First Read roundup: Clinton to Middle East, politics of Rice, Rubio, Christie

1. Hillary Clinton to Middle East. The big news today is that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is heading to the Middle East to try and help broker a peace in the ongoing fighting in Gaza.

Usually, someone as high level as Clinton isn’t dispatched in this sort of delicate situation unless a deal is imminent. If that’s the case, it would certainly be a feather in Clinton’s cap in her last overseas trip. And it could be a strong credential if she runs for president in, dare we say, 2016.

Samrang Pring / Reuters

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives for the 4th ASEAN-U.S. leaders' meeting at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh Nov. 19, 2012.

2. Race cited as opposition to Rice. As NBC’s Frank Thorp and Luke Russert reported yesterday nearly 100 House Republicans wrote a letter to President Obama, saying they would strongly oppose a Susan Rice nomination for secretary of State.

Of course, this has no teeth. Presidential appointments that need congressional approval have to be approved by the Senate. The House doesn’t even get a vote. But it is indicative of how deep the opposition is among hard-right conservatives.

But now Rep. Jim Clyburn, echoing the feelings of many on the left, said on CNN this morning that race appears to be a factor in the criticism of Rice.

NBC's Domenico Montanaro talks about Sen. John McCain's criticism of President Barack Obama's decision to send Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to try to broker a Mideast ceasefire.

“During this recent campaign,” Clyburn said, “we heard [Gov.] Sununu calling our president lazy, incompetent. These kinds of terms that - those of us, especially those of us born and raised in the South, we've been hearing these little words and phrases all of our lives, and we get insulted by them. Susan rice is as competent as anybody you will find. … Say that she was wrong for doing it, but don't call her incompetent.”

Democrats point to the harshest criticism from the right of Obama’s cabinet has been aimed at minorities and women – Attorney General Eric Holder, EPA administrator Lisa Jackson, and Rice, who are all black, as well as HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who are women.

Republicans would say they have just been involved in some of the more controversial decisions made by the administration, from regulating energy to the implementation of the health-care law to trying to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

3. Labor pushes back. Labor groups -- American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, the Service Employees International Union, SEIU, and the National Education Association, NEA -- are going up with ads pressuring Democrats to hold the line on domestic spending, the Washington Post reports. The TV ads will run in “Colorado, Virginia, Missouri, along with radio ads in Pennsylvania, Alaska and Missouri.”

From an ad running in Virginia, entitled, “Jobs not cuts”: “How do we move our country forward and reduce the deficit? By creating jobs and growing our economy, not by cutting programs that families rely on most. We need Senators Warner and Webb to continue to stand up for us by investing in job creation, extending the middle-class tax cuts, and protecting Medicare, Medicaid, and education from cuts.”

The key to getting a deal done on the “fiscal cliff” is for both parties to first, get their own houses in order. House Speaker John Boehner certainly has a difficult task ahead of him to marshal his conservative House conference. But the president also has challenges in getting the left on board and finding 60 votes in the Senate to overcome a Mitch McConnell-led filibuster, if there is one.

4. Rubio flirting with running for president. In Iowa, yes Iowa, the FLORIDA senator joked about running for president:

“Let's just address right up front the elephant in the room, because anytime anyone makes a trip to Iowa, people start speculating about what you're going to do in the future, so let me just be blunt: I am not now nor will I ever be a candidate for offensive coordinator of Iowa.”

Rubio played college football, and that got laughs. But he’s done nothing to tamp down that he’s seriously considering running in 2016. Of course, the opposition vetting process is what a lot of Republicans worry about with Rubio.

5. GOP not thrilled with Christie. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who is the ostensible reason Rubio was in Iowa – for a birthday fundraiser – took a swipe at New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his praise for President Obama during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"There are some people that think maybe he could have handled it - been a little less gushing,” Branstad said. “But that's his personality. He has got that New Jersey edge to him, you know, for good or bad."

And Matt Drudge, a big Romney fan, headlines: “Christie Clowns on SNL as Residents Suffer."

But Christie is getting the thumbs up from New York City residents. Asked who did the best job handling Sandy, respondents to a Quinnipiac poll said Christie.

Christie  36%
Obama  22%
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo  15%
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg 12%

Those wanting to take shots at Christie probably have little connection to the New York/New Jersey area. Christie saw the places he grew up devastated by the storm. And the furthest thing from someone’s mind who has to govern during a time when your residents are dying and houses are being destroyed should be politics.

6. Ron Paul endorsed secession. Retiring Rep. Ron Paul isn’t going out quietly. He endorsed secession, calling it a “deeply American principle.”

"Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession....In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo. If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it."

7. Dems draw from NY, CA. The GOP has taken a lot of criticism as a regional party with its members and power center rooted in the South. Well, almost 30% of Democrats in the House now are from just New York and California, the highest percentage ever, according to the University of Minnesota’s Smart Politics blog. http://bit.ly/QrZqJW

8. A brief history of turkey pardons. As we make our way closer to Thanksgiving, there’s an annual presidential tradition that Obama will take part in once again tomorrow – pardoning a turkey. The quaint exercise, however, does not date as far back as some might think. And even presidents have wrongly cited the first to do so. We break it down.

The GNOP is licking their chops at the prospect of John Kerry replacing Susan Rice as the front runner for SOS!

Nothing they would enjoy more than another shot at fielding Scott Brown for the empty Senate seat!

My thoughts are, President Obama should go BIG and appoint either Chuck Hagle, Colin Powell or even Jon Hunstman. Each of them is uniquely qualified and it would go along way in the spirit of bipartisanship!

I see where Chris Christis is the latest "fall guy" for running thee most flawed candidate in history! lol

These clowns ran a company into bankruptcy twice in less than a decade and then demand to be paid bonus's?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Hostess Brands, the maker of sweet snacks like Twinkies that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, will ask a bankruptcy judge today to approve a plan that will allow it to pay $1.75 million in bonuses to 19 of its executives. Hostess’ decision to file for bankruptcy came amid disputes with its union workers, who threatened a strike that Hostess said imperiled the company’s finances. The unions are now protesting Hostess’ request for the bonuses, though they are unlikely to prevail, CNN Money reports:

Under the plan, bonuses ranging from $7,400 to $130,500 will be paid to 19 executives. The company argues the bonuses are below market rates for such payments.

Even as it blamed unions for the bankruptcy and the 18,500 job losses that will ensue, Hostess already gave its executives pay raises earlier this year. The salary of the company’s chief executive tripled from $750,000 to roughly $2.5 million, and at least nine other executives received pay raises ranging from $90,000 to $400,000. Those raises came just months after Hostess originally filed for bankruptcy earlier this year

Hostess could pay 19 executives huge bonuses but they couldn't pay the rest of the workers more? Hostess blames the union workers but fails to look at their own executives self-centered greed--the bonuses reflect the going market rate??!!. This is one more example of how upside down business thinking has become; another example of arrogance and stupidity by executives. How can Hostess justify huge bonuses to executives who failed to keep the profitable? That's what Wall Street was doing, giving multi-million dollar bonuses to reward bad decisions which tanked the global economy.

The Republicans have never been able to understand that an intelligent person can do more than one thing at a time. Remember when John McCain "suspended" his campaign so he could go to Washington to focus on the meltdown of the financial industry, he called for a meeting at the White House and proceeded to have virtually nothing to say at that meeting. TARP stalled and Wall Street tanked.

John McCain was and is nothing less than a useless politician. His only interest is political gain, not governance.

THAT is the problem that permeates the Republican party. Whether it is Mitch McConnell declaring the number one goal of the GOP is to make President Obama a one term president or Grover Norquist insisting that every Republican sign his blood oath to never raise taxes; the method is to destroy the country if need be to gain political advantage.

Why does anyone vote for a party whose stated objective is the destruction of the US government ?

I think President Obama should take the two bullies, McCain and Graham, to task. If Obama believes-- no doubt he has discussed it with SoS Clinton--US Ambassador Susan Rice is qualified to be Secretary of State, is the best choice, and wants her to be, then he should appoint her. She has been working closely with SoS Clinton, has worked with the world leaders through their ambassadors, understands the complexities of foreign policy because she has been part of it for nearly four years, she has had "on-the-job" training. I say, President Obama, should appoint the person he wants and to heck with TweedleDum and TweedleDee's threats and bully tactics.

McCain and Graham's behavior has nothing to do with Benghazi, the death of Ambassador Stevens and three Americans, or Susan Rice and what she said and didn't say--neither senator is interested in finding out the truth and looking at ways to prevent future similar attacks. This is a power struggle for them, they see republican foreign policy dominence slipping through their fingers and they think that character assassination and bullying is the way to change that dynamic. This is McCain and Graham doing their best to take back foreign policy credibility from President Obama and democrats. Nothing more and nothing less.

I find it disgusting that two grown men would pick a fight, make filibuster threats, and attempt to discredit someone's character and qualifications BEFORE that person has even been nominated for the job. It's stupid, it's partisan politics at it ugliest coming from those two cranky, old turkeys.

Wow-we are back to the intelligent thing again. Seeking Sanity our brilliant Duke grad--NOT-calling people out and Jack always telling people who dont share his opinion that they are stupid. Do you Obama supporters ever look at anything objectively? When the coach of your favorite sports team makes mistakes, do you blindly say he is the greatest coach ever and that its always the other coaches fault? Do you think the fans of the competing sports teams are stupid because they dont blindly follow your views? Jack and Seeking Sanity--why cant either of you formulate your own opinion and views and share them as to why you defend various Obama positions? Why do you both just follow the party line no matter the outcome? You might not agree with anyone on here who doesnt think Obama has been right every time he opens his mouth but at least the people with opposing views have the ability to formulate and share those opinions while all you guys do is personally attack them for having them.

As for Susan Rice, I dont even understand why this is a big issue. I think its ok now that Obama has won for you progressives to admit that Obama at the least misled and at the worst lied about what happened. But who cares, its not like the truth would have changed the election. So just admit that he did. The GOP should focus more on why the ambassador died and what led to the attacks and the failure to protect him. Susan Rice is unfortunately a pawn placed in the middle of this by Obama and she understands politics so she should take the heat for misleading the american people. Do you really think Obama is going to take the blame? If he wants her to be secretary of state then he should nominate her. The GOP should just let this go and focus on more important issues. The truth is not going to change anything in washington. But unfortunately, Obama wont admit his mistake here and the GOP wants him to and wont let it go and the end result is a big waste of everyones time.

Per comments from righties they seem to think the President should work on only one issue at a time. This President can multi-task. He is fully briefed on all the major issues of the day. The trip to Myanmar and other areas around there is very important for increasing US exports. People who claim to love capitalism should be cheering at the prospect of more sales and even more cheap labor in the future. Instead we see guys like Geo on here bellyaching about the trip.

Zman, the ball is in Congress' court now regarding the economy. President Obama has told them what he will and will not sign. He has been broad in his accptance and narrow in what he will reject. The Congress needs to come together and give him someting he can sign. As for Bengazi, that is blown out of proportion, primarily by the hate monger talking heads on FOX. Rice and others were saying only what the intellegence officials told them at the time. If you want to blame anybody blame the CIA and military intellegence not the Administration or our UN Ambassador.

Seeking, thanks. McCain couldn't even be bothered to attend the 3-hour, high-level, classified intelligence briefing on Benghazi which would have answered his questions last week--he had to grandstand in front of the TV cameras yelling about getting answers on Benghazi. How pathetic and what further proof does anyone need to understand McCain and Graham's real motives. If it had been Condi Rice making those comments after the Benghazi attack with Bush as President, we wouldn't hear so much as a peep from McCain, Graham or any of the others. That's how completely irrational and irresponsible their behavior is.

I'll say it again, Kirk. Yesterday you were the one who started talking about your degrees and the pedigree school you attended and your law degree--it wasn't Seeking. There's a similarity there between you and Albany Joe--both of you boast about your accomplishments (A.J. about his wise investments and all the money he has). But as others have pointed out about Albany Joe, people who are wealthy and who make wise investments never talk about their accomplishments--in essence, they're saying he's a fraud. Should I continue the parallel and how it applies to you, or are you beginning to catch on?

Now go up and read geo's #1.1, which is what I was responding to. Tell me where in his comment I would find an opinion worth refuting. There is none. Either it's a stupid comment, or he's stupid--or both. I was simply pointing out the obvious in my #1.4.

John Kerry has no intention of taking the position of Secretary of State. Kerry is the perfect example of the need for term limits in Congress. Kerry has done nothing in Washington, no legislative accomplishments to brag about, and the man is simply a gold digger. The Secretary of State position would interfere with Kerry's love of three hour lunches and his need for pedicures. At the confirmation hearings Republicans might want to know all about his offshore accounts or his tax dodging like he did with his 7 million dollar yacht.

Rice has plenty of enemies on the Democrat side as well as Republican. Nothing Republicans would love more then to get Rice in front of Senate hearings to be bombarded with questions about Libya and how she came to perpetuate a known lie about some video. There is no way Obama is going to waste any presidential clout on trying to get Rice confirmed. In the end you can take to the bank Rice will get a cushy non confirmation required job that will allow her to lavish off the backs of taxpayers.

The only idiots saying this are you and your fellow delusional right-wing extremists. No moderate or liberal is saying increased taxes on the rich solve all the budgetary issues. But hey, Geo, keep throwing out those inane talking points and keep sipping your kool-aid. Might I recommend grape, without sugar, to match those sour grapes you so enjoy sucking on while bemoaning your losses?

A) Incompetent

B) a Liar

C) a Fool for being obama's stoolpigeon

D) All of the above

It really doesn't matter which one you choose, none of them qualify her to be Secretary of State.

Jacklyn in Portsmouth, im sorry alluded to. Wow what the intellect you are. Lemme guess you got one of those neat Prestigious Degree's too. LOL.

Here's the thing, CA. Whenever I catch you out on things like this, you are very quick to correct them, which indicates that you knew better to begin with. Which in turn means that the reason you didn't write it correctly in the beginning is that you're lazy and careless. And since you're lazy and careless, it indicates that your thinking process is also lazy and careless. Which means that if you'd make even the smallest effort you might be able to join the adults in a serious conversation.

Jack, again I didnt bring it up yesterday as I responded to your personal attacks. I responded by asking you an easy question which you avoided as you always avoid having to provide or be a part of a substantive discussion. I asked you if you considered me stupid or unintelligent based on me disagreeing with you or based on my IQ points. I then said if you just consider me stupid based on IQ, then lets compare because my guess is you might lose that debate. Seeking Sanity jumped in with your degrees and how brilliant she was but she unfortunately chose the school I attended. So she was quickly identified as a complete liar and she was given every opportunity to prove she wasnt lying by answering simple questions that anyone with a degree would know. Sorry but you cant change what happened. I am either stupid because I disagree with you or stupid based on my intellectual capacity to understand and I asked you to provide me with your conclusions. You went on to avoid any substantive discussion as I was able to successfully rebutt and respond to your baseless conclusions and opinions. Thats why you, David and Seeking Sanity get so worked up over me is that you dont like having someone call you guys out on your inaccuracies. I get it but instead of personally attacking me, why dont you try doing the same. Call me out on my BS rather than attacking you might learn something and actually be more credible with people other than your Jen and her campaign crew.

Kaybee--can you provide me with a single post in which I was schooled to eat humble pie or crow? I am sorry but being called stupid and refusing to provide any substantive responses is not being schooled by anyone. You also should spend more time reading my posts. I have praised Obama for many things and have never called him a lazy POTUS (although I will point out that the media had a field day for Bush spending time on the golf course and Obama has golfed more than Bush did in 8 years). Yes you have seen blind opposition to a president before--it was the way Bush was treated. Bush was a horrible president and I voted for Kerry but he was treated just as bad as Obama by the far left and the media where Obama gets a pass. Obama is a very accomplished man but he isnt a great president at least as of yet. He certainly has 4 more years to prove my views of him wrong but I have my doubts. If you read my posts, you would know that where I disagree with him is almost solely on economic principles and his views on the role of government. Removing self reliance, personal accountability and responsibility while eliminating consequences for the choices we make in life is a dangerous path and away from what made this country great. I respect your views and opinions on Obama and I hope you end up being correct about him. Its just too bad more of your colleagues dont know how to do the same.

Kirk - I don't lie and have lied about nothing - unlike you. But, I will not play your childish games so go ahead and make yourself feel superior - that's what you need to make you feel like a man. So very sad!

No one chooses to converse with you because of your arrogance, your putdowns, and your constant "trials" to prove something to you that frankly no one else gives a damn about. You are always coming up with your little games and expecting people to be as needy as you and to jump through the hoops you conjur up to make yourself feel like a big man. Not happening. And, as usual, you just look foolish!

I dont feel superior--just caught you in a lie. I actually feel sorry for you that you felt the need to make up a pedigree. Its more about calling out a hypocrite like yourself than anything to do with me. You sit here on this board ripping anyone who disagrees with you by calling them stupid, low information, idiot and your other favorites. You love to call people a liar. Well guess what you just lost your credibility on this board as you lied about a basic fact about yourself. Sorry Seeking better change your name so people wont remember.

These are not childish games but easy responses. No different than asking a grad of UofI what the main bars on campus are or asking a Carolina grad what street is the main drag etc. These are easy questions and can confirm if you know the area. You obviously lied because you would tell me the answers to my questions immediately.

I am sorry that I caught you and maybe know you will start treating people with a little more respect and I would recommend that you listen to both sides. I respect your support of Obama but you need to learn how to respect those who dont support him. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and as you said earlier, it doesnt really matter that you didnt go to Duke (it does matter that you lied) because its what you do with your knowledge that matters. Just stop your personal attacks.

But you havent answered the simple questions. Let me give you an example of why you are the one that has no credibility in these posts. I ask you, "Is the sky blue?" you say I am not answering that you are foolish for asking that question. What game are you playing your stupid dont you know that? What other conclusion can I reach but you lied when you cant answer the obvious? Being a hypocrite and personally attacking people isnt a game. If you cant stand up to the easy questions can you imagine how hard it would be if I was asking you real substantive questions?

Here I was trying to reach out and be nice and you had to get back in the gutter and call me pathetic. I understand how hard it is for you to be found out and called a hypocrite but the only way out of the hole you dug is to show your stripes. You now have to start being more respectful and try to be more substantive otherwise you will be stuck in the hole.

Neither. Whether you disagree with me or not is irrelevant.

And I could care less what your IQ is. It appears to be of supreme importance to you--you can't seem to stop talking about it--but no matter how high it might be, it doesn't mean you have a lick of common sense.

David said it best when he accused you of "blithering". If I happened to meet you at a party I'd be frantically searching for the exit--and you'd be trying to cut off my escape, droning on and on about something I have no interest in.

You bore me. And yet I am fascinated by the degree to which you take yourself seriously. It's that latter quality that makes everyone want to pop your bubble.

Except CA. He appears to be your sole friend here today. Clasp him to your bosom and don't let him get away.

Jack, actually I am quite the opposite from your description. The one attribute that is always applied to me is that he doesnt take him self too seriously. The problem with the written word especially writing in a stream of consiousness fashion, is that there is no context. You have no clue whether you would like me or not from stupid encounters on a blog like this. Because its anonymous you feel free to personally attack others which I am sure you dont do in person. You cant judge someone from this and its a pity that you do. I would never judge you from a stupid blog. Lighten up Francis

Lets face it, your groups preoccupation with calling people stupid or unintelligent is legendary. Go back to the top of each topic for weeks and read what your fellow group members say. Look at your posts, so you really have no place lecturing someone for defending their intellectual honor. The bottom line is that you guys just dont like honest debate and real substantive discussion. You just want to have posts congratulating each other on your brilliance and how correct each of you are in your cut and paste observations.

Simple truth is - someone told Rice to go on TV and mislead the country. I'm not sure who or why, but as unfair as it might be, she's going to take heat for it until it becomes clear who put her up to it.

Even then, if she knew she was misleading the country, then I do think it puts her future in question. Colin Powell went before the UN and repeated someone nelses lies, which led us to war. He himself has said it tainted him.

If the president is mad about that, then he should have sent out a different talking head

    #1.67 - Tue Nov 20, 2012 3:46 PM EST

Wow you got the name right. So if you looked that up, why couldnt you tell me the pizza joint where students go? Its not hard or the street that the Hospital is on or any other landmarks in town. Pretty easy. Your right I dont accept that you attended because you didnt. If you did, I am embarassed that my school accepted such an intolerant disrespectful person. But we both know that you didnt attend.

who cares whether CA finds me fascinating. Why you guys have to lump people together that dont share your opinions is strange. Sharing the same lack of support for Obama doesnt mean that CA and I are alike at all nor does it mean that you, David or Jack are alike. Opinions of presidential candidates are meaningless in the larger context. You guys really need to lighten up and enjoy life more.

I Don't know how many comments that I have missed by plunging down to the first reply that I could find but I feel that I must comment on the I.Q. thing. I am considered to be quite intelligent with a reasonably high I.Q. but one of the most intelligent people that I ever met was a man from Central Ontario, who had barely gone through the fourth grade, then started working as a coffee boy on the railroad. At the time that I met him he was working as a toolmaker's helper. Too many of the other workers disliked him as he had no social graces and spoke a poor grade of American. He and I met at work and I liked him from the first ,so we socialised quite often. He often sought my help both socially and educationally and I was surprised how quickly he understood what I was teaching him. The more that we were together the more I was impressed by his mental capacity and the grasp of his understanding. To this day I consider that he was one of the most intelligent of the people that I was fortunate enough to meet. From a different environment and educational level who knows where he would be today socially and economically. Do I need to add that I considered him poorly educated but a Gentleman of the first degree.

Took a "parrot" to get this comedian's drift about the noble turkey...

Franklin's Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

We never really recovered from Katrina, 9th Ward attests to that, still a lot of left over Katrina when we left Covington in 2010, my understanding things have stayed about the same. It will take years before the City and environs to heal as well as the East Coast. I wish for a faster and competent recovery for all the survivors, i.e., Breezy Point, Staten Island. The last thing the survivors want to hear is the Insurance Companies start denying claims, trust me they'll attempt to stall and deny, been there and done that, I hope it won't be so.

Seeking, we lived in Covington Point, off 190 going north towards Folsom, down the road from the Parish Lock-up, that's why we got power back faster than the rest of Covington, couldn't let the local bad boys suffer any discomfort, nah, not true just a little mean spirited on my part. We were cut-off from the world for a week, no phone service, no cell. We had a generator and shared the largess. It was terrible but not as bad as those in Mandeville, Gulf Coast and of course the 9th Ward, now that was a horror. I hope your brother fared well or as well as one could expect.

We took in a family of 4 that had chopped their way out of their attic in the 9th Ward, they barely got out alive, after handing their children up (toddlers) to their mom (Lisa Murphy) Jack the dad made it out was the water bubbled up through the hole. The sat on their roof for 2 days before being rescued by the Coast Guard, they stayed with us for 3 weeks and now are doing well back in the 9th Ward, they rebuilt after a long protracted fight with State Farm.

We survived but for some folks that haven't a clue what a disaster like Katrina and Sandy was, I tell them to STFUP and stop the criticism for FEMA or the RC, this go around paradise compared to the non-aid from the Bush admin. and Gov. Blanco and Mayor Naggin. General Honore arrived, opened a can of whoop ass and got things organized, this was after 6 days of death and Bush doing his fly-over. Disgusting display of ignorance and desire for photo-ops, Heck of Job Brownie, miserable mutt.

        Later.

skyparrot - my brother's girlfriend went in the hospital in Covington the day before Katrina hit, with chest pains - worried about her heart. It was brand new and they told my brother to move in there for the storm. I couldn't reach him for a week and was frantic when I finally did.

The first thing he bought after the storm was a large generator and he always has it gassed up!

They lost 70 trees in the yard - one of which fell and cut his boat in half. That was their complete damage. If he hadn't lost the boat he would have been out trying to help get people off the roots of their homes.

I have never seen the devastation I saw the first time I went to see him afterward - not on his side of the causeway but in New Orleans. It is mind-numbing to realize the damage that can be done.

I was so glad to see the President doing his job and going quickly to NJ. And, it appears FEMA and the RC are doing outstanding jobs. But, it never seems like enough when you're in the thick of the disaster. I can understand that and I sypathize with those who have to go through this.

Glad you made it through okay and I hope you NEVER have to face anything like that again. Once is more than enough for anyone to go through that kind of disaster.

the Regional Hospital was relatively new, but am surprised because it sits on the low land part of town, I am delighted that they made it through the horror. No one can imagine what its like having water bubbling up out of a hole in your roof, especially after just handing your children up and out. Seconds earlier the entire family would have drowned, a horrifying thought.

Your Brother will know where Covington Point is located, one of the worst parts of the storm was the pine trees snapping and the sound....terrifying, thank goodness Katrina struck during daylight hours, we had one snap three quarters up and land between our home and our neighbors, dodged that bullet. Many weren't so lucky. Lived off our freezer and the REM's which weren't too bad considering, fed our neighbors almost on a daily basis until power was restored and refrigerated their perishables as best we could. We came together as neighbors and a community even though I was the only Democrat in St.Tam Parish, nah, not true, there was about 12 of us vocal types, the others stayed hidden for fear of gang bang ridicule, similar to some folks and their barrage of nasty posts and the name calling, non-stop.

The President won and I am over-joyed at the election's out-come, regardless of republican attempts to suppress the vote, whoo hoo.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, ask your brother to send me some Cousins Creole Tomato Dressing, nah, just dreaming, great stuff, next time you visit its a must try, get it at the local groceries in the cold case. enjoy, wonderful stuff.

Speaking of birds. You know the Turkey is a "Middle East" bird. Brought to England by "Turkish" merchants for trade. The English took some, and eventually these birds were brought to the colonies. That's where they got their name. They may be "Islamic" too. Course, I don't care, but some of these peculiar crazies might want to renounce their consumption. Don't think they hold any particular interest in virgins though. From what I've seen, a tom will copulate with any hen, no matter how many broods she's already borne, or, how ugly she might happen to be.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Wrong...

When Europeans first encountered turkeys in America, they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guineafowl (Numididae). Guineafowl were also known as turkey fowl (or turkey hen and turkey cock) because they were imported to Central Europe through Turkey. The name turkey fowl, shortened to just the name of the country, stuck as the name of the North American bird.[2][3][4] In 1550, English navigator William Strickland, who had introduced the turkey into England, was granted a coat of arms including a "turkey-cock in his pride proper".[5]

@dangerfield: The level of scholarship, in this age of readily available information, is really sad...

          Right

Your gobbledygook, ahem, about Europeans first discovering Turkeys in America and misidentifying them as guineafowl might be correct or not. Immaterial either way.

The Chinese claim Turkeys (named after a Chinese province) were there from 500 AD and the Country "Turkey" got It's name from the bird. The Chinese don't say where they were before that.

Eastern American Indian tribes (Cherokee included) claim not to have seen the bird until the latter 1500"s. Course, those who told that could have been blind, or lying. Who knows? You? Nah??????????

Instant information or instant bullsh^t? Both. Just enough of the former to let us all bury ourselves in the latter.

Level of scholastic gullibility in this age of readily available information is laughable. Sad too, but only for the scholars.

Now, have a happy holiday. Eat a gut full of the hybrid that is the product of copulation between a Guinea fowl and a Buzzard. Well, I could have said "vulture".

I find it completely disturbing that a man who has been a United States congressman for 16 years does not understand the difference between whining loudly about being in the minority even though you remain a full partner in the legislative process and fighting against the fact that there was no legislative process at all.

People who are oppressed have no rights. They don't get to whine about losing elections. They don't have elections to lose or to whine about. They don't have any recourse when the local baron comes in on their wedding day and takes 'lordly privileges' with their new bride. They don't get to complain when the baron comes in a seizes 1/3 of the food that they've grown for the year. They don't have any way to change the fact that the baron can come in and conscript all three of their sons to fight in the king's wars and then doesn't even bother to send a letter of condolence when all three of those sons are killed.

On the other hand, whiners, sometimes unfortunately do. Whiners get to take advantage of all of the built in protections against these sorts of abuses that our country offers us. They get to sign online 'petitions' about how they no longer want to be a part of the country that is designed on its most fundamental level to allow them to complain when they lose an election. And to have elections to complain about. They get to vote to elect leaders who will prevent 'injustices' by the government and then get to complain bitterly when the vote doesn't go their way because there are more people on the other side who didn't see it their way. They get to whine incessantly and petulantly do everything in their power to prevent the nation from being governed up to and including trying to prevent the lawfully elected leader of the nation from being able to appoint people to positions of responsibility.

They get to have their representatives sign pacts with private citizens agreeing not to govern the nation. They also have all sorts of legal recourses available to them to delay the results of the legal elections from taking place while they mount challenges and demand recounts and otherwise to generally just make asses of themselves.

Secessionists whine because they lose. Secessionists will fiercely tell you that they have the right to do all of these things even while you are rolling your eyes at them for doing them and telling you that.

There's a difference, Mr. Paul. And if 16 years in the congress hasn't taught you the most basic difference between men who have no rights taking up arms to seize those rights and other people whining because they lost a legal election and lost it badly, then it's a good thing you are retiring. Because you don't deserve to be there. And if you always thought just pouting and picking up your ball and trying to leave the country when you lost was a viable solution, then the congress and the country never needed you in the first place.

Texas won't leave the United States. Last year, we had the worst drought in recorded history... Perry ran right to the federal government for a handout. Then a few short years ago, Perry and his GOP cronies (from Texas) condemn the entire stimulus package but yet.. they hold their hands out and gladly accept some of the money for the state. Seems to me.. Texas should have a state income tax to handle their own problems and stop relying on the federal government.

Ron Paul... you are a disgrace. What member of Congress would swear to preserve, protect, and defend the United States Constitution and then be in favor of secession. Please follow Romney's immigration plan and self deport. P.S. Take Rush Limbaugh with you.

As always Ron Paul is right. Ron Paul was one of the few people to stand up and say NO to the heinous wars we've entangled ourselves in the middle east. He never ONCE voted for an unbalanced budget. He doesn't believe in fiat currency which will ruin the dollar SOON, he believes all the nonviolent drug dealers in prison are there unfairly for a VICTIMLESS crime. And of course he's right about secession...we would be part of england if secession is against the law. Any of you people who knock him should have your mouths washed out with soap. He's one of the greatest. And America will PAY DEARLY for not electing him. It's NOT following the constitution that has us in EVERY MESS we're in. Most Americans are SO ignorant.

dave-4342450, Secession and revolution are both against the law. That's why we had a Revolutionary War and later a Civil War. If they were legal acts, we would have settled in court and avoided all of that bloodshed.

I suppose we could give Florida back to Spain, Louisiana back to France and Texas back to Mexico. All three are friendly nations to the United States that have our back. No way in hell would we allow them to secede as foreign nations with sovereign borders after all of their recent shenanigans. Give them that choice or tell them to sit down and shut-up. That's how you handle petulant children.

Why does the republican party continue to look stuff that is not helping the American people. Most people are sorry about the Ambassador and others loosing their lives however, most are more concerned about the economy and their families than about what happened in Libya. Most families are more concerned about paying for their homes, keeping their jobs than are worried about who the head of the CIA is screwing. Most people are worried about the republicans screwing them than are worried about Director Patreus screwing some bimbo. Just like the Taliban shooting that little girl because she wanted to be educated, the republican are doing all in their power to keep the American people from being educated as to how they are trying to destroy this country. Their base is dying off and the republicans do not have any idea on how to deal with educated people. Telling the same lie over and over does not make it the truth.

As long as republicans are ranting and grandstanding about Benghazi, it means they don't have to talk about holding 98% of American hostage to avoid increasing taxes on the rich or the looming sequester or the Veterans Jobs Act they filibustered or the American Jobs Act they couldn't be bothered to bring to the House floor and was filibustered by the GOP senators, or any of the other serious issues facing this country.

I would hate to see a special election in Ma. but with the Warren win and the people wise to GOP ways there would be an excellent chance the we would retain the seat and Warren would be the senior member and would get a committee post were her talents would be best utilized. Susan Rice is eminently qualified for the SOS job, republicans are not in lock-step regarding her appointment, some are falling by the way-side of party line, so there may not be a whole sale fight. McConnell is keeping a low profile, what's he up to?

Possibly but, I wouldn't think any higher than VP. Side note, I really don't know if Hillary is going to make a run in 2016. She will be 69 years old (matched only by Ronald Reagan). Kind of hope she does. I actually think I would have voted for her in 2008 had she got the nod. She had at least first hand knowledge of what DC was all about. Mayor, city council and the"big school" education doesn't mean anything without say, oh, for lack of a better term, street smarts.

To keep this civil as I truly want it to be, Mr. Obama had very little real experience also but it was okay to vote for him. What did you truly know prior to placing your vote for him? Even the "vetting" press admitted that they knew very little right before the election. He was a good orator and had great sounding ideas. I guess we all needed that but I also think it clouded some judgement. We'll see what the next four years bring.

Jim: You make a grave mistake by thinking that because this president took office the problems would be solved overnight. What started many years before exploded in part in 2008, and then we rolled downhill, there would be no president that could have fixed this mess overnight, as most of the people opposing him claim that he failed to do. Besides, the crisis originated in this country unfortunately rippled like a Tsunami across the ocean and our partners on the other side of the pond were affected in similar fashion (or worse, look at Spain, Greece and Italy), thus reducing the capabilities of our customer to purchase our products. But you fail to see that the cause of the situation we have to day is the consequence of catastrophic policies that allowed corporations to take their businesses abroad and still be protected while the average worker lost his or her sustenance. We chose to benefit stockholders at the expense of workers who could not afford to purchase stocks on those companies. But it is an American malady. We became an economy of service instead of a manufacturing one. It was easy for us to pay the Chinese 19 cents per labor hour while saving 7.06 and grossing more profits. And in the process we submerged the working class into the pond. We had a rampant unemployment and companies now don't choose the best candidate, they choose the cheapest, bringing the quality of our products to lower standards. We shipped jobs abroad because it was easy for companies to circumvent the regulations imposed in the US regarding safety and where they were away from lawsuits for defective products. The pharma industry will test medicines in foreign countries who don't have a strict regulatory system when it comes to research, and only then they would bring it over here to avoid being sued for the failure of their products. It's not about the debt, ask yourself then why Mr. Jobs said that he would never bring his manufacturing to the US. He claimed that it was due to the demand of their product when the reality is that they manufacture a cheap product that they would sell at astronomical price, and we will, like idiots we are, make lines for days to have the latest gadget, who will in turn last for merely 6 months until someone comes up with a new toy. And, as far as I am concerned, it is not President Obama who makes the budget, he only proposes. It's in the hands of the crooks in Capitol Hill to make it a reality, from both sides of the aisle. By the way... this country was bankrrupt since 1973, when President Nixon eliminated the gold standard for the US Dollar, and now our currency's value is only for the paper in which it is printed.

White or black, the GOP finds reason to disapprove of every nominee named by Pres Obama. They didn't like his appointment of Eric Holder any better and I am convinced that their logic goes beyond racism and into the realm of simple hatred for Barack Obama and anything that he does; or tries to do! As the record shows, this session of Congress has proved to be the ' GREATEST Obstructionist Party' ever; PERIOD! ALL they can see is defeating the Democrats at every turn no matter what the issue has been. WE SHOULD HAVE FIRED THEM ALL, because of the sort of approval/disapproval numbers posted regarding their incompetence!

This may not be on subject, but, has anyone cosidered what wages are doing to our S.S..With lower wages there is ,naturally, less money going into the S.S. account as it is a percentage of wages. The GREEDY are effectively stealing our seniors retirement.

old man - that's a good point. There are so many aspects to what the company leaders are doing not only to their employees but to the country as a whole. It would be great to see a group run a company that actually cares about their employees, puts out a good product, and doesn't screw the pubic in the process. We can dream!

Well part of the long string (LMAO) of tax cuts Obama gave was the lowering of the SS percentage also. Combined with the lower wages you state, it does reduce the amount of funding.

Stealing? Really? It is the GREEDY doing the cutting to your expected funds. I see. Not the government by allowing you to put more in your pocket right now. Got it.

Old man, I really couldn't care less about SS. I learned many years ago that it would not be the only thing that I should rely on in my retirement years. Therefore, I planned and invested. If things stay as they are now, I won't even have to collect in 10-12 years when I retire. To me, if I decide to collect, It will be a bonus that I bank to pay for something "extra special" once a year. A reminder to me of what I worked very hard for and through SS contributions, could have.

One of the things that sports and politics have in common is that the coverage can focus on the negative. That's understandable because, well, people behaving properly is not news. But it means we get a tilted view of what's going on in both areas. Someone should make a list of 5 ways politics is better than it used to be, but for now here my list for sports.

                      Here are five:

                      1. Before most NBA games, the players from opposing teams embrace. Then they play with intensity and emotion for 48 minutes. Then they hug again. It’s a great lesson to everyone, including the kids who idolize them, that you can play fiercely but not personally. That you can be kind and friendly outside the game and be a tough competitor during it. And that you can show emotion to your friends in public. This true after NFL games, too. You can see that behavior mimicked all the time in youth sports. The self-protective stoicism among guys trying to be tough is no longer necessary.

                      2. In the 1970's there was a fear that as NBA rosters got more black players, the popularity of the sport would decline. White people would just not be as interested in a sport with nearly all-black teams. But the truth is that as the NBA has gotten blacker, it has gone from a niche sport to a global juggernaut. Thirty years ago, the NBA finals were shown on tape delay – now there are live regular season games on TV almost every night and a whole network dedicated to the League. And in addition to fewer white players, there are more international players. As a general trend over the last 50 years, as the league as gotten blacker and more foreign, it has gotten more popular and valuable. Perhaps most telling, the Celtics roster is currently composed of fourteen black players and one white foreigner, and the team is as popular and beloved as ever in Boston.

Only a liberal would consider a 2 to 3% popular vote edge a "butt kicking". Besides, I like the terminology "we got shellacked" much better ... and it meant a lot more in 2010 when there were large changes in the Congressional makeup .... to "NEUTER" Obama politically !

Obama got himself a political "vasectomy" in 2010 and he has been crying "OBSTRUCTIONIST" ever since !

As with all vets I will always respect their services to this country. However, John McCain has forgotten he is vet. He has turn into just a bitter old man. Just like the old guys in the AmVet or VFW telling the, "back in 1942 during WWII" stories, John McCain has lost touch with reality. John no longer care about the vets. For him it is only about political points and damn the troops.

There is need to be a mandatory retirement age for the members of congress. That way they cannot let their old age and dwindling mental capabilities ruin the legacy. Ole John just needs to be put out pasture or join the ole guys at the VFW and tell war stories there. Remember to only difference between a fairy tale and a war story is the fairy tale starts with once upon a time and a war stories start with "this is a no $h!tter now"

Susan Rice seems well qualified and I would like to give her a chance to do the job. If things aren't working out than she can be fired and someone else can be hired.

Whether or not Susan Rice is confirmed remains to be seen, From the research I have done on her,she is certainly intellectually capable, and reflects the world view of this Administration. She should not be held responsible for the cock and bull story she gave, those talking points were given to her. What I resent is that ANY time a black person comes under fire, for any reason, here comes the Congressional Black congress, Al Sharpton, and cohorts screaming racism. I watched that Idiot from my home state of SC Jim Clyburn, on a Sunday news show, bring up in conversation she was black and her "Rutts" sprang from SC, who cares? he does, and will seek to make it the primary issue if she is selected.

Sharpton has stayed out of it, well as much as he can, so tell me what go after Rice and Holder and especially the President if there wasn't an element of racism involved, they won't admit it but it is a fact. I have not seen such a maelstrom of hate emanating from a political party that has been spewed from the tea-bags and the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, can't escape the George Wallace time warp that still infects the republican Party and its leaders did nothing to tamp the rhetoric down or disavow any and all outrageous statements and stances, couldn't even leave that Akin loon on his own, the RNC ended up giving him campaign $$.

The Republican party needs to some deep cleaning from the inside out if it hopes to be a viable political party, if it doesn't then it will die a very painful and ignoble death.

Just as Condi Rice and Colin Powell did, and at the time no one faulted them and screamed they were unqualified or unfit, put this incident in the proper perspective. Don't shoot the messenger. The President is a Liberal in today's terms and cares for all Americans, certainly do not see or hear him vilifying half of the American population.

At one time the Democratic Party in the south was the poster child for corruption, i.e, the King Fish, things, events and people change over time. Today being a democrat in the Deep South is a very, nasty dirty word. The Republican Party right wing zealots have turned into the old democratic Party, go figure

Typical reporting by the biased MSNBC, trying to once again make race and gender an issue.

No Republican has said Susan Rice is incompetent because she's a female. Nobody has said Eric Holder is a liar because he's a black man. Race and Gender become an issue because Democrats and liberal media make it an issue. Everytime!! Eric Holder ran an undercover arms program to hand weapons to mexicans that went bad, then tried to cover it up, Susan Rice has been caught in a lie, and she gave the American people incorrect information, multiple times.

They didn't lie because they were a specific race or gender. They lied because that's who they are, and how they operate.

Race has everything to do with everything since Barack Obama first got close to being the next POTUS. People, (esp white people), try to pretend that race is NOT in the mix yet the evidence is there and it is crystal clear. Eric Holder is the very first Atty Gen to be held in contempt of Congress while at the same time, Barack Obama's use of his executive authority was ignored for the first time and in light of the fact that nearly every white president before him used the same authority without challenge. Coincidence? Hardly!

The rioting on the campus of Ole Miss when Pres Obama defeated Romney which involved 400 white students ONLY; was also a coincidence? Yeah; right! Pres Obama being called the 'Greatest food stamps president ever' by Nut Gangrene; is simply more coincidence and not at all racist. The plot to ruin Pres Obama by whites in congress and others BEFORE he was even inaugurated; just mere coincidence? Of course! The white girl who claimed she was attacked by a group of black men who then carved the letter 'B' on her face, ('B' for Barack), but was too ignorant to realize that because she did it in the mirror it would be facing backward...just mere happenstance? The fact that Barack Obama is the only sitting president ever to be challenged to show his birth certificate and proof of his college transcripts; that doesn't mean a thing? Susan Rice being a Rhode scholar and very good at her job makes her incompetent somehow; well, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. The strong implication by a sore loser, Mitt Romney, that Pres Obama promised 'free stuff' to the black community in order to get their vote; that means nothing at all? Does it? No one offered me anything! I could go on forever!

Sufficed to say, as I did at the begging of this submission; race is at the very heart of the matter and has been all along and will be until someone can figure out a way to get that NIGGAR out of the white man's White House!

                        Right on...

John Adams knew what the RICH would do to a Democracy!!!

The RICH are not done yet they will put all of us in chains!!!!

Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. The jaws of power and Greed are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing. There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free 'government' ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.
