President Obama is taking his fiscal campaign around the country, with his first stop to Hatfield, Pa.
Yet during Tuesday’s briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked why the president is starting in Pennsylvania -- which at one time was considered up for electoral grabs -- instead of a state that might have been less hyper-aware of the debate over economic issues in which Obama and his opponent Mitt Romney were embroiled.
“This conversation about fiscal issues has been had during the months and months of the campaign. But the president only visited seven to 10 swing states,” Washington Post correspondent David Nakamura noted, asking why the president wasn’t visiting a deeply red state.
Pushing back on Nakamura’s premise, Carney cited the president’s speech on December 6, 2011 –- almost a year ago -- in Osawatomie, Kan., where Obama rolled out what was to be the premise of his campaign: higher taxes for the wealthy and continued lower rates for the middle class.
“This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class,” Obama said at that speech, premiering a line often heard on the trail. But since talk of the fiscal cliff really heated up in Washington, the president hasn’t done any outside-the-Beltway campaigning beyond states highlighted in “path to 270” electoral vote maps.
That doesn’t mean the president’s words in Pennsylvania won’t reach the ears of Americans elsewhere -- nor does it mean there isn't some political motivation. In fact, some of the areas in Pennsylvania surrounding Hatfield’s 13th Congressional District are represented by Republican members, meaning Obama could be traveling there to influence some potential crossover House votes.
Plus, Carney didn’t rule out the fact that Obama will be doing more travel in the future.
“The president will travel all around the country in his second term, and looks forward to it,” he said.

Our president sure is one smart and savvy cookie! Take it back out there to the people! This is the way to do it! Get a finer sense of what WE THE PEOPLE want out of this president and Congress!
Go get 'em O!
Bah! Nobody with any sense ever considered Pennsylvania to be 'up for electoral grabs'! Obama will always be made to feel at home in the City of Brotherly Love.
Romney made some robocalls here and launched negative TV ads near the end of the campaign, but all that did was make him look over-confident and out of touch. We'll never forget his laughable campaign stop at a WaWa gas station where he pondered whether it was the local's favorite spot for lunch.
And who can forget Romney insulting the cookies provided by a local bakery?
We'll always have those memories...
Obama will always be welcomed with affection in the Keystone state.
What real Americans want is cheaper gas prices, real jobs and an end to this class warfare nonsense
Our President leads and he's so cool about it too.

RepubliCons stupidity amazes me. They are about to fall off the fiscal cliff Wile E. Coyote style.

President Obama to take up immigration next Congress:
On the eve of a visit by Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto, the White House promised Monday that President Barack Obama "will be pressing for action" in Congress on comprehensive immigration reform and regards that goal as "achievable."

Yeah...AlaskaGirl (90210?) too many numbers that a pig can't remember -
.
This is America where people rule...not corporations and their Republican minions who rule. Majority of Americans want to raise taxes on the super-rich. Many Republicans have defied the public opinion for years on this and many other issues.
Just look what tax cuts for the rich have done to US economy -
It all went downhill since Reagan who claimed Coolidge as his hero. What a coincidence - that tax cut of Coolidge (1925-29) led to the Great Depression, and GOP tax cut since Reagan to Bush (1981-2009) led to the Great Recession. This finding is significant.
.
For an overview of top marginal tax rate since 1913, please consult this following website.

Yeah old fat guy they want those things and they are starting to realize that the republican party is exactly what is standing in their way. BTW what is a "real American", is that a native American Indian? Please explain what a real American is, are you confusing department store mannequins with live people? What's up?
Alaska Girl ...
No kidding! Interesting how the President has 435 elected members of Congress who will only tell him to be conciliatory and that they really don't represent their constitutents and only special interest. I applaud the President for getting out and hearing what the people want rather then looking at their elected representatives to twist it for him!
Reasons to be encouraged about fiscal cliff’s endgame

Talking to people and inspiration from people is Soul Food. The President is truly a people person.
One thing that our current President, could NEVER be accused of.... is being STUPID !!! He knows who put him back in the White House and, he is obviously taking his case to those very people !!! That is whom he really needs to hear from, the Congress only mouths platitudes at their constituents, whereas the President is getting OUT THERE, and getting opinions first hand !!! Way to go Mr. President, we who support you, and even some who don't, know that you value the opinions of the ENTIRE COUNTRY, not just the voices of a few...!!!
why visit the red states? All red states have got more federal aid than their tax contribution. Receiving more federal money but being more anti-federal government. Talking about 'bite the hand that feeds them.' You can't fix stupid.
.
Please visit the following website for details about states' tax contribution and federal aid -

Pigotry: Thank you for that table in #1.4. Very informative. ☺
Actually, because of Republican redistricting even though Obama won the state and the state population by a great margin he only won 7 out 20 house seats. These are seats we can get in 2014 when the Republicans drive us over the cliff and rip off the middle class if the wealthy don't get their kick backs.
Maybe we won't go back to Clinton rates of 35% to 39% in 2013 (well we will which they'll go to anyway if we go over the cliff), but if the Republicans are fools enough to hurt the pockets of the poor, elderly, and middle class and get kicked them out in 2014. Then we can tax the 1% at the Reagan rates of 50%. :)
He should keep his butt in Washington working with Congress on this mess they have created.
off course obama is going to ''play'' his entire second term. like this is a surprise he's touting a state by state vacation. watch obama stay as far away from washington and responsibility as possible while manipulating the msm into blaming anything and everything on the gop. the only party line obamas gonna cross is the one that leads to his next celebrity party.
Why doesn't this president do something he has NEVER done in his life - be a leader. Going to groups and simply criticizing and bashing people who don't believe like you is NOT being a leader - that is being a whiner.
A REAL leader would sit down in a room with all participants and having a discussion. Discuss pros and cons to each element and compromise. The president telling college kids that wouldn't know an income statement from a personal statement that the president is willing to compromise but not on taxes on the rich or entitlements is not compromising at all. That is a useless individual.
Time to man up. Time to be a LEADER and LEAD!! Time to discuss like a real man and not run around the children's playground yelling and screaming that "Betty touched you". Act like a man for once in your anti-business anti-capital anti-freedom life of yours. Quite crying like a little baby and act like a leader.
"On the Road Again" (since 21 January 2009) has a new meaning:
Can't provide leadership in Washington, go on the road to garnish public support for your Progressive agenda. Yep, Mr. Obama was right, he can't be a leader and get anything done within D.C.
Got it !!!!
President Obama bypasses the pundits and reporters and take his views on the road, meeting everyday folks, speaking directly to the American people.
I agree Alaska Girl:
go get'em O!
Northstar, I just posted basically the same thing on Alaska Girl's thread ... GMTA! ;-)
Go Mr. President!
yeah ... total agreement ...no need for a pig's squeal ... typing tires me - a compassionate pig.
Except, he should be in Washington meeting with the people that represent everyday folks. He should be brokering deals and guiding negotiations to solve the huge problems facing this country.
Candice: And just who in Washington represents everday folks???? Surely no one in Congress....they represent corporations, lobbyists, big oil, defense contractors, billionnaires...none of which are everyday folks.
Sad but very true, Dragon!
Obama is smart enought to know who supports him and who obstructs him. He tried working across the aisle, but it was useless with a party that had vowed to make him a one-term president and kill all his initiatives.
Well guess what, GOP...you failed! Now it's your necks on the line. Either listen to the wishes of your constituents and compromise with the president, or you will be looking for a job after the next election.
Count on it.
Sell Your Approach In The Oppositions Own Back Yards! That Works If Not For Right Now Than For Down The Road To 2014 -- I'll Aways Remember When John Kennedy Pasted Through My Turf -- It's A Vote Getter! People Want to See And Meet The President! Go For It!
yeah... I believe in the decency and fairness of the American people ... I can't trust those pols in Congress who only take care of their own political future - in opposition to the public good of the country.
.
The President needs to talk to these decent and fair poeple.
Question is, are there any moderate Republicans left to "cross over" or not? The more the ultra conservatives act to "purify" the GOP, the less effective they are in solving real world problems.
"An economy constrained by high tax rates will never produce enough revenue to balance the budget, just as it will never create enough jobs or profits." John F. Kennedy
My question is, are the any JFK Democrats left who have a clue about economics and fiscal responsibility?
Candice-
Of course, Candice.
Us Democrats wrote the book on fiscal responsibility.
Bill Clinton had a budget surplus and Barack Obama is restoring America with brilliant economic policy.
The real question is "Why do Republicans constantly want to take all of the Middle Class's money?"
Salud
The Democrats wrote the book? Remember,President Clinton's "budget surplus" was created under a Republican Congress.
I would disagree on crediting President Obama with a brilliant economic policy.....unless you consider pitifully slow growth, 8% unemployment - much of it long term, 0% interest rates, and trillions in debt sound policy.
The counter to your question is: "Why do Democrats want to tax the wealthy when the anticipated increased revenue will run the government for only about 8 days?"
Or, "Why do Democrats want to raise taxes when history shows higher taxes result in lower revenue?" (see 1932, 1937, and 1990 for example).
Or, more importantly, "Why do Democrats believe higher taxes on the wealthy will create jobs for the people?"
Or, as importantly, "Why the obsession with the middle class? Doesn't anybody care about the poor anymore?"
Or, how about: "Are we just planning on raising taxes? What about the spending cuts?"
Gazuntite.
To answer that question in simple terms, ask another question: What is the source of job creation in America?
The answer to that question is consumer demand/ consumer spending. Our economy is mostly driven by consumer spending. We have millions of potential consumers who cannot afford to buy the goods and services they want and need, either because they are unemployed or underpaid.
In this situation, goods sit unsold on the shelves and nobody does well, not the manufacturers, buyers or sellers.
We need to make and sell our products to more than just a wealthy few who can afford to spend. The small number of people at the top of the economic ladder cannot buy enough consumer goods to keep the economic wheels turning. We need to enable everyone to participate in the build/buy cycle.
When more goods and services are bought and sold, everyone benefits. The wealthy, who are asked to pay a little more in taxes, benefit as well. Unless the wealthy pay more in taxes, the middle class will have to pay more in taxes to make up for their tax break. That is a prescription for economic disaster. The middle class is already hampered by a lack of disposable income, and to take even more away would seriously hurt the economy. The wealthy will never miss the money they pay in higher taxes, at least in terms of their participation in the consumer economy.
As an example, Romney's millions sit in offshore accounts in Bermuda, Switzerland, the Caymans... will he miss a few million? His money does not benefit the U.S.A., for he is not investing it here. His consumer spending would likely remain exactly the same even if his tax rate doubled. Of course, he might have to go back to eating tuna and pasta. Oh, the horror! LOL
Candice, you deserve credit for sticking to your guns when you're badly outnumbered by my Fellow Travellers (at least at the moment), and much more for being civil and decent about it. (I admit, on any given day, I can be one ugly SOB- and yesterday was one of my worst.)
I would like for you to expand on something you stated- "Why do Democrats want to raise taxes when history shows higher taxes result in lower revenue?" (see 1932, 1937, and 1990 for example).
1937 was when Roosevelt began to back off from his highly effective New Deal approach, under tremendous pressure from the same gang of thieves and idiots who tanked the economy in the first place, and the (almost immediate) result was a spike in inflation coupled to a stall- a near standstill, actually- in economic growth. This effect was so sudden, and so dramatic, that we were still trying to shake off the effects of it four years later, when the Empire of Japan very thoughtfully sent us an industrial stimulus program in the shape of the Mitsubishi A6M2.
Your references to '32 and '90 went over my head. Details, please?
(And that's actually "gesundheit", meaning roughly "good health [to you].)
I hope now that he is a second term president who does not have to run for re-election, he will be able to visit some of the solid red and solid blue states that have not gotten much attention in the last four years. Being in a solid blue state, I would love to have the president visit sometime in the next four years.
America is a democracy - meanning that the people rule ... the President needs to constantly draw inspiration from the people ... it's relaxing...it's away from all the pols in Washington...it's refreshing...it's good for the body and soul.
.
It's also a reminder to the Republicans in Washington that people matter more.
Actually, America is not a democracy. It is a Republic.
Candice-
If you want the most technical term, our country is a constitutionally limited representative democratic republic.
Candice - most books will tell you that now republic and democracy mean the same thing for American political system
http://www.thisnation.com/question/011.html
Candice..
the Founding Fathers? they were slave owners...gee...contemporarize...Candice. Live in the 21st century..not the 18th century.
.
still democracy is synonymous with republic now. Time has changed...change with it, Candice.
Pigotry.
You're right. Contemporizing (?) is crucial to the growth of a society as is adapting to evolving dynamics. I don't condone the Founding Fathers ownership of slaves, obviously. But the principals on which our country was founded were good ones and have allowed us 200 and some years of survival, good and fruitful times. Don't lose sight of our original reasons for being.
Democracies - true ones - don't tend to survive. Sreeming lib offered a good technical phrase.
California with its numerous ballot initiatives is a perfect example of democracy run amok.
Initiatve number one: vote for lower taxes!
Initiative number two: vote for more spending on public education!
It's easy to see how that system fails in a hurry.
(Or maybe it's all that weed... ?? LOL)
Lib Friends: Candice has got us. The Federalist Papers are a very strong point in her favor.
Lumping everything together is the wrong approach. Social security is the best way to guarantee income for seniors .People pay into it for over 40 years and much of it actually funds other governmental obligations.Even if an increase was need in 20 years,it would be very small.Medicare is the most cost effective way to cover senior health.Again, the average person pays into it for over 40 years, the increase would be very small compared to an insurance alternative. The postal service is in the red because Congress changed the pension funding rules.Sure every agency and service needs to be fine tuned, but the prsidential and republican single focus on cuts and spending is fiscal mismanagement. This whole fiscal cliff is more represenative of past and present presidential and congressional fiscal expertise than spending and revenue.
He has no intention of actually getting any work done, he is just gonna stay in campaign mode, which is after all, all he really knows.
It is going to be 4 years of massive travel for both the Obamas and all their friends and familes.
Visiting states, even if he visits all "57" won't get him the compromises he needs in Washington. He needs to sit his butt down and start talking with the folks that can get it done.
Right in front of all of you and you will still defend him. As usual it is his Chicago style politics of "in your face"
Now the racists comments will come, along with the insults, etc etc.
Plus, Carney didn’t rule out the fact that Obama will be doing more travel in the future.
“The president will travel all around the country in his second term, and looks forward to it,” he said.
Yep, no doubt he has no intention of working, he fooled you all again.
Actually, Momma Dukes, I'm not interested in throwing the race card- no need to play that against the weak hand you're showing.
Rather, my question to you is, why on Earth do all of you Obama haters act like it's the end of the freakin' world whenever he leaves his office for more than a few hours at a stretch, and if he's spotted on a golf course, Katie bar the door!
Now, personally I wish my President wasn't wasting his time on an idiotic, resource- squandering, elitist game like golf. I'd love to take the Big O rock-climbing in my native Santa Cruz Mountains, but I'm guessing his Secret Service detail would go into apoplexy at the very suggestion.
But, hey, if the man likes golf... would I be thought nit-picky if I were to point out that his predecessor in that job spent more time on vacation and golf than any other president ever, by a huge margin? I don't seem to remember y'all bitching about that- or even giving any sign that you'd noticed.
Course, the case could be made that a.) It never made a rip of difference where the Son of a Bush was at any given moment, since he was only there to sign his name where Cheney told him to, and b.) it was actually better for America overall when the dolt spent his time in Crawford or out playing pasture pool, safely away from people of influence and events of consequence.
But, if this President wants to have a little vaca with his family- oh my Dog, nuclear holocaust! And your yellow press is always there to invent damning lies about it, which y'all dutifully lap up... yeah, come to think of it, why do you get so exercised when your President takes a few hours off?
Could it be that, absent the lies and inventions, you'd have nothing left to attack him with?
Res ipsa loquitor. Peace!
Didn't vote for Bushwhacker, sorry to disappoint. He was an alcoholic that abused his wife, bankrupted 2 oil companies and damn near did the same to the Texas Rangers. I digress.
Yes I did bitch about Bush, all the time.
However, Bush quit playing golf while the war was going on.
2nd, most of his trips to Crawford were working trips.
Point is, he had no intention of working, no intention of showing any type of leadership, he is just gonna travel and campaign.
@FoxTrotsky: Best read so far this morning! Got a great laugh when you said, "Katie, bar the door!" But, on a more serious note, you totally nailed the near crucifixion president Obama is bombarded with by the Right when the man takes one step outside the Oval office, yet "The son of a Bush"(loved that, too!) was perpetually on vacation during his 8 year stint and not a peep out of the Conservatives. Anyway, thanks for a great read this morning!
Good for President Obama....Americans elected him and want him to connect with them and know their concerns and ideas.
Repubs wails about President Obama traveling around the country...but they'd wail about him staying in the WH too....they are never going to like anything President Obama does so we can ignore them, after all Americans spoke on 11/6 and they re-elected President Obama and Dems gained seats in the House and Senate.
Are you that dense that you find it hard to believe that a DEMOCRAT would criticize Obama?
Why, thank you, A.G.! There are two things I look for on this page: Applause from my Fellow Travellers, and foaming-at-the-mouth rage from the Wrong wingers.
Either one of those responses tends to make me think I'm doing my job.
I'll look for you tomorrow. Peace!
Momma Dukes, you sound like the fool here.
Nope, some of us see right through him.
He had no intention of working towards anything his second term.
The election is over Mr. President. Time to stop campaigning and start governing. Oh wait...you're not very good at governing. God help us all!
Thanks, I know some on here do get my point.
Some of the rest will have buyers remorse when the country keeps spiraling downward & he just keeps traveling.
I think the article should have read, "Obama takes his dog and pony show". That is more fitting!
Whatever you want to say about Obama, he's mighty good a leaping on airforce one and creating one hell of a carbon footprint. Same with Pelosi jetting back and forth between her vineyard and washington.
And also I'm so happy I've had to tighten my belt with new taxes and take a whack on my health insurance next year. Thanks for redistributing my healthcare Obama. Your mighty generous with other peoples money.
Ever read George Orwell's 1984? Land of the free my a$$...
Hey Barack! The campaign's over - you won.
Why don't you try showing some leadership for a change, instead of charging off to a rally.
Amazing how our illustrious President is out campaigning again to push for HIS way to resolve the so called "fiscal cliff". He should fly back to Washington and start the discussions to solve the problem. Mr. Obama has no intention of compromising anything. Nothing but a bunch of hot air from him. Compromise from Obama is to have the Repubilcans cave while he can keep all of his grand ideas. We deserve the mess by voting him back in. And naturally, the Republicans will get the blame.
David, the president has solved the problem via the tax rates going back to the Clinton era for the top earners. The numbers simply don't lie and with this increase we will gain an estimated $82.4 B per year in additional revenue. When you combine this with the zero dollars in cost savings from no budgetary cuts we reduce our rate of deficit accumulation from $1.2 T per year down to barely over $1 T per year. Don't you get the math??? This way in four more years we won't likely even be to $21 T in debt as a nation. What could possibly go wrong :)
Thank God we'll only be around 20.5 T in debt and not 21 T... Unless Michelle needs another vacation....
One thing you can say about Obama he is a good scam artist. As for the myth of the 2% paying their fair share and myth that is, because the so called super rich have their money in trusts which are not taxable, and in income from securities which are tax free. The actual top 5% earners are the small business owners that provide 90% of new jobs. Most of these small businesses are sub-chapter s corporations. Meaning that all of the money their companies earn falls through to them personally of which they only make about 5% profit off of after expenses, and before taxes. After paying out federal, state and local tax’s amounting to about 45%, that 5% is cut down to 3% for spendable income of which 1/3 has to be kept in the company for equity. The small business owner must then take some of the remaining to live and to use for expansion, like hiring new people. What Obama and the Socialist Democrats want would increase what small Business has to pay in tax’s which would wipe what little profit these small business make which means no new jobs and even laying workers off to recover that lost 3% profit. Without those jobs to provide revenue, that means no entitlements. Think about that!
They are not going to think about it because they will only believe that which comes from Obama's lying lips.
Let them kill the small businesses, eventually who will pay for their entitlements?
I say they voted for him, let them feel the repercussions of that dumb move.
Today my boss laid off 4 people, all Obama supporters. That is how it should be, you wanted it, you wanted Obama's regulations to strangle business, then you be the first to lose your job.
4 more!!!
The President needs to get on the road, and talk to all the citizens. President Obama must not sit in Washington D.C. The President is the "President Of The People," and he needs to get all citizens motivated. The President must get out to the cities, towns, and villages around our nation to get his message out fully. The GOP/Tea Begger "Hoodlum's On The Hill" are 'burying' a very important piece of tax legislation that has already passed the US Senate. Our representatives need to get the message loud and clear. Every citizen needs to get involved!
The only hoodlums are Obama and the Socialist Democrats in congress. Just like other Socialist countries like Cuba and North Korea where only the socialist leaders have the money so will it be with Obama, Clinton and all the Socialist Democrat leaders. they will be living in luxury while we are all starving and dieing from poor health care.
Oh, he's getting everyone involved allright. He wants to thank you personally for bailing out the GM unions. Thanks for sharing your healthcare, and thanks so much for sharing more of your money in 2013.
Here's the bottom line. When Obama creates a healthcare plan and says "Michelle, the girls and I are the first to sign up" then I'll buy in. When he and Pelosi and Reid forced this piece of crap on us and then opt out for their Cadillac plan I find it pretty hard to stomach. ESPECIALLY, since I am paying for their's as well as mine...
What the Republicans and everyone else needs to remember is that this is not so much politicing as it is just Obama being a Neighborhood organizer. He is just taking it to the national level now and that is what needs to be countered.
Think about this if socialism worked the USSR would be the most prosperous nation in the world, oh wait a minute, The USSR dosen't exist anymore.
It's really difficult to believe I'm reading these comments on the internet - to read about having to stay in DC to get any work done implies our president cannot work remotely. Well get a clue - many of us work remotely as often as we like - and get quite a bit of work done, thank you. If I can do it I'm sure the President of the United States can be just as effective remotely as locked up in DC - possibly more effective in the long run.
As for sitting down and talking to the Republican members of congress - we know that doesn't work from the experience of the first term. Talking to the constituents of those same Republicans might just be able to do a few things that talking to the congress critters face to face won't - namely put some pressure on them to do what the people they represent want them to do. As has been pointed out, this is a representative republic, not a direct democracy, but ultimately the power is in the hands of the people doing the electing so going to the power source makes the most sense in some cases - and this is most definitely one of those cases.
If the president goes to the people and makes a case for his plans and the people approve - then the folks representing those people had better pay attention or get ready to find new jobs come 2014. Ultimately the president will be more effective if he can put together a Democratic congress come 2014 than trying to bargain with the blockade mentality of the current GOP House. Going to the people is a win-win for the president. Win now by persuading the people to pressure their representatives to cross the aisle and support the president or win later by getting his own majority in the house.
That's really why all these GOP nuts are so critical of his travel plans - they know he's on track to render them completely irrelevant.
You really are blinded by Obama, aren't you?
If you really believe that those "GOP Nuts" (again, so like Obama, just call names & deflect) those 49% that voted AGAINST HIM are going to listen to any of his lies, well then I have some oceanfront property in Arizona that I can sell you.
I am a Democrat and I stopped listening to him in 2009. Do you really think all Dems are going to listen to him too?
And I suspect you will see more of those seats taken over by the GOP in 2014 as the country continues to slide and your messiah does nothing but go on traveling and blowing hot air. Just like 2010, the people will revolt again, because the hidden taxes in Obamacare will continue to hurt the middle class, that's right, the middle class that has suffered the most under Obama.
My boss was given the info of how the taxes are going to hit him in January and today he laid off 4, all were Obama supporters. I happen to agree with my boss on this, if you voted for him, you should be the first to take the hit.
Since when do the people get a chance to approve anything Obama does? I certainly didn't approve of Obamacare just like the majority of people in the US and yet he rammed it down our throats and THEN... he's taking away from my plan to redistibute it to others. I wish to God I had a chance to "approve" the sh&t this guy is doing. He is a farce. He is a wanna-be celebrity and this is what America has come to.
Keep your eye on California. It's all dems 24/7 now. that place used to be a paradise. Let's watch it go bankrupt shall we?
Pretty sure California already is, they got the lovely voucher for pay thing going again.
In the last four years, millions of Americans have been laied off of work or took pay cuts, thousands of companies have shut down or filed bankrupcy, millions of Americans have lost their retirment savings. Meanwhile Barack and Michelle Obamas wealth has jumped up and they are living in luxury. They throw lavish parties at the white house that include flying in kobe beef from Japan at $100. a pound and Michelle Obama wears designer clothe to these parties that cost thousands of dollars and these parties cost us taxpayers millions of dollars. all while demanding that the top 2% pay thier fair share. Isn't Socialism just great for the rulers. However it is not so great for the ruled
