Business executives who met with Barack Obama Wednesday to discuss the fiscal cliff said the president was receptive to their suggestions but said the onus remained on Congress to avoid not going over the cliff.
Xerox CEO Ursula M. Burns said the meeting was “very constructive, very positive” but that the leaders “didn’t get into too many specifics.” She said they would stand by if the president required their public advocacy.
“We were very clear that if we could help him to get to a solution we are absolutely behind him because going over the cliff is not something that any of us in the room could live with,” Burns said.
The meeting occurred a day after President Obama met with labor leaders, who came away saying the president assured them that he would only accept a deal that raised rates on the wealthy and kept them low for middle-class Americans. Those leaders, including the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka, seemed more committed to staging a public relations campaign over the tax rates than the CEOs did.
On the whole, the CEOs seemed satisfied that their voices would be heard in this round of negotiations; a source familiar with the 80-minute discussion inside the Roosevelt Room said the White House expressed more of a commitment to keep business leaders involved with the fiscal talks than they did during the 2011 talks, but did not elaborate on how that communication would occur.
Honeywell CEO David Cote praised the president for being engaged, telling CNBC in an interview that talking to him was “not just a case of talking to somebody who’s doing his Blackberry at the same time,” but added that he is still concerned that Congress could get a deal before the end-of-year combination of spending cuts and tax increases kicks in.
“I am not convinced we won’t go off the fiscal cliff. Because that requires two sides to agree, so I’m not convinced of that,” Cote told NBC after his interview.
Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke issued a statement after the meeting, warning of the damage Congress would do to consumer confidence if they weren’t able to reach a compromise.
“Wal-Mart moms tell us their confidence in the economy is shaped by whether they believe Washington is working for them. If the White House and Congress can reach agreement, it will show them the nation’s leaders can address big issues, and it will help raise their confidence in their government and their future.”
Earlier in the day, some of the CEOs previewed what they would recommend to the president when they met with him.
“We support ‘loophole closers’ but only in the context of broadening the income tax base while lowering rates and moving to a competitive territorial system like most of the rest of the world,” Proctor and Gamble spokesman Paul Fox said in a statement Tuesday evening. P&G’s CEO Robert McDonald also attended Wednesday’s meeting.
The Campaign to Fix the Debt, a group founded by former Fiscal Commission chairs Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, some of whose CEO Council members were in the meeting, also indicated what they would ask for in a statement released last week.
“Any plan to address our debt must replace the abrupt fiscal cliff with a gradual and intelligent plan to reduce spending, make structural entitlement reforms, and enact comprehensive tax reform which cuts tax preferences in order to lower rates and reduce deficits,” the group said in response to Obama’s inviting business leaders to the White House last Friday.

They are truly patriotic Americans; unlike the GOP/Tea Potty. Those baggers and the greedy ole white male politicans (wholly owned sock puppets) need to take off those red, white and blue blinders. When they do they'll see their brand and party is dwindling.
lean>>> FORWARD
Most CEOs have common sense..except..of course...Citizen Bain...
actually..now regarding the fiscal cliff..the ball is in the GOP court..I think the President has just lent a ball to the ball-less GOP ..Speaker Boehner has no ball (no pun intended)...the elephant has been castrated by election results...it takes time to grow some ball back...
.
FORWARD...
The TPGOP would do well to listen to the people that write big checks to their superpacs. Who will rule the day, common sense or Grover?
Does Grover even have a job? Does he even pay taxes? Who elected him as the boss of the TPGOP anyway?
Who will rule the day, common sense or Grover?
Piggy-
Common sense always prevails.....
BTW Piggy, I took your advice and got a new Avatar. How do you like it?

Let Odumbo and the unions take us over the cliff. Then you will pay dearly for reelecting that commie pos.
The three stooges everyone. Aren't they great.
Mrs piggy, you're always good for a laugh... thx
Yeah, Romney shoulda been the prezident so he coulda ejucate you commies
It's not the GOP ruining this country it is the Unions.
We all need to succeed from this @!$%#ry
Wilman and Rob99- I'm assuming that was satire. If so, it was perfect!
Foodchain, when was the last time you had paid time off, safe working conditions, and were paid over-time? Did Unions ruin unsafe working conditions and penny per hour wages for you?
Get over it, folks. The election is over. No matter which side of the coin you're on, if the coin can't stand up on end it will fall. Demand that your Party's leaders find common ground with the other.
By all means go...we neither need or want you. Try going someplace else. France just raised taxes on the wealthy, perhaps if you are one of them, they'll take you.
But probably not, since they are a democratic country.
Perhaps Somalia might want you. Check them out.
Many of these same CEOs that are now asking our elected leaders to solve problems and comprimise are the same CEOs who supported the elected officials who have fought tax increases of any kind in the recent past. Maybe they've finally realized the future of this nation and the companies they run are now at risk, but is it too late?
Unions add not one dime of value to the consumer,
Fair wages, safe working conditions, overtime etc have all been legislated and will not be going away.
I have always been a supporter of Made in USA, have never bought a foreign car and was the very last to give in on foreign clothes. I am however not going to continue supporting union workers that take my money to support democrats.
I am truly sorry but I have had enough
Hey ... GT-2021701 who writes (#1.3):
LMAO...that's my reaction after looking at your new avatar...
butt.. I still recommend that you need to keep your ass ... in case of emergency - when you need your ass to fall onto..say..when skiing
Keep buying IMPORTS and destroy the economy some more.
Judging from another article about the lack of bipartisanship already in the Senate, I'd say the fiscal cliff is a certainty. Avoiding it is not an option in this climate.
The cut in tax rates is primarily of interest to the wealthy (those percentage point differences on a typical income do not amount to much). They wants to lower rates but also to broaden the tax base. The saving grace of the poor is their large numbers. What each may be able to pay is next to nothing, but in aggregate the total represents a tidy savings, when split among the few wealthy (an amount the wealthy would not have to pay in taxes).
In 2007, the Adjusted Gross Income of the bottom 50% was $1,078 billion!
If we took 30%, they would contribute $323 billion. Divided by the 141,000 taxpayers in the top .1%, that is $2.3 million each!
What is that code for?
Forget the wealthy! Whatever the rates on wage earners, the wealthy more likely pay something around 15%.
Here's something posted by Ron Brock on another thread:
The wealthy are citizens of the globe: their business interests span national boundaries. Their wealth is distributed in accounts from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland. We should not rely on them to participate in our recovery efforts at home. We need to do it ourselves.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Old Fat Guy,
I understand you may feel that way, but I disagree completely. Would you prefer to drive on overpasses and bridges built by union members that have to go through a few years in an apprenticeship to learn their craft or the bridge built by the cheapest subcontractor a company can find?
Do you want your walls plastered, your roof re-shingled, or your foundation fixed by a union worker with 20 years experience that makes a decent living or the guys the general contractor pulls in off the street?
Union workers provide value to customers. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the whole concept of workers' unions for you...
The wealthy elites who fund and control the Tea Parties will not allow the Fiscal Cliff and debt ceiling extension (also upcoming) to derail the economy. Their present commitment to Mutually Assured Destruction is just posturing. If Democrats hold their ground the GOPTP will blink...that is fact.
It's amazing how many posters on this thread make over $250,000 a year! And, you'd be taxed a higher amount only on income above that limit. I'm surrounded by millionaires!
I wouldn't sing them praises yet! Businesses like Walmart are part of the problem. They refuse to pay a living wage and the rest of us have to subsidize their work force all the while CEO Duke and the Walton family write themselves huge checks. If we are to make progress companies that do not pay living wages must be penalized in the tax code. Much like companies that send assets and jobs overseas must be penalized. Make it NOT profitable to do so. They should be patriotic enough to figure this out themselves but the wealthy seldom are patriots.

@!$%#in Moron
Sweetie, you got it all wrong.
We used our hands to pick one the greatest President in my life time since JKF & LBJ. President Obama is also historic not only in being the 1st African American President; but also to be re-elected since FDR even with 7.9% joblessness and over 50% of the vote. President Obama is the 4th prez in history to do that
If you must talk about freebies, then you must consider corporate whores like Mitt Romney with their hands out and his ilk.
So now who is the moron; racist? Learn something.
So Obama invited all his campaign contributors to the white house... big @!$%#ing deal.
Nice Bev I with you on that!
The word you're looking for is SECEDE.
Go. And take your lunatic friends with you.
I don't think that obama would know a job if he met one on the street. I remember when he focused like a laser, couldn't find any then. How many years ago, was that?
Liberals are so selfish ("what's in it for me")! Those who support the Republicans don't do it because it benefits them; they do it on principle; because it is the right and moral thing to do (selfless patriotism). The 1% carry a disproportionate burden of those who work for them, providing them with healthcare and retirement, all in exchange for making a measly profit from their labors. No wonder they prefer hiring labor in a communist country like China (where healthcare and retirement are the government's problem)!
Texas Instruments is laying off 1,700, how many more, if Hostess Foods takes bankruptcy, the day after tomorrow?
Hurrah - CEO's for America!
Now maybe we can get something done.
I looked it up for you, 18,000. And hey, the deadline is 4 pm, tomorrow Texas time.

I reckon since the election is over some honest numbers will be forthcoming. Hold your breath!
When millions lost their IRAs and millions lost their homes with all the equity and down payments they used to purchase that home, who got the money? Of course it was the already rich on Wall Street and other banks across the nation. The money trail led to the upper 2% of the nation who are now asked to pay a little more in taxes. Grover Norquist should be banned from Capital Hill and his no-tax pledge signed by the entire Republican Party in Congress be burned on national TV to ensure constituents that no lobbyist will be allowed to take an entire political party hostage ever again!
Obama economic policy is harshly anti-business and CEO's hate his guts but they aren't stupid enough to tell the Prez they think he's an amatuer, needs to quite buying votes and must cut spending... obviously too much risk!
Nice photo op ceo's - bite your tongue and go back to sitting on all that cash you were ready to dump into growing business if the Mormon business man had won! Reassign employees to part time - beg for a deferrment from obamacare and cut costs further. Voters haven't experienced enough pain yet and four years isn't that long really.
Did you read the article? “We support ‘loophole closers’ but only in the context of broadening the income tax base while lowering rates and moving to a competitive territorial system like most of the rest of the world,”
In plain English. Broadening the income tax base = making the 47% that do not pay taxes PAY some federal income tax. While lowering rates = less taxes on the rich. Moving to a competitive territorial system = let them move more jobs overseas and pay no/less in tariffs. Only if we export more then we import does a competitive territorial system help the U.S. out. WHICH IS NOT THE CASE. We import way more then we export.
“Any plan to address our debt must replace the abrupt fiscal cliff with a gradual and intelligent plan to reduce spending, make structural entitlement reforms, and enact comprehensive tax reform which cuts tax preferences in order to lower rates and reduce deficits,”
Reduce spending = the SAME cuts that are coming with the "fiscal" cliff...morons. Make structural entitlement reforms = cut social services like Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, etc. Programs that people actually need since they only make 1/1000 of what someone else makes. Lower rates and reduce deficits = MORONS that do not know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. How can you lower rates and revenue and reduce the deficit at the same time? That would violate basic math. They think by using "big" words that they will confuse most people since it sounds "good". They will trick some morons, but many of us are not as dumb as they hope we are.
While I agree that the 47% should pay something the ISSUE is they do not make enough versus what the top couple percent do. IF THEY MADE MORE THEY COULD AFFORD TO PAY TAXES. PAY THEM MORE AND YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES OR MIDDLE MAN FEES. Without the threat of high taxes that force an owner/CEO to have to choose between paying the government with middle man fess, or paying their workers more, THEY WILL CHOOSE TO REWARD THEMSELVES INSTEAD OVER AND OVER AGAIN. They get rewarded by paying their workers the LEAST amount possible while paying themselves the MOST.
Had the top tax rate been higher over the past 50 years we would not be painted into this corner. You are the morons that are supposed to be money experts, but you fail at basic engineering, systems, and math. The only thing you know is how to be selfish and greedy more then likely. How to get ahead of the other 95%, instead of trying to work with others you prey on them instead.
I do not want a handout I want 1/10 instead of 1/100 or 1/1000. I could be asking for 50/50 like your wife/husband so STFU. When I get paid 1/10 then I can afford to pay some taxes and do not need government services. Thankfully I have heard about some companies/CEOs that are actually giving out raises, always cheaper/better to cut out the middle man.
I wonder why China has done so well for so long? Tariffs, they should be high enough to provide some local protection, but still allow for a better/more advanced products to compete and be sold. If it is a good idea that helps out humanity why be greedy with it? The greater good is in helping the masses and not yourself. If everyone did the same and shared we would grow faster instead of saying "MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE" like a bunch of seagulls. As long as you can feed yourself, put a roof over your head, afford the basic stuff, doctor bills, etc. life is good.
If you took every penny form the top 1%, it wouldn't last obama for a month? Did you know that there is only somewhere around 8 or 9 trillion dollars in existence in the entire world? Enough to pay off about one half our national debt. Do you understand why I want to secede?
Capt. Smash
Nice Bev I with you on that!
Capt. Smash, Thanks
I just can't let morons like him spew racist garbage about my people and President. It's very hurtful. He /she needs to post over @ FUX NOOSE where those types of idiotic comments are encouraged.
I really wish the FCC would starve that beast called FOX NEWS. FOX NEWS is an insult to rabid dogs.
Probably not, because that is, oh my goodness, Grade School math.
Oh well, you got what you voted for, and in fairness to you, romney would not have been any better.
Ron Paul gave a farewell address today, the day that freedom died.
The CEOs were asking the President how much more can we flood the USA with made in CHINA products to bring America down. To keep many Americans unemployed. The Government mabey has not figured out that the more people out of work the less paid into social security, and federal taxes no wonder the government is going broke it can,t keep it's own tax payers working, keep the Imports flooding in. It makes me sick
Obuma needs more help than the CEO's can give him. His bully tactics and hiding stuff like the fact his chosen people are doing stupid things and he appears to be helping hide it. Obuma should have gotten out of office before his feet were put to the fire for his screw ups he can't bully his way out of the fact he FAILED TO LEAD. And for those who wish to label me go for it shows your immaturity; all of the name calling and division is destroying this country we need a real leader, but don't feel Romney was the answer either!!!
My wife pointed out to me that I have become so negative of late, with all the negative adds and all the fighting in here. The Election is over, Now we have all these people that want to leave the Union. I live in Mich. I want to find the dumb ass that has started a petition here and kick his butt. I would say to all the haters that its is time to put up or be quite. If you don't like it here in the USA, then pack up and leave. Its easy to be part of the problem, but it is hard to set down and work these problems out. People have to check there Ego's at the door. It is High time to put our country first. Not big business, not unions, but the Country. Because if we do not put country first, nothing else matters. I think big business knows they have to do there part, The Unions know they have to do there part, We the people need to do our part also. The first thing we need to do for this country is to stop Rush, Hanady, Beck, and any Dem that are selling hate for there greed. Because that is all these that I have named and others as well are doing just that. Does anyone in the world think that Rush loves this country, I sure don't, same with Beck, are Hanady, and all the others like them on both sides, They are in it just to line there pockets. It is time we American's no matter what color we are, No matter where we are from, we all live here now. It is up to us to make this Great Country All it can be. We all have to work together. The Ceo's and Unions have to work for the good of the company. These CEo's getting filthy rich while the working people need Walfare to live. That just isn't right. Leadership starts at the top. So if CEO's are only thinking of their self's, that is not leadership. When they lead and put the company first everyone wins. Leading means working things out with Unions. What kind of a man would let his workers, work in un safe conditions. That Massey coal mine comes to mind for me. What kind a man is he. He didn't care how many of his men died, all he cares about is getting that coal out and making his money. Nor does he care what burning coal dose to the climate. We should be going to wind, solar, Geo and other energy's. Find ways to burn coal clean. Yes it is going to cost more in the short term. I would tell coal company's, Wouldn't you be smart to find ways to burn coal cleaner then to burn none at all? There would still be plenty of money to be made and we all would win. That is really the thing in a nut shell. WE WOULD ALL WIN. Leadership is finding a way that we can all win. We all need to find a way that is a Win Win for all of us. There is really enough to go around. How many homes does one man need? How many cars? How much money is enough? God has blessed so many with so much, Wouldn't it be the right thing to do by giving some of that back to help those that haven't been so blessed? We all know that is what Jesus would have asked of us all. All these people claiming to be Christians yet wouldn't turn a hand to help those in need. We let out Vet's live in the streets. We could have done things to stop the banks from foreclosing on all of these homes when this mess got started. I mean it was out tax dollars they were loaning anyways wan't it? YES, Banks sold those loans to the Government ie Freddie and Fannie Mac. The Win Win would have to let those that could stay in there homes, Get through these bad times and then when jobs came back and things got going again, re do the loans and get things back on track. I mean really, how much of our tax dollars went to the banks that caused the mess anyways. Once Greed stop's ruling everything and all people start doing the right thing again, this country will be greater then it ever was and we can live in peace with out war all the time. Really what starts most wars anyways. Greed. We can settle the mess in the middle east when we don't need all that Oil. Win Win Win...
It looks like the Turdblossom brigade is out in force again! Karl Marx Rove must still have enough to pay his minimum wage trolls.
Like the 750,000 per month that were losing their jobs when we were under GOPer control? There will be companies that will need to adjust their work force as the market adjusts. When the middle class gets back on their feet and starts earning and spending again, these companies if they are worth their "grain of salt" will survive and rehire. The middle class needs to rebound after the thirty years of "trickle down" voodoo economics assault that was forced down their throats by the GOPers.
Ah beverly, how can you? PEW found that FOX news was the least biased, most reliable of all the media. You could look it up, if you had any interest in the truth.
My my holyhandgernade, you must be drinking from beverly's well, the democrats took over both houses of congress at that time, as you well know. If you don't you could look it up.
The pressure's on! It's crunch time. We'll see if the majority of voters were right or wrong soon enough...
I almost blew my beverage out my nose over this post. The best joke I have seen all day!
Ha ha ha, well ProFreedom, I am an old man and in my long life I have found that the majority is normally wrong. That just the way it is.
Well holyhandergrenade, as I said, you can look it up, then we will see who is honest and who is not.
As we used to say when we were kids, "I double dog dare you!"
The country should go over the fiscal cliff. In fact we should make it a bigger cliff. But the rich CEO's don't want that because they won't make as many millions as they normally would. They just want the government to keep spending borrowed money to inflate the economy and help boost the profits of the companies these CEO's run. They are not patriotic. They are looking out for themselves and their company's profits.
THE TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN BEER
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this.
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!" "That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction and they can go and drink their beer somewhere else.

The economy was already headed into the crapper before the Dems took over. If you don't believe me, look it up. "I double dog dare you!"
Whaaaaat ? Trumpka used the FRONT DOOR to the White House instead of sneaking through the BACK DOOR ?
Yep, Mr. Obama is getting his "ducks in a row" to make sure he helps the UNIONS during his LAST FOUR YEARS in office.
Back to the article: MORE Class Warfare from this administration. Next on the agenda for Mr. Obama is to go around the country again on a campaign tour to get public opinion on his Class Warfare tactic. Expect this whirlwind tour to start next Monday.
stc1993....
Those folks must have been drinking OBAMA BEER which I understand from the grapevine that it goes well with Carter peanuts.
Well gt, the fellow said 750,000 per month, lets have you look it up and prove your point. As I remember, un-employment was around 5%, when the dems took over. If you can, I will admit it. But not tonight, I am off to bed.
I'd sure as heck like to see the finances of all the pundits out there that decry the "wealthy" who the @#@$@ is "wealthy" ??!!! WEALTHY?? gimme a break
"Galbraith: The danger posed by the deficit 'is zero'"
From Ezra Klein, Washington Post
Interview with economist James K. Galbraith
May, 2010
[Wikipedia: Galbraith is a son of the renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith and Catherine (Kitty) Atwater Galbraith and is the brother of the former diplomat and commentator Peter W. Galbraith. He earned his BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard in 1974 and Ph.D from Yale in 1981, both in economics. From 1974 to 1975, Galbraith studied as a Marshall Scholar at King's College, Cambridge.[1]
From 1981 to 1982, Galbraith served on the staff of the Congress of the United States, eventually as Executive Director of the Joint Economic Committee.[1] In 1985, he was a guest scholar at the brookings institution.]
Galbraith: The danger posed by the deficit 'is zero'
James Galbraith is an economist and the Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. chair in government and business relations at the University of Texas at Austin. He's also a skeptic of the prevailing concern over America's long-term deficit. With many people now comparing America's fiscal condition to Greece, I spoke with Galbraith to get the other side of the argument. An edited transcript of our conversation follows.
EK: You think the danger posed by the long-term deficit is overstated by most economists and economic commentators.
JG: No, I think the danger is zero. It's not overstated. It's completely misstated.
EK: Why?
JG: What is the nature of the danger? The only possible answer is that this larger deficit would cause a rise in the interest rate. Well, if the markets thought that was a serious risk, the rate on 20-year treasury bonds wouldn't be 4 percent and change now. If the markets thought that the interest rate would be forced up by funding difficulties 10 year from now, it would show up in the 20-year rate. That rate has actually been coming down in the wake of the European crisis.
So there are two possibilities here. One is the theory is wrong. The other is that the market isn't rational. And if the market isn't rational, there's no point in designing policy to accommodate the markets because you can't accommodate an irrational entity.
EK: Then why are the bulk of your colleagues so worried about this?
JG: Let's push a bit deeper on the CBO forecasts. They publish a baseline set of projections. One of those projections holds the economy will return to a normal high-employment level with low inflation over the next 10 years. If true, that would be wonderful news. Go down a few lines and they also have the short-term interest rate going up to 5 percent. It's that short-term interest rate combined with that low inflation rate that allows them to generate, quite mechanically, these enormous future deficit forecasts. And those forecasts are driven partially by the assumption that health-care costs will rise forever at a faster rate than everything else and by interest payments on the debt will hit 20 or 25 percent of GDP.
At this point, the whole thing is completely incoherent. You cannot write checks to 20 percent to anybody without that money entering the economy and increasing employment and inflation. And if it does that, then debt-to-GDP has to be lower, because inflation figures into how much debt we have. These numbers need to come together in a coherent story, and the CBO's forecast does not give us a coherent story. So everything that is said that is based on the CBO's baseline is, strictly speaking, nonsense.
EK: But couldn't there be a space between the CBO being totally correct and the debt not being a problem? It seems certain, for instance, that health-care costs will continue to rise faster than other sectors of the economy.
JG: No, it's not reasonable. Share of health-care cost would rise as part of total GDP and the inflation would rise to be nearer to what the rate of health-care inflation is. And if health care does get that expensive, and we're paying 30 percent of GDP while everyone else is paying 12 percent, we could buy Paris and all the doctors and just move our elderly there.
EK: But putting inflation aside, the gap between spending and revenues won't have other ill effects?
JG: Is there any terrible consequence because we haven't prefunded the defense budget? No. There's only one budget and one borrowing authority and all that matters is what that authority pays. Say I'm the federal government and I wish to pay you, Ezra Klein, a billion dollars to build an aircraft carrier. I put money in your bank account for that. Did the Federal Reserve look into that? Did the IRS sign off on it? Government does not need money to spend just as a bowling alley does not run out of points.
What people worry about is that the federal government won't be able to sell bonds. But there can never be a problem for the federal government selling bonds. It goes the other way. The government's spending creates the bank's demand for bonds, because they want a higher return on the money that the government is putting into the economy. My father said this process is so simple that the mind recoils from it.
EK: What are the policy implications of this view?
JG: It says that we should be focusing on real problems and not fake ones. We have serious problems. Unemployment is at 10 percent. if we got busy and worked out things for the unemployed to do, we'd be much better off. And we can certainly afford it. We have an impending energy crisis and a climate crisis. We could spend a generation fixing those problems in a way that would rebuild our country, too. On the tax side, what you want to do is reverse the burden on working people. Since the beginning of the crisis, I've supported a payroll tax holiday so everyone gets an increase in their after-tax earnings so they can pay down their mortgages, which would be a good thing. You also want to encourage rich people to recycle their money, which is why I support the estate tax, which has accounted for an enormous number of our great universities and nonprofits and philanthropic organizations. That's one difference between us and Europe.
EK: That does it for my questions, I think.
JG: I have one more answer, though! Since the 1790s, how often has the federal government not run a deficit? Six short periods, all leading to recession. Why? Because the government needs to run a deficit, it's the only way to inject financial resources into the economy. If you're not running a deficit, it's draining the pockets of the private sector. I was at a meeting in Cambridge last month where the managing director of the IMF said he was against deficits but in favor of saving, but they're exactly the same thing! A government deficit means more money in private pockets.
The way people suggest they can cut spending without cutting activity is completely fallacious. This is appalling in Europe right now. The Greeks are being asked to cut 10 percent from spending in a few years. And the assumption is that this won't affect GDP. But of course it will! It will cut at least 10 percent! And so they won't have the tax collections to fund the new lower level of spending. Spain was forced to make the same announcement yesterday. So the Eurozone is going down the tubes.
On the other hand, look at Japan. They've had enormous deficits ever since the crash in 1988. What's been the interest rate on government bonds ever since? It's zero! They've had no problem funding themselves. The best asset to own in Japan is cash, because the price level is falling. It gets you 4 percent return. The idea that funding difficulties are driven by deficits is an argument backed by a very powerful metaphor, but not much in the way of fact, theory or current experience.

Leaked “grand bargain” document details Obama's plan for cuts in entitlement programs
By Barry Grey
15 November 2012
In his first post-election press conference, President Barack Obama on Wednesday reiterated the claim that his focus in deficit-reduction talks with the Republicans is to provide jobs and help the struggling “middle class” recover from the economic crisis.
To this end, Obama declared, he is determined to reach a “balanced” compromise that will require the wealthy to “pay a little bit more.” In practical terms, that means, at most, slightly raising the income tax rates of the richest 2 percent of US households—those making more than $250,000 a year—by allowing the Bush-era tax cuts for this income group to expire on January 1st.
Obama spoke, as always in the vaguest terms, of the need to “reform” Medicare and other social entitlements. He made no mention of the scheduled expiration at the new year of federally funded extended unemployment benefits, a cruel cost-cutting measure that will, if implemented, deprive over 2 million jobless workers of cash assistance.
The real social and class interests served by the administration's fiscal policy were indicated by the next item on the president's calendar—a closed-door White House meeting with the CEOs of 12 of the biggest US corporations, including General Electric, Walmart, American Express, Honeywell, Ford, IBM, Pepsico and Chevron. This gathering of multi-millionaires was convened to ensure that the demands of the corporate elite for drastic cuts in social spending and further tax cuts for big business would be carried out.
Obama's pretense of “fairness” and concern for working people, against the backdrop of the supposed looming disaster of the “fiscal cliff,” is a cynical sham. It is a cover for a calculated and ruthless assault on all that remains of the social reforms of the 20th century—most centrally, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security—combined with a restructuring of the tax system that will cut taxes for corporations and the rich and increase the tax burden on working people.
The far-reaching and reactionary substance of Obama's social policy emerges very clearly in secret documents that were leaked last weekend relating to negotiations in the summer of 2011 between the White House and Republican House Speaker John Boehner over raising the US debt limit. In response to Republican demands for massive spending cuts in return for an agreement on raising the debt limit, Obama proposed a “grand bargain” to slash the federal deficit by $4 trillion over ten years through a combination of cuts in social programs and increased revenues from “comprehensive tax reform.”
Obama proposed more than $2 in cuts for every $1 dollar in revenue increases ($2.8 trillion in cuts, $1.2 trillion in increased tax revenues). However, the talks broke down due to opposition to any tax increases among House Republicans.
This led to the deal to raise the debt limit that set the stage for the more than $700 billion in automatic across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases, beginning January 1, 2013, that are a major component of the so-called “fiscal cliff.” (See: “What is the fiscal cliff”?).
Speaking on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” program last Sunday, Washington Post investigative journalist and associate editor Bob Woodward announced that he had obtained a copy of the secret final offer from Obama to Boehner for a “grand bargain” on austerity and tax “reform.” NBC posted a portion of the document on the “Meet the Press” web site.
Regarding the document, Woodward said, “But what it shows is a willingness to cut all kinds of things, like TRICARE, which is the sacred health insurance program for the military, for military retirees; to cut Social Security; to cut Medicare. And there are some lines in there about, ‘We want to get tax rates down, not only for individuals, but for businesses.’ So Obama and the White House were willing to go quite far.”
In fact, the document, dated July 19, 2011, spells out an unprecedented assault on social welfare programs and a pro-corporate revamping of the tax system that would have been politically unthinkable for Republican presidents from Reagan to George W. Bush.
On Medicare, the document proposed reducing spending by “at least $250 billion” from 2012 to 2021 and “at least $800 billion” from 2022 to 2031. This would be achieved, in part, by “alteration of the eligibility age for Medicare” and “adjustments to premiums collected for services and benefits currently covered under Part B and Part D.” In other words, the eligibility age for Medicare health coverage would be raised and premiums for a range of hospital and clinical services as well as for drugs would be hiked.
On Social Security, the document proposed changing the formula for the consumer price index (CPI) as applied to cost-of-living increases in benefits so as to slash outlays by $112 billion over 10 years. The new CPI would also apply to veterans' disability payments, cutting $24 billion.
The proposal further stipulated: “Reduce the 75-year estimated shortfall of the Social Security program by 0.7 percent… as a percentage of taxable payroll, with a balanced package of tax and benefit changes.” In plain English: increase payroll taxes and decrease benefits.
In addition to these sweeping cuts in the two most basic entitlement programs, the document spelled out a list of additional reductions, including:
* Civilian retirement, i.e., retirement benefits for civilian federal workers: $33 billion
* Military retirement: $11 billion
* TRICARE drug copayments/TRICARE for Life: $16 billion
* Postal reform: $16 billion
* Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation: $9 billion
* Flood insurance: $4 billion
* Agriculture subsidies/conservation programs: $33 billion
* Nutrition assistance: $2 billion
* Higher education: $10 billion.
On the tax side, the document proposed to “Enact reform that improves international competitiveness and increases incentives for companies to invest in the United States and succeed globally.” This is an open-ended formula for cutting business taxes and increasing profits through the decimation of social programs and the further impoverishment of the working class.
The document specifically endorsed cutting both corporate tax rates and individual income tax rates for the wealthy, with the injunction to “Reduce the number of individual and corporate income tax rates… reducing each rate to the lowest possible level consistent with the overall revenue target…”
This “get richer, quicker” scheme for the American ruling class, whether or not it is enacted in precisely the form outlined by the White House in July 2011, remains the basic agenda of Obama and the Democratic Party. This was underscored by William Daley, a former top executive at JPMorgan Chase who was White House chief of staff in the summer of 2011 and led the negotiations with Boehner and the Republicans.
Last week, Daley told Bloomberg News that there was “80 to 85 percent” agreement between Obama and Boehner at the time and that the “grand bargain” offer should serve as the starting point for new talks on deficit reduction. “It’s logical that that’s where you'd go back to, the points where there was either agreement or close to an agreement, and try to begin there,” Daley said.

It's all on the Republicans this time. Unlike 2011, this time, we the people are paying attention. We're familiar with the President's and the Democrats' stance, we gave them the go-ahead with a resounding popular-vote victory on all fronts, and we've rejected the obstructionist GOP modus operandi.
Plus, poll after poll shows that we want tax cuts for the rich to expire. It's not that we're willing to consider it, it's that we want it to happen. An article came out today on Gallup's Web site explaining that Americans' opinions on how the fiscal cliff should be solved have shifted from favoring an approach that focuses on spending cuts (with minor or nonexistent tax increases) to favoring a balanced approach that gives equal weight to increasing revenues and decreasing spending. All in all, less than 35% of Americans today think that revenue increases should be a non-priority.
Most importantly, the GOP is in no shape to fight this one to the death. Eighteen months ago, they had just come out of an incredibly strong midterm election (one of the most decisive in history), Obama's approval ratings stood at 40%, and they were about to start the process of choosing a presidential nominee, with the advantage of there not being a similar process being simultaneously conducted by the Democratic party. It was all about them. Not the case today. They have been rebuffed by the American people. Their top dogs are all too aware that the "Block Obama. Destroy Country. Blame him. Repeat. Profit." strategy has backfired. Obama was reelected and enjoys a 53% approval rating, while Congress is suffering from its lowest approval rating in history. They're just in no shape to stomach another PR debacle in the name of pleasing their own extremist fringe. If they want another shot at governing the country, they will need to move to the center, and immigration reform alone will not cut it.
That article by Ezra Klein is very silly. If deficits do not matter then why does the government only spend a few trillion dollars a year? Why not just add trillions more onto the deficit? The government could just bailout everyone. Let's just eliminate the debt ceiling altogether.
I thought the whole Carter thing would go away after the reelection, but, evidently, I underestimated the power of The Bubble.
Need I show you the electoral map of the 1980 presidential election again? Hint, hint -- it does not look like this:

It does make sense to equalize tax rates in this modern economy, but for those who say lowering rates cannot equal an increase in revenue only expose their lack of education. Kennedy lowered rates, revenues went up. Reagan lowered rates. revenues went up.
What we actually need is less government, especially at the federal level, as they add monstrous levels of waste, fraud and abuse, while providing little. We need lower rates for all, except for those who pay nothing. We should however not ask the poor to contribute, as they do already through gas taxes, sales taxes, and a myriad of other taxes. There is something decent about making sure people can survive before contributing. But once that threshold is met, everyone else should be in at 5%, 10%, and once you are making decent money, maybe as high as 20%. Take away all deductions - every last one of them. We all pay, we can all figure out tax liability on a napkin.
Do this and watch the economy grow. Keep the control in DC by using endless tax code to complicate and manipulate, and we will never work our way out of this mess.
It sounds like bev and capt smash can't stand to hear the truth as someone else sees it, only the way their blinded demlib eyes do. When Bozobama fails for another four years, leaves black unemployment around 25-30%, but certainly hands them pennies, how will the folks feel the? And his socialist crap WILL fail, no doubt.
Which guy do you like best, the one who will turn this country into Mexico or the one who wants to increase our already tremendous wealth gap, by sending even more American jobs to China while the middle class falls through the hole? Those were the options we were given in this election. No wonder the country was so divided.
America currently has a record number of millionaires and billionaires, along with our record unemployment. CEOs made 42 times what the average American worker made in the 1980s. Today, CEOs make 343 times what the average American worker makes. Our national debt grew from billions to trillions under Reagan, with his "trickle down economics" (which Bush Sr. derisively called "voodoo economics"), and the debt doubled from $5 trillion to $10 trillion under Bush, because he funded 2 wars while giving everybody tax breaks. Republicans always vote for the guy who promises tax breaks, and their candidate always does this by borrowing from other countries, causing the national debt to explode. Republican economics is the equaivalent of taking out credit cards in your children's names and expecting them to pay off your debts. Even if trickle down theory worked, the new jobs are currently being created overseas, not here.
We also naturalize more immigrants as citizens each year than all other nations of the world COMBINED, the vast majority of them from Mexico. 1 in 8 Americans is now foreign born, and 1 in 10 people born in Mexico currently lives in America. We have tripled our number of immigrants since Bush's 1990 Immigration Act, each year setting, and then breaking, a new historic record for the number of immigrants we take in. You guys keep arguing over which poison is better.

Has anyone ever noticed that no matter what business is always tries to come of as concillitory or supportive?
Gee, I can't figure out why.
There would be no "fiscal" cliff if;
-Congress could pass a balanced budget.
-could say no to more spending of any kind.
-quit promising more than can realistically ever be achieved.
The largest expansion of government was Johnsons Great society. It was supposed to eliminate poverty. Today, It and subsequent social spendings has grown to consume the largest part of our dollars.
And poverty today is greater than before the passage of the laws.
Insanity is trying to do the same thing (and more) again and again, and again.
9 out of 10 of these CEOs are there for their own personal press and ego. Anybody who thinks otherwise is seriously delusional.

@Gil - get over it and get used it. Tea baggers lost.
don't know if you are aware of the fact that lyndon baines johnson took our social security money, get this,he borrowed against it,to have my brothers go to an early grave and make the chickenhawks millionaires,i was reading post 1.56 and now i know why farmers are repubs.they the president, want to cut 33 billion from that part of cuts,i'm a dem.but this cut plan will make it hard to sweep in,in 2016 it looks like you give repubs the edge for prez.however democrats are chomping at the bit,so to speak,to throw out the rest of the pharohs in 2014.can't wait.
All this talk of union busting and decreasing American wages is stupid! Let us not forget the lessons of Henry ford.
In 1914, Henry Ford started an industrial revolution by more than doubling wages to $5 a day—a move that helped build the U.S. middle class and the modern economy. Henry Ford had reasoned that since it was now possible to build inexpensive cars in volume, more of them could be sold if employees could afford to buy them. The $5 day helped better the lot of all American workers and contributed to the emergence of the American middle class. By the 1920's Ford was the largest automaker and employed more than 100,00 people in one plant!
The simple question is, if you pay your workers starvation wages who do you expect to buy any products you produce?
The equation only works today because the market for all the Chinese goods made by workers that are paid piss-poor wages is not China! Most of those goods are sold somewhere else, where workers make a wage good enough to buy those products.
PJ: I am not a "Tea bagger". I'm an Independent. If you don't have anything to say, then don't try to make it look like you are saying something! Obama does it all the time. His press conference yesterday was a joke.
you may not be a tea snagger and may be an indie.but i smell racism in the post, give it up dude 4more44,that like death is reality.

So quit whining and start packing! GO!
America: love it or leave it.
Good luck, and don't come back.
That's an excellent question, EEngineer.
Conservatives fail to understand or refuse to see how we are all inter-related in this economy. When the middle class wage earner is paid more he can spend more, and thus the factory owners/ store owners make more money. Everybody wins.
When the middle class is starved through unemployment and/or low wages, federal income tax revenues drop, sales of all consumer goods fall, and the government has to step in to provide food stamps and welfare.
If corporate America would pledge to pay their employees liveable wages, food stamps would virtually disappear. Are you listening, Sam Walton?
Republican crybabies. Obama meets with business leaders and they whine. Can't win with these nutcases.
Mikeevietvet: You "smell" racism? You would probably smell racism if I said the night was dark or s**t was black. Get a life. You are the racist !!! And an idiot. Stop attacking anyone who criticises your God as being racist. Are you Muslim? Afraid of an drawing? Grow up!!!

I think he was joshin' ya!
DB, Johnson's war on poverty was working until Richard Nixon, his policy's messed up American. Some things is still costing us like his taking the dollar off the silver standard and allowing it to float on the world money market. This only benefited the rich and took money out of the hands of working people. I disagree that social welfare cost more then any other part of the budget, I think if you look at the pie you will find that to be Military spending. Its killing us and yet you right wonders worry about the penitence that the government gives a single mother because you force motherhood on females. The poverty rate are caused more by a lack of jobs which by the way republicans cause with your greed. If you azzholes think that poverty is a good thing and welfare doesn't help those that need it, or that people on welfare are there because they would rather be home then work, or that welfare is a great life, maybe you should try it.
And since I as a member of the middle class who takes home an actual paycheck pay 35% in taxes, I pay the most. Because remember we need to have a look at percentage of overall income, not a dollar figure like your buddies in the bar--see this is where the Right likes to muddle things up. They play around with percentages versus dollars because they know the ill informed go, "ooooo, so much money.... it's enough."
Guess what? We don't pay our taxes by the dollar amount. We pay them by the percentage. You give me one good reason why Mitt Romney pays 11% taxes on millions and I pay 35% taxes on thousands. I pay more than a third of my income in taxes and he pays 10%-- around the amount of sales tax in some states-- on his millions. Is it easier for me to live on 2/3rds of what I make? He can't do it on his millions of dollars? I want a million dollar dancing horse and a wife who fantasizes she raised her children because she kissed them before they went off to school. I want an elevator in my garage and guy who looks after my dancing horse that makes more money than most of the people posting here.
Get over the idea the wealthy will leave. They won't. They don't want to live in some third world rat hole where the government is as corrupt as congress and they could be poisoned by dinner.
And if they do leave, who cares? Why does it matter? All of the people who do all of the REAL work are still here. We can make televisions and automobiles, air conditioners and toothbrushes and we can do it more cheaply and we can do it better without the users on the top. And no one will be outsourcing our jobs for an inferior product and a bigger bonus.
Lets do the math, the rate they want to change is to charge the wealth 3% more on their taxes. After the 250000 for a couple. So a person making a half a million($500000) would only pay 3% more on $250000, the amount over the first $250000, or $7500 more. $7500 is nothing to a person making $500000. It still leaves $492,500 to hide in the Cayman Is., you just got to feel sorry for all these people broken by the Government, and having to contribute to the country that makes it possible for them to rip the rest of us off at every chance they get.
I've never even made 6 figures, and I doubt I ever will (I don't want to work that hard). I am in favor of going back to the Clinton era rates for everyone - but not just for a portion of the population. I also only support tax increases if done in conjunction with spending cuts (including defense and entitlements).
If everyone doesn't feel some pain, the ones that don't pay more will just continue to demand more from the "wealthy". Eventually this will result in increased taxes on everyone, or accepting a lower standard of living due to the drag on the economy from the ever increasing debt levels (or more likely, both). So, by opposing tax rate increases on just the wealthy and not in conjunction with spending cuts or general tax rate increases, I am looking out for myself (and everyone else).
Also, just because I can take more from others, doesn't mean I should. The wealthy already pay a very large portion of the income taxes in this country - a higher % than they make. Sure, we could raise their tax rates to 90%, but would that be morally right? In my world, the answer is a resounding no.
MJ, if they do leave they won't be missed, as it will allow others to step up, the rich by not paying enough taxes are killing this country. A lack of revenue is the problem, we actually need to spend more in area's of infrastructure and education and the like, and spend less on the military in order to move this country forward. Grover Norquist be damned, raise the taxes on those that can afford to pay more, not the middle class who are cash strapped from years of trickle down economics which is killing this country.
I agree changes are needed so at some point, all personal revenue is taxed as ordinary income - or, better yet, lower the tax rates and do away with the revenue type classifications altogether. By the way, Romney did propose these changes at various times during the campaign (not saying he would or would not have done them, but he did talk about them).
There are a lot of non-rat hole places in the world. They can move to Canada or Europe, or as the guy from Facebook did, move to places like Singapore. Also, keep in mind that the uber-rich can travel constantly. So, although they may have citizenship in a country, that doesn't mean they live most of their lives there.
It takes a certain skill-set and personality to run a successful business - especially a large business. Think of where the US would be if we had pushed the Steve Jobs and Bill Gates types to other countries. Where would we be now if the PC and Information Age revolutions had started in Europe instead of the US?
While I agree with you on infrastructure and defense spending, I disagree on education. We already spend far more per student than any other country in the world, and we have the lowest student to teacher ratio in the world. I don't think money or the number of teachers is the problem. We need to take a hard look at what we are doing with education, and what the rest of the world is doing, and find better ways to use the resources we already have in place.
I also think that pledges in general are detrimental to effective governance. Politicians should never back themselves into a corner by signing absolutists pledges - they need to be able to react to changing situations.
It's simple. The wealthy 2% are going to have their taxes increased to the same it was during the Clinton years. Obama has a bill out that keeps the Bush Tax cuts in effect for people making under $200,000 a year/$250,000 for couples. 98% of Americans will keep their low tax rate. All republicans have to do is sign this and consumer confidence that they won't be $3,500 short next year will keep us out of a recession. If republicans refuse to keep the tax rate low for 98% of Americans then we will not only have every household take home $3500 less but that will lead to tightening spending because there is less money to spend. That would lower demand and then create fewer jobs.
It's a no brainer. Both parties say they are for keeping the tax rate low for the 98% of Americans. Are they? Let's see what the Republicans do with this bill?
@Gil - reading your comment - you don't look like independent.
The rich 2% are paying taxes as they did during Clinton's years. Whether it's through a deal or over the cliff.
If the republicans remain the party of no, just means the economy goes over the cliff along with the wealthy getting a tax increase. So the question is, would you rather pay a tax increase during a economic recovery when people are spending more for the product you sell or would you rather have a tax increase while in addition to a consumer spending freeze where some can no longer afford to buy your product.
So do the wealthy want to take one hit to their earnings or several? Your move "party of no".
Also, do you think the 98% of voters won't notice who did this to them?
Hey BEVERLY IN THAT GIN SLINGING TOWN CHICAGO IS.
I just bet a dime to a doughnut that this meeting was just one heck of a bi-partisan kabal of one.
You are so full of crap it's incredible! Fair wages and safe working conditions have been legislated, and they are still not adhered to...I give you the coal industry. How many mining accidents have been linked to safety violations?
As to overtime, I give you Wal-Mart. You won't support American workers but you have not problem with the Chinese? ...now that's patriotic.
And We the People have had enough of your anti-American ilk! You should consider moving to Dubai.
I don't understand WHY these politicians are not consulting world-class economists, Nobel Prize Winning Economists, and folks with Phd's in Economics!
Do any of these "politicians" or business owners have a degree in economics that apply to running an entire country?
That's how former Democrat Bill Clinton got us so far ahead, and people with world-class economic degrees, I'm sure, would be happy to contribute their knowledge to the President of the United States AND the United States Congress.
I think that would be MUCH better than to continue to experiment with bickering political opponents.
CAN WE GET SOME PROFESSIONAL ECONOMISTS ON TOP OF THIS PLEASE?

Do you folks actually read articles and look for what is missing? Obama made his first meeting with the Unions...His second with "Big Business Leaders" and will meet with Congressional leaders later in the week. WTF...nothing is changing in Obama's approach over the past four years. Our Economy moves or suffers by American "small" business. Where are his meeting with small business owners? Why is he working with Unions and neglecting the needs of non-union labor? How does a President profess to be doing anything when he is so selective on who he will listen to and who he will support? The madness will continue until the President attends to the real needs of the middle class in this country. Our middle class need jobs not just Union jobs, not just jobs earmarked to the children of illegal immigrants not just jobs that pay back political good will. Our middle class needs opportunity and a stable environment to risk and start up small businesses without the concerns of what pain the Federal Government will inflict upon them instead of encouraging the risk for ventures that will support their needs not punish them for working to be prosperous. Until Obama actually listens enough to understand the needs of the American middle class we will end up going over that cliff. You can't grow an economy if you are hell bent to play favorites and listen selectively to those who will gladly stroke you under the table.

First of all, I thought you folks wanted LESS government but you're constantly calling on President Obama to "do something'. Why don't Republicans talk to "non-union labor"??? Aren't these so-caled "non-union labor" persons part of the Republican constituency?
"Unions" are "employee unions" and they are responsible for making sure that American Workers receive a decent wage, health care and other fringe benefits, and make sure American Workers are treated fairly in the workplace.
Just 2 weeks ago, Republicans cast their vote for Mitt Romney who wanted to repeal the minimum wage AND he would have repealed Affordable Health Care.
If Republicans REALLY want "limited government" then quit asking for more and more!!!
Why not talk to YOUR political leaders in the Republican Party and see what THEY can do for you?
The main problem I see with the message from the GOP is that math does not support their talking points.
They blame entitlements for taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor. They blame regulations and unions for taking money from executives and forcing them to give it to employees.
By their logic, the rich should have seen a decrease in their share of the wealth (as it is taken from them), while the middle and lower class realizes an increase (getting the money from the rich).
MATH, however, tells a different story. Over the last 20 years, the rich have seen their share of the wealth increase by 400%. The middle class has seen their wealth stagnate, and the poor have seen a reduction of their share.
So, in reality, over the last 20 years money has shifted away from the middle and lower class, and gone to the rich. The wealth has actually been redistributed to the wealthy.
If we are "taking" the money from the rich and giving it to the poor, why are the rich getting MORE of the money? Why are the poor getting LESS of the money?
If regulations are "killing" business owners, why are business owners getting MORE of the money while their workers get LESS?
This is basic math. Over the last 20 years, the money in our economy has moved to the rich, and away from everyone else. On top of that, the rich also pay the least in taxes, as a percentage of their money. If that same money was shifted to the middle class, more tax revenue would have been paid . . . however, because it was shifted to the rich, less tax revenue was paid. And thus we need to increase the revenue received from those that are holding all the money.
You know American Girl...I've read your babbling and I am truly sorry you don't understand any of the complexities that affect our Nation at this time...
First I am not "you folks"....Second, if you bothered to read what I wrote you would clearly understand that I would like our Government to step back, become smaller, and let our economic system work for American not for just some parts of America. Third, I think there are probably a great deal of unaffiliated laborers who vote for Democrats, at lease in right to work states. Imposing a system of favoritism for union labor and requiring individuals to pay unions dues is like forcing someone to pay a tax to an organization just to have a right to work.
Unions are a joke. The Federal Government provides employee protections and standards for employees so for the Government to require an employee to pay Union Dues to an organization is excessive and unnecessary and only serves as a source of income for those seeking political favor. I am not surprised by your confusion as you post many question that take about two seconds of processing to understand the answers, at least for those at average to above average intelligence.
I did cast a vote for Romney because I believe that he had an approach that would encourage individual dignity for Americans to earn their own way and to improve their lot in life by personal success. Not to earn part of their lifestyle and be dependent on the Federal or State Governments for the other part. That is not achieving personal independence nor is it accepting personal responsibility. I am personally very sad for people who are ill prepared or just feel defeated by our current economic limitations. People who do not feel as if their contribution is important so they must grab onto the coat tails of someone else to get what they want. It is all very sad this America that Obama and the Democrats wish to impose on a free spirited people and how they certainly wish to lead for the most corrupt.
It sounds like the rich are being their usual greedy selves. Obama has them in a corner if he asserts himself. The question is, will he? He can say to them, "Be willing to pay more taxes or I will let the cliff hit and your precious economy take a hit." They don't want an economic collapse. He has that over them. Now he must prove that he is the president all those who voted for him think he is (advocate of the common folk). He, of course, could sell us out. After all, it was he who signed this fiscal cliff to begin with. Now his real intentions will come to light.
Miss Piggy, Beverly, and American Girl, won't mind working 80 to 120 hours a week for $5.00 an hour no overtime and than paying $700.00 to $800.00 a month for Obamacare. It's better than being a house wife. I can make a good deal with companies too see, doesn't mean it benefits you, when companies and politicians come out of a meeting saying it went good, worry.
Actually, reading both of your posts, it is quite obvious that she understands the complexities facing our nation a lot better than you.
You, however, certainly have demonstrated a command of rhetoric. Not able to address the issues she raised, you just resort to a superior attitude. Very eloquently, I might add.
Archstanton said:
I suspected this. That is the biggest reason I did not vote for Obama. I was reading accounts of this deal he signed with the Republicans in the Cortland Standard. He was willing in various deals with them to gut all sorts of programs for the poor in exchange for very mild concessions from the Republicans. Obama was willing to offer up a lot of sacrificial lambs. The final deal was what we are looking at now, the Fiscal Cliff. Obama sounded more like a Republican than a Democrat when this deal had been talked about. I remember reading his comments in the newspaper then. Then along came the election, and everybody forgot about it. Obama was painted as some great progressive bearing gifts by his supporters in the election and as a spend-crazy Santa Claus offering wonderful free stuff by the extreme right. He was none of these. Obama was willing to cut deeper than Ronald Reagan. That is why I voted for Mitt Romney, a moderate Republican, because his proposals were actually milder than Obama's when it came to cuts.
Obama is now talking like he will stand by the little guy in this fiscal game of chicken. I wish I could believe that. I am willing to be wrong on this one if he surprises me and actually stands up to those rich people. It is high time someone simply forces them to pay taxes and have them cover the deficit and debt and not try to bleed it out of the poor and middle. He could force them if he wanted to. He could redeem himself by revealing that this fiscal cliff he signed was a trap he set for them, a clever trap to force them to finally yield. Then I'd forgive him and credit him with being a better poker player.
But he has to follow through!!!!
This is completely wrong. Most of the rich support the higher taxes that Obama wants. Have you followed what Warren Buffet is saying? It is well-known that Governor Romney beat Obama as far as the white vote is concerned, but what is less well-known is that Obama beat him as far as the educated white vote was concerned.
Most rich people realize that the country's infrastructure does not come for free and are willing to do their share to support it.
The problem is that SOME rich people, lacking scruples, have made the simple calculation that paying a few hundred million dollars to politicians is cheaper than paying slightly higher taxes. All this claim about "principles" (or "principals" as their surrogates so often call it), is pure smokescreen. People who have principles and believe in personal responsibility do not try to skip out on paying for the infrastructure that they used to make themselves rich. They realize they didn't do it all by themselves.
Only very few of the rich are "let someone else pay for it" camp. Unfortunately, these are the ones with the megaphone.
PJ: I just commented on the facts. That is all I ever do. As I said to the A** at 1.76; "if s**t is "black", I'll call it "black" -- do not accuse me of racism. My comments are carefully written and always factually based. If you want to designate me as a "non-independent" because of my comments I suggest you do some retrospection. Get an education and learn to read.
Where is Ted Nugent?
@Gil - I don't doubt anybody's intention. But since you are talking about facts - let me point out that you actually ignored facts in saying obama is low on specifics. Did you read his plan vs Mitt Romney's? You clearly didn't. Secondly you are making a sweeping statement about how obama met CEOs more than diplomats. Well FYI .... most of these CEOs are republican. I know one of them up and close. So he is trying to make an honest effort to understand their side of the story and impact on American economy that these so called "fiscal cliff" is going to have. How is that less important than meeting foreign diplomats. It seems you are free to criticize Obama eitherway.
To be honest - you don't really know what you are talking about. No offense. I am just saying based on our exchange today. Like you - I am trying to stay objective here.
And yet, Republicans label Obama with "communist"! Who is really supporting a communist government?
Yeppirs, that is exactly why Romney would not meet with the employees from Sensata Technologies. At the very time that Romney was running on creating more jobs in America, his company, his pride and joy, Bain Capital , was moving profitable jobs in America to China!
No matter what you say, that says it all!
PJ: There has been no "exchange today" as I made one truthful comment as to the amount of time spent with foreign diplomats and set forth two quotes.
You are a typical liberal putting words in my mouth. Please start reading carefully.
John,
First of all, it is the gold standard, not the silver standard. And no, moving to that standard did not increase poverty.
Nixon moved us off the gold standard because there was a move to cash in dollars for Gold. This is because the US Currency was printed beyond what our gold reserves could back. Printing money to cover deficits or monetize debt is what causes poverty to increase. Taking us off the Gold standard was the response to our irresponsiblitly over increasing spending to try to lift people out of poverty.
Read the programs carefully, the design would never work. What it did was move money to people who did not earn it, did not save it, and then found out after being on it, that getting off the money was not worth the effort.
I am one of the unfortunate souls who lost their middle class jobs and have not been able to obtain another. Every time I started to move ahead with temporary work that exceeded I would lose an equal amount of benefit that week once I exceeded about $100.00 Extra. Most people work or lie about the amount they work for, but I didn't. The only benefit to the matter was I ended up with partial support an additional 4 weeks with unemployment.
I've known people on welfare. It is harder to get off it because of the security of having that check coming each month.
@Gil - get a life. Typical dumb republican. Can't even respond logically and objectively.
Funny how the President gets more cooperation out of CEO's in the private sector than out of our own elected officials who are supposed to be there to help us.............
thank you to these CEO's who came forward...........please continue to work with our President as it would seem the GOP will not.
It is good business to recover our economy..........it is bad business to obstruct the recovery.........
the republicans are all about bad business............
GET RID OF THEM !!!!
Then why do you support a party that want's to "govern" women's reproduction? That want's to control who get's married? That want's to privatize Social Security and feed the Federal Funds to Wall Street brokers? That for the last 30 years, hasn't met a war it didn't like. That supports tax payer subsidies for corporate agriculture. That supports tax payer subsidies for the Exon-Mobile?
You say you want the economy to work for all America not just parts of America...I don't buy it. If that were the case you would not be anti-labor, since MOST Americans fall under the category of labor rather than management.
The workers choose to join the union...no one forces them. If they don't choose to be a member of a union...they are free to work in a non-union shop. As to non-union workers in "right to work for less" States voting for Democrats...I'm sure after working in non-union shops long enough...they do vote for Democrats. Republicans certainly offer them nothing.
So now the Government forces people to pay union dues? You have an interesting view of the law. As to laws governing working conditions...how well has that work out for non-union coal miners? The coal companies could care less because they simply pay off the regulators. Then there's overtime pay. Let's see, who was that the just recently got fined for violating wage & hour laws...oh yes...Wal-Mart, a good non-union company.
Of course you did.
Ol doc You know nothing about coal mines. My son works for Koch bros. (David). He makes $35 an hour, full health benefits, he doesn't pay a thing for health insurance. Full dental, vision and a great retirement program. He gets 2 paid days off per month also. 3 days per month sick pay.
Only fools and stupid people pay someone else to negotiate their pay. Non union workers will always have a chance for better pay and benefits. A good employee is worth their weight in gold. A poor worker needs someone to protect them from getting fired.
The "fiscal cliff" is an illusion . . . this is well worth reading:

this article would be more believable if it was'nt totally left biased. Some points make sense some don't.
Do you believe america in not in debt either?
Although the deficit has been going down for three years we are still very deep in the ditch you republicons drove us into. Thanks for nothing.

So David Cote thought it was a good meeting because Obama didn't read his Blackberry during the meeting. Brilliant.
Obama seems like he would be pretty useless during a meeting. He loves to 'doodle' and not pay attention to details. I bet that's when he's dreaming up his speeches of platitudes, empty promises, and cheer leading fluff.
alan_static
Obama seems like he would be pretty useless during a meeting. He loves to 'doodle' and not pay attention to details.
alan,
What meeting did you attend with President Obama?
Not one, but he loves to doodle during meetings. What meeting have you attended with Obama?
There is still that invisible Obama out there Beverly. Remember the foul mouthed one that only Clint Eastwood and some republicans can see? That scarey figment of their imagination who was brought on stage for all the world to behold. Well, Alan still sees him no matter what powerful anti-hallucinatory his doctors put him on. I think that is the Obama being described.
Another conspiracy theory. Maybe if Romney had actually tried to explain how his plans would work instead of relying on fools spewing non sense he'd have won. They spent 4 years making accusations they couldn't prove about Obama thinking people besides the same ditto heads were paying attention. They weren't, it was the same group cheering each new, "revelation". Get used to losing as they'll never again win with just the support of the 1% and greedy fools willing to destroy the country to save a few hundred on their taxes.
Actually, I want to save thousands in taxes that obamacare will bring. Read the bill (if you do, you will have done more than any democrat that voted for it). The destruction of the nation is coming from the egomaniac in the White House. Instead of working from day 1 back in 2009 when he took office to improve the economy and jobs, he put all of his effort into the abomination known as obamacare. That is what caused a major rift in this nation. You can blame your imaginary 1% (by every definition, obama is part of it) or you can blame the real cause: a leader who is so vain he will not deviate from his destructive agenda to try to help the majority. I used to be a die-hard democrat, but am very ashamed of the way that party has handled itself in recent years. Maybe some day I can vote for a democrat again without wondering what damage will be done to this nation by electing that candidate.

Also, I think FOX NEWS is bad for the Republican Party because they have all those crazed hacks on spewing deliberate lies and misinformation
McGeer, you just described the entirety of the Republican Party and their failed messages. They lost because their concept of inclusion is to demonize everyone not rich and white. That is not an imaginary 1%, just as Romney's 47% comments and mentality was not imaginary. I agree that some things that the administration has done have not sat well with me, but when given the choice between someone I trust 95% of the time versus someone who lied every time he opened his mouth. Ultimately, you should be ashamed that you would support a political party that would destroy our nation and economy just to regain a seat in the White House. Obamacare is nothing more than a culmination of many republican and democratic ideas on healthcare that the American people needed to offer some form of protection from the ruination that has become our healthcare system. Truth be told, the republican party would prefer that no Americans be provided a safety net in regards to healthcare, just those that can afford to pay for it and the crooked ass politicians that get it for free as paid for by the taxpayers like myself. At the end of the day it doesn't actually matter who you would or wouldn't vote for, as the Democratic candidate has won and the democrats will continue to win elections by overwhelming numbers based on the good ol' boys flippant attitudes about the diverse voters of our nation and their continued hatred for anyone that doesn't look like them or can afford to buy one of their $50K plates at their fundraisers. Good riddance Republicans, Boehner and McConnell are the next big names to go.
McGeer: Amazing that Obama won his first term being as how health care reform was the centerpiece of his campaign. Most Americans supported health care reform until republicans convinced them it was bad. You're right that few Americans even know what they're against only what talking heads tell them. It's also Amazing that the nearly identical program Romney instituted as governor which he touted as a great success and a model for the nation is now it's doom. Funny how Obama can institute a national health care plan that gets much of it's cost paid for by reduced payments to providers based on higher numbers yet Bush's drug plan which costs nearly as much per year was simply a give away to for profit hospitals and drug companies by not asking them to kick in a penny for that extra 100 billion a year. Republicans talk about fiscal responsibility then bash Obama for actually paying for his health care plan but never a peep when Bush passes a drug plan because he simply doesn't fund it. You do realise just because you don't add taxes specifically to pay for something doesn't mean it's free don't you?
I have to say to Allen. Our President is one of us that can do more then one thing at a time, You know he can walk and chew gum at the same time. It is sickening to see all of you haters setting here being hateful when people are trying to find solutions to the problems we face. Allen and you others. Why don't you try to come up with some helpful commits and put your country first for a change. If your not part of the solution then your part of the problem. Come on people, Its All of our Country. Its in all of our best interest to get things done. We all need to stop the name calling and get in the game here for the good of the Country. Not red or blue, but red, white and blue. That means all of us. Its the right thing to do.
I am starting to think that we should just let the Bush tax breaks expire all together. We need to pay our way out of this mess. We need to go and put Capital gains back to 30%. Hell it is outrageous that people like Mitt Romney can make $20 Million and only pay 10% because he claims his income as Capital gains. Once we get out of the mess then we should rework the tax code, But not right now.
Hey McGEEK fk off lamest fkn post iv'e read today fk u
You have to look at capital gains as a whole, however. People should be rewarded for holding investments in companies, particularly upstarts which do well, but there should be a penalty for selling investments and "shorting" a company into its destruction and getting paid for it. Taxes on interest of held investments should be kept very low, but there should be a tax on short-term financial stock and a tax on stock sales in bulk (bulk would be relative depending on the company size). There should be taxes on financial investments, but taxes on economic investments (there are some similarities, but many differences between these two paradigms. Some simple research and reading can tell you what these are) should be kept low.
This encourages investments and betting on companies to succeed while hopefully curbing vulture capitalism like Bain Capital. This would help boost the economy somewhat, but we need an immediate boost in demand to really make this all bounce back.
The problem with letting all the tax cuts expire, and I actually agree that it would be simpler if we forced these fools to deal with their lunacy by doing so, is that DC, and government in general, NEVER cuts spending. At best, and this is even rare, they cut the amount of future increases, and call that cutting.
So just like your teenager, they figure all the money is theirs, and it's just a matter of how to fool you today.
Reagan's disaster is that even though tax revenues grew, spending grew faster.
Our federal government has a proven 50 year history of overspending. They overspend during good times, and they overspend during bad times. Only a fool does this. And they always have very convincing arguments. And so here we are, 50 years later, with so much debt that they must manipulate interest rates in order to not destroy the Republic. They are though destroying the real estate market and the ability for seniors to earn on their savings.
Most folks are simply too dumb to realize that these con-men and women in DC are truly selling their souls and our futures for their own benefit and power.
Actually, there is a lot of good people in both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The Tea Party has merits too.
The main problem appears to me to be a lack of communication and actually sitting at a table and getting something done without pork. Actually write one bill at a time and vote on it. That would be true patriotism for the America people. We vote the legislative bodies in along with the President. Mr. President Obama has good ideas that others do not like. That is fine. But do something constructive for the American people that elected you. Cut a lot of the pork and extra spending would be a good start. Figure out a good and simple tax plan for corporations, companies and individuals.
Just do it. One law at a time. If you have to re-write the entire tax code, then do it. Quit bickering.
I for one have received two offers for Obama cell phones and have shredded both offers. I am 100% disabled and am an retired old woman. I pay for my own cell phone and home phone. I cut back on other expenses to afford them. I think the Obama phones are a great waste of taxpayer money. I pay my taxes and have very little income. I am proud to pay my taxes. I do not want to see them go up, though. My property taxes have doubled over the last few years and that is a hardship on me, but I still pay them.
I support the legislative bodies and our President. I may not agree with everything, but I do follow the laws and have never been in trouble. I also support the second amendment and the right to own and carry a gun for self defense. I have never had to use it.
I get cranky reading all of the stupid comments. We need our leaders to lead and do what is right for the country. Not just certain individuals. Those that do not like it here should leave. I believe the United States is the greatest country in the world. We do need to stop excessive spending and get the government officials to work together. ABC, NBC, CBS and even FOX channels agree on this.
If the government does not start working like it should, the United States could become a 3rd world nation. We, the proud citizens do not want that. I pray the officials of this great country work together. Fix the problems and get the country to prosper. Even if it means cutting back on the EPA some and getting some of the coal plants going. Why not retrofit them to capture the CO2 and pump the CO2 back into the ground? It is possible and not that costly in the long run. It would put thousands of people back to work along with rail cars. Re-open the federal lands for drilling. Stop the foreign National Oil Companies from drilling in our ocean and let the companies in the United States drill there.
Please work together. Millions of people are counting on you. Roughly 23 million are not employed or under employed and would love to get a good job.
The 23 millions you mention are pawns, hostages in this sick game they play. it's like Israel and the Gaza stip: why can't they be friends?
Thank you for your good wishes and prayers. I'm afraid it's going to take a divine intervention to get somewhere. Maybe the Pope should address the issue himself. We need a lot.
I'm with you Chuck, let them all expire and work on paying down some of that debt.
that would give congress time to consider a working tax reform that the country as a whole can get behind and support.
it seems that rich, white america is noe dead. if i were one of them i would sell all assets and move off shore. obama can then fund his vote getting give away programs with the tax he puts on the welfare checks, if there will be any aftyer the hated rich pull out. those of you left behind, i suggest learning russian or chinese. if there is any work you will be working for them, non union of course.
Here's an interesting perspective on the source of gains or rewards, on investments, in a stagnant economy, posted by Nerm_L on another thread #1.30 :
Yes, the rich are angry: is it because they have not done so well in the last 30 years? Ever been in an accident where the party at fault is the angry, aggressively aggrieved one? You have just been rear-ended by today's guilty, shameless "conservatives".
The entitlement reform issue is rearing it's ugly head once again. All that is needed is to raise the cap on wages earned for contributions into Social Security and Medicare. With less employers offering pensions, social Security needs to remain in place and fattened up.
Mr. Duke was later overheard muttering something about greasing more palms to keep ObamaCare from affecting their EPS, and how the whole Mexico thing's cover wouldn't have been blown if it weren't for those meddling kids at The New York Times.
game kid Do you have a tape of him saying that?
Wal-mart moms... aka welfare moms
game kid, why shouldn't walmart want to be exempt form obamacare. The auto workers are? Have you seen their health care insurance? people have to buy a lot of cars form goverment motors(gm) to pay for that.
unreal-3070801 are you aware of the medical benefits that members of congress get for themselves? They voted themselves lifetime coverage even after they leave congress. And when Obamacare passed it was discovered that there was a clause in the law that required members of congress to pay for their own coverage just like all other Americans! They quickly changed that. What's good for the goose is also good for the gander! They should not be exempt from being the same as all Americans!
Why is it ok for Nancy Pelosi's pals in the bay area to receive waivers from Obamacare and not Walmart?
I'm no fan of either, but the fraud that is the Democrat Party is in evidence with Obamacare, as they have issued thousands of waivers, with the vast majority being granted to Democrat districts, the vast majority being located in Pelosi's district.
It is vile, evil, and disgusting, and evidently many liberals are absolutely ok with this vast double-standard.
john-2950032 was recently seen spewing this piece of hate:
Some people are morons, through and through...
You understand when you say this it's like a dog-whistle that says you listen to the right-wing talk radio loons and fox news.
It also makes you sound like an illiterate dope.
In the English language it is Democratic Party and Democratic Districts.
I'm sorry if your wingnut tee vee buddies think there is nothing democratic about the Democrats. By pushing this nonsense, they make you sound like a poorly educated rube not to be taken seriously.
The term Fiscal Cliff is designed to scare us all into continue the debts, overspending, and bailouts of the banksters. The term was described first by none other then the head of the banksters, Ben Bernanke. Instead of complaining about the Fiscal Cliff, why don't we hold a treason trial for Olde Ben?
The fiscal cliff would cut spending in both the military and in SS, one pet from each party. It's meant to sting them both so they come up with a less painful, but nonetheless effective solution to reduce the deficit.
Alan, it's comments like yours that make me cry when I think of America's future....
Please don't breed...
Wonderful and subarashi desu! I wish only the best for these corporations to work with Obozo and crew. However, if you have a 401 and you are planning to be secure in the future, you are going to be out of luck with the way America is changing! This country under the current leadership and those who support the liberal democratic party are responsible for all of the changes!
Most of our universities are led by far left liberal and secular progressive nuts who are brain washing the young students, who in turn will practice the same as they go into government later! When the handouts stop because we have cut our throats and went over the fiscal cliff, you better believe the right to bear arms will be a necessity!
What you are seeing in Greece and now Italy is a good picture of what America will look like because of the way our country has changed for the worse starting in 2008. We have been able to correct the movement to disaster in the past because of sane people working together in Congress and across party lines.
Now there is no compromise and it is all about my way because I won and I am in charge and you better fall in line!! Well that BS won't work and it never will!
I love this country and I fought for this country and have always believed with my heart America would continue to be the greatest thing ever developed, but now I am worried and I feel we are heading down the path to destruction from within. As a senior, I am hopeful sanity will prevail and we can change the present course, but it is going to take a lot of compromising and prayer to get us back on track.
Both democrats, republicans, and the president better put their egos on the shelf and work finally for the people instead of their own personal agenda. Buena suerte!
Hate to tell you, but the handouts have been cut consecutively the past 2 years. I can see where people on the right love to cloud that issue, but I have been watching the reality.
I wish uninformed and ignorant people would stop saying we will look like Greece. What a falicious argument. Greece has no manufacturing or technology base to even compare to ours. Alot of their income is from tourism. How about cutting the social welfare to Big Oil, Big Pharma, and Big Ag!
Meredith What?? Food stamps for one are at a all time high in the number being handed out. Where are you getting your info MSNBC??
And most of them are collected in the Red States.
Ben Bernanke, speaking to the Congress did in fact, coin the term, "Fiscal Cliff". He did so in the hope It would help direct the Congress toward meaningful legislation that would grow the economy. Seems, rather than stirring Congressional members toward that effect, the term became a popular blame ball to be tossed too and fro among various tea baggerites who actually thought Bernanke was speaking in support of them, and against those who opposed their do nothing policies. In the future, when speaking before Congress, Mr Bernanke would do well to speak in single syllable words, comprising single clause sentences, aided with a liberal sprinkling of various, and regional, common slang.
Okay wait a sec, do we have manufacturing, oh maybe a few jobs left for now... And after all our techno jobs have gone to India then we won't have that either. Somebody needs to shake the bajeezus out of you to get you back down to earth!
johnRN
not sure what "bigAg" you refer to but cutting farm subs will make buying groceries equal to what people pay for health procedures.
Rick: You spew out right lies probably through ignorance. People like you get all their news and opinions from sites like Fox without any research on your own. Obama offered compromise. The grand bargain he offered Boehner was cutting $6 in spending for each $1 of increased taxes on the rich. Republicans stated they wouldn't accept $100 in cuts for $1 in new taxes. Their offer from republicans was 100% in cuts to social programs and government funding with zero increases on the rich. That's why we have no budget and are facing a fiscal cliff. Thank god the majority of the country doesn't depend on Fox and it's lies but learn the truth.
The Republicans would rather the government to go into debt than for private enterprise to do so. Keeping the government in debt, leaves that money in the private sector. It's a simple choice: you can contribute to paying down the government's debt, or, by withholding your contribution, you can force government to shrink. In general, the tax cuts (funding private investments) and the Medicare Part D benefit (funneling government money to Big Pharma) worked as designed. Corporations are back to making record profits (and bestowing big bonuses). It's the government that's stuck with a bill it cannot pay, and it had better start paring down to bare essentials.
And food stamps reached an all time high under Bush as well. Wouldn't you expect food stamp usage to increase when 5 million lost their jobs the last 6 months of Bush's presidency? Food stamps cost a total 70 billion a year, a drop in the bucket. Romney proposed increasing military funding 200 billion and restarting the space program at another 200 billion or more. If we can afford war profiteering we can afford to feed the hungry.
Larry, you need to get back on your medication.70 billion dollars is a drop in the bucket? What friggin country did you come from? Where ever it is, you need to go back.
Remember, you kicked our ass, Romney lost, therefore he didn't spend one red cent.
Obama, is our savior, I keep telling myself that and I just can't believe it. He's done nothing for me, not one damn thing.
The United States of America manufactures 21% of the worlds manufactured goods. Second place is China with 15%. Yes, the USA still manufactures and is doing more manufacturing and more technology since the outsourcers have lost the election.
whoever thought of outsourcing Tech support to a country that does'nt speak english is... i can't say on here...2 hours wasted just trying to understand the tech support...kinda like sitting in on a congressional debate.
Foodchain
Meredith What?? Food stamps for one are at a all time high in the number being handed out. Where are you getting your info MSNBC??
On the contrary, you are mistaken.
More were on food stamps under Bush than under Obama, according to the most recent figures."

You can keep drinking the FOX HATER AIDE; but it only makes you a very dumb and deluded bitter person
Funny you should say that. The republican opposition to Obama's tax increase for the rich is that it would only raise revenue 40 to 80 billion a year, a drop in the bucket to our deficit. So an 80 billion tax increase is a drop in the bucket but 70 billion for food stamps is humungus right? Point two, you're a fool. Obama's no ones savior but he's a hell of a lot better than the alternative. Romney would have made Bush look like a fiscal conservative.
Kinda funny that most of those food stamps go to red states huh? Texas alone accounts for 16% of Americans on SNAP.
Beverly, really do you just make s hit up? I thought some of the other posters on here were way out there but you have won! Congrats!
Funny indeed. Not!
27 of the 32 states that take more money than they pay in taxes are red states.
14 of the 18 states that give more than they take are blue states.
It is us hard working tax paying Democrats who are supporting those welfare queen republicons.
Let them secede. That will eliminate our deficit!
Red State Socialism | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
60% of the electorate say OK to raise rates on upper levels.
CEO's say they're willing.
GOP - is talking about taking a whole 14 days to give answers on Benghazi and the UN secty reading a statement from Intelligence. Huh?
Does this sound like they're worried about debt, middle class and Jobs, Jobs, Jobs?????????
Result: GOP brand further ruined, kaput, over.
You could take 100% of what the top 2% makes as taxes and it does not run this government for two weeks. This whole issue is just silly. How about raising the taxes on the 40% who pay no income tax??
newsgirl,
Well, the Congress is back in town and most of the GOP are acting like there was not an election last week.
They have about 19 working days in this lame duck session to pass legislation that our President will sign.
Extend the tax cut for those making under $250,000. let the other tax cuts expire. Or let them all expire.
That would be a start. Get it done before they go home for Thanksgiving.
Come back and tackle the spending cuts until Christmas.
Get working and stop posturing.
And that goes for Mr. Paul Ryan, who said today that he will not vote for any new tax revenue.
Hey guy, you lost. You are just a congressman again.
Because the 40% have barely enough to live on as it is.
Foodchain, how would taxing those people (the working poor, elderly, active duty military in war zones, etc that pay no federal income tax) whose money all goes back in to the economy help to spur economic growth?
See Multiplier Effect
Another republican idiotic talking point. And you could also tax those 40% paying nothing 10% and you couldn't fund the government 2 days. So why should anyone pay taxes since no group can pay it alone? Had Ryans original tax plan passed Romney would have paid an 0.82% tax rate in 2010. No ones asking the 1% to pay it all only their share and their share is more than the 10.3% Romney owed last year.
Larry, I have no problem with the bottom earners paying nothing. I do however feel we should cut out the earned income credit. You shouldn't get back more than you pay in. I wonder how much money that would save.
With that I agree 100%.
getting this country out of debt is going to take more than a tax raise for the rich.sooner or later it will be all of our turns too.
You're right but lowering the rates on the rich which is the republican plan isn't the answer either. Republicans counted on buying our votes like Reagan and Bush did. A 20% cut would give most middle class taxpayers a few thousand less in taxes, I'm sure that got them a lot of votes. But they still couldn't sell the 1% being over taxed when their candidate only owed 10.3% last year and paid less than 14% over the last 12. When most of us are paying 20% or more it doesn't seem right that someone paying 10% should pay nothing.
Why that's just a stellar idea. I wonder how many of those people are rich? I'd bet most of them and the ones that aren't well, who cares, right? They can beg in the streets. Lazy worthless good for nothings. I mean who needs teachers in poor rural areas, or clinics or anything that doesn't pay at least oh 100k a year. Those lazy damn students need to get out and earn their fair share for the government. And I don't know about yours but my grandma could do something other than sit and watch her shows--maybe take in laundry or mop floors. Yup. Good call. You are a sheer genius.
unreal,I agree with you.I did my taxes and because of Obama's getting America Back to work credit and the earned income credit I received $300.00 more than I paid in.For 38 years I have paid taxes into Federal and State of California as a single person.Last year is when I received more than I paid in.I use turbo Tax and rechecked it three times. It is ridiculous but I did not feel bad. I've paid through the nose the other 38 years so that the welfare Mom's could get welfare to work training, subsidized childcare,Section 8 and food stampsand foo
No of course not. How about hearings on why the Teapublicans cut security funding from the State Dpt. budget. Lets have Old Man Mcain ask that Rep. congressman from Utah if he meant you gotta have your priorities meant.
Sorry John but remedial civics classes are needed. No budget, no law, no legislation of any kind can be enacted without approval of the other House (the Senate in this case) and that of the President. Each one has to support the legislation in order for it to become law. So in the situation you are claiming happened both the Democratically controlled Senate and the Democratic President would have to pass and sign the bill into law. The House can't do squat without the other two agreeing. So if it indeed did happen guess who else thought it was a great idea? Yup the Senate and the President. Make sure you understand the relationship before you vote again...okay? Thanks.
Obama has his entire financial strategy wrapped around the socialist concept that the governments should control the money, freedom, and spending of the people.
Forget all the pondering of who did what and what will happen because of some politicians re-election strategy.
Private enterprise, not governments, is the driving force of the economy. Governments take and then control. That is the lesson.
Are you really this ignorant? Wait my mistake, because from your comment that is VERY obvious. The question was not necessary.
You hit the nail on the head. Obama is going to sink this country!
dangstraight and foodchain, what right have you lost in the last 4 years?
The right to be proud of and respect our governmental leaders. ALL OF THEM!
You're wrong entirely. Consumers drive the economy. The economy doesn't pick up when producers produce more but when consumers buy more. That's why giving tax breaks to the 1% under Bush never created the millions of jobs he claimed they'd create. Bush gave over 3 trillion in tax breaks over his presidency mostly going to the 1% and had a job growth record the worst since the fifties.
So you can't name a single one? It must be the right to have a white president that you miss.
OK Larry, let's start with warrantless wiretaps. How about expanding the patriot act? Invasion of privacy? How about due process? The government, by executive fiat, has the ability to detain citizens, indefinitely, without counsel or a trial. They also executed that US born cleric in Yemen, or wherever, without a trial or even bringing formal charges against him.
The race thing has worn thin. Bush sucked too.
If you were a regular reader of MSN blogs you'd see numerous comments by right wingers referring to Obama as a ni**er, porch monkey, black muslim etc. Just because your opinion isn't clouded by race doesn't mean many aren't. I'll argue any post on merit but when the only comments are Obama hate I assume the worst.
Larry, you sir get the dooshebag of the day award! Always crying race.. .@!$%#ing idiot. My personal choice for presidency is Condoleezza Rice.
And yes, ALL of them! Why? Because NO ONE has stepped up in the past 4 years to be a true leader, up to and especially the president (is he black?)
I read First Read almost every day. It is truly shameful how some people can't get past the issue of skin color. Tolerance of racism is just as bad as using a racial slur yourself.
Very few of my comments refer to race. I usually reserve for a hateful anti Obama post that doesn't give a reason for that hate. If you read my posts you'll notice i give reasons for defending Obama which most on the right don't give for hating him or when they do it's usually wrong. I accept the douchbag award and would like to thank all those who supported me in this endeavor.
No worries Larry, I hate the GOP just as much as Obama, I believe the issue is that the 2 parties in control right now have waaaaay too much control, and we, as the people of this country, have been stupid enough to allow this to happen.
Too late! George W. Bush, aided and abetted by Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, beat him to it!
Meredith, you "have been watching the reality" what, TV? If handouts have been cut, why is there an increase in those on food stamps? If handouts have been cut, why is there an increase in those who after their unemployment benefits have expired are now on disability? Are you freaking kidding me? What is so unfortunate is that this country could have started to turn around, but instead too many people are content with the government throwing them crumbs. Now, those who are hard working and have been able to stay above water, their way of lives are now being jeopardized. Off the *ucking hook!!!!!
And the right wing propaganda machine scores another triumph with another ignorant, totally uninformed and completely blinded so called American. Because "pandy" the REALITY is the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans who are currently receiving government assistance would kill for a job at a reasonable salary, with benefits. That is a FACT. And one ignorant conservatives continue to ignore while jumping on the incredibly stupid "people are content with government throwing them crumbs" BS bandwagon.
And republicans refuse to recognize that there are more white people on government assistance than people of color. And, more from red states. It simply doesn't fit their narrative of racism and hate.
Yuck.
Disability is not a cake walk it can take years to even get it. There are special rules for those over 50 when it comes to disability.
Do any of you know the average amount in money, food stamps maximum allowance is for a family of 4? Amounts to about $1.18 per person per meal. Yeah! These lowlife takers are really sitting back and living the high life off the Government. Get real! These people would gladly trade this dole for a sustainable job. Reality is, as someone above pointed out, the vast majority of recipients of such assistance is poor white people, not that it does, or should, make any difference. It's waaay past sorry to classify the basic needs of those in need, by the color of their skin, or the culture of their origin.
There are more white people on assistance, because there are more white people than blacks!
Figures don't lie,
But, liars do figure!
Foodstamps cost 70 billion a year. We can't afford that but could afford Romneys plan to increase military funding 200 billion a year that military leaders didn't even say we need. And we could afford the hundreds of billions Romney promised on a new space program. Why do we believe republicans pick and choose what we can afford?
Larry,
Have you stood in line and watched what these people on food stamps buy with mine and your money? Walk outside and you'll see them lite up. If you can afford to smoke, you can afford to buy your own food. Both political parties pick and choose. It isn't just a republican thing. How much did the democrats spend on goverment motors, selenda, and so on and on.
And yet you can't just cut funding to affect those you feel unworthy. If their income is low enough they qualify. If you cut amounts by 20% you cause millions of children that get very little to get less. It's all based on the hate issue. Republicans point to the guy with a beer and a cigarette buying with food stamps never to the skinny poor kid eating nothing but beans twice a day. We can afford the 200 billion more Romney wanted for the military that leaders didn't even want or ask for but can't afford to feed the hungry? Read your bible. It's very similar to the union issue. Most teachers, firemen, police are only moderately paid. republicans hone in on outrageous contracts and benefits to paint all public servants as evil. I oppose overly generous benefits but don't oppose police, firemen and teachers getting fairly paid. I look at them all not just the few who abuse the system. Go after them.
Unreal,
I totally agree...look at California with their EBT (electronic benefits transfer). You can buy food at fast food restaurants. Even as little as two years ago, you could take your EBT card and use it at a casino to pull money out to go gambling. These programs were designed to help those in need purchase essential food products that are healthy so these families can sustain themselves through a hardship. They were not designed (and have since been perverted) to be a way of life for people to not better themselves, to use at their convenience at the local fast food place. It always pains me to see them also stand in line at a grocery store buying alcohol (yes, you can buy booze with an EBT card), Starbucks coffee and steaks while others are scrapping by with generic brand food. Is that what you want for those people? Is that fair to those that pay into a system that craps on them the first chance they get?
sooner or later people are going to realize that both parties are in the same bed. They both fight and argue like a married couple. In the end though they both turn out the same crap, just in a different perspective.
Unreal, I have not seen what those people buy with their food stamp money. I have never been on food stamps. Why are you living in a ghetto anyway?
The meeting looks good - now back to green nuts, labor, welfare cheats, and the rest of the people Obummer owes. I would venture that most tax payers voted for M.R.
By the way, can someone direct me to the free money line?
How about to the free right wing propaganda line? Oh nevermind, you OBVIOUSLY already spend alot of time there. Oh and by the way "commonsense" as a taxpayer, I voted for President Obama. And was glad to do so.
I am a taxpayer, pay taxes EVERY year, and I cannot understand what 'handouts' people believe that I am looking for since I voted for Obama? Oh, and my company is HIRING people, and our benefits did not go up ONE.SINGLE.PENNY. for next year. The scare tactics really need to stop.
Hey that what's redistribution is all about. Idiot, how do you think we plan to pay for Obamacare. No wonder you're a Tea Bagger. You don't have the common sense of a billy goat.
Romney won most seniors and military most of whom pay no taxes so clearly he didn't get most tax payers. Most of us didn't buy the, I'll cut revenue 20%, increase military 200 billion and cut the debt. We aren't stupid. If he could have done it he'd have explained how.
Romney lost the senior vote by 5% -> Factcheck.org
The Congressional Research Office released a report on "Taxes and the Economy" dated September 14 that basically says taxing the rich does not harm the economy. This debate should be over -- raise some revenue and back away from the cliff. That's what the CEO's should agree to support.
As was proven during BOTH the Reagan and Clinton presidencies. But please do not come out with facts and studies. They have a tendency to make conservatives heads explode.
So explain why these rich CEO's don't voluntarily pay more in income taxes? I mean they complain about not having to pay more but they are under no obligation to only pay what is required. People like Warren Buffet who complained about paying less than his secretary could easily afford to contribute a billion to help all us less fortunate souls, right? They sit and complain, but in the end they are even more guilty because here they COULD help and DON'T!
Raising taxes on the rich, or even everyone will not keep us from going over... they are the 1% for a reason, there just aren't that many of them...
JK19623: As a conservative you'd never understand. A very wealthy person that has lots of legal loopholes and can therefore can pay very little isn't complaining about his low taxes he's explaining how they're unjust. When people like Buffet, Gates, the Hollywood elite and the thousands who attend 50K a plate Obama fund raisers they know they'll pay more if he wins. They're more concerned with the good of all Americans not just the 1% even if they belong. If you believe rich democrats could really help by paying more why do you deny that taxing rich republicans more would also help? As a middle class American my taxes aren't voluntary why should someone like Romney's be?
Interesting that the top 400 people on Forbes have a net worth that exceeds the bottom 60% of Americans or 185 million people. Thirty years ago they owned 10% of the nations wealth today they own 24%. Paying the lowest tax rates in 50 years has helped them considerably, did they really need another tax break?
Larry,
As a bleeding liberal you still can't comprehend what I asked. IF these rich folks are so intent in helping us middle class people, why aren't they giving more NOW?? I mean you don't need to have government tell them to pay more if they feel that their wealth could help the collective whole. The point is that they chose NOT give more when they CAN give more. It's easy to sit back and bitch that the rich should pay more, but actually put your words to action and you find that these rich Hollywood elite, the Buffets and Gates of the world are kicking and screaming just like any other sane rich person would do.
And who's to say that what they pay is or is not fair? Obviously you would point to the 60% of the population that think that they should pay more...of course...since the people that don't pay would indeed love to have those that were fortunate enough to be successful pay for their own way. You complain about people like Romney who legally took advantage of the tax code as it's written, but you gloss over the fact that others actually get more than they paid in taxes (if they even paid anything at all...i.e. earned income tax credit). Now is that fair? You see that's the difference, we want EVERYONE to pay taxes, not just those that happen to have be more wealthy than you or I....
Because they hire a good accountant/taxman to get them all the loopholes. No one in the 1% does their own taxes unless they are themselves a tax accountant.
So we should penalize the rich for being smarter than the rest of us? Unless they are filing their taxes illegally, then what they are doing are availing themselves to all the deductions and credits that they are allowed to take. It's no different than someone who doesn't take the mortgage deduction on their income tax or any other deduction that they might be eligible to take. If they don't avail themselves to the professionals then whose fault is that?
JK1963: You're mistaken. If Ryans plan had passed as first written Romney and people like him would pay nothing or next to nothing. Availing themselves of tax deductions legally when them and people like them can indeed affect what they pay by buying influence is not something you or I can do. Romney's biggest super PAC donor has 815 million he'd like to repatriate to the U.S. and guess what one of Romneys plans is too allow a tax holiday for repatriation of offshore money. Think that's a coincidence? Making them pay the same tax rate as people who work for a living isn't punishment it's fairness.
Larry,
It appears that you still haven't got the gist of what I'm trying to say. Why is it that the liberal rich hasn't paid more NOW, I mean RIGHT NOW!! They complain that they should pay more, so what's holding them back? These are people that supposedly with their "good intentions to what is fair" have (right now) the ability to help America and they sit back...waiting and waiting (and complaining and complaining) that they should pay more. So what's stopping them?
And as for your post...would be kind enough to cite the link, because otherwise, needless to say, anyone could make that scenario up...
Actually, Warren buffet has done his own taxes. He just sat down and filled out the forms, and came up with a 17.7% tax rate. What tax rate are you paying?
Well, let’s start with the ultra-rich. Bajillionaire Warren Buffett has argued that he isn’t being asked to pay his share. He went around his office, asking people what share of their income they pay in income taxes. Buffett’s 17.7 percent tax rate compared a bit too favorably with the 30 percent tax rate paid by his secretary.
So it appears that the tax system favors the super-rich over working stiffs.
And Buffett went a step further, putting his money where his mouth is. Last November he issued a challenge to his fellow billionaires:
I’ll bet a million dollars against any member of the Forbes 400 who challenges me that the average (federal tax rate including income and payroll taxes) for the Forbes 400 will be less than the average of their receptionists.
So far, no-one has taken him up on this bet.
Taxes, Warren Buffett, and Paying My Fair Share - NYTimes.com
"Barack Obama won the election.
Barack Obama won. He won by turning out the most people in a well run campaign. In other words, he won fair and square.
We here at RedState are American citizens. We have no plans to secede from the union. If you do, good luck with that, but this is not the place for you.
Too many people have spent the past four years obsessed with birth certificates. Now they are obsessed with voter fraud conspiracies, talk of secession, and supposed election changing news stories if only we had known.
So let’s add dabblers in this latest nuttiness to birthers as a category of people we do not welcome at RedState."
http://www.redstate.com/2012/11/13/is-it-time-to-roll-up-the-welcome-mat-here/
The fact he won does not say much about the the American people. Unions and big government won.....America lost.
It's nice to see a few conservative blogs acting reasonably. They make bring the GOP back from irrelevance if they can shed the conspiracy theorists and nut jobs.
America won on November 6th. If we can afford 200 billion for a bigger war machine we can afford 70 billion for food stamps.
at this point it is not real money anyways, so lets just look at it like this:
I will trade 3 generations of my countries children to become slaves to China so that we can take care of our people now.
Had we accepted Romneys plan to cut revenue 20% and increase military spending 200 billion all on the Americard you'd have to add a few more generations.
If the liberal democrats (and I mean the liberal ones, not all of them) have their way, 200 billion will look like my 12 year olds change jar. Obama has proven to be more conservative than the leftist of the party however... or atleast fiscally non-existent.
From the article:
“We support ‘loophole closers’ but only in the context of broadening the income tax base while lowering rates and moving to a competitive territorial system like most of the rest of the world,” Proctor and Gamble spokesman Paul Fox said in a statement Tuesday evening. P&G’s CEO Robert McDonald also attended Wednesday’s meeting.
Okay, so you want a "competitive territorial system like most of the rest of the world"? Let's start with once again increasing tariffs on imported goods. Which the REST of the world does with tariffs disguised as Value Added Taxes (VATS). Then let's follow that up by corporations actually paying the taxes they are supposed to pay, instead of using massive loopholes to pay as little as possible, or nothing. After that, we can have a shareholders revolt for all publically held companies whereas the SHAREHOLDERS not the Board of Directors set executive compensation. Compensation that does not include massive golden parachutes, tax dodges and salaries that are thousands of times more than the average worker.
So there you go "Robert McDonald". I believe we now have an excellent start.
There is a sad truth and it is a truth and that is if the human race does not stomp out the extreme right wing train of thought that Big Corps and Big Business are the voice of the Almighty Himself and whatever they say goes these politicians on the right that are bought off by billionaires and their lobbyists will forever hold D.C. in gridlock. Greed for control, governing power, and domination is one thing but just absolutely refusing to work with others simply cuz your horse lost and you're not gettin you're way is childish to say the least. I believe a wise man once said the "The Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", and until we realize that we are being controlled not by a 'big bad brother government' but by a vast network of Big Business and Banks who CONTROL the government and keep it where it wants to be. I'm definitely not going to be an Obama cheerleader here because he has done some things I disagree with but I am also thankful this election was no right wing takeover from a Big Business Manchurian candidate puppet in the form of Romney. Tolerance, acceptance, and generosity is 3 words that aren't in the GOP dictionary and for that they may suffer for it.
For those saying raising taxes on the 1% won't help because they're so few is non sense when 400 people are worth more than 185 million at the bottom and the average 1% is paying the lowest rates in 50 years making them pay a little more isn't unreasonable.
#1.18
Rimbauda: Wow strange logic. You advocate taxing the poorest people in the country 30% of what little they make so the 1% won't be burdened? You do see the difference that taxing someone with 10K AGI 30% would leave them 7K while 2.3 million on someone like Romney making 21 million would still leave him 20.7 million right? The taxes designed to target the poor and middle class are sales, property, personal property, gas, utility etc. There are lots of taxes designed to get little chunks at a time from the 99% that isn't as noticible while none of the taxes affect the 1% at all.
What advice? These CEOs sound just like the Republican tools on the Hill. That whole talk of "closing loopholes" to raise revenue is just a smoke screen for saying they don't want to pay more taxes no matter what.
Well by closing loopholes they would be paying more taxes... loopholes are what makes the effective tax rate on the rich so low. If they closed all loopholes for greater than $250,000 earners, you can sure bet that would bring in more revenue. Its the middle class Obama is trying to keep rates low and loopholes open. keep in mind loopholes are also considered things like child tax credits and mortgage interest writeoffs which are extremely common for middle class, but there are much bigger loopholes for corporations/rich people. That's what Romney's plan was, cut loopholes for upper class. But... all politicians really are crooks, so who knows what will become of this!!!
If Romney had closed all loopholes the rich use it would only have made up 1/4th of the 20% cut that's why all major economists said it couldn't be done. Romney's plan was smoke and mirrors. It based it's projection of revenue neutrality by assuming a 3% job growth would stimulate the economy enough to make up the loss of revenue. This was proven false by Bush who's nearly as big a tax cut only saw 2% job growth which would have been expected with no tax cut. Republicans lie by presuming all job growth after a tax cut was due to that cut when very little really is. Smoke and mirrors.
When it turns out bad for the middle class Obama will have the CEO'S TO BLAME ALONG WITH THE REPUBLICANS AND BUSH. Nothing is ever his fault. You people have fun being nasty. You sound just like all those cults that followed their leaders into death. And you tell everyone their stupid and just want their way. Ask yourself what you sound like .
Under Bush his last 6 months. The economy collapsed costing 11 trillion in national net worth, 500 billion less a year in revenue, 5 million jobs, millions in foreclosure, banks bailed out to the tune of 800 billion dollars to prevent a 1929 style collapse. Clearly anyone blaming Bush is grasping at straws.
Larry,
Who took control of both houses two years before President Obama came to the office? From January 5th 2007 until January of 2011 the Democrats had majority control of both houses in the Congress. Who sets the budget, makes fiscal policy, writes and passes the laws...the Congress unless the President veto's the bill and the Congress can not override the veto with a 2/3rds majority vote.. So either the Democrats contributed, caused, or ignored their fiscal responsibilities that ended in the economy melting down. How about the Glass-Stegal bill and its impact on the economy? If you want to thump your chest over some imagined accomplishments you might as well claim the largest wrecking of the economy since the Depression...yeah the Democrats helped build that. At least be honest and admit your party lost an opportunity to save us from free fall by being fiscally responsible. But those two words don't impress a progressive much...fiscal responsibility.
Now back to your regularly scheduled progressive rants.
You people are fools. If a democrats president everythings his fault, when a republican president is everything is caused by a democratic senate or congess. Everything that caused our deficit started with Bush. From the tax cuts, to the 100 billion a year drug plan to 2 wars all unfunded. No bill presented by democrats were forced past a Bush veto. Bush had access to the best minds in the country as far as economists, military or any other. The buck stops at the president whether he's republican or democrat. Time for you whiners to man up and admit the damage Bush did. You can point the finger all you want but the vast majority of Americans blamed Bush for the economic collapse. Rightly so.
Even using the term fiscal conservative when talking about Bush or Romney is absurd. Bush's spending was obscene and Romney would have been worse. What's fiscally responsible about cutting revenue by 5 trillion dollars when you have a 16 trillion dollar debt or increasing military spending 200 billion when no military leaders request it? Or starting a new space program that would cost hundreds of billions?
Warren Buffet hit the nail on the hear to raise taxes on the wealthy and for sure Hillary will be the next liberial President in 2016. Eat your heart out GOP and Tea Baggers. You must learn to love all regardlessw of their skin color or sexual orientation. Can't you see how Colin Powell dump those sorry a-- Tea Baggers. Chief Justice of Supreme Court(who is a conservative appointed by Bush) ruled that Obama Care is constitutional. Speaker of the House John Booooner made a comment that Obamacare 'is" the law of the land. Also Hannity has come out and said that GOP and Tea Baggers " MUST" do more to capture the minority vote in 2016 if they stand a chance to get the White House back. Hillary will win. Next Hannity will come out the closet and say he's gay or bi just to get those votes. Come on GOP you "MUST" brace diversity. The days of the good old caucassion boys are long gone.
Wow you sound so tolerate of others views...LOL Typical lib. By the why I'm not racist I hate Biden too.
Foodchain sounds like a typical teabag he hates everyone especially his self!!
The one thing you don't ever hear them discuss is REAL spending cuts. It's always, "We have to raise taxes!"... They could raise taxes 100%, it would never pay off the debt as it now is greater than the whole US economy. You short sighted dumb-asses that think that cutting spending isn't an option are economically retarded.. you'll be the first ones eaten in the upcoming economic apocalypse..
And yet you think the government would be better cutting revenue 20%, increasing military spending 200 billion and starting a new space program at hundreds of billions in cost? Democrats can't hold a candle to republicans on finding new ways to spend. We, unlike you want a real plan to lower our debt not smoke and mirrors. The fact raising taxes 10% on someone like Romney who's last real tax bill was 10.3% won't pay off the debt is no reason they need a break. You'll raise a lot more raising taxes on those making millions a year than on someone making $800 a month. The question isn't why they shouldn't pay more it's why they should pay less as that's what they campaigned on.
So Larry, let's talk about real loopholes shall we? Get rid of the earned income tax credit, get rid of the mortgage deduction for homeowners, get rid of the property tax deduction. How does that sound?
If you eliminate those only on the wealthy sure. The wealthy also have the carried interest rate of 15% which is merely a tax break for hedge fund and vulture capitalists. Basically a special rate on commision income. If they invest 100 billion and collect a 20 billion comission following certain rules they can have this taxed at 15% instead of 35% as 31% of Romney's income was under carried interest. We the middle class don't have these specially crafted tax breaks why should we give up the few we do have? Romney owed 10.3% in 2010 on 21 million income. To act like he faces stiffer tax burdens than the middle class is idiotic.
Larry,
You miss the point. How about EVERYONE give up all the tax breaks?? How eliminating the individual deduction, and all that mentioned before? You seem to be fixated on those wealthy individuals, but the bulk of the deductions that the Treasury misses out on are one that I mentioned. We should give up all these tax breaks no matter if you are rich or middle class because in the end they are what is holding us back... The more inequities in tax breaks for both the rich and the middle class we can get away with the more equal our tax structure becomes...
and Larry's DA will be the main course.
JK1963: Great as long as you include the big three that keeps the wealthys rates so low. Capital gains, dividend interest and carried interest. Doing that would add a few thousand to the average middle class but triple them on the wealthy. See if you can sell it. Interesting that you simply avoid the question of my post 17.1 since I never mentioned loopholes or deductions. People like you never defend you simply deflect.
Phil: No idea what Larry's Da means. Babble much?
CEOs will do anything to preserve their obscene salaries and bonuses. Unlike the rest of us, they can dictate their requirements and preferences to the highest levels of government. The only "fiscal cliff" for them will be if their stock options don't net them the correct numbers of zeros.
Obama doesn't need any CEO's advice. He is a sexual intellectual. AKA a Folking Know it All. Don't believe me? Just ask him.
as usual
basically the same 3-4 nasty-foul mouthed users
leading off the discussion here on newsvine.
Who, incidentally do quite the opposite of bringing people together.
These trolls must have nothing to do all day long but to troll the news and lead off every news article with divisive name calling, mud slinging innuendo etc. etc. etc.
Maybe they should get a job... and if they have a job, well they aren't doing it......................................... unless they are paid to sling mud in every article released here on msnbc and that to do so in the very first few posts........
Obama remains the worst president in modern history for businesses!
He was totally ignorant on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Consider the following:
1) Obama refused European help that knew what was happening and could have collected nearly all surfacing oil near the accident location.
2) He refused to talk to BP America with decency and intelligence - they knew what was happening.
3) Obama caused nearly all the economic damage with his stupid oil drilling and fishing moratoriums. Natural leaks from the 35,000,000-year-old Gulf reserves have been occurring for years. Crude oil tar balls rolled onto the beaches of the Gulf and California long before any oil wells were off shore.
Enuf for me! This Chicago-town lawyer who never really worked for a living will not learn much from business CEO's. He's just learning business!
Your post was a joke:
1) Blow out devices which are required on all rigs in the North Sea were Not required in the Gulf due Chenny and Bush exempting companies from using them in coastal area's around the USA. ( If Republicans had not blocked this regulation there never would have been a blow out!!)
2) BP is a FOREIGN company and worked with FEMA every step of the way to cap this blow out!!!
3) Economic Hardship caused by the moratorium until we could drill safely was insignificant compared to the damage done to tourism and fishing. (Are you really that stupid Iowa or are you drinking.)
4) By the way Iowa, why did Senate Republicans block any criminal or civil liability from depositions given to congressional investigators.
By the way I was born and raised in Chicago and also worked in Houston for eight years and Iowa you do not know what you are talking about.
Michael g barrett, if you are from chicago, you are either a crook or a saint. Dirtest town in america.
He's a republican. He doesn't need to know what he's talking about as they rely on lies and conspiracy theories, not facts. Facts are for democrats.
Obama had meetings with Labor and CEO's. What about the small business owners, don't you think their input would be helpful? Always, half a@@ backwards.
Michael G Barrett:
1) There certainly was a blowout preventer (BOP) on this well above the Gulf water 'floor' - it was massive - maybe 135 feet tall and made by Cameron International. Most of the robot camera coverage was focused on it. After the damaged pipe leading up from the BOP was cut off, the crude and natural gas leakage came from the top of it.
2) FEMA was not involved. U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen was the lead government response person. He did an excellent job and had a hard time handling Obama's clueless representatives.
3) Comment nonsense.
4) Why mention Senate Republicans. I am a Democrat.
NO ONE SHOULD EVER TALK TO ANY oil company with respect.
And the Union leaders are creating jobs how??And GE is so far up Obamas butt,I can't believe they are creating anything. There is an 8 part series on the History channel,"The Men Who Built America",I think everyone should watch it'including the jerks that were in attendance at the Don't Fall Off The Cliff get-together.
jillie64
Did you see how they built America. The same way the robber barons are doing now, low wages, lay offs unsafe work conditions while those titans lived in greedy, obscene, affluence.
I guess you missed the titans brought and paid for President McKinley. What about Teddy Roosevelt who took them to court and brought up their monopolies.
Looks like history is repeating itself. Our President is working very hard to bring fairness to working poor and middle classes just like Teddy Roosevelt. Remember when President Obama gave a speech where Teddy Roosevelt gave his speeech about his vision for the nation in Osawatomie, Kansas?
Probably not, I bet you thought Osawatomie was a Kenyan village
Yeah, how about it Beverly... By the way.... Hows that 66% percent increase in income tax the democrats put in effect last year going to help pay down the 13 billion dollar budget defecit in Illinois.. I hear its working... The budget defecit for this year in Illinois is 14 billion....lol...
Beverly is a racist... Those bad white rich people... WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is from September of 2011. The following is something I believe BOTH conservatives and liberals can agree on. And if you notice, Mr. Obama , politicians from BOTH parties, and the mainstream media, have not mentioned this proposal. At least, not that I could find. And yet it is still out there. And would definitely avoid the "fiscal cliff" if enacted and if the Republicans do not once again use the debt ceiling as hostage.
" Unlikely Allies Uncover $1 Trillion in Savings for Super Committee "
"As the Congressional “Super Committee” begins its search for $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction, a new study released today by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) and the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) provides the panel with a great place to start: more than $1 trillion of spending cuts with appeal from across the political spectrum. While the two groups have widely divergent views on many tax and fiscal issues, they have joined forces to identify federal programs that both Republican and Democratic lawmakers should recognize as wasteful and inefficient uses of taxpayer dollars. The U.S. PIRG and NTU study identifies 54 specific cuts in federal spending, including:
• $214.9 billion in savings from eliminating wasteful subsidies to agribusiness and other corporations,
• $428.8 billion in savings from ending low-priority or unnecessary military programs,
• $232.3 billion in savings from improvements to program execution and government operations,
• $132.1 in savings from reforms to major entitlement programs.
All of those would be a great place to start...lets include killing ethanol production and blending and increase our mile per gallon for every car on the road by 1 or 2mpg and extend the life of our engines to boot. That would cut another $6 billion in subsidies not to mention the lost efficiency with blended gas.
OMG....scratch my "you fill in the blank" and I'll scratch yours. Obama needs to go back to high school and learn the basics of balancing a check book.
And you need to go back BEFORE highschool, actually learn how to do something called RESEARCH, then follow that up by actually learning the FACTS.
Progressive, are you angry? did your feeling get hurt? Did Joe4 piss u off? Can you do all this research because you are unemployed,on walfare, food stamps and can't just get along?
Joe4USA - Right on!
Obama could start reducing spending by stop taking lavish vacations like the one he took in Hawaii last Christmas which cost taxpayer millions of dollars. Cut the free health care to politicians and reduce their fat paychecks. Stop giving billions to other countries, stop policing the world, stop the pork barrel spending, etc.
No doubt Washington is out of control and we have a bunch of morons who can't agree on anything that includes reducing money from their fat pockets.
And here we go with the "Obama vacations" BS. Which is exactly what it is. ALL presidents for the last 50+ years have taken "lavish vacations". Also, it should be noted that politicians do not get "free healthcare".
Now as for the rest of the comment? DEFINITELY well said.
Some people don't think black Presidents should have the same luxuries as other Presidents.
clotho, Here we go, bring racism into the game. You must be black, because everytime they open their mouth, they hollar racism. That is really boring.
If you spend any time reading blogs like these you'll see those on the right refer to Obama as a ni**er, monkey, porch monkey, black muslim and many more that I've seen. Now why would we think race is an issue? It's not paranoia if it's true.
Larry,
I have been reading this blog since 2009, and I have never seen anyone use those terms. If so, both Liberals and conservatives would blast them right off of this blog.
You should have read the one a few days ago on Oprah starting a health food line. The racial references to her and Obama kept tyler very busy. There were at least 5 posts on page one with racial slurs. I never read past page one.
Tyler only sensors people who lean to far to the right for his taste. He seems to give everyone else a pass on their filthy comments and name calling. Just seems that way anyway.
If the country is lost it will end all that. How did we get in this mess again?
Only those on the right use racial slurs. Have you ever seen a liberal use one?
Say What?
Isn't it ironic that Obama said that he would be open to meeting with Mitt Romney to explore Mitt's ideas on how to fix the economy. Wasn't it Obama, who vehemently opposed Romney economic recovery plan and said the math just doesn't work?
@Larry-367607.....YES I have seen liberals use racial slurrs. The Rev Al, Chris Matthews and many others.
Since other Presidents have been allowed to take Christmas vacations why should this one be stopped? The last President took more vacations than any previous president in my memory.
We would all be interested in a list of the politicians you believe get free health care.
Since the House of Representatives are under Pay/Go and the Republicans (currently in charge of the House) have stated there will be no pork barrel spending, what pork barrel are you talking about?
Yea...OK
Obama took office with a 10.9 trillion dollar deficit. The CBO projected a deficit for the October 2008 through October 2009 fiscal year (Bush's last budget) at 1.2 trillion dollars. Even had Obama merely ran under Bush's budget for 4 years the deficit would have been 15.7 trillion. That's why the majority of Americans blame Bush. Those on the right have spewed about Obama blaming Bush for 4 years about the deficit but it hasn't stopped those with brain enough to do simple math to know it's true. Instead of 1 liners how about someone on the right explaining how Obamas to blame when Bush left him a 1.2 trillion deficit.
