VIDEO: First Read Minute: A day of conflict and 'gifts'

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro talk about yesterday's busy day in politics that included a presidential press conference and words from two of President Obama's former rivals, both Mitt Romney and John McCain.

This guy never know when to QUIT!

What I DO know is, re-elected President Obama was the best present this girl could of ever wished for!

I'm not sure whether it was a belated Birthday present or early Christmas "gift"...

Having Willard and Queen Annie no where near the White House will allow me to sleep soundly for the next 4 years!

Poor Mitt! Poor John!

The only "gift" you had to give, was unwanted.

The American People have spoken twice and neither time was it for you.

Sorry! That's just the way it is!

I just cannot imagine with all the crap that has been going on for the last four years how a McCain/Palin presidency would have worked out. I cannot for the life of me see anything good coming out of a republican anything, especially because I am one of the 47% that does not pay taxes. I retired, and drew S.S. and am on medicare. So I am a definite taker. However it seems like the 44 years I worked and paid in ought to count for something.

John in Battlecreek: You, sir are not a taker. You've earned those benefits, and be proud, be very proud to be a part of the "47"! The "47's" represent some of the very best Americans in this country, in my humble opinion!

I am still waiting for Obama's Benghazi critics to tell us what they should of done. Are they advocating that the US launch air strikes or send in ground forces in a city of 1 million people in a country we are not at war with? A country with a fledgling pro-US government and the citizens of Benghazi proved their pro-US leanings by demonstraing in the tens of thousands against the extremists and then by driving the extremists out of town. How would what they wanted to do would have made the situation any better?

You have to believe that there are some phone calls going on between worried Republicans:

"Say, anyone able to get hold of Mittens and tell him to shut up! He's destroying us for the next election too.

Nah, on second thought, that would require honest introspection, something alien to the Republican creed!

The problem is I understand what Mr. Romney is trying to say, but how he chooses to say it is just awful. This happened throughout the campaign and really sunk him as he left himself wide open for his opponents to twist his words against him. It was almost too easy.

We'll try again in 2016. With someone made of more presidential material.

As to 2016? I hope we do have two good candidates competing. The United States is best served by two, well functioning political parties, who have honest disagreements, but can negotiate. We lack that now.

President Obama told the majority of Americans that he would represent their interests in Washington. Governor Romney told 5% of Americans that he would represent their interests in Washington, and that they should use their immense wealth and power to try to threaten, intimidate, and deceive the rest of America into falling in line.

The mystery isn't why Obama's approach worked better, it's why anybody in the country who values liberty in the slightest would have voted for Romney and thereby voted to have their lives controlled and dominated socially, politically, and especially economically by the small cadre of monied elitists he represents.

Romney is providing the Republican party with an essential service now, though. By turning on him, the party can pretend that it is rejecting the plutocracy he embodies, which is a critical step for them to ever return to relevance on the national stage. Bobby Jindal is a great weather vane for where the party establishment is, and if he has enough phony backbone to stand up to Romney, it's pretty clear that this is their strategy for now.

If there was even a chance that president Obama would have invited The Flip Flopper to the WH to seek out some ideas from him, that chance, imo, went out the window yesterday when that conference call was released. The Flip Flopper insulted nearly every demographic under the sun, and, president Obama's supporters. I know that the president is offended by this and I've no doubt that The Flip Flopper won't be seeing any part of the WH unless he signs up for a guided tour of the common areas.

At the first press conference of his second term, President Obama reminded me no less of Gulliver, beset by the tiny people of Lilliput.

When are we going to grow a media/opposition party to the stature of Barack Obama? The President is focused on the nation's security and prosperity, filling posts with qualified people, managing his administration with insight and fairness, and there are the media and Republicans, kicking up dust in his face, not contributing in any way, shape or manner to forming a more perfect union, if anything, endangering our national security, certainly diminishing our political dialogue.

Do the media and the Republicans have any idea, any idea at all, how really bad they look to the rest of America?

No, the Republicans will likely NEVER "get it"! Right now they are wringing their hands over their unsucessful "media outreach to the young millennials" as if they simply used the wrong campaign slogan or didn't make enough phone calls! They still FAIL to see that their downfall is due to their basic entitlements for the rich platform and their BLATANTLY bigoted policies! They still think their ONLY problem was just a slight miscalculation in their media "strategy" and don't yet grasp that it is their CORE POLICIES and BELIEFS that have offended and repulsed over half of our country! Until they WAKE UP and realize that their entire CORE VALUE system is completely self-serving and A ss-backwards, they will CONTINUE to fail!...

In yesterday's new photo op, Barry indicated that rather than focusing on Susan Rice as a target, the media should focus on him. I agree.

When will the media do their jobs and use investigative methods to probe the Obama Administration? Or, is the media content with building the Barry image further?

There will come a time of realitive calm before someone actually reports an item that will be a challenge for the administration. Then let's see what comes out, how the media will jump the wagon to out-news the others.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the media that built Barry, take Barry down?

Well new day, just how much revenue will be received from the 1% crowd, and at the current rate of government wastefull spending, how many days or months will this revenue support? When it shows that it isn't many days, will the ceiling be lowered?

Why not a flat tax rate for all payers, then you will see the 'fairness' you libs are searching for.

Why not also remove waste from our ever growing government? Do we actually require all the various departments of regulation? Wasn't Barry going to reduce some of this?

To the person who asks "When will the media do their jobs..."

Which media? You obviously seem to be happy with your own "personal" news source that reinforces your preconceived notions...What isn't being reported?

To the person on the other end of the spectrum also chides the same "media", (or perhaps you are both critiquing the other's personalized news? It is often hard to tell as both sides now attack the media whenever they see a news item that they disagree with.)

Is it the media, and the Republicans, the Republican media, or just the media in general and Republicans in toto?

It's comforting to know that this mutual media hate-fest is at least one thing both sides seem to share...

Somewhere down the line, you have to start showing some INTEGRITY and Leadership if you want to be a sucessfull President! The hypocrisy of the Republicans never ceases to amaze me. First the way they have responded to the Benghazi incident. This was a tragedy; 4 Americans were killed. I agree that everything should be done to find out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again. However, throughout history, Americans have died in far away places doing what our government has asked of them. It is a fact. It has happened under Republican and Democrat administrations. Secondly, the response to Ambassador Rice and her actions are uncalled for. McCain and Graham all but said she was either incompetent or untrustworthy. How quickly these two have forgotten the debacle of SOS Condoleeza Rice; she was the mouthpiece for Bush/Cheney selling the WMDs and the Iraq conflict. Why was it acceptable for her to go on all the talk shows and convey those messages, but not acceptable for Ambassador Rice to convey the intelligence that she had been provided regarding the Benghazi incident? It is time for the Republicans to step back and let our agencies do their jobs to find out what happened. But as usual, they would rather start with the hate-filled rhetoric and point fingers without knowing all the facts.

I am so thankful that President Obama is our president. We should all be thankful that as Americans we live in the greatest country in the world.

The republicans couldn't defeat the president as they vowed to do, so now they will try to do the next best thing. They will try to tarnish him in some way. Mark my words, this will go on for the next four years.

The republicans are not good losers. They are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One day they will talk a good game, but the next day they will do an about face. Trying to stay relevant; McCain has turned into the main attack dog. He has turned against every program that he has supported in the past.
