Amb. Rice to meet with McCain, other senators

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, the woman who could be President Obama's pick to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, heads to Capitol Hill today for closed-door meetings with Republican senators in an attempt to explain her comments about the Benghazi terrorist attacks.

UPDATED 9:06 AM ET, Nov. 27: Amb. Susan Rice will be on Capitol Hill the next two days to meet privately with select senators, including Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), regarding the attacks in Benghazi last September, Capitol Hill and State Department sources tell NBC News.

Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, requested two meetings with senators this week. On Tuesday, she'll meet with McCain, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R), and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH).

On Wednesday, Rice will meet with with Maine Sen. Susan Collins, the top Republican on Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

Another hint of Rice's clout and the White House's intention to armor her, Acting CIA Director Mike Morrell will accompany her on all her Senate meetings. It was the CIA  that wrote the unclassified talking points - that went through Director of National Intelligence Gen. James Clapper - that she says she relied "solely and squarely on" when doing those Sunday talk shows on Benghazi.

These are significant because McCain, Graham and Ayotte are prominent GOP national-security voices and have been among Rice's harshest critics for her handling of the situation in Benghazi.

Asked about McCain's criticism last week, Rice said, "I do believe some of the statements he has made about me are unfounded, and I look forward at the appropriate time to have a chance to respond."

Most notably, Republicans have seized on her appearance on Meet the Press days after the attack, in which she said the administration believed an inflammatory video had been at least partially responsible for the violence in Benghazi, which killed four Americans, including an ambassador. It was later revealed to be a terrorist plot.

On Sunday, McCain was noticeably less critical of her, saying: "I'd give everyone the benefit of explaining their position and the actions that they took. I'd be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with her."

Rice is thought to be among the final two -- Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee being the other -- to be considered by President Obama to replace outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Rice has not been nominated yet, but all signs are pointing toward her being the president's first choice. If she were nominated, the Senate would have to confirm her.

Kerry, ironically, would chair her confirmation hearings. If Rice is nominated to succeed Clinton, it is possible Kerry would be nominated to be Secretary of Defense.

McCain said Rice called him to request the meeting with him as well as Ayotte and Graham. Ayotte said the meeting is crucial to her ability to decide whether Rice is fit to be Secretary of State.

"If President Obama nominates her for Secretary of State, I would hold the nomination until sufficient answers regarding the Benghazi attack were given, then judge based on those answers," Ayotte said. She added that it "would be helpful to see some documents."

Those documents will likely come with Morell.

McCain said he has a number of questions for Rice, and hopes this meeting will clear up concerns he's had with Rice's characterization of the attack.

"My concerns are obviously that she told the American people things that were patently false, that were not true," McCain said, "and that, as I said at the time, people don't go to demonstrations with mortars and rocket propelled grenades. But most of this goes back to the the president and his responsibility, and his failure to tell the American people the truth in the second debate that he had with Mitt Romney when he said he had called it a terrorist attack in the Rose Garden when, in fact, he hadn't. The president is the one who's responsible."

The president did, in fact, use the phrase "acts of terror" in his White House address from the Rose Garden that McCain references. "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for," Obama said.

But the president did not make clear that he believed the attacks were a terrorist plot - not the result of a the anti-Islamic video. Obama, in fact, alluded to the video when he said that the U.S. is "a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others.  But there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. None."

FWIW Senator Ayotte's presence is merely to add validity to McCain and Graham's attacks.

They pull her out as the token female very much in the same way that Beohner pulls Cathy McMorris-Rogers out to validate their anti-woman stances. They really don't go to Kay Baylie Hutchinson anymore. She's "too old" and left to circuiting the Sunday shows on occasion to mumble support.

I'm sure there's a benefit to be used in this manner, but I sure as hell don't see it, and it just makes them look weak, and as uniformed as their male counterparts.

Typical politics as usual.

So why did Obama choose Rice to go on the Sunday talk shows?

All Ms. Rice has to do is tell specifically "who" (name), gave her the information she told the american people on those news programs. And "when" (exact date/time) that person gave her the information. From what I've read she has not done so as of yet. Always referring to the intelligence community, etc. without any specifics.

Exactly......Who came up with this fairy tale???? Who decided to go with this story days after the truth was known? It has been said that the reference to terrorist activities was in the initial talking point but were later deleted...That had to be done be someone in this administration......Answer that and you'll find the truth.....

Are the both of u two little children or something. I mean do ya'll have cable TV. It has already been said on all the cable news shows that the Intellegence Department Head person gave the talking points to Susan Rice. The head of that department publicly said he was the one who change the talking points prior, I repeat Prior to giving it to Susan Rice. Hell you can even go to Google and find this information.

Are ya'll that stupid to know this, I mean c'mon now. If 1 of you ask again who gave her the talking points, who change the talking points one more time. Your stupidity will be proven to everybody on FR.

          #52.2 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 2:00 PM EST

          Wb52 an William,

The person who gave and changed the talking points is "The Director of National Intellegence".

          His name is James Clapper.

Does any of this information make any sense to ya'll now. Or are the both of you to stupid to realize the FACTS when its right there in your face.

William, you said you are tired of her referring to the intel community. Hello dummy, what else is she suppose to refer to if thats where she received her information from. Let me guess she should refer to Santa Claus, right.

            #52.3 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 2:19 PM EST

Santa Claus or Fox News - same difference.

Jason797, Took your advice and googled it. James Clapper "took responsibility" for the changes "his office" made to Ms. Rice's talking points. But nowhere can I find anything where he admits to "personally" making the changes, and has not named the person who actually made them. Taking responsibility for something that happened on your watch, is not the same thing. "Taking responsibility" is an old method meant to diffuse a situation without having to face any immediate consequences. Both houses, and both parties are responsible for our current fiscal mess. Tell us what consequences anyone in office has personally suffered? Or, what personal consequences Hillary Clinton has suffered for taking responsibility for the murder of our ambassador and three other Americans? Even a dummy can figure out that game!

When American lives are lost America as a whole has united in its grief and efforts to bring to justice those at fault. Now what we see from Republicans is any chance to pounce on an opportunity to undermine the Obama Administration comes before Patriotism. Maybe the Republican Party should take a long hard look at itself and start to understand what they are put into office for. Not their own selfish agendas.

We need to know what drives wb52 to be the pitbull he is. Why won't he listen to reasoned answers? Why is he tone deaf about facts as they are presented to him? It's as if he doesn't hear us. Or he simply ignores us. I'll bet his wife has stopped talking to him because he ignores her all the time anyway. Maybe we should do the same. We are wasting our breath because he doesn't want to hear answers that don't match his preconceived notions about the guy who beat his guy in the last election.

                      Hey Johnny3621820,

Can't really take the Democrats too seriously either. I mean look at what they've brought to this country. America, as a nation, doesn't even have an idea of who Barack Obama is. He's the one American President that so many people know so little about. What we were sold was the the pre-packaged, reality show, image of a president. The man is a proven pathological liar. The man can't even get his own birthday straight (nevermind where he was born). He has put the needs of the rest of the world before the needs of Americans. That's no way to lead a nation.

His deeds, and not his sound bites are what should have won him the election. Four more years of this train wreck of a president and I'm afraid there won't be much of an America left to rebuild. But hey, this is the guy that 51% of those that voted wanted. One thing is certain.... to criticize a world leader for his INEPTITUDE is NOT a racist statement (despite what every living Democrat will tell you.).

Come on, Jimmy, read the charts. You can dislike president Obama, but the economic charts would prove you uninformed. And you act like nothing is known about our president. He has faced the most corrosive scrutiny from the far right with nothing other than bogus claims about being a foreign born person being put forth. Now, just how do you feel about Mitt Romney skating on a religious deferment in France for 30 months. Put your focus on the real duds in politics.

If you like to examine train wrecks, just look at one of the engineers who tried to dedicate the Republican party to making Obama a one-term president, Mitch McConnell. He helped wreck his party and the nation with that obscene focus. And you don't think McCain hasn't been sucking on sour grapes since he went down in 2008? Get a grip, boy, and read some real news and investigate the facts. Your tirade has more holes in it than Osama bin Laden.

He'll destroy this economy, all will share equally in low living standards, and lefties will not be elected again for decades.

                                              Gee thanks rebel,

I noticed how you didn't have any complaints when Bush was in the WH and getting everything that he wanted, remember all his loyal bushies... But I guess that depends on your definition of moron, right???

p.s. the economy was already destroyed when he got into office...

you forget Bobby Bush spent a lot keeping his leftie dems in Congress happy in return for war support. ever consider that dum-dum? No? Pres. Drug Benefit but one example.

Read more, comment less, get educated in the meantime, then get back to us.

P.S. Bush's economic policies had nothing to do with the banking/mortgage collapse in Sept. '08 moron. Keep using O's talking points that Bush's 8 years of economic policy created the collapse of banks in late 2008.

Keep infering we lost 700K jobs per month for most of the Bush presidency instead of the three months it occurred after the collapse. Disreagrd TARP and the fct that Bush stabilized the economy with it and not Obama as he claims he did in April 2009.

Ignore that almost all of the $800B in TARPloans have been repaid with interest. How much of Obama's $880B stimulus has been repaid? A few teacher, cops and GM jobs? Where's the dough Bobby?

keep spinning the tales there rebel,

TARP money doesn't flow immediately - but nice try... Bush policies of limiting regulation are the direct cause of the banking collapse - but nice try... I didn't infer that Bush was losing 700K jobs for his entire presidency - but nice try...

Fox News - Limbaugh talking points don't win any arguments here on the 'Vine, so far you are all bluster, and not much substance...

Now back to the topic at hand - McCain and his fellow Republicans eating crow after their fiasco with Amb. Rice... nice try at deflection...

Bobby - the root and core of the banking collapse was Dem policy for decades of making a mortgage available to anyone with a pulse.

Barney Frank and Chris Dodd of House and Senate Banking Committees were reminded on at least 4 occasions by Bush's number 2 at Treasury from 2001-2007 that Fannie and Frddie were holding too many bogus loans in their portfolios that could cause a major collapse in the banking industry.

First, gutless Republicans in charge of those committess didn't listen because panderers like Dodd and Frank would label them the enemies of the working poor.

Then, when Frank and Dodd were Chairmen from 2006 on to collapse they totally ignored the message. If they had listened Fannie and Freddie would not have collapsed causing the derivatives being held by invstors to become worthless.

Forget the MSLSD TV talking points you dullard and learn.

remember... McCain - Amb. Rice - Republicans...

p.s. making mortgages affordable - doesn't mean not using common sense... Aren't these business guys smarter than everybody else??? Aren't they the "job creators"??? Why were those smart guys so stupid???

Obviously you are completely ignorant of the mortgage rules that were in place during the early 2000's. If you denied a loan...you ran afoul of Dodd/Frank and would loose your ability to process loans onto the secondary market.

                                                    Get a clue....

                                                      thanks wb,

but I already have a clue... and nothing in Dodd/Frank forced banks to lend to people totally incapable of paying back the loans - deregulation allowed mortgage lenders to create all sorts of new "funding" like interest only, floating interest, etc. many persons that could qualify for a traditional 30 year mortgage were instead given these new types of loans just so that mortgage companies could make a higher profit.

You and rebel need to get back on topic, instead of trying to deflect and regurgitate old Republican BS talking points...

Nuance is not part of their vocabulary. Nor is waiting to see just exactly what happened. They must have taken the same lessons that Mitt Romney did; ready, fire, aim. Time for the old dog to retire.

09/22/2012 Libyan protesters ousted a jihadist militia from its headquarters and seized a raft of other paramilitary bases in second city Benghazi early Saturday in heavy clashes that left four people dead.

The seizure of the headquarters of Ansar al-Sharia — which has been accused of, but denied, involvement in the murder of US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans last week — came after tens of thousands took to the streets on Friday to protest against the power of the militias.

The group’s members took flight as hundreds of protesters stormed and then torched its compound, and also evicted it from the city’s Al-Jalaa hospital, where they were replaced by military police, an AFP correspondent reported.

The trigger for the assault on the paramilitaries was a “Save Benghazi” protest after the main weekly Muslim prayers on Friday that was joined by some 30,000 peaceful demonstrators.

It drowned out a smaller rally attended by just a few hundred people called by the jihadists and hardline Islamists angry over a US-made film that mocks Islam and cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed published by a French magazine.

Demonstrators paid tribute to Ambassador Stevens and the other Americans killed in the September 11 assault on the US consulate in the city that Washington now says was a “terrorist” attack.

“Libya lost a friend,” read one banner. “We want justice for Stevens,” said another.

Jihadist militants of Ansar al-Sharia fired in the air as they retreated from their headquarters in the face of the overwhelmingly superior numbers of the protesters.

Libya specialist Jason Pack said that the scale of the anti-militia protest in Benghazi showed the “depth and breadth of support for the United States that prevails in Libya in the wake of the attack on Ambassador Chris Stevens.”

“Now with the people calling for a hardline anti-militia policy, Libyan leaders may find themselves steeled with the requisite courage to purge these groups from the Libyan body politic,” Pack said.

                                                                      #68.1 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 11:39 AM EST

The bottom line is this: Now that blacks are no longer the free servants of white ppl...whites don't want us in this country at all. If we are not willing to scrub floors for pennies or baby-sit little, rotten, spoiled-ass, white kids and clean up after YOUR LAZY ASSES; then we are not welcome here; in this America!!! Some white ppl are coming around and seeing the truth, its the other ones that I have a problem with!!!

She's proven to the White House & to the American people that she will do & say whatever she's told, regardless of how ridiculous it is; regardless of the facts. The clout she has in that Morrell flunkie is that he's just the mouthpiece of the CIA, put into place, just as soon as Gen. Petreaus was conveniently disposed of.

Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State is, at best, ineffective. Susan Rice at that post is going to be an absolute disaster. Bear in mind.... none of what is happeninig is by sheer coincidence or reaction to sudden developements. This is all calculated, deliberate, strategic chess moves.

This comes at a time where The Middle East is on the verge of exploding and Israel has never been more vulnerable. I think Obama's setting it up to just let it happen and, like Nero, just watching it burn. As long as he puts the needs of the whole world before the needs of Americans he will go down in history as the WORST American Persident that had ever lived.

Are you really that stupid or just that blind that you can't see beyond your political affiliation? That COW as you call her happens to be a Rhode scholar and that offends your white, superiority sensibilities, doesn't it? Sure! She hasn't done anything wrong but she is black so she is a COW; but you are an obvious COW-WARD! So you are the one with the real problem. You are all the way over here in America but you are frightened by what is happening in the middle-east as though Susan Rice is to blame for whatever happens all across this globe! If you are afraid to die; THEN YOU ARE A CERTIFIED FOOL because EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER; SOONER OR LATER! We ALL die you puke!

No one's looking at the BIG PICTURE in all of this. Gen. Petreaus sent messages in the clear to the White House, as Benghazi was being hit, that it was a TERRORIST attack (not a demonstration gone awry). Somehow... the White House got the wrong message and went PUBLIC with it (via Barack Obama & Susan Rice).

Even after it was confirmed that Petreaus' initial intelligence was indeed correct, they stuck to their story, right up until it could no longer hold water with the American media. Peteraus is then hit with media coverage of a scandalous affair & forced to resign. rather convenient, don't you think? The bimbos served their respective purposes and are no longer relevant in the news. I bet if a team of financial forensics experts were called in to do an audit, they'd find a money trail leading from these women right upto the front door of Pennsylvania Avenue.

So... here we are, not even at the beginning of Obama's 2nd term and this adminstration is already the LAUGHING STOCK of the intelligence community. His foreign policy is in the toilet. Members of his cabinet are being replaced or bailing like rats on a sinking ship and yet the media treats him like he's completely untouchable. (Being Jamie Foxx's personal savior HARDLY counts).

Why is it reporters are afraid to challenge, (or even fact check for that matter) the behaviour of a president the nation seems to know so little about?

They f--ked up so they tried to call it a spontaneous demonstration initially---then when that failed, they had to let the truth out. The Administration got caught up in the CIA's lies, which was almost as stupid as McCain endless harping on this event.

What does that say; that the only ones protesting are these Three Stooges? Tells me a lot about how far this nation has to go before it can even begin the healing process with regard to racism. This effort by McCain's Raiders reveals so much about the state of this America in the year 2012! We still have a long ways to go!!!

How can we ever expect them to get down to working with bipartisanship to resolve problems with compromise and cooperation instead of obnoxiously and belligerently always being totally irresponsible in wasting time pursuing only their own political interests, being totally without conscientious concern for doing their job for the people. It use to be that as common courtesy and for the good of the country the opposite party to the President would try to give the President his choices for appointments, thus giving him/her the opportunity to have a good working administration - today the Republican Party has become totally obnoxious and completely self-serving while attempting to aggressively fight, fault and block every step, thus constantly forcing government into a total non-productive gridlock. Can't get more disgusting and irresponsible than that.
