Expanding on our election autopsy report in First Thoughts this morning about the white vote, since 1976, Democrats have never won white voters. Jimmy Carter, a Southerner, came the closest in 1976, winning 48% of it.
Since then, Democrats have ranged from 34% (Walter Mondale in 1984) to 44% (Bill Clinton in 1996).
Obama, in his first election, won 43% of the white vote, the second-highest number for a Democrat since Carter. His 39% in 2012 puts him further down the list of Democrats in the last 10 elections, but only slightly below the average 40.6% share for Democrats through the years.
But more significant: the white vote has become less important. The percentage whites make up of the electorate has steadily declined, from a high of 89% in 1976 to a low of 72% in 2012.

I told my husband in 2008 that I believed a majority of this country had moved away from racists and bigots, do you have any idea how many times I've had to tell him I was wrong?
When was the last time 30+ states signed petitions for secession after their party lost to a black man for the second time?

How is this on par? Obama lost 4 percentage points and received far less than recent candidates and below the average and thats considered "on par". Sorry Backhouse but Obama didnt get the same as Clinton in his reelection. Did you notice that Clinton's percentage went up in his reelection and one of those people was me. This is nonsense. Of course race plays a factor in voting look at the black vote. Why not break this down by economics rather than race and see what happens? Why is that such a bad thing to state? The role of government should be a discussion because of the polarization caused by both candidates. We should talk about income inequality and we are having a national discussion about what a "fair share" of tax paid by wealthy. On the other side we should have a discussion about the role of government assistance and the problems of having 50% of the taxpayers in this country not funding any revenue into the federal income tax coffers. We need to have a discussion on the role of government assistance in how it impacts self reliance and income mobility. Why is that such a dirty topic to you Obama supporters?
What does this have to do with the price of fish?
The white vote will continue to lose significance as our demographic numbers trend toward 'minority' voters. Those voters with African, Asian and Hispanic roots will soon be the majority in the U.S.
Which political party understands and accepts that? Which political party has policies and plans to educate and assimilate immigrants and the poor, to help them become productive, employed members of our society and to become the next generation of American leaders?
This is one of the most important issues we face. We must be prepared for this future, all of us, no matter what our race, religion or ethnicity.
Here we go again...another 4 years of "white vs. black vs. rich vs. poor et all". What a divided Nation we've become with more yet to be.

People do not dislike Obama because of his color. Republicans hate the Dems, Dems hate the repubs. Color is not an issue. It is the platform that person stands for in their eyes.

Perhaps when the GOPTP can give a justified explanation as to why CEOs merit a 250% pay raise, while the working class merits a reduction in pay, then we can have a rational discussion on the rich vs. the poor. It is a case they can't make, but will try like hell to legislate, which the GOPTP found just wasn't to the liking of the majority of Americans.

@Kirk-2957282, Sorry to disappoint you but blacks have been voting for non black democratic candidates at high percentage rates for years. Al Gore got 90% of the black vote and last time I checked he was a white guy. Clinton was supported by blacks at around 82 to 83 percent. People keep assuming that black people voted for Obama because he is black. If you think that black people would have voted for a black republican with the same policies as Romney/GOP then you really are naive. The GOP started off by calling the first black President the "food stamp President". This was highly offensive to most black people. I won't even get into all the questions about his birth/citizenship, transcript, etc... Romney was such a bad candidate that he got less black votes than McCain. Hell McCain/Palin/Tea Party had rallies that had people walking around with toy gorillas with nooses around the neck. Why would many black voters ever vote Republican after seeing that?

Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which ownsNBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kickback hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses help Obama “spread the wealth around.”
MAKE PUERTO RICO A STATE.
Why? Who’s asking for a 51st state? Who’s asking for millions of new welfare recipients and governmententitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan began the "welfare queen" chatter, began the white victimization strategy--it's affirmative action that cost a job or a slot at college, it's those evil unions which caused jobs to be outsourced overseas, it's those other people that are driving down wages, etc.--none of which is true or ever was true. It was all a political strategy. American demographics were already shifting in 1976. The southern strategy worked fairly well for the GOP for years but now, as Bush 43 recognized in 2004, Romney and other republicans discovered in 2008, and again in 2012, banking on the white vote isn't necessarily going to put them in the win column.

The great thing about this last election is that liberals won. So now what? It really is time to take a polls of Obama supporters to find out what percentage think that raising taxes on the top earners is going to wipe out the deficit. Maybe Obama supporters haven't noticed that no Democrat controlled Congress has put forth a balanced federal budget in over 40 years. The Republican controlled Congress gave Clinton his balanced budget for part of his term. Likewise no Republican president has signed a balanced budget in almost 50 years. So it is really funny that now liberals feel the Democrats are poised to do something they haven't done for over 40 years.

As to your second question regarding plans for his second term ... here's a little article from the Journal ... you should accept it as a source since your poster girl Peggy works there.
I know that the majority of Americans are not racists but the election of a black President just emboldened and pissed off the ones that are.
In 2016 or by 2020 at the latest when TX becomes a swing state along with AZ the Electoral Map becomes a serious problem for Republicans as Democrats will only need to carry 12 states to win.

Reddev--no they arent connected. Income inequality is not connected to tax policy. If you havent noticed that most taxes on the wealthy (not the superwealthy but the working professionals) either get passed on in terms of increased fees to their clients or they reduce consumption and retain the same net take home pay. In addition, the CBO based on common sense no less, showed that income inequality is due to the education gap, immigration and government entitlement programs transfering wealth from our young workers to our wealthy seniors. You cant use the CEO example because it makes no sense. If a CEO got a larger pay increase, maybe he increased the revenue or net profits to the company thereby increasing the net worth or value of the company many times more thna his salary enriching you in your 401k plan. You act like a CEO making money offends you. Does it bother you that Albert Pujols signed a big contract or that someone else got a big basketball deal and then was a bust? It happens and the anamolies you guys like to point out are not what rules and policy should be based on.

I agree that in many instances thats true and I agree that AFrican Americans have been voting democrat for a while before Obama. What I dont get is that there is a difference between political pandering and speech and actual policies. It seems to me that its actual democratic policies that prevent education reform and retain the education gap for african americans and latinos. Its democratic policies that allow greater and greater illegal immigration depressing wages and preventing income mobility for the middle class. Its democratic policies that dont incent or foster family units that have created the environment for 70% of african american babies to be born to single mothers ensuring them a life of poverty and generational welfare. Its democrat economic policies that have eliminated self reliance and personal accountability for the choices one makes in life thereby preventing upward economic mobility. How have african americans fared over the last 4 years in terms of poverty rates and unemployment and how have whites done? Obama might talk a big game but his policies have benefited whites more. How has Obama leveled the playing field except to promise to take away from one to give to another?

Of course the Country is divided. Republicans are the party of "The Exploiters", or, "Takers". Democrats represent, and are, the party of "The Exploitee's", or "Prey". Race and ethnicity of non whites historically are, in one way or another, for most, "prey". it is if you are talking about take-home pay. Income is not taxed based on the earned amount because deductions alone are not equal for all: people who have no children, no spouses, no mortgage, etc. will always take home less than those who do.
Now, if you take into account the fact that "regular" people don't have access to loopholes, deferrals, offshore accounts, offshore addreses, etc., you will see that take-home pay is not fair to the rest of us who don't have the capabilities of manipulating our incomes.
To dispute your claim I will refer to one person: Mitt Romney. In order to pay HIGHER tax rate, Mr. Romney had his accountants manipulate his charitable deduction so that he would not claim what's allowable by law. Why, do you ask? If he paid less than what he already showed (after his maniulation of #'s), his claim that the rich are overtaxed would have been disputed by his own taxes.
But I can guarantee you that Romney's accountants are working on fixing that overpayment already.

obama won for two reasons – he received the majority of the black vote (there goes the “they don’t vote on skin color” idea) and because he pulled in psychologists and a ton of data to tell him how best to reach you. He told you want you wanted to hear in a very methodical way. Hispanics wanted to be told that their family members who are here illegally would be allowed to stay, the young women wanted to hear that they could get free birth control and access to abortions, those who have CHOSEN not to work wanted to hear that they would not lose their ability to collect benefits, the greedy wanted to hear that it was not only acceptable to bash those with more but that it is ok to covet what they have, etc. obama is very charismatic but that only means he can talk a good line of bs. Bayliee--that is just nonsense. Romney didnt manipulate anything and regular people dont pay any income tax that need loopholes, deferrals and such. Romney is like Warren Buffet and there are very few people that make that kind of money and taxing them more is not going to change things. I dont have any issue with that. But lets set the record straight. Having money offshore doesnt reduce your taxes. Individuals are taxed on worldwide income. Second, so what if he had money offshore. Should it bother Germany that a rich resident has money with Chase or Bank of America? That is just stupid. Last, Romney's low rate was because much of his money was made as an investor and thus taxed at capital gains rates because those earnings were already taxed inside the corporation. We have a two level of tax system which is why we tax dividends and capital gains at lower rates. Charitable contributions are deducted by regular people too Bayliee. But if you want to get rid of all loopholes, deductions such as the mortgage deduction and child care credits and make it fair, simple and progressive but fair to everyone I think thats what Romney wanted to do.
But my original point doesnt apply to the super wealthy. It applies to the working wealthy. Sorry but a doctor making 300,000 a year will pay more in tax alot more by the way. He will either pass those rates on to his patients or consume less which will really just be a job killer and hurt everyone. Its not like the doctor isnt already paying his fair share.

Until those of color want it to be an issue. The race card is dropped every time a black person demonstrates ineptitude. Blacks seem to think that they are picked on because of their color. They refuse to believe that somebody has expressed dislike for a black person because they lack the ability to perform whatever function they are supposed to be doing. Back in West Texas in the 1950's, Democrats were the premiere party. In some places, you were lucky to find a tiny room with a card table setup to register as a Republican. After LBJ pushed the Great Society and civil rights, that all changed. LBJ, a fierce Texas Democrat, prophetically foretold that it would happen, but he thought the sacrifice was too important for the good of Texas and the good of the entire nation not to make. Poverty in Texas was horrific in his district at the time. He really had no choice to be true to his own sense of justice.
Wheather white, black, brown, red or yellow (or pink with purple polka dots for that matter) people tend to vote for candidates that think like them. Why would one vote for someone who doesn't agree with them to a certain degree. No two people will totally agree on every issue but surely there are more issues each voter agrees with one candidate on than the other. Simply put people voted for the people they felt best exemplified their own opinions. Trying to break it down into demographics seems silly. I am a white male who is retired from a long career and who served in our armed forces. I don't happen to agree with most of the planks in the Republican platform but there are also some on the Democratic party's planks I don't agree with either. I vote for Democrats (hasn't always been that way) not really because of party title but by what the current party and it's leadership are pushing in their agenda.
I have voted for Republicans in the past and may do so again if one comes along who I believe is better than the Democratic opponent. I may do as I have done before and vote 3rd party. I am one of the folks that voted for John Anderson as I knew how Reagan screwed up California but wasn't about to vote for the Democratic candidate either.

I have a hypothesis for this past election. The GOP seemed really intent on isolating people who vote. Or at least their crassness was self-inflicted. Whether it was Mitt Romney and his 47% comment, Murdoch and his "rape is God's will" comment, or Akin and his "legitimate rape" comment, these things are guaranteed to isolate people who vote.
Unfortunately, many in the GOP don't seem to have learned the lesson. They blame the electorate for their losses and call them a bunch of moochers. That isn't going to win them any extra votes and reasonable folk will think they're just a bunch of loud-mouthed a-holes.
A business wouldn't be so stupid as to write off people whom they assume are going to competitors. They'd try to win them over.

We are a democracy and we all need to work together to insure that the next generation has the skills they need to get ahead. I've been a Girl Scout leader and also led my Girl Scout Division's Day Camps. I brought in people from all walks of life to educate those girls. They appreciated it. And I know this because I run into my Scouts now and then and they are thankful for the education they received and the opportunities they had. They are all beautiful young women pursuing great careers and enjoying their lives.

I don't know what's happened in your life, but obviously something very bad. What you describe definitely isn't a republican issue though, it isn't even a political issue. I've often wondered what an election would look like if polling (at least pre-election) was illegal. What if candidates had no idea of who was thinking what and where they were. History, I'm certain would still have them gravitate to the traditional "battleground states", but it would arguably be nice to not be told every 15 - 20 minutes what 'suburban white woman, specifically those with 17 toes, average 8 different nail polishes per week and love doing yoga' are allegedly thinking.
For the media to always act as though they only report the news vs drive it is rather silly on its face.

But as the above posters pointed out and the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United, it is unconstitutional to bar the media (companies) from being involved in the election process. I wonder if any of the above posters realize that they've just tacitly agreed with the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling.

There's a difference between freedom of the press, freedom of speech, the right to take election polls to determine what people think, and Citizens United which deemed corporations equal to people. Corporations are not people, they are businesses selling products and pushing policies beneficial to them and only them. They already had a voice in elections, they could donate their personal money, form PACs, political action committees. My guess is that at least one of those SCOTUS justices who ruled corporations as the equivalent of people wishes he had his vote back as we watched the attempt to "BUY" this election. One millionaire backed Newt Gingrich, one backed Rick Santorum, others back the other wacky ones; all those millionaires kept those unqualified candidates in the GOP primary race far longer than at any other time--that's Citizens United.
I do not buy the political pundit chatter that claims Citizens United had little to no impact on the 2012 elections. Do not mistake failed candidates such as Romney or Mourdock or Akin as proof that money doesn't matter. It does.

President Obama believes in a balanced approach (as do I) but has only concretely described the taxing portion of the scale, not the cutting portion. I say let Texas be it's own Country - then we won't have to provide them any Federal Aid - they will have to pay all the import taxes. All their citizens will have to fend for themselves - no Social Security, No Medicaid or Medicare, No Public Education, No FEMA when Tornadoes or Hurricanes Hit, No National Guard or Border Security, No Military Bases to help local economies, No Roads, Railroads or Airports(FAA), No Farm Aid, No Grants for Research and Development, No Postal Service. I sure I am leaving a ton out. They will have to set up their own Trade agreements with the USA and other countries like Mexico. If Mexico invades, then they are on their own to defend themselves.
They will have to find a way to pay for all of it by themselves - any other States in more than welcome to join them. Just remember what beign apart of the USA is ALL about.

I believe most that post on these boards actually do go out and read many different sources for their news and continue to back that information up with links to their sources. Regarding what the media has done with news, well, they're selling something and us as the "buyers" will align with those outlets that present news in a fashion we like to hear. Personally, I really like Rachel Maddow and her ability to break down a topic.
As for NBC, they post articles, and we all respond to them yay or nay (hopefully with civility), and they take the time to moderate the boards so that we can. Whether you like their articles or not, here you are posting on them and people are responding to your posts.

Having watched Part I on PBS last night, I plan to watch Part II of Ken Burn's "The Dust Bowl" tonight. Great reminder of a manmade environmental disaster that didn't have to happen. We might keep "The Dust Bowl" in mind as we watch mountain tops blown off to make it easier to get the coal while rivers are clogged with the debris; as we watch "fracking" make it possible to ignite water at the kitchen sink; as we ponder Keystone XL pipeline and oil sands with the potential to pollute a huge water aquifer which provides drinking water to millions.

I worked for the re-elect President Obama campaign here in SC and was confident that he would win. I have tried to keep my comments civil to my pub "friends" on these newsvines. They continue to insult, demean, degrade and lie about the president and his family. I guess being a "good loser" has become extinct, just like the pub party will if they dont grow up and see our country for what it really is....diverse, progressive, intelligent, intent on preserving the right to vote, with full and equal rights for women including making their own reproductive decisions, with the majority refusing to let extremists legislate from their own brand and interpretation of the Bible.
That being said, I also felt confident that Mitt Romney would be a dim memory by Thanksgiving, and hoped that Karl Rove would completely disappear. Unfortunately, Mitt can't seem to stop yakking (lieing) yet. As my friends, neighbors and family gather around our table this Thursday, and continue our tradition of each person offering a prayer of thanks for our blessings, mine will be that our country was saved by savvy americans from the misogynistic, white, entitled, soulless, non-compassionate, 1%er who is completely disconnected from the reality of most americans' lives and has no business in the White House.

Julia, being a good loser is just about as extinct on this blog as being a good winner. I don't mean you, yours was a well stated and reasonable post. The level of hate however, being vented by the extreme left is no less nor strident than that portrayed by the extreme right. The only thing I have learned by following many, many posts on Newsvine since the election is that our elected officials are not the only problem. President Obama cannot bring together a nation that does not want to be brought together and if Newsvine is any indication, the people have moved further apart since the election not closer.

As a Native American, I love the fact that white voters are on the decline; after a history of white Europeans invading our homeland, branding us as savages, stealing land, and driving us onto reservations it does my heart good to see the tables turning. Just maybe some real justice will find its way onto the scene and all Americans will finally be treated as equals. With Thanksgiving coming up, people should remember that had it not been for the Native Americans showing mercy to the white invaders, Europeans would never have survived that first winter; history shows clearly how that mercy was repaid. American history books should be rewritten to tell the truth.

NCAN....I've done tons of reading about Native American history and I'm always stunned by the cruelty of the first Europeans......and yes, it's difficult to get to the "truth" about your people's history. Interesting thing about the "native Americans" is that many of the tribes owned slaves. They also continued to own slaves even after the Emancipation Proclimation was ratified. They were not always the victims that they would like everyone to believe they were.

As demographics change, so do political agendas and interests. When you say "fix this country as a whole", how do you do that without knowing what voters want? Black voters, gay voters, women voters, may have different opinions on how we "fix this country as a whole", from the Civil Rights Act of 1965 to recent marriage equality laws.

Not every voter thinks deeply about politics, ideology, or policy. Some people vote for one or another candidate according to the last impression they'd formed from some political ad. How else does one explain how the Gallup poll goes up and down every day?
I also think it's difficult to unseat an incumbent. I was shocked when Bush won his second term. One person who told me they voted for Bush said he was giving Bush another chance to "finish what he started." The pundits tried to spin that win into a mandate for W. It wasn't a mandate, it was people not wanting to throw out an incumbent. He ended up one of the least popular Presidents ever.
This election was so significant in the fact that just because your white doesn't mean that your going to be elected. No longer can a politician run on just color alone (maybe in the beet-red south), now anyone that wants to be an elected official has to bring forth a viable and realistic program that will benefit all of us Americans. Yes, and if the republican party puts forth another candidate who spouts the same type of divisive language that Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Michelle Bachmann used during the republican primary and general election campaigns the Blacks, Hispanics, and women of this country will vote for the democrat candidate again, regardless of what race either candidate is.
At the end of the day it's about policies, not skin color for most voters. Those who vote based upon race exist in both parties and are a reflection of the ignorance that still exists in America regarding people of color.

It is the dmocratic party and the media that is keeping racism alive and well today. They are also dividing this country. This country has been more divided in the last 4 years than I can remember. Obama, helped to fuel this when he got involved the the black professor and others, blaming police and white people before hed any of the facts in front of him. He should not have gotten involved in the first place. Take an honest look at his mentors. It is almost impossible for him not to be a racist. Even though the democrats and the media say it is a lie, Obama apologized to the world for America, showing that he does not believe in our policies and constitution. Gets his supreme court judges in office ( Obama care was approved by one justice.... how can something be so vague that it causes a split decision among our supreme court that was sworn to uphold the constitution and one judge (who happens to have been put in to ffice by you know who) makes the deciding ruling. Our country is going to hell.
The GOP needs to sit back and agree to everything Obama wants to do until it gets to the point that the Americans who voted for him realizes that we are in a collision course. All it takes is a little common sense to see we are headed in the wrong direction.

Bush blew through Clinton's surplus in his first year. The 2004 deficit reached $415 billion, a record. Still, its real size is masked by the fact that Bush has shifted $150 billion from the Social Security trust fund in order to make the shortfall look smaller. It's like pretending you're richer when you move money from one pocket to another. Both sums have to be repaid, so the real amount borrowed is the $415 billion nominal deficit plus the $150 billion from Social Security or $565,000,000,000 billion.
And Carter save the dollar and did the dirty work in between two sh..bag Republican administrations. Had it not been for carter, America would have had moved to total failure. Unfortunately Reagan ensured that we headed there anyway. PEOPLE - KNOW your history. Monetary policy, deficit spending, the downward spiral from what Reagan created. He was a poor leader and not a great communicator. He set the standard for cheating America out of its wealth. And all while Carter remains chastised.
If we had followed Carter's vision, America would be strong, the ship safe in deep water, the world following our lead.
Proof is where we are today. At war, poisoned our EU friends, poor, frozen credit, and a much larger division between rich and poor, and a divided America where individualism is greater than the whole.
