Obama, Romney to meet for lunch Thursday

After a long and -- at times -- contentious campaign, President Obama and Mitt Romney sit down together for lunch at the White House on Thursday. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

President Obama and the man he defeated in the 2012 presidential contest -- Republican Mitt Romney -- will have lunch Thursday at the White House, Obama's press secretary announced.

It will be the first meeting since the election's end.

The White House said there will be no press coverage of the meeting.

Really wish the President would not do this, tradition, or not. I hope he doesn't offer him a position where he can affect policy.

I agree. What could the President possibly gain from visiting with someone who has actual experience in making companies more efficient and promoting growth.

Mitt isn't nearly as shifty as Obama - I've worked with used car salesmen and Obama has it down to a science.

Hmmm, Mitt is the shifty one by far. He just wasn't as smart as he thought he was (willard that is). Maybe next time he will stay in his lane and do what he does best. Steal money and hid it and never show his tax returns.

      #135.3 - Wed Nov 28, 2012 12:18 PM EST

Enough with the tax return garbage...tearing down another man's house doesn't make yours look any better. I'm quite sure that the IRS could have been easily persuaded by the current administration to probe Romney's finances (if there was actually anything questionable) What on earth has happened to Democrats over the past four years? You people are destroying America, particularly now with your "lord and savior", the Socialist in Chief. Stop focusing on the shiny objects meant to distract you from reality.

      is it 2016 yet?

I find it rather amusing that the Dem's who voted for Obaha to continue to receive their "entitlements", are now going to see those "entitlements" vanish after the budget is passed. Time to dust off your work boots you bunch of leeches.

No sdc, we are all losing.

After this so called fiscal cliff....nothing will change.

People will be taxed more, and our debt will continue to go up.

Wonderful plan we have here in the U.S.

I hope Barack will ask Mitt for advice on how he can work with Republicans in his second term, and how he can work with Conservative Democrats. The Government needs to work together on a bipartisan basis, to solve the nations problems. Thank you, Sincerely, Charles Joseph Kickham the 3rd, Hallandale Beach, Florida.

The GOP didn't have a warm and fuzz for Willard. Thats why he was hanging out with the Donald. Trump was door knocking for him. Willard can't help with the GOP. He was a loser and the GOP hates losers.

          #138.1 - Wed Nov 28, 2012 12:12 PM EST

Charles, I think maybe that is the plan. Also, he might want to get together and think through some of the loopholes the republicans are interested in closing. It doesn't sound like they are open to tax rate increases so much as closing loopholes. The president has to make sure the loopholes they are choosing are not the ones helping the middle class. As for everyone trashing Romney, he lost. They won. If there is anything wose than a sore loser its a graceless winner.

Sheila. I agree with your statement. The only comment I have to make is, they can accomplish what they need to do without closing any "loophole" (which is another term for deductions) They will simply cap deductions at an amount that all can agree to. Likely between $25,000 and $50,000, and I'm going to assume closer to $50,000, as this will make it so that it doesn't effect the deductions of those that make less than $250,000/year, which was the intention of Obama all along.

But taxing again, isn't the problem. You can't tax the American people enough to make up for the spending that the U.S. does.

Yes, it did hurt losing the election to the likes of you jack-asses, however, when the final bell tolls, you will be just as despondant, broke, powerless to stop the economic calamity that your "saviour" is bringing upon us. Obama's main goal here is to bankrupt America, bring us to a sub-par nation status and usher in his NWO (New World Order). So yuk it up while you can, as the economy races towards insolvency by Obama's reckless spending and inability to create a viable budget, you laugh, I'll prepare for the riots and mass graves to be filled.

The next 4 years in our country are like a DVR on pause till someone takes over who can actually do the job with some degree of success. Then you can hit play again. The next 4 years batten down and just survive it will not get any better (Unless like Feisty you survive on welfare). Do not accept this failed presidents excuses he simply failed.

Obama already proved his administration isn't the "transparent" one he promised back in 2008, this transaction with Romney, whatever it's for, doesn't change that fact.

So the President takes the high road and follows up on his post-campaign promise.

Let's see how the Republican party reacts. I'm guessing absolutely nothing will result because Romney has absolutely no influence in the party.

However, this is a smart political move and the President will benefit because this gesture of goodwill to the Republicans will look Presidential to a majority of the American people.

The Republicans will continue to look petty and divisive and not interested in getting things done.

Unfortunately all the Republicans are interested in is obstruction and deflection from the truly serious issues facing the nation.

This is how the President won the election, why the American people re-elected him and why the Republicans lost.

Spending is only up 0.4% under the Obama Administration - get your definitions correct.

If you're referring to the deficits and the debt, those are largely the result of Bush's 2 unfunded wars, Med-D donut hole, Tax cuts and and borrowing necessary to stop the economic meltdown at the end Bush's Administration.

The problem is when we have debt to pay down, the last thing we need to be doing is giving the top 1% a 4% tax break on everything after their first $250k.

                              #151.5 - Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:15 PM EST

I'm not singling any administration or party out when it comes to spending from this point now, going backwards.

What I am saying is that there are republicans that want to get a hold of spending, whereas most democrats do not. that's not to say there isn't republicans that are spenders, and that there isn't democrats who are fiscally resposible, but the parties as a whole is what I'm discussing.

Republicans or democrats alike, we need to control our spending, and without cuts across the board......NOTHING will change!!!

You can argue all you want for having the rich pay more, but that 4% tax break you are talking about will only raise the governments revenue by $82.4 Billion. So what are you going to do about the other 96% (or over $1.2 Trillion to $1.4 Trillion+) that we add to the deficit every year, consindering most democrats won't support cuts to spending, particularly on entitlements that suck up the vast majority of that deficit.

You an tax the Forbes 400 (the 400 wealthiest people in America) at 100% and it will only cover the deficit spending for one year, under current spending.

First of all, good luck talking them into it.

Secondly, what are you going to do every year after that?

The top 10% of income earners pay approx. 70% of ALL federal tax.

The middle 40% pay approx 30% of ALL federal tax.

And the bottom 50% pay nearly ZERO % of ALL federal tax.

Yet the wealthy aren't paying their fair share???

Again, taxing is not the problem, Spending is, and until that is recognized by the masses, nothing will change.

I hoped that they could work together. Why not get the best Romney has to offer, and the best Obama has to offer.

I feel things would work better for America as a whole if... the winner of presidential elections, is President and the loser is Vice President. Supreme Court Justices shouldn't be for life. Election terms for all offices should be shorter. There should be a limit of terms for all offices. There should be only 1 item per bill (no pork)... etc. It's too easy to hide corruption in our current system.

Also, I think media should become regulated. Our "free" press is biased, and not really "free". To me, free meant reporting everything, even things that make people in power look bad. without consequence. Now it seems more like a propaganda machine leaning twords whatever is funding/fueling it. If it doesn't tell both sides, unbiased, it's more like brainwashing than news.

                                        Don't think so Gateway.

Wall Street gave more money to the Democrats. The GOP ain't running the economy. That's why it sucks.

                                          No they didn't.

That’s the difference between what securities and investment firms and their employees have given to Republican candidates, the GOP, and right-leaning political-action committees during the current election cycle ($56 million) and what they’ve given to Democrats ($35 million), according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics
