Vote in 'urban areas' up, but doesn't fully explain election outcome

UPDATED Noon ET: Paul Ryan’s claimed that the “urban areas” were a principal reason for President Obama’s win. And while turnout increased in many population centers in swing states Obama won, they don't fully explain Obama's sweeping win.

“The surprise was some of the turnout, some of the turnout especially in urban areas, which gave President Obama the big margin to win this race,” Ryan claimed last week. “When we watched Virginia and Ohio coming in, and those ones coming in as tight as they were, and looking like we were going to lose them, that’s when it became clear we weren't going to win.”

With provisional ballots counted in the last few days, the president did increase his vote total in many "urban areas" in swing states he won. On Election Night, as votes were coming in, it wasn't the case that the president was running up the score.

The president's margins weren't atypical for Democrats. They run up margins in population centers, and President Obama is no different. And certainly Obama's margins in Cuyahoga County, where Cleveland is, and Northern Virginia, put the president over the edge. But they weren't unusual or particularly high.

So far, in Ohio and Pennsylvania, in fact, his vote totals are off from 2008, though ballots are still being counted and election results will change as more votes are counted. In 2008, more than nine million votes were counted after Election Day.

The one place where Obama did increase his totals significantly in population centers was Florida. There, he gained 56,000 more votes than 2008 in three counties – Miami-Dade, Hillsborough (Tampa), and Orange (Orlando). That’s 76% of his winning margin in the state.

In other swing states Obama won -- like Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nevada -- Obama increased his vote totals, but not enough to significantly impact the overall vote margins in those states.

The “urban areas" vote

FLORIDA: +56,000 (Obama’s FL margin was +74,000)
Miami-Dade: +42,000
Hillsborough (Tampa): +13,500
Orange (Orlando): +700

VIRGINIA: +12,000 (Obama’s VA margin +149,000)
NoVA (Alexandria +3,000, Arlington +2,000, Fairfax +5,000, Fairfax City +100, Falls Church +400): +9,500
Richmond: +2,000

WISCONSIN: +11,000 (Obama’s WI margin was 205,000)
Milwaukee: +800
Dane (Madison): +10,000

IOWA: +7,500 (Obama’s IA margin was 92,000)
Polk (Des Moines): +7,500

COLORADO: +6,000 (Obama’s CO margin +123,000)
Denver: +5,000
Boulder: +1,000

NEVADA: +5,000 (Obama’s NV margin was 68,000)
Clark (Las Vegas): +9,000

Cuyahoga (Cleveland): -37,000
Franklin (Columbus): -9,000
Lucas (Toledo): -14,000

PENNSYLVANIA: -61,000 (Obama’s PA margin +284,000)

It's going to be debated and analyzed for at least another six months how the President won reelection when everything was pointing to him losing, not only a close election but buy a wider margin then expected then all of sudden the reversed happened. This is why over the next six months to a year you'll see a lot of cooperation fron both the right and the left to get things done because the voted to have a government work for America and not againist each others agendas and they felt President Obama would be a better fit to make that happen instead of Mr. Romney.

I knew all those millions spent on GOP attack adds would backfire. People just get up, go to the john and get another beer when those adds came on. They knew who was paying for them, and they got insulted because they aren't as dumb as the GOP thought they were. Obama won because he has a great ground game. The Democrats are really organized. Our neighborhoods all had small Democratic headquarters. They were mobbed all the time by volunteers manning the phone banks and canvassing the neighborhoods. Personally talking with folks makes all the difference in the world. It makes them know they count. I know I convinced some people, who were probably not going to vote at all to vote Democratic. That's how you win elections. Political attack adds are useless. The GOP made the Democrats adds for them. All they had to do was run tape showing what Romney and (Eddie Munster) Ryan said. R&R seemed oblivious to the fact that everything they've said and done is recorded. It's going to be a long, long time before we trust the GOP. It's going to take a generation. That's how much damage they've done to themselves. The 'baggers still have too much control over the GOP. They are going forward with their draconian plans to do away with preventing women from control of their own bodies. A woman just bled to death in Ireland, because she was miscarrying and the doctors wouldn't help her because the fetus still had a heartbeat even though it would have died anyway. The law there says if the fetus has a heartbeat and the woman is miscarrying, they can't help her until the fetus doesn't have a heartbeat. Is that what we want here? The faux-religious extreme right has no compassion, empathy or kindness. They are cruel and heartless, and they don't care how much pain and suffering a woman goes through as long as their agenda is adhered to. No doubt about it, those right-to-lifers are the the modern-day inquisition.

I will support abortion when Libs finally admit that they are killing a living thing. Not murdering but killing non-the -less

      #30.1 - Tue Nov 20, 2012 5:05 PM EST

Ireland has a socialistic health care plan---wait until odumbos kick in. You won't even be able to get in to let the doctor listen to see if there is a heart beat unless you have been on a list for awhile because I am guessing that is elective surgery--no room for that unless you don't want to work and want to lay around the house all day and be on the dems re-election committee. But I must say I really don't care if you want to call it murder, killing or whatever. If this is a non-wanted pregnancy rather than make a child suffer let the person have the abortion. It is not the right of the government to interfere at all it is the woman's choice. It is her body and she needs to live with her decision.

In exit polling, only 35% said they are against abortion. the party of Akin, Ryan and Mourdock needs to read the writing on the wall

Well, when the Republican legislatures gerrymander districts so that all the democratic votes are concentrated into small congressional districts, when those districts are are counted they will come in democratic by a large amount. SURPRISE!

I know that just about ALL of us know that the election was not about creating more jobs, trying to get the economy back on track again, concentrate on getting our respect back again from all foreign countries (Yes , obama is the "laughing stock " of the world! To the majority of the voters, getting a handle on the national debt was not important! Could it be that just about all of these people have a habit of taking from us taxpayers, and want to give nothing in return? *YES, these are the democrat voters! Yes Obama, you were not elected because of the failed last 4 years, but by taking restrictions off your food stamp and welfare programs, Anyone with any common sense can see that you were only elected for your "give-away programs! ** YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO ALL AMERICANS!

Amen and repubs are a disgrace for not listening to the needs of the people and putting up someone like romney to run as our candidate. You have to understand that there are plenty of people out there who don't know where their next meal will come from and even though the dems are probably the wealthiest group in DC they also try to make the repubs look like the evil, rich, white guys who are out to destroy all other races. So who do we put up????? A rich, white guy who also belongs to a religion most don't understand---what did you expect????? We need to convince the dems that repubs aren't all about rich, white guys and that the dems have done more to put a wedge between the races than anyone and with their constant spending beyond their means thay are putting a huge wedge between the economic classes and they want to blame it on the repubs. Pull your heads out of your backsides and realize neither of these 2 parties will ever be completely for the wage earner and taxpayer of the United States. They are only for getting richer, more powerful and re-elected--bottom line.

I wish that some "democrat", with a job, would try to explain it to the rest of the "democrats", without a job , that it is not a disgrace to hold down a job ,and pay your "fair share" of taxes! I say, "put on a clean shirt, brush what teeth that you do have, and go out and get one of those Obama jobs that he says is floating around!" you definitely need to get off the Obama welfare and food stamp program! GOOD LUCK!

Really the Democrats are not even close to having the strict control the Republicans have, that which enables the Republicans to constantly pressure their own people. It is very obvious how the Republicans act in controlled unison, to even offering the same scripted rhetoric, word for word. They have repeatedly demonstrated their dominance over their people, even to forcing "moderates", like Stowe and Lugar, out and always demanding adherence to their voting script, always in support of "the money's" interests, literally creating “puppets” to serve as their “strings are pulled”. There is no pledge, like Norquist's, being signed by the Democrats and while the Republicans squelch the individual consciences of their people the Democrats actually are challenged to keep their people together. The mega-millions constantly provided by "the money" gives the likes of Norquist, Cheney, Rove, the Koch brothers and others the "big stick" needed to keep their people in line - and that really isn't in the public’s best interests as the aim is just to con the people, manipulate public opinion and to serve only the interests of "the money".

When money is the priority, just disregarding the people and their needs, then problems will necessarily occur. When excessive deregulation, lax oversight and non-enforcement are the standard, simply aimed to facilitate exploitation by the few and rationalized as “conservative”, then there are those who abandon caution, who take shortcuts, who focus entirely on their selfish gains and the troubles we have experienced are the result. Afterward subterfuge and deception, intended to rationalize, justify, excuse and just deceive, can be expected. It doesn’t matter if it is the problems with Global Warming, or the BP oil spill, or the drastic financial melt-down, or lost jobs and the depressed economy, or any other crisis, it really isn’t government spending or the deficit at fault, as it all can be traced directly to those irresponsible and self-serving beginnings. To think otherwise is to give in to biases and ignore reality, accepting being conned and a victim. When “the money” rules, the people loose.

We are all going to lose with this idiot in office for another fours and 53% should be keeping their comments to themselves when everything stays in the crapper and taxes go up on everyone that pays taxes to fund the freebees for those that do not.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves....

The Republican Offer to the Middle Class:

After three decades of middle class stagnation characterized by increased healthcare costs, higher eduction costs higher energy costs and falling home values, We will-

                        1. Cut taxes for the rich (yet again) right away
                        2. Vouhcerize medicare to place more costs on Middle Class Seniors
                        3. Privatize social security (another Middle Class senior program)
                        4. Reduce unemployment insurance (to help working Americans deal with economic dislocation)
                        5. Cut college loan programs (pretty much targeted to the Middle Class)
                        6. Eliminate financial and environment regulations (don't need them in Palm Beach or Nantucket)
                        7. In the meantime, we will make sure less deserving folks than you, get nothing.
                        8. Also, if you are a woman, do not expect pay equality (who works? Middle Class women)
                        9. We will throw you in jail if you get an abortion (say goodbye to that job while you have that unwanted child)
                        10. And forget birth control.
                        11. If you are Hispanic (Most are middle class or aspiring to be)--go back where you came from.

Any wonder that the Republican message did not resonate with the Middle Class? Better luck next time.

And even if they don't, the Republicans will only have a 35 seat majority, as things stand right now the Dems. have 200 seats and the Repubs. 233, so hold the thought !!...... Obama won. A Democrat won. That happens sometimes and sometimes it happens two times in a row. WOW..

The question is will the GOP take an honest look at how they lost? I FULLY understood how McCain lost because there were a LOT of people afraid of a PALIN VP. But Romney NOT beating OBAMA should be a cold shower wake up call that POLITICS have changed in the last 10 years (go figure, EVOLUTION??). The states the Obama did win illustrate that there are more than enough Americans who are NOT black and NOT hispanic who are ready and willing to not only IGNORE "hate campaigning" but are actually DISGUSTED enough to either not vote at all OR vote for the party who isnt calling 47% of the voters "gift takers". There are enough Americans who are willing to investigate LIES on their own. TO WIT: the primary RED STATES (aka the "old confederacy") are in the top 20 states of the union that receive "gifts". These RED STATES are also the states with high minority populations. IF the GOP is telling the truth, if their "theories" are valid, how are these states remaining so SOLIDLY red? To me, the issue has NOTHING to do with what the GOP is still peddling. I expect 2016 to really illustrate how much the GOP has lost a grip on modern America. They couldnt beat the black socialist Kenyan Muslim TWO TIMES? I mean THEY COULDNT EVEN COME CLOSE??? TWICE?? Uh, at this point it is time to TOSS EVERYTHING AWAY and regroup. BUT, they arent, they are STILL pointing in the direction of COLOR, SEXUALITY and economic status to explain how Obama won.. Unless you've accepted your own ignorance, it is OBVIOUS that the GOP message is wayyy off.

I just saw the Lincoln movie. Definitely a must see- although I would have liked to see it stretch out over a wider timeframe. I do hope republics go see this movie- although most won't get it. I loved how Lincoln had the southern racists grovel for surrender. But with the 13th amendment, the only thing they wanted was now gone- to actually own another human being. Lincoln is so like Obama, the parallels are amazing. He didn't want the anti-American terrorists to be hung, but to move forward in a positive way.

I think a fitting justice would have been for each slave owner and slavery advocate to serve 5 years as a slave to what was their slaves. That would have cured the white trash of their racism and greed, but Like Obama Lincoln was just bent on doing right. In the short run it looks like weakness, but later you can see the wisdom.

The Fox news crowd reminds me of the defeated anti-American terrorist slave-owners. Despite all reason and logic, they cling to failed ideas that were disproven over a century ago. Aristocracy, special privilege, unequal application of the law and a distrust of Science. It's fun to watch Limbag try to apologize, but I still think they are dangerous and you have not seen the last of them. For now, go see Lincoln and learn something!

The GOP is always talking about the job creators as being the business owners. People don't seem to understand who are the job creators in this country. They are the people who buy the products and services that businesses provide. They are the people who work for wages. They spend money to support the economy. Those are the job creators. In the last 25 years those people wages have been stagnant while the wealthy have seen their gains go vertical. Guess what; wealthy people don't go to Chevy, Ford, Walmart, target, or Wendy's. Even if they did, their demographics are too small to support the economy. Yet and still they are the one who have made all of the gains. Businesses are cutting their on throats by busting unions, and sending their production over seas to cut cost and put more money in their own pockets. They are destroying the very market on which they depend. This economy may still be slow at full employment because the people who buy just will not have the buying power that they used to have. Supply side economics along with this insane obsession with small government is what wrecked this economy.

Cool. Four more years of President Obama. I have always wondered what a second Carter term would have been like. Now I guess we will all get to find out together.

Jack, this guy's not Jimmy Carter, take another look at his resume after 4 years. I know it stings but it is pretty damn good.

Remember it was Ryan saying this who had never uttered a single truth in his failed campaign
for the Romney presidency. How anyone can trust this false master with anything is beyond belief?

Ryan is showing that he still has no clue about America and why they chose against him
