GOP House members 'deeply troubled' president may nominate Rice

A group of 97 House Republicans have signed a letter discouraging President Obama from nominating UN Ambassador Susan Rice to be Secretary of State, saying that Rice "either willfully or incompetently misled the American public in the Benghazi matter."

The letter, penned by Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., states the group is "deeply troubled" that President Obama is considering Rice for the position.

"Though Ambassador Rice has been our Representative to the U.N., we believe her misleading statements over the days and weeks following the attack on our embassy in Libya that led to the deaths of Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans caused irreparable damage to her credibility both at home and around the world," the letter reads.

Citing her comments on the Sunday shows, including Meet the Press, on Sept. 16, 2012 where she called the attack "initially a spontaneous reaction" to protest in Egypt, the letter says "the inconsistencies deserve closer examination."

The letter says the unanswered questions surrounding the Benghazi attacks are reason to "strongly oppose any efforts to nominate Ambassador Susan Rice for the position of Secretary of State."

Romney Ryan tried to "willfully or incompetently" mislead "the American public" on major issues like MediScare, and they did it without compunction. They doubled down on the Chrysler Jeep lie several times, after Chrysler told them to knock it off. No shame.

Now McCainGraham are trying to do the same FAUX destruction on Ambassador Rice. They want to make a mess of her career, and they will argue with any facts to do so.

Former CIA Head, General Petraeus, testified that the TV declassified talking points used by Ms. Rice were given the go-ahead by the CIA. She followed orders.

Even former SOS Condoleeza Rice has sided with the Administration. Lots of GOP congressionals in the Senate are siding against McCainGraham - who are CLEARLY plucking at straws. We are tired of the GOP approach of LIE FIRST, AND LIE LAST -- AND NEVER MIND WHO PAYS THE CONSEQUENCES.

Isn't that funny? Those same GOP'ers weren't the least concerned about Condi's misstatements about "mushroom clouds" that led us directly into war.

Republicans, the faux outrage is getting old. This is why you got your rears handed to you in the last election!

You have got to be kidding me! Do these people understand anything? Talk about doubling down on stupidity! If the Republicans continue down this path over the next two years, the House is definitely going to slide over into the Democrat column.

Is there any evidence anywhere that Ambassador Rice purposely misled the country? Does McCain or anyone in the media or the GOP have such evidence? If they do, fork it over.

Otherwise, stop wasting our and the government's time on this GD grammar school BS.

People can make up any kind of BS they want. Particularly if you are a Republican.

Too bad the media can't see through them. Or better yet, maybe they have nothing better to do with their time. Because that's what it looks like.

So this letter is penned by Jeff Duncan who just so happens to be the Rep. out of South Carolina. This of course has Lindsey Graham aka Ed Flanders(The Simpsons) written all over it. This is nothing more than a witch hunt being led by Graham, McCant, and now this Jeff Duncan character. If this group would spend the amount of energy on resolving the fiscal cliff issues that they are spending on Amb. Susan Rice, we would be in a heck of a better position come the end of the year.

I only wish the people "looked for alternatives" sooner and disinfected more of the GOP from the House. Now we again have to deal with their heartless majority there for at least two more years, and the midterm is not encouraging either.

IF I were into conspiracy theories-maybe an attempt to keep Sec. Clinton in the job so that she doesn't have time to get into the 2016 race because they know if she does, they can't field anyone who could give her a run? Or the other theory I've read is they are smearing Amb. Rice so that Kerry will be nominated & they can sneak Scott Brown back into Mass. And yes, today I have waaaay too much time on my hands!

Backhouse, nicely said. It's true, more republicans in Congress are running away from these wacky folks than are standing with them.

Jack, I don't think they are smart enough to have a clue.

Here's a thought to these witch hunting GOPers, why not investigate Darryl Issa. In his zest to skewer the Obama administration over Benghazi (have failed miserably with Fast & Furious), Issa outed a CIA operation which put Americans and the Libyans helping them in danger. There's stupid, then there's double down on stupid GOP style. What a bunch of sore loser, cry babies they are--drives them crazy that President Obama and democrats have stolen their foreign policy cookies.

After Petraeus testified Friday, McCain couldn't run from the TV and microphones fast enough after muttering and sputtering a couple minutes. McCain and Graham, and the others who joined their crusade, owe Ambassador Rice, the Obama administration, and the American people a public apology.

Agree, Jack. Now they are going to spend additional time(and our money) in creating a committee that will "investigate" the initial talking points that Susan Rice, as well as all the officials, were given during the first couple of days after this tragedy. A committee regarding talking points? This folks, is how the GOP spends our money! If there were committees being formed to "investigate" talking points of the GOP, our government would be in committee seven days a week. There are certain members in a certain party who really need their asses kicked out of office.

Agree, bayllie. John McCant is so outraged over Benghazi, yet he skips a meeting on a committee that he sits on so that he can spout more venom on the Today Show. It was more important for him to be in front of a camera than it was for him to be in a meeting that everyone knew was happening for a couple of days prior. The flimsy excuse from his office was a joke, as is the man himself.

No Democratic senator should be given a administration job and reducing the majority in the Senate. Kerry needs to take one for the team and stay in the senate. I just wonder what the breakdown of the count of the letter was 97 GOP - 0 DEMS? Obama should nominate Maria Otero for Sec of State. She was born in Bolivia and is the highest ranking Hispanic in the State Department. Let the GOP chose between further alienating the Hispanic vote and playing obstructionist politics.

Ben, your words described you perfectly.

The fact that Petraeus backed up Ambassador Rice's comments as being the ones she was given by the CIA apparently means nothing to those who refuse to accept the truth. It was the same briefing information given both democrats and republicans in Congress--too bad, the GOP didn't bother reading it. Cover up what exactly? Ambassador Stevens and 3 others are dead; we saw the protests and riots as they were happening, we saw the middle east in turmoil over an idiotic video. Yet republicans would rather spend their time pointing fingers, looking for a scapegoat, concocting conspiracy and cover up theories than doing what needs doing: investigate, find out what happened, why it happened, who did it, and what can we do to prevent a similar attack in the future--no finger pointing or scapegoating required. It's that easy.

Lookit, Rice was told the talking points by the CIA, just like Colin Powell and the other Rice--Condoleeza, who later became Secretary or State after all of the correct facts about WMD came out. Were there more details she didn't talk about in that presser a week after the attack? Maybe. But those details could have been withheld for tactical reasons (e.g. like catching the bad guys) and nothing to do with Obama "hiding" something. This is really, much ado about nothing. Sometimes our government keeps things from us for a reason, and not just for nefarious reasons. These guys are acting like 6th graders.

Another fine example of capitalism run amok!

Who the f*ck deserves a bonus for running a company into it's second bankruptcy?

Hostess Brands, the maker of sweet snacks like Twinkies that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, will ask a bankruptcy judge today to approve a plan that will allow it to pay $1.75 million in bonuses to 19 of its executives. Hostess' decision to file for bankruptcy came amid disputes with its union workers, who threatened a strike that Hostess said imperiled the company's finances. The unions are now protesting Hostess' request for the bonuses, though they are unlikely to prevail, CNN Money reports:

Typical I got MINE "EFF" you mentality of corporate cronies greedy bastards!

Feisty...so many idiots get huge bonuses after running companies into the ground - the worst examples are those many bankers who got such bonuses with taxpayers' bailout money after causing the worst recession since the 1930.

.

One major reason is...there is societal support to keep the money out of the hands of various minorities. Although one bailout to AIG (worth $150 billion in 2008) costs more than the entire government support for the poor, majority of Americans still believe that it costs more to help the poor (often minorities) than bailing out bankers.

.

Sad...without common sense? yeah... a reality ... because prejudices against minorities are widespread in the US.

Susan Rice, we would be in a heck of a better position come the end of the yea

Susan Rice did not tell the truth.

Says that old goat; John McCain

The recently resigned spy chief [General Petraeus ] explained that references to terrorist groups suspected of carrying out the violence were removed from the public explanation of what caused the attack so as not to tip off the groups that the U.S. intelligence community was on their trail, according to lawmakers who attended the private briefings.

Petraeus also said it initially was unclear whether militants infiltrated a demonstration to cover their attack.

Petraeus testified that the CIA draft written in response to the raid referred to militant groups Ansar al-Shariah and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb but those names were replaced with the word “extremist” in the final draft, according to a congressional staffer. The staffer said Petraeus testified that he allowed other agencies to alter the talking points as they saw fit without asking for final review to get them out quickly.

The congressional officials weren’t authorized to discuss the hearing publicly and described Petraeus’ testimony to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., said Petraeus explained that the CIA’s draft points were sent to other intelligence agencies and to some federal agencies for review. Udall said Petraeus told them the final document was put in front of all the senior agency leaders, including Petraeus, and everyone signed off on it. “The assessment that was publicly shared in unclassified talking points went through a process of editing,” Udall said. “The extremist description was put in because in an unclassified document you want to be careful who you identify as being involved.”

It's painfully obvious the racist House GOP members who are resisting Rice's nomination as Secretary of State are disturbed by her because their failed political agendas have become irrelevant on today's America. It is interesting to see the pointless and senseless posts on this site of the Republican Party's dwindling membership base who still cling to their hollow, bankrupt ideology. When is the GOP going to recognize these people and their degenerate ilk are holding them back and how soon before the Grand Old Party scrapes them off its shoe like excrement? A group of 97 House Republicans have signed a letter discouraging President Obama from nominating UN Ambassador Susan Rice to be Secretary of State, saying that Rice "either willfully or incompetently misled the American public in the Benghazi matter."

Please! Are the GOP puppet masters in agreement on this?

Republicans could not even get a majority of their House members to support this letter. Those condemning Rice post 9-11 statements need to watch them in full. She has done nothing wrong here.

Susan Rice is more qualified to be Secretary of State than any of the Bozos criticizing her.

      Dennis

I don't hear any more whining from the Republicans over the possibility of Rice being nominated for Secretary of State than I did the Democrats whining when John Bolton was nominated by President Bush to be UN Ambassador. If I remember it was all about the Democrats, especially Dodd and Biden, wanting some classified documents which the Bush Administration refused to give them. I also remember the Democratic Senators whining when they filibustered about a dozen of Bush's Federal Judges. Remember the gang of 12 that worked out a deal and agreed to give Bush some Judges but required him to withdraw the rest.

Those on the left that are trying to play the race and gender cards are the ones that are whining. All Congress is asking for is who changed the talking points in the information given to Ambassador Rice and why? Director Petraeus stated the CIA report was changed but does not know, or won't say, who made the changes.

The left didn't like Bolton and the right don't like Susan Rice, it's political. The Democrats wanted some information from Bush and wouldn't allow a vote on Bolton if they didn't get it. Now the Republicans want something from Obama and will hold up the nomination of Rice if they don't get what they want. It's called "tit for tat", and "what goes around comes around. "

BTW, Bolton didn't hate the UN just the corruption that was taking place in the UN. The corruption is still taking place.

Big difference and you know it.

sfcret should know the difference, but from what I've seen of his posts I don't think he does.

      Dennis,

I had had the same thought--that House members don't vote on Cabinet appointments, so why are they making such a big fuss? Then I wondered whether they are doing it because not enough Republican Senators are going to follow McCain and Graham, so they're adding their voices to the chorus to make it sound louder.

What's interesting to me is that Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) stood with McCain and Graham for photo ops last week, but since then she has maintained a low profile. I have a feeling that she got an earful from people like me in this State telling her to stop the crap and get to work on real business.

But then the Republican party also wants to elect people who hate government to run the government, and put people on the science committee who don't believe in science, so maybe it's a GOP thing, outside the bounds of common sense.

I say maybe Petraeus is flat out lying, the guy cheated on his wife, if a mans wife can't trust him, who can. If someone would lie and cheat on their wife, I sure as heck would not trust them to be honest with me. I used to think this Petraeus was a stand up guy, I have changed my mind based on his affair. Call me old fashioned but a man just don't cheat on his wife, it is the ultimate betrayal of trust and honor. Susan Rice read the text released to her by the intelligence services. It was the same text released to Congress. It did not reveal the details regarding Al Queda, probably because we did not want to let them know we were in hot pursuit of the perpetrators. More information was released later.

Now republicans are once again ignoring the facts in order to attack the messenger. This tactic was used against Valerie Jarret after White House security was breeched by a publicity seeking couple and against Eric Holder following false claims by two ATF agents, intending to get their supervisor in trouble in the local ATF in Phoenix, Arizona. Is the fact that the persons attacked are all African American members of the Obama administration driving these attacks?

In each case, the target of Republicans' attack were not accountable for the incidents in any direct way. Yet Republicans continued to proceed with character assassination after the facts were known and the accountability clarified by determining and naming the source of the problems. When may it occur to Republicans that gross distortions of facts to attack a preferred target is dishonest and futile, except for creating false rumors. They cannot be doing it out of pure stupidity.

The level of sheer, unadulterated effrontery that's being displayed here absolutely boggles the mind... I cast about in vain for a simile or metaphor that's equal to this staggering display of hubris that's being shoved, steaming, before the man who was just reelected with an unequivocal mandate, as if to say, "Here's what we think of democracy, the people's will, and doing our jobs."

I truly am forced to the conclusion that the leadership of the House Republican caucus have lost their ever-lovin', blue-eyed, collective marbles. The culture of obstructionism apparently has now become so deeply ingrained with these people that they've lost their capacity to deal with the world in any way but to deflect/obstruct/deny/reject.

All of the signatories of this revolting scrap of infamy ought to be recalled forthwith by the voters of their districts; it is as plain as the sunrise that they are no longer mentally competent to discharge the duties of their offices. It's up to the President to nominate and to the congress to "Advise and Consent".

Whether Amb. Rice is nominated is up to the President. Whoever is nominated will be subject to review and consent by the congress. When you see a story like this you're seeing the "advice" part. Republicans are saying that they would prefer a different choice. They would prefer (believe it or not!) John Kerry to head State, and he even has a "booster club" of sorts amongst the ranks.

Republicans would prefer Kerry at State over Sec Def, but either way they would like another shot at a senate seat in Massachusetts, which a Kerry appointment would give them.

Rice is at best a controversial choice, and would be so regardless of recent events. The President will decide if that is his best choice and course of action and then we will see. My guess is that he will nominate Kerry for State, and Defense will go to an uncontroversial moderate.

(Rumor has been that Joe Biden has always wanted SoS and that whoever gets the post will be steeping down to be replaced by the veep, with Hillary becoming VP, but Biden has hinted that he would like to take another run at the WH, which would obviously negate any thoughts of changing jobs.)

Kerry wouldnt be a bad SoS. I think he would be a good choice over Rice. Biden would be a lousy SoS and wouldnt get as much static as Rice (if not more). I think putting Hillary in the position of VP definitely props her up as a 2016 run. She would likely get my vote (depending on the GOP ticket), however if things do not get better under Obama I doubt it would help Hillary, in fact possibly hurt. I wont mind seeing a Hillary run in 16' in fact like i said would have received my vote in 08 if she were the nominee. She would have received my vote in 12'.

Dangerfield: it is not Congress that gives its advice and consent, it is the Senate. Under the current makeup of Congress, it is almost as if we have four branches, House, Senate, Executive and Judicial. The President ought to send a nice response letter to the Representives, thanking them for their opinion and letting them know he will be passing on the information to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to use or ignore as he sees fit.

Ceasar: I don't think that either VP Biden or Sec. Hillary Clinton want to go through a nomination process with the current make up of the Senate.

She has been part of the State Department's efforts, worked closely with Sec of State Clinton, and helped restore US credibility within the UN. She was a valedictorian, Phi Beta Kappa at Stanford, a Truman scholar and a Rhodes Scholar with a PhD from Oxford. She has the qualifications and the work experience to do the job because she has been groomed for it and proved herself worthy of it. If President Obama makes the decision to nominate her, I think she would do a great job.

Remember, the GOP picked Willard for President and he is qualified for that office. That being said, Ambassador Rice is more qualified than ole Willard would be for Sec of State.

Apparently there is no middle ground. Democrates revel at the feet of all mighty OBAMA. He is all good , all honest, all truthful. The GOP is ALL BAD, HORRIBLE, LIERS, EVIL INCARNATE!!!

REALLY?! GET A GRIP! Both sides are politicians. I vote for who I think will do the best job- not by party.

And I really am tired of the protected Obama- Quit throwing the RACE CARD on everything.

And please read the "Obama Care" Document. The taxes and penalties on the middle class and the small business, and the farmers will bring the middle class to its knees. The economics will destroy the middle class.

The middle class can not continue to support those who can not or will not get insurance. Where do you think the money will come from? Oh yes the rich - which includes most of the people in the congress. That money will not be enough to pay for 41% of the people in the US medical. As the illegals continue to come into the US-and really they will - cause we just hung a sign "FREE Everything - Come on IN". How will we pay for the growing poor and those who just milk the system? Think about this- has the Government ever run a program with out loosing tons of money in the process?

Lets hold our government accountable- no matter who is in office. Try not to be so dogmatic - and I would love to see the press report all the news - not pick and choose it.

Let Obama choose Rice,What difference is it going to make? She will either do the job or fall flat on her face.It really makes no difference. The republicans have to realize that no democrat is going to listen to them anyway so once again, why bother?A word to the wise for ALL politicians,Do what you were put in office to do.There is always room in the unemployment line if you don't.With that in mind we all need to quit bickering and get down to business while we still have a free country to do so in.

The 97 signatories of this letter are "deeply troubled", all right...

...but not in the way that they are pretending to be.

This charade has gone on for far too long. STFU and get to work already!

In my opinion, I think those 97 House Republicans are acting like a Bunch of JERKS and they know it. They are such sore Losers in this election, even thought the held unto the House, that they are trying to help the Senate Republicans rebuke Susan Rice, lead by their Head Sore Losers and Jerks, Sens. McCain, Graham and Ayotte.

Unless, I am wrong the last time I looked the Senate is the only Body to Confirm Cabinet Positions. If I were President Obama, I would welcome this Fight. I think the SANE Part of the Public will be behind him.

This is all the Republican House Thinks their job is to INSULT People's Reputations and Intelligence. What about the Country going off of an ECONOMIC CLIFF?

The rest of the Romney Sore Losers and Fox News, well they WILL just have to SLIT THEIR THROATS OR WRISTS IN PROTEST AND THEIR HEADS EXPLODE.

@TalkingPoints, Why you must be a self-proclaimed "Progressive" ... it's easy to tell from the inflammatory nature of your hateful rhetoric.

The Democrats won a close election and gained a few seats in Congress ... that does NOT mean the Republican Party is obligated to roll over, play dead and allow the Dems to do whatever stupidity they please. The House of Representatives is still controlled by Republicans. There is a reason for this .... when you figure it out, please let us know ! My guess is you'll get it WRROOONNNNGGGGG !!!!!!

You get an "F" for logic. With Eric Holder as attorney general, this would have been quashed under the Voting Rights Law if anything untoward had happened. Nice alibi, but you just cannot accept that U.S. citizens saw just how dangerous Obama can be with a super majority ... and they didn't like it !!!

You seem to be one of them. OH WELL!

Bush stole the first Election with the Help of a Conservative Supreme Court. President Obama won by Majority Electoral College and Popular Vote BOTH TIMES.

False equivalency: Democrats blocked John Bolton's appointment to the UN because they disagreed with his neoconservatie ideology of using US military force to produce results, rather than engaging the international community through diplomacy.

Susan Rice is being blocked from promotion to Secretary of State because Republicans want to make a stink for the sake of making a stink. Republicans don't disagree with Susan Rice, unless you call disagreeing with getting the Arab states to support taking down Qaddafy a legitimate complaint.

The sad part is, Susan Rice has actually been successful in her post and would be a dynamic SOS. But, that's the Republicans for you, Party before country, every time.

The Republican Party: Opposing a nomination that may or may not occur based on a controversy over talking points that may or may not have been changed. You know they are stretching when their focus is not on what happened in Benghazi, not on how the administration immediately responded on the ground in Benghazi, but completely on what particular language the administration used to describe what happened in the immediate aftermath, when stories are always fluid anyway. That's it. That's their big scandal. That the CIA has classified intelligence that it doesn't always share immediately with the general public. That's it. Which we already knew because keeping classified intelligence secret until after everything is sorted out is the CIA's job.

Hey, anything to distract from the corner they've painted themselves into on economic policy.

The American People really need to vote out all of GOP! we need to vote them out in 2014 and keep them out! GOP lost the election sourly, because of there self- contained alternative reality bubble that they lived in and then it popped around them .They were shell-shocked at first. Now GOP is acting like spoiled little children with lying even more then before. I truly believe they are mentally insane. But do you notes that GOP is mostly overweight white males that maybe going through male menopause or maybe because GOP are liars, racist male chauvinism pigs.

The last thing this country needs is a one party government.I don't care which side anybody is on but a one party government is fundamentally a socialist government. That is the one thing i would not accept, no matter who is proposing it.everything else within reason is open to negotiation.

A little good news, Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu is dropping a push to ask voters to triple the state's vehicle license fee rates.

Bad news the Los Angeles City Council voted to ask for a half-cent sales tax increase. The current sales tax is 8.75 percent. The request to increase it to 9.25 percent will go on the March ballot.

You seem to conveniently forget that 2 years after Obama's first election, the Democratic Party got shellacked in Nov, 2010 as a direct response to Obama ramming through Obamacare. The raw abuse of power from the oval office had results ! If Obama goes power crazy again, the results will be the same in 2014 !

      JIM

The 2010 election is the direct results of the Koch's organization"Americans for Prosperity" distorting the purpose of Obamacare, busing phoneys around to town hall meetings to protest and project a false vision of the peoples rejection of the law. They also convinced the low information voters that Obama was the boogie man out to destroy americans freedom and turn America into a socialist state with him as the dictator who would go around chopping peoples heads off.

America is finally awake now so I don't think 2010 is going to happen again, matter of fact I think just the opposite is going to happen in 2014.

I hope the President nominates Rice as the best person for the job. The House has no role in deciding cabinet appointments so 96 non-deciding members signing a letter should be taken for what it is--a distraction.

If i were to run for public office, i would state clearly that i would want to rewrite these one sided free trade agreements that encourage American industry to move overseas.I would'nt be in asia trying to drum up business. As for the Republicans it would be time to meet with all of them and have a one time grip session,no holds barred. Then bring in the Democrats to join in and just get all the dirty laundry out in the open. After that we would find out where the common ground is and go from there. Those who donot wish to take part in something like that can go home and explain it to their voters.

Progressive Power has been very 'troubled' by the GOP?RNC "Caucus Conspiracy." The GOP/Tea Beggers do not want to talk about their 'conspiracy.' On Janruary 20, 2009 the GOP/Tea Beggers 'conspired' to destroy the American People, the US Economy, and the Office Of the Presidency. Now what the "Fourteen GOP Felon's" 'conspired' to do on thiis evening is very 'troubling.' Read Draper's Book America! It is a must read.
