Subscribe to RSSPresident Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign infrastructure shifted gears Wednesday, beginning Phase 2 of its existence: pushing for the president’s second term agenda items.
A week after Obama for America asked supporters to take a survey on what they would want the organization to focus on post-election, the @BarackObama Twitter handle and corresponding email address sent out blasts about the president’s priorities for dealing with the fiscal cliff.
“Thanks to your feedback, we're taking immediate action on one of your suggestions: keeping you informed about how the President is fighting for you so you can continue to talk to your friends, family, and neighbors,” the email reads, above a graphic outlining Obama’s preferences for higher taxes on wealthy people, lower taxes for the middle class and $3 trillion in spending cuts.
The email, as well as an identical post on the OFA website, continues: "This is the President's plan, but he's not wedded to every detail. He is determined to work with Congress to find compromise and common ground. His guiding principle throughout this debate will be what's best for the middle class. He'll be fighting for you.”
This campaign is the first iteration of what campaign manager Jim Messina said he planned on being the extension of the successful re-election campaign.
“Some of it will absolutely live on,” Messina said at a post-Nov. 6 Politico breakfast.
Obama himself had expressed a desire to have a campaign-like apparatus in place after the election to help sell his policy agenda, coupled with more of his own outside-the-Beltway travel, something he’s previously suggested he didn’t do enough of during his first term.
“One of my pledges for a second term is to get out of Washington more often,” he said on a post-election conference call according to the Huffington Post.

The Republicans are not going to compromise. Their idea of compromise is for Obama to give in to all of their demands to protect tax cuts for the wealthy. So what I think Obama probably needs to do is push Boehner, Ryan, and McConnell off the fiscal cliff. Maybe it will bring them to their senses when they see the ground rushing up to meet them, and they'll vote for extension of the middle class tax cuts after all the tax cuts have expired on Dec. 31.

What's the REAL problem with the Debt?
I have just researched the problem with health care entitlements, and it is far worse than most people imagine. I used the President's own Budget (OMB) for 2013 as the basis for the basic information, and here are the results;
The projected Revenues for Medicare/Medicaid over the next 10 years are $2.823 Trillion.
The projected Costs for Medicare/Medicaid over the next 10 years are $11.134 Trillion.
That leaves a net Deficit in the Medicare/Medicaid programs of $8.311 Trillion, which is even greater than the total projected Federal Deficits of $6.684 Trillion over the next 10 years. In other words, if we did not have a Deficit from health care, we would have a budget SURPLUS of more than $1.6 Trillion over the next 10 years. These figures include the implementation of Obamacare.
Obviously, something needs to be done with this HUGE 'entitlement problem', but it's a shame that the media does not give us the information that we need to make intelligent choices. Here's the link to Obama's Budget to verify - See Table S-5

My recommendation – Fully fund Medicare with increased payroll taxes of about $75 per month each for employers & employees, and for Medicaid, a combination of a small deductible ($10 per doctor visit) for Medicaid beneficiaries plus a National Sales Tax of about 3% (excluding food and medicine). These simple changes would fully fund these programs and lead to a Surplus instead of huge Deficits within 10 years.
Of course, we could save an estimated $4.7 Trillion over 10 years by cutting spending by only 10% each year (We have increased spending by 27% over 2008 levels). There are several ways that we could address the Debt problem – all we need is the political will.
By the way – The proposed increase in taxes on the 'rich' would raise less than 10% of the revenues needed to overcome the Deficits (and would likely curtail job creation because it would primarily affect small businesses), so obviously something else needs to be considered. And the proposed EPA regulations will cause consumer utility bills to spike at a time when families are already struggling to make ends meet.
I welcome any comments.
Roy remember to payroll tax all income. The head of Goldman Sachs pays only 1 percent of his income in payroll tax. This would add at least 75 years to Social Security solvency. All these people who are so quick to raise the retirement age are already retired, independently wealthy or in a job they LOVE. Not all so lucky.

Clinton got away with raising taxes and not wrecking the economy because of a perfect storm consisting of personal computers, cell phones, fiber optics and the dot com new economy that crashed in 1990.

I would bet that Obama did absolutely nothing during the 7 hours they were screaming for the U.S. to help them. There was no answer. No one answering the phone. That is your Commander in Chief. He had a fundraiser to go to and did not want to be bothered with trivial matters.

Red Dev, My family and I were very lucky our house had little damage. Most of our island didn't do as well. There was no electric or gas for week and we were not allowed back on the island for weeks. I have been very busy helping our volunteer fire dept for the last week. They have done an wonderful job finding people shelter and feeding and clothing our community. We have provided all emergency workers and all those in need with three hot meals every day and we have been able to provide clothing and essential supplies. It encourages me to believe in the goodness of my fellow americans. All of you hold the ones you love close and be thankful. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
I would bet Ten-Thousand dollars that there were Republicans and Democrats affected and helping....

Perhaps Christmas is't there yet in Bostn but it started just after Halloween here in the SF Bay Area. We have been seeing political ads and Christmas ads together on TV and we get tons of ads on email etc.
Things are better here in Silicon Valley than other places in the country and maybe that is why we are getting all this. I hope people do spend as it will help the recovery speed up just a little.

Early this morning our neighbor had a surprise awakening. Some DUI hit a neighbor's bush across a low retaining wall, flipped over and skidded into the next door neihbor's yard. I picked up several bricks from the retaining wall that ended up in my yard and just inches away from one of our cars. Fortunatelly no one was hurt. The driver took it on the lam but the PD found him and took him off within about a half hour. The whole incident happened between 12:20 ish and 2:00 AM.
Our neighborhood is usually pretty calm and quiet so this gave us a little excitement.
Adler, well that's a helluva story that took place in your neighborhood. I agree, fortunately no one was hurt, including the driver. It sounds like this had the makings of a real tragedy, thankfully averted.
