging. If Obama hadn't run his campaign that way, I'd be pushing for Romney to help us out. But after the way Obama treated him, I think that Romney should politely beg off.

Would Obama have been invited to a dinner at the white house if Romney were the president? Hardly! Romney would have been too busy toasting his rich donors to care about anyone else. Remember, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich were calling Obama the "food stamp" president. That was a ploy to disparage President Obama. However, Obama has always shown grace and respect for his opponents. But, make no mistake, this will be a difficult trip for Romney especially when he sees the elaborate mansion at the white house and thinks to himself: gosh I could have been the one occupying the oval office, had I won. But, I lost because I screwed up. The presidency is not a right or entitlement; it is a privilege bestowed upon the candidate by the voters. Romney should take John Sununu with him to the dinner at. Sununu has some learning to do.

When challenged about your remarks, why is it you go right to the run of the mill troll comment? Either accept your hypocrisy or defend it. By taking the troll route it seems you have no defense of the hypocrisy.

After Obama had his first debate with Romney he knew he wasn't going to win an intellectual election. He went right back to Chicago style campaigning.

Bobby, I don't think you're a troll, you make some points, I don't agree with them; but, they are rational, well thought out points. Trolls don't do that, look at some of the posts they make....what else is a post by someone who calls themself 'Obamanation'...how about the post of what POTUS means in connection with Obama. I try very hard to answer respectfully to anyone who wants a conversation; but, when dealing with trolls, the prevailing widsom is "Don't feed them".

Bobby Jones, When I saw the first debate, I was reminded of Mr. Reagan's first debate with President Carter. Mr. Reagan fumbled and stumbled on purpose. He had received some good advice about how to throw his opponent off track. I think the president was playing rope-a-dope (no, I don't think Governor Romney is a dope, it's just what the trick is called) in the first debate. Of course, we'll never know the truth. See the new book The Presidents Club--it is really informative about relationships and political ploys.

Romney heard that the President needs his shoes shined but has no time to do. Willard Mitt offered to do it for free. Ain't America a great country or what. OBAMA 2016!

I am glad that Romney is not our president but it might be a good idea for Obama to offer Romney a chance to sit on a panel to come up with ideas on reducing the national debt. While I do not agree with most of Romneys pledges that left out the working people of this country, I belive that he is a very intelligent person. We need a bi partisan government, if we hope to get this country back where it should be.

It doesn't matter what the American people agree with or not.

                                        Massive layoffs are coming.

                                        Unemployment is fixing to increase.

Taxes on the Middle Class are fixing to increase.

Employers are fixing to drop your health insurance and force you on to the State Exchange.

GDP is fixing to go into negative numbers.

And the US will have another credit score reduction.

So it doesn't matter what you "think"......it is what is actually occurring that matters.

But hey, at least we feel good about re-electing him, right?

If this is a courtesy dinner, then all is well. However, I cannot help but wonder what would be discussed at the dinner table. Is Obama offering Romney a cabinet position, or is he soliciting ideas from Romney on how to run the economy? In his victory speech, Obama turned me off when he hinted on meeting with Mitt Romney for ideas about how tackle the country's economic problems. It would be unthinkable for Obama to validate Romney's trickle down economic policies that voters soundly rejected. Obama crushed this guy during the election, so he should let him go and take care of his tax returns and foreign bank accounts. If it is a matter of economic know-how, there are brilliant minds in the Democratic party. Obama does not need Romney for anything. Thank you.

Now if Romney makes the mistake of saying anything the President will tell the Congress that even there own likes what he is doing. Of course he will take a little of what Romney says and then add a few twists.

I just got an e-mail from Bob Casey Dem senator about Obama's plan to redcue the cost of living increase for people on Social Security. These are his words. For example if beef went up 3% we would give SS people a 3% raise. But we know that some people will switch to chicken so why give them the full 3% raise if chicken rose only 2%.

Poor people probably already eat chicken.

Rich people will stick with beef.

So I guess the "middle class" will suffer the reduction and lower their life style. Once again Obama has helped the Middle Class.
