Democrats on Rice fight: Bring it on

Democrats say despite today’s McCain-Graham-Ayotte press conference, they are ready and willing to fight for Amb. Susan Rice to be secretary of state.

“People are happy to fight for her,” a Democratic Senate aide said. In fact, the aide said, those that think what happened today gives Democrats any pause on Rice’s nomination, should think again.

"This is getting people’s back up,” the aide said. “The general sense of the mood is this is ridiculous. She’s obviously qualified. … No one on our side thinks there’s any substance whatsoever to the Republican criticisms.”

The aide added, “All signals are that [Obama’s] going to nominate her. Everybody’s sort of gearing up for that. It’s a battle, and I think we win because something else has to drop to fatally wound her [Rice]. This is not enough. It depends on how the hearings go.”

The aide also questioned whether Republicans besides McCain, Graham, and Ayotte would think this is a “smart fight to pick.” After all, it would be a “high profile fight with a qualified African-American woman.”

If Rice presents well at her confirmation hearing, if she’s nominated, and rebuts her critics, the aide said there’s a “good chance cooler heads prevail” and there would be more than enough votes to confirm her.

As to Sens. Kelly Ayotte’s and Lindsey Graham’s threats to place holds on a Rice nomination, the aide called that “moot,” because “either we have the votes or we don’t.”

On McCain-Graham-Ayotte’s press conference today, the aide said, “I was stunned. I thought the meeting was a face-saving way for everyone to back down. I was really surprised. It shows this has turned into a total vendetta for them.”

The aide added that “the larger question is if the president wants to spend the political capital.” And if he does, Democrats are ready to fight.

For those thinking Obama might instead avoid the fight and go with Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a likely shoo-in for confirmation, the aide noted that it’s well known that Majority Leader Harry Reid doesn't want to lose the potential vote.

"high profile fight with a qualified African-American woman."

There has been a very distinct pattern over the past 4 years when it comes to the behavior of the GNOP towards any African-American in President Obama's administration.

When is Daryl Issa going to apologize to Eric Holder?

Strange... even Joe Liebermann was satisfied with Dr. Rice's explanation today...

But NOT these three low-lifes and their "witch hunt"!

Little Lindy Graham came right out and said it is a VENDETTA!

Stick that in your pipe and SPIN it!

Are McCain, Graham and Ayotte: BRAVE ENOUGH to pay more in taxes, and put our country back on track?

Will they work with House GOP to extend the tax cut for the middle class?

How BRAVE are they?

Just brave enough to go after a young, brilliant, african-american woman, who has done a brilliant diplomatic job as United Nations Ambassador?

A woman who cares about our NATIONAL SECURITY?

These two yahoos, McCain and Graham are trying so hard not to appear to be the bullies they are, so they bring (maybe bully too) Kelly Ayotte R-NH to bolster their position......and she foolish woman and party hack, provides them with some cover.

This whole episode is nothing but contrived outraged. Their false attacks on Dr. Susan Rice, a highly qualified African-American woman is a disgrace. Between these two idiots Dr. Rice has more intelligence in her little toe than they have between.

But again, I blame the media, in giving these two, more airtime than they deserve.

ntelligence officials: We knew attack in Benghazi was terrorist act from beginning

November 19, 2012, 7:50pm, PST

By Andrea Mitchell, NBC News

"…That's why, they said, they kept their unclassified talking points for Rice vague to avoid compromising future legal proceedings…A senior intelligence official told NBC News that members of the intelligence community changed the reference from al-Qaida to "extremists" NOT anyone from the White House who had a political agenda…So why were those unclassified talking points created in the first place? ... If the republican party lets the two crabby Muppet's in the balcony wage this fight, they will pay a heavy political price, what don't they understand about not being able to win national elections without the votes of blacks and women. Rice has done nothing wrong and is well qualified for the job, and these two guys will be the face of the GOP and will represent exactly what the general electorate is fed up with from republicans. They will insure that the democrats will turn out the vote for the mid-terms, I guess they just need to continue to be punished until they learn their lesson. Rice will dance on their political graves, or at least the political graves of republicans who will lose their seats on account of them. Well just what is the difference between racism and stupidity, the only thing I can think of is that you can be stupid without being racist, but you can't be racist without being stupid. You can moan about it all you want when people point it out, but the political fact is that the republican party is largely seen as stupid or racist, take your pick, or deny it if you wish, but the numbers with which they lost to Latino, black, and women's votes is staggering. These are hard facts, votes counted, not a poll, the general electorate weighed in and republicans are doomed in future general elections if they can't change the electorates perception.

They have no clue that there are no "Poltical Points" to score here however, "Insane McCain" has a huge "Political Ax" to grind with the President. He has no intention of wanting justice, and he has blind blood thirsty 'revenge' on his "Brain Washed Mind." This is the biggest "Nothing" in US Political History by "Insane McCain." This is the GOP/Tea Beggers back in 2009 planned to "Attack and Distract" the President on every issue. I wonder if this is just strategy on the part of the Evil Three. Do what they can to stop or put on hold the nomination thus possibly forcing president Obama to choose Sen. Kerry for the position of SOS. This would leave his seat open and a chance for the revolting party to stick Scott "I drive a truck" Brown back in there. His loss has gotta hurt and it would not surprise me if he were not working "undercover" in all of this.

I think she can as well, but there is that "hold" rule that all three have threatened they will put on Rice if president Obama appoints her. Then it would take cloture and blah blah blah. I want O to put the screws to those three really bad, stand up to them and do it just to show them that HE is the two term president and they can eat @!$%#. I do agree with you that if he can't get Rice in there then it would be best to keep Kerry where he is and make another choice for SOS. Unless of course there is someone on our side who could beat Scott "I drive a truck" Brown for the seat. I don't know who that may be. Any idea? I don't know much about the game of Chess, but I do know it is about maneuvering and out playing your opponent. This is what politics is all about and now that president Obama has been in the WH for four years I have no doubt that he is more than ready to play a championship game of Chess with the Republicans.

This whole controversy over the talking points is sheet nuts anyway. As Jon Hunstman said, there would be some initial confusion due to the fog of war. Does anyone seriously think Ms. Rice lied because somehow an enraged mob killing 4 Americans in a country for which Obama went to bat for the Libyan people by helping to overthrow Gaddafi would be better politically than a terrorist attack? That is upside down logic if I ever heard it. This is nothing more than a shiny object left over from the Presidential election that the sore losers on the right can't let go of.

There were calls for help that went unanswered.

Rice read the classified report that indicated that it was an AL Qaeda attack then spewed the video story as she was instructed.

Simple'

I'll make it real clear. The director of the CIA, and the intelligence community are the ones who deal with intelligence, called classified information. The intelligence community wrote the talking points and took the word terrorism, Al-Quada out. The White House had nothing to do with this. Intelligence is also called spying, secrets, secrecy, and classified information. Homeland Security and the FBI also are privy to this information. What part of National Security issues regarding classified information don't you guys get. The general public is not privy to it, and many congressional members aren't privy to it.

Leaking classified information is a serious matter. No breach of national security was done. The intelligence community rewrote the talking points and Susan Rice followed normal National Security protocol. Why are you so upset regarding national security issues and classified information, the general public is not privy to this information. Much of Iraq and Afghanistan are still classified.

As part of the lies Susan Rice was spewing at the behest of our racist-in-chief was that Al Quada was decimated because bin Laden was dead. The "President's hand-picked CIA Director" is a REPUBLICAN. Could it be he only wanted Rice to know what HE wanted her to know? Nothing would surprise me!

Simple is fresh out of the box as of ths month. Given the "intelligence" of their posts, I'm sure they will step in it soon enough and be banned again. Carry on AG, Jackie, Seeking, & Suzq and pay the re-reg no mind.

    #7.10 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 10:14 PM EST

Suzq... Sorry to burst your bubble...but Petreaus already testified he reported immediately that it was an Organized attack...he then did not turn around and write B.S. AND misleading talking points because ...well then he would have had to testify he did that...or he goes to jail for lying under oath. He also testified he did not know who changed his talking points.

Also ...please dont forget our President said he told the American Public it was a Terroristic attack the day after in the Rose Garden... so does that make him a liar? or Susan Rice...Because our President says what he means and means what he says......Somebody is lying in the Administration...can you guess who?

I have friends in foreign service at embassies in Africa. According to them Stevens was CIA, didn't want security interferring with his ability to be out among the people of Libya. He even jogged through the streets unaccompanied. He wasn't assassinated - he died in a safe room of the fire started at the Embassy. Why was the chief and deputy chief of the Benghazi mission NOT in Benghazi?

How can Japan function with debt one and a half times higher then their GNP and yet their long term debt sells for under 1.5%?

Can you please name one country that has tried your economici theories where it WORKS???????

Not thinking long term/ I do not understand where you objectionists are coming from nor where you are going to. It appears to me that you are saying that as the rich can't pay off our monstrous debts by themselves that we should not expect them to go back to their former tax bracket. This can't make sense so would you tell us what you mean?

The lady has two decades worth of incompetence and idiocy that says she's not worthy to be Secretary of State. It was her advice which led the other documented Liar-in-Chief to proclaim it was the lowest point of his 8 years in office. Yes, even lower than Lewinsky or dealing with Chinese criminals. And he was a man with many lowpoints.

Our inept Racist-in-Chief should spare the citizens more embarassment by not nominating her.

Republicans are trying to make a big issue out of nothing. I don't care if there was some mistaken information bandied about for a few days. It seems like it was just a mistake and it didn't have negative effects on anything important. To hear the Republicans tell it, you'd think that the mistaken explanation about the cause of the attack was the cause of the attack!

The quest for the truth continues .... while Obama runs off, campaigning yet again to "SELL" his ideas of raising taxes that are woefully insufficient to reduce the national deficit.

Here's the real deal that Demmies don't want to hear because it will make them look foolish: Obama has no real desire to reach a "fiscal cliff settlement ! Obama WANTS THE BUSH TAX CUTS TO EXPIRE ... then he will have more revenue to redistribute. Taxes will go up on everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do you think the Bush Tax Cuts were only extended until just AFTER the Nov, 2012 elections ???

Rice said she was relying on information from the intelligence community, but the head of the intelligence community says “We knew the attack in Benghazi was terrorist act from beginning” Rice was just saying what Obama told her to say, and now she is lying to protect him.

With each new revelation, more of Obama's lies and coverup are exposed. The time is coming when even the most delusional Obama apologist will be forced to admit the truth.

The undeniable fact is that it was a terrorist attack.

For months knowledgeable State Department experts, including Amb. Stevens, had been warning that the Benghazi Mission was pitifully unprotected. They literally begged for more security. During that whole time, Obama refused to acknowledge the danger and denied all requests.

Finally, on September 11th, the attack that Obama had refused to believe in, happened. Obama knew immediately that it was a terrorist attack, and that he was responsible for leaving the Mission helpless. I'm sure the President experienced a horrible sinking sensation when he realized the he had made a catastrophic error so serious that it bordered on treason. Instead of mitigating his blunder by immediately sending military support to Benghazi, he covered it up by refusing all the pleadings for help. He fabricated a story out of thin air that it was a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film, because the truth would have exposed his incompetence just prior to the election.

The truth is emerging like a rising tide that will eventually drown this corrupt President.

Suzq - so you think Petraeus lied about knowing immediately it was a terrorist attack. Interesting theory. What, then, is your theory as to why Obama denied security to the Mission in the months before the attack and continued to withhold security during the attack?

I would also like to hear your theory as to why Rice maintained for two weeks that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film. She offered no evidence to support that contention. Not the slightest shred of evidence EVER indicated a spontaneous protest The attack started in late evening and went on to 5 in the morning. Not a single report or photograph indicated protestors with the usual crude signs. Just well armed terrorists with heavy weapons and clear pre-planning.

And yet Rice continued to insist it was a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.

What's your theory about that Suzq?

No more theories Suzq? Here's mine, then. Obama initiated a covert program to smuggle weapons from Qaddafi’s stockpiles to the Muslim Brotherhood rebels in Syria. These included shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles and perhaps anti-personnel land mines and chemical weapons. He then realized that if some of those weapons ended up being used against us and our allies, he would be held responsible. His only option was to leave the Mission completely helpless and hope that all signs of his mistake would be wiped out by the inevitable destruction, murder and looting of the Mission by a local Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group.

WMD's do not have to be nuclear weapons. WMD's are weapons that kill mass amounts of people when deployed on the battle field.

Included in the definition of WMD's area also biological weapons and POISON GAS. You know like the poison gas used on Kurds by Sadam?????

They ignore their responsibilities as public servants and their oath of office, to waste time with their childish temper tantrums. I cannot find the words to explain the disgust and disdain I feel every time I see their faces or hear their voices. This country would be so much better off if people like them would be institutionalized to get the care mental cases need. We cannot survive four more years with republicons doing nothing but trying to destroy this COUNTRY for some twisted political vendetta.

It seems obvious to me that these 3 had no intention of listening to anything Rice said. Just more Republican obstructionism.

Funny...most of these people on the forum would automatically think we are Hard Core Republicans...Not just somebody who has a thorough disgust for this Administration and the lack of Leadership as well as their lack of knowledge when it comes to the Economy. These people think if you raise the taxes on the wealthy all of their problems would go away.....That is the Divide and conquer rule of this President . Take care.. enjoy your vacation .. I am sure we will meet up on another blog.

Yes I am a "dyed in the wool" middle class, not even close to being a 1%ter. I am just an average Joe, with and average job trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collector.

But I make to much money to qualify for "entitlements" and barely enough to stay afloat.

I am not a "homo-phobe"(don't care just don't see the need for sexual "terrorists" demanding I must, they don't care about me).

I don't hate women( I had to pay for my own contraception, I think everyone should take responsibility for their own, but would not be in favor of a law that makes it harder to "get some" just love children so I do not support using ABORTION as a contraception since there are plenty of products out there to prevent pregnancy, again personal responsibility).

My wife and I had 2 children in 15 years of marriage, had a great sex life but didn't need to abort mistakes.

Not a racist, am a proud family member of a DIVERSE family(love all equally), my AVATAR is of my great grandson(who looks more like Obama than me) who died in July of SIDS at 2 1/2 months, and broke my heart.

I do not HATE anyone, even our President. I do believe however in fiscal conservatism(hand up, not hand out) and believe his policies are destructive.

I would even go as far as supporting HIM, if he would ADMIT the last 4 years were a mistake and did a 180.

But that won't happen, liberals never have seen an "entitlement" to expensive.......or a tax to HIGH.

I don't think you are "hardcore Republicans", but there is ZERO doubt you are BOTH hardcore ignorant SO CALLED Americans. Who obviously are literally clueless as to not only why you are REALLY out of work, but also to ignorant to do the RESEARCH to explain it. So what do you do instead? You bash President Obama. So let's go at it.

"Mruseurhead" The REAL reason construction has gone through such a rough period was AND IS the continuing fallout from the REBUBLICAN/CONSERVATIVE/GWB economic policies that began under Ronald Reagan, are still in place and led DIRECTLY to the recession we are slowly recovering from. And that was combined with the blatant obstructionism of REPUBLICANS in the House and Senate who refused to pass ANY bills that would help the economy. And that included a larger "Stimulus" (which did work by the way) and other jobs related bills that would have definitely got construction back on track. You can also thank the Wall Street and the Banking/Loan industry who were giving out money like they were printing it in the basement, but have now tightened credit to the point were it is almost impossible to obtain it for the majority of Americans. And that INCLUDES construction loans.

"mike-Pa" They are "shutting down local power plants" because they were to expensive to operate, the economy, the area already has over capacity and they were and are MAJOR POLLUTERS.

"Steve Davies, a GenOn spokesman, said the Elrama and Niles, Ohio, closings this year are driven by economic conditions, including the high price of coal and lower electricity demand.

"They were struggling independent of environmental regulations. They are less efficient and more expensive to operate," he said. "The other, later closures are triggered by environmental regulations that take effect in 2015." Mr. Davies said the three Western Pennsylvania plant closures will result in a loss of 180 jobs -- 60 at Elrama, 40 at New Castle and 80 at Shawville. All of those workers, as well as workers at other power plants scheduled to close, can apply for job openings at other GenOn power plants, he said. The eight closures will reduce the company's power output by 3,120 megawatts to 19,490 megawatts nationwide. It had previously announced two other power plant closures in Virginia and California and one new power plant in California that will come on line in mid-2013.

Lisa Graves-Marcucci, a community outreach coordinator with the Environmental Integrity Project, a national environmental organization, said GenOn is "doing the right thing" by shutting down the Elrama plant, which has not operated full time for several years. "They had to make a decision whether to clean it up or bring it down. It's been a bad performer for a long time," said Ms. Graves-Marcucci, who lives in Jefferson, near the power plant. "Either way, it would be good for the health of people living nearby." Total annual health costs caused by 2009 pollution emission levels at Elrama, New Castle and Shawville are $836,000,000, based on a pollution-to-health-effects formula in a 2009 study by Harvard University researchers led by Jonathan Levy.

The Sierra Club hailed the closures as a "victory for clean air" and, citing data from the Clean Air Task Force, a national environmental advocacy organization, said pollution emissions reductions because of the plant closures will prevent more than 179 premature deaths, 300 heart attacks and 2,800 asthma attacks.

"Above all, this is a win for public health and for families who have been breathing polluted air from these outdated plants," said Bruce Nilles, senior director of Sierra's Beyond Coal campaign. "GenOn has recognized that operating outdated, dirty coal plants just doesn't make economic sense anymore, especially in a time when constructing a wind farm is now cheaper than building a new coal plant."

The GenOn deactivations will not significantly reduce regional electricity supply, which remains much higher than demand, said Paula DuPont-Kidd, a spokeswoman for PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity for 60 million people in the District of Columbia and 13 mid-Atlantic states, including Pennsylvania."

And I am sure you are going to bring up the fact that President Obama is going after coal fired plants that refuse to upgrade their emissions controls. These companies had years to do it themselves. They refused. If you want to blame anybody, blame the company YOU WORK FOR. Not the president.

And last but from from least I have plenty of additional ammunition in my foot locker based on SOLID RESEARCH AND FACTS, so as I said previously, let's go at it. You both state opinions and speculation with ZERO facts to back it.

Stimulus worked for WHO???? The UNIONS? GM still teetering on bankruptcy? And I live on the LEFT COAST and I will tell you how great wind farms are........there ripping us off. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have DAMS (already built years ago)

BUT HYDRO power is not GREEN according to you leftist environmental wackoes. (WHAT IS MORE GREEN THAN RIVER WATER OR MORE RENEWABLE IT RAINS LIKE HELL OVER HERE).

But OH NO...we gotta have WIND....ITS GREEN AFTER ALL....and so what happens??

Well when it rains and snows alot over here..its not FAIR to the WIND PROVIDERS and it is against the LAW to sell excess power to other States............

SO...........we as rate payers MUST pay for the lost revenue when wind generators are shut down..........

and that is just a small example of your so called PROGRESSIVE B/S.

Worked at Elaram... yea officially they have to put a reason for closing. By the way ...you really do not hve real clue aboput the Power Industry in my area. Why do you think there is a skeleton crew in Elrama...do you know why ..of course you dont. They will be starting that plant up in a few years to rid their coal contracts and start again. Fossil Fuels are huge in the Pittsburgh area...yes if you keep upping the air quality standards to the point where you can not achieve because you run out of money to build equipment for those standards...well the reason you close down the plant ...Economic reasons . Mr Facts .. I am sure you were not aware of the Coal Contract Mr Facts..the way you are prtraying the Plants trying to reach Emission standards are not even close...as much as you want to make it Black and White. Yes the the President Indecisive Energy Policy is what is causing the lack of work. You see Mr Facts,.....the owners of Power Plants have "Boat Loads of Money to spend".. They will not spend the money until they know what Standards will be put in place...see you really do not know the situation unless you are on the ground at Union meetings (who talk to the owners) It is easy to read and article and think you know...sorry ...you really dont know the situation. Most Fossil plants close because it takes too much money to reach the new Emission Standards...So the result they give for closing...well they are Economic..You get it? Yes this is my Industry...Believe me ..I think I know a little about it....

I use to be hard core Democrat.... My Grandfather was the first B.A ever for the Local 2 Insulators.

Use to be ..Dems get into office ...raise the Emission standard enough to put people back to work...Now they raise it to shut down Fossil Fuel Plants. Go figure...

The funny thing is ... I have a hard copy of the article you copied up on your screen. The part you really do not have a grip on...are the true realities of the situation. If you are shutting Elrama down ...Why the Skeleton crew...I gave you an answer you will not find in an article. Yes they close for Economic reasons...The Economic Reasons are not always the way you may perceive them. I do appreciate you at least having some interest though.

The obstruction of Rice's nomination is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt by the Republicans to get John Kerry nominated, thus vacating his senate seat. They hope to fill Kerry's empty seat with another one of their crooks, most likely Scott Brown, who was defeated this election by a Democrat, Elizabeth Warren.

With the Republicans, it is NEVER about what the country wants. It's ALWAYS about "I want MY way, and I will do anything dishonest to get it."

And ONE SEAT in the Senate won't do anything as far as MAJORITY goes......

.........Al Qaeda was in HIDING........and Obama had a sterling record on foreign policy

It MAY have damaged Obamas re-election if the TRUTH that it was an al Qaeda attack came out BEFORE the election.
