First Read has confirmed that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) today filed his paperwork for his 2013 re-election campaign.
The AP has more:
The technical step allows Christie to set up a campaign headquarters, hire staff and raise money toward his re-election, said the people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak before the governor makes a formal announcement in a few weeks.

Christie, who has become a national figure during his first term, is riding an unprecedented wave of popularity because of how he handled the storm. Even Democrats have applauded his hands-on response. He appeared on "Saturday Night Live" in his trademark fleece pullover this month to lampoon his own nationally televised storm briefings.
The outstanding question is whether Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) decides to challenge Christie. Booker is probably the only New Jersey Democrat capable of beating the incumbent governor.

Oh Goodee!
A Booker vs. Christie match up would be a fun race to watch...
BTW: Christie was a HOOT on SNL!
Christie is a Republican to be reckoned with. It will be fun watching him on the national stage if he chooses that path.
Feisty - He was hysterical on SNL! I always appreciate someone who can make fun of themselves. Plus, he was funny in the real interview with the media when they questioned him about Twinkies! The guy is a good sport!
Is Booker the Mayor who performed so many personal 'hero acts' to help or save citizens from dangerous situations.
Cory v Chris......wow! It would indeed be a great race.
Christie for President 2020....
.
2016: Hillary?
Christie is a shoo in ... Booker should save his dollars for another time.
He's the only republican I'd vote for today, and that's only after his manifestation of selflessness after Sandy.
Completely changed my mind about this man (Mr. Christy) after seeing him with our President and thanking him for all his and the Nations support following Sandy. The man's outspoken, but he appreciates and thanks those who help his people. Shows me class.
Future GOP Presidential candidate who may get a lot of backing from the Democrats. We'll see.
(yawn) Must be a slow news day. Yes, I realize that his filing is "NEWS" but the reality is, it's just a formality to keep his options open. Very political and totally predictable. What would be surprising would be if he actually ran for re-election and WON and then decided NOT to take the free ride and run for President in the middle of his term. NOW THAT would be news. Obviously Sarah Palin couldn't resist that temptation and look what happened to her. No Christie is no Palin, but you see what I'm saying. It look opportunistic and a betrayal of the people of New Jersey who voted for him to be their governor.
I have respect for Christie. He was a class act after Sandy. But I still don't want him as my President.
Stay in Jersey Chris. Snooki needs you.
Clinton/Castro 2016

C-Tom, my feelings exactly.
Although I think Christy tends to go overboard from time-to-time, New Jersey folks seems to like him and I thought he was a hoot on Saturday Night Live.
Probably a good guy all around.
Perhaps Christy will switch sides and become a Democrat.
Job1#1.10: He would have to, if He expected to win a national election. Republicans in the south and west hate Christi about as much as they do the President.
Christie, is as disgusting now as he was before Sandy... I don't like rude people... And I don't like the way he talks down to his audience or supporters...
Mac, it really doesn't matter if some Republicans don't like Christie. Actually, that is a bonus in my book. Especially if it is the Extreme Right. Christie has appeal outside of the Republican party and could win even if he can only get 50% of the Republicans to vote for him.
I would predict that in a national election Christie would perform extremely will with Independents, like myself, and even get a fair number of votes from the Democrat column. Much like Reagan.
@Kent from Iowa#1.13: I pretty much agree with you, however, I doubt the republican establishment would ever allow Christi the nomination. They would make sure He got killed in the Primaries.
Booker seems to be having difficulty keeping the peace on his home front lately. Wasn't there just a riot in his city council chamber a couple of weeks ago?
This would be a good race to watch. I like them both, very decent and respectable men.
Christie is bipartisan ... with common sense ... glad that New Jersey did not take away Sweet 16 (sweetened drinks over 16oz.) - that's Freedom We Can Believe In.
.
New York Bloomberg did that (taking away sweet 16).
I wouldn't say that both men are equally decent and respectable.
One believes that all the people of New Jersey deserve the same civil rights, the other thinks that the majority should vote on the civil rights of a minority.

Well, it's not as if Christie needs to lose any weight. Honestly, Christie is so big he could literally hurt his own health if he keeps chugging down 32 ounces of High Fructose Corn Syrup, which clogs the arteries.
Bloomberg is a Republican and so is Christie, but they're the kind of Republicans anybody could like.
Bloomberg seems very reasonable to me, and Christie while ostentatious seems to come down to earth pretty readily too.
I like both those guys, but I'm still an Obama Girl!
A BIG Thumbs-up to Gov. Christie's re-election. Vote for well ROUNDED leadership.
To me, challenging an incumbent always seems to have some sort of "I will undue this.." kind of a message to it. Knee jerk wise, it would seem an interesting race, but not knowing NJ politics well, I'm uncertain what 'thing' could/would Booker be challenging?
Christie's tactics may be one thing, but what legislatively could be or should be undone that NJ voters would choose another to replace him...even if they like the Challenger?
Media coverage wise, it just seems his style is more of what rubs people than the actual outcome. If that is true, that's a tough puzzle for anyone to solve.
To start with, Christie's idea that that the majority should vote on the civil rights of a minority. That's a fundamentally un-American position.
skrekk....are you still searching for anyone to listen to your position on legalizing beastiality and sheep-human marriage??? ....in a Democracy, majority rules!
As a Democrat, now that he helped get Obama reelected?
How did Christie help get Obama reelected???
Some say he sucked up to Obama.
If that is how some people look at Christie doing what he had to do to help NJ...so be it.
We're accepting applications for a new governor. in Maine no way will Tea Party governor LePage win re-election. The Tea Party experiment is OVER. Turns out cutting taxes for millionaires doesn't actually create jobs.
Booker can come to Maine and run, he'd win.
Christie wouldn't win the Republican nomination unless the Tea Party comes to their senses or he lies like Romney. Christie is way too progressive for them.
Agreed.
I see the biggest obstacle to Christie running in 2016 being the Republican Primaries. But you should also keep in mind that quite a few states independents, like myself, can vote in the Republican Primaries and if Christie runs it would be the first primary that I would actually bother to vote in. Just because it would be a chance to actually get a the Republicans to run a real candidate instead of some blow up doll that they think that they can manipulate later.
Christie earned my respect when he did what was best for his state during the major crisis that was Sandy. He and the president acted like Americans during the peak of the very volatile election and worked in the best interest of ALL the people of whom they were elected to represent. It was very refreshing to see two men on opposite sides of the political spectrum come together when it mattered most.
If Christie were to run for President he would get my vote. The man proved himself in the wake of Sandy. If all politicians acted like he did in the face of disaster they would all get along and actually get something done.
As a democrat who would have voted for Booker last month, I will have to give very serious consideration to Gov Christie's re-election campaign. As well as a Presidential run in 2016. His handling of Sandy has been tremendous.
Gov Christie would be the right one to get the republican party back on the sane track. To do so he would have to push the right wing crazies away.
I guess it's good for Christie that "Sandy" was so big...
Am sure he thinks he can ride her all the way too the White House...
Dream on....
Gorilla - That's just a horrible thing to say. I hope nothing similar happens to you or those you love.
Outstanding news. Love this guy. Saw him speak in person and actually the brash one liners are few and far between. He is charming and well spoken. I think the press love the one liners because he is funny
Mrs. Christie seems very nice and down to earth too. Wonder if Booker should wait!
Gov. Christie seems to be more of a middle of the road type of Governor than a republican.
Did you miss the 2 years of anti Obama swill coming from guvnor fatso?
Rick, yes I did. I also heard what he said when Fox news tried to make Sandy about partisan politics. He blew up on them.
You will be hard pressed to find any politician who never tows the party line. The ones you should elect are the ones who know when to drop it and do the right thing.
Chris Christie....... last of the good Republicans......wishes him, the endeavor's best....
Christy could handle the tea baggers, he wouldn't take their crap.
He would piss off the anti-evolution crowd, thus making him electable. Could you imagine the Repubs running someone sane? Hasn't happened since Ike. I think they would turn on him like a pack of wolves.
Governor Christie is really a Liberal Dem. He just hasn't quite figured it all out yet. I think he is catching on though. President Obama's side of the bread is looking better and better to Christie.
Christie is a conservative, no doubt. A real one. I am a liberal and I like Booker...but that would be a hell of an election. New Jersey couldn't lose. The armpit of the universe, and they have two great candidates. Why can't we do that nationally?
Agree.
Governor Christie offers America the Well Rounded Leadership we NEED.
VERY WELL ROUNDED...lmao
OK, all of this nonsense, for the most part people are really tired of the political bull. The big problem is that in the long run the senators and congressman/woman dont listen to their states. They listen to the dollars. Time for short term limits, get the job done and move on. Congressman ( 2 year terms) turn into Senators ( 2, 4 year terms), senators turn into Governors ( 2, 4 year terms) and than on to President ( if you have done your work). If you cant get the work done it that time, than perhaps you werent the right person for the job. If you want to run for political office, all monies need to come out of your pocket
Any republican who rejects the rabid right would definitely get a following from moderate/centrist democrats and independents.
@HotFrmPhx, yes and no. It depends on what that person's platform is, not what the GOP platform is. We saw the old white men's platform this election, and it was defeated. Do you think the regressive people would let their canadidate have a different platform? If so, I got a bridge I'll sell you, real cheap price.
Corey Booker honestly shouldn't try to beat Christie. I don't think he would be able to right now. Christie is just too popular. Just not a smart play IMO. It's probably the same reason Christie didn't challenge Obama. He didn't want to end up like Romney (lol).
If the election were held today, you might be right.
But 2 years down the road it could be a very tight race between two good choices.
If he hugs Castro, he can pick up the Communist vote.
I like Chris Christie, the guy uses any available source of support to get things done. I am concerned about his weight and the stress of his job, but I am guessing the doctors are working on him to lose weight. Good Luck Governor Christie!
Boy did Christie get a bump in his polls after working with a Democrat instead of trying to be a typical Republican!
Christie--2016!!
If not for president then at least a sturdy storm surge barrier!!!
Biggest problem he has is the GOP platform. If he wants their support, he is going to have to toe their line. A skunk cannot change it's odor. Maybe it's color, but not it's odor.
He would have a hard time convincing people he is different than the GOP base. And without the base, he wouldn't win a fat man's contest. something to think about.
