GOP senators say they would try to block Rice nomination

If President Barack Obama taps U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to take over for Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, her nomination will be met with stiff resistance by some Republican senators.

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., each pledged to filibuster Rice's prospective nomination as secretary of state due to her public explanations for the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Amid speculation that Obama might nominate Rice for the top diplomatic post to succeed Clinton, who has said she plans to step aide now that the president has won a second term, McCain said he would "do whatever to block the nomination that is within our power" at a press conference Wednesday on Capitol Hill.

Graham and McCain, joined by New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R), also called Wednesday for Congress to establish a temporary select committee to investigate the attacks in Libya.

But as Obama prepares for his first post-election news conference, at which he will likely be asked to address personnel issues in his administration, Republicans meant to send a strong pre-emptive warning.

"She is so disconnected from reality that I don’t trust her," Graham said.

The GNOP took no time at all to pick up where they left off before the elections. They are already showing that they know little else but to obstruct Congress and hold the country as hostage.

Susan Rice's credentials are impressive. From Wiki

"Rice was a three-sport athlete, student council president, and valedictorian at National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., a private day girls' school.[6] She played point guard in basketball and directed the offense, acquiring the nickname "Spo", short for "Sportin'".[6]

Rice said that her parents taught her to "never use race as an excuse or advantage", and as a young girl she "dreamed of becoming the first U.S. Senator from the District of Columbia".[2] She also held "lingering fears" that her accomplishments would be diminished by people who attributed them to affirmative action.[2] After her father's death in 2011, she said, “He believed segregation had constrained him from being all he could be. The psychological hangover of that took him decades to overcome. His most fervent wish was that we not have that psychological baggage.”

Rice attended Stanford University, where she received a Truman Scholarship, and graduated with a B.A. in history in 1986. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.[7][8]

Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, Rice attended New College, Oxford, where she earned a M.Phil. in 1988 and D.Phil. in 1990. The Chatham House-British International Studies Association honored her dissertation titled "Commonwealth Initiative in Zimbabwe, 1979-1980: Implication for International Peacekeeping" as the UK's most distinguished in international relations.[2][9]

The high nabobs of No-No are at it again! Of course--she is is a highly intelligent woman--and as Rick Santorum once said, the TPGOP will never have intelligent people as part of their party. It appears that the TPGOP has not learned anything from their humiliating defeat in this election. If they keep doing what they are doing, they will keep getting what they got! When will they ever learn?

John McCain continually proves how bitter and vengeful he still is. The GOP leaders have already given their verdicts of guilty in regards to Benghazi, the president, Patraeus, and Rice. This further demonstrates their inability to look past their discriminative attitudes and shows the American public that it will not matter what information comes out. They have already made up their minds.

Filibuster away - each of them can get up and talk for as long as they want - they can not tag team - once Graham gets tired and McCain dies from exhaustion, than maybe the senate can vote. If a senator wants to filibuster it is within the rules and if the full senate cant pass a cloture vote than filibuster it is but that should mean they talk 24/7 until they finish without meal or nap breaks (let them pee). Lety them look the fools they really are. If they can convice the Republican caucuse of 45 and get 5 more Dems they can vote down the nomination, if not....

Take the FAKE filibuster away from these crybabies and make them do the REAL filibuster, they wouldn't last six hours and then it would be over. When the Dems remove the fake filibuster from the Senate, gridlock in Washington will finally be defeated. The Republicans are past the limit on employing the Fake Filibuster; it should be removed from their arsenal and retained by the democrats until they have used it the same number of times, then it should be gone from the Senate forever.

President Obama hasn't nominated Ambassador Rice yet.

He is just testing the waters for a reaction.

This is the kind of thing I see every Sunday with Payton Manning, now as quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

Payton steps up to the line of scrimmage and assesses the defense. He calls and audible, then another, then looks back at his running back and tells him where to stand, then hikes the ball.

This is yet another brilliant move by the President and his staff.

The old and past-their-prime Veterans, Senator McCain and Graham are about to get burned by a 65 yard TD pass to Eric Decker.

After the play, they will be sitting on the bench scratching their heads.

Filibuster rules need to be changed back to needing to actually be on the floor talking. As it currently stands, a senator can filibuster by calling it in and saying they'd like to filibuster... AND they don't even have to say publicly who they are! Ridiculous.

I have no problem with the practice, but you need to take some physical effort (through standing there looking like an idiot rambling at the podium) and the people filibustering would then be made public as they would be seen at the podium.

America was never intended to be a Fascist nation as you obviously believe it is

ah yes, the Nazi/Italy references...except repubs dont hate Captitalism or guns..

Now that I've narrowed down your hatred to "Progessive Liberals" verses "Comprimising" Democrats, I proved once again, that it is YOUR perception and YOUR interpretation of what Progressives ARE that is at the heart of your self-inflicted contemptible disgust.

and many others who see it for what it is. keep trying to pick up the clean end of the turd. You are just sanctimonius and I've seen your kind on here time and time again. You believe you are right and everyone around you outside your viewpoint wrong and garbage. You might want to see what dangerfield above said. Speaks volumes. Unfortunately when you play Hellen Keller its going to be quite hard. Echo Chamber indeed. Good bye im done with you. have the final say

I'm waiting. And trying to cuddle up to Dangerfield doesn't move you to the center any more than spray-painting his face got Romney there.

Boy, when I read what Thomas had done to you here while I was away I have to admit I was a little embarrassed for you. Next time your hear the beeper on the Beer truck you should just move so he doesn't run back and forth over you like that.

I love your posts and your passion, Tomas, but Caesar Augustus happens to be my favorite conservative. Caesar is right by saying that both extremes are unhelpful when it comes to compromising and running the country. Caesar is not a radical. I think that the main problem here is labeling people. I voted for the president, but I'm not on welfare, never have been. Everyone who voted for Governor Romney is not an ignorant inhabitant of a trailer park or a follower of Fox. We need to see each other as individuals, not as types. I oppose the idea of telling either conservatives or liberal/progressives that they're not welcome on this board.

i love it when you guys have this immeasurable 'ass kicked' gauge. Yeah Tomas handed me my ass by skirtin around everything and labelling me. However chick binder you think you 'up' me in anyway you, live in a tiny bubble but its your bubble so I hate to burst it. You may have a dozen libs agree but i also consider the source of your 'friends'.

Chick binder since you think you're ever so smart, like i told Tomas there, go read what dangerfield wrote again. Maybe it will sink in with one of you.

I dont need to cuddle up to Dangerfield, I respect him. I also respect BCWC which has a different political view than I do. catch ya on the flip side trapper keeper.

Thomas - Caesar considers himself the ultimate authority on all things so don't waste your breath. He can't reconcile the fact that his side lost in spite of all his pontifications to the contrary prior to the election. It is impossible for him to process this and I am sure it will take him quite some time to go away. He is like a mosquito in your room at night, isn't he?

What credibility would she have as Secretary of State when she has demonstrated an ability to lie - and often - for the administration? He would leave the senate, thus opening for election his empty senate seat in Mass. Now who do you think the Relards would nominate for there side, wow, Scott Brown back in the senate, imagine that. We do not need another prevaricator in the Administration. We all know Bengazi, but remember when this "genius", as our Ambassador, told the UN that Gadhfi was providing viagra to his troops so as to rape women -- a story she got from a London tabloid? She drew an international laugh and embarrassed this country. We don't need her.

We KNOW with absolute certainty that the White House, The State Department and the CIA knew the Bengazi attacks were not spontaneous protests over a video. We also KNOW with absolute certainty that Ambassador Rice advanced that narrative over and over again on network TV. We also KNOW with absolute certainty that the White House was the one to choose Ambassador Rice to advance the story. If they provided her with false information then they should be held accountable - not only for the lie but for the damage to Ambassador Rice's reputation. Either way She has lost her credibility.

You keep claiming to "KNOW" things that you have no ability to know. You have no way of knowing what the State Dept knew, as in believed to be true. You certainly have no way of knowing what the CIA "knew, or believed to be true. The White House is a building, it didn't know sh!t. Name names of who you think had all the answers and all the facts, and knew the motivations for the attack, while keeping in mind that the "terrorist" attackers have yet to be caught, interviewed or waterboarded.

Prove what you "know" or STFU.

of course the GOP are going to block Rice's nomination.....that is what they do, block, filibuster, obstruct..deny deny deny.........no no no..............the GOP are absolutely worthless as functioning representatives as they DO NOTHING....

                that is what they do...NOTHING!!!!

Why are we not firing them for dereliction of duty, for being traitors to the recovery of our nation's economy and our people needs?...............they scream impeach the President....

well, I think they should all be impeached for what they have refused to do in the last 4 years.......they have used their offices, their staff, their good and services that the American people pay for in order for them to conduct the peoples business and they use it all to further their own party agenda without a second thought as to their obligations as paid representatives.............lets impeach the GOP!!!!

Enough of this wasting of tax payer dollars and the power the public grants these public servants to work in the best interest of the American people..............the GOP are NOT working in the best interest of the American people and should all be fired immediately and replaced with persons willing to work on behalf of ALL Americans and not on behalf of their own political party agenda.

Republicans need to go...............they have stagnated the workings in Washington DC and they have done everything in their power to keep our economy in the crapper just to make the President look bad...to make people turn on him....which is what Republicans do......................

republicans pit Americans against Americans..............if that is not traitorous I don't know what is.

                FIRE ALL REPUBLICANS!!!!!!

CLEAN HOUSE ALREADY SO WE CAN GET THINGS WORKING IN WASHINGTON DC AND GET THIS COUNTRY GOING AGAIN!!!!!

WE SHOULD ALL SHUN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.......WORK TO ABOLISH IT.............SUE IT..............GATHER PETITION SIGNATURES FOR IMPEACHMENT OF REPUBLICAN PARTY MEMBERS WHO CAN BE PROVEN TO HAVE WORKED AGAINST THE NATIONS RECOVERY.................IT IS TIME WE STARTED HOLDING THESE LYING TRAITORS TO TASK AND MAKE THEM EXPLAIN THEIR ACTIONS, THEIR VOTES AGAINST HELPING THE NATIONS PEOPLE, THEIR LIES, THEIR REASONS FOR ACCUSATIONS UNFOUNDED....IT IS TIME TO MAKE THESE PEOPLE EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS THAT THEY HAVE DONE FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS AND WHY WE SHOULD LET THEY KEEP REPRESENTING ANYONE...........

and I would like to know if Paul Ryan was so surprised that he and Romney lost why did he continue to campaign for his seat in the house..............another lie.............

I am so sick of republican behavior and incendiary rhetoric and lies...........what the heck do they think they are doing?..............time for McCain to retire already..........he has managed to trash what little reputation he had remaining and is now just embarrassing himself..........

the American public deserves better representatives than the people of the GOP..............

the GOP is a big waste of money..........a real addition to our deficit.........let us start reducing the deficit by getting rid of these dead beats and get folks in there who will work and move this country forward...

why we put up with these ingrates for one more second is beyond me............lets investigate them and show through their voting records and their recorded interviews just how traitorous they are and then get rid of them...by the book..........and never let them back into public office.

                GET RID OF THE GOP!!!!

Unfortunately Amy, nothing counts for anything with the tea bags. The good news is the more that Americans see the obstructionism in congress the more apt the Democrats are going to have a majority in both houses from 2014 and beyond. What Harry Reed has to do is make them really filibuster, make them speak. The tea bags are going to be sorry about obstructing American values and trying to replace them with their own.

Wow... Greed Only Party Obstructionism? Who would have thunk it?

                  Didn't they learn anything?

I've met both McCain and Graham, at political rallies in '08 No formal introductions, mind you, but close enough for them to try to shake hands.

McCain struck me as a doddering, disoriented old man. His handlers had to practically lead him by the hand. I realize he's a war hero, former POW, did time in the Hanoi Hilton, and was, by all accounts, once a very intelligent, thoughtful individual. If, four years ago, he was clearly disoriented, stammering, and appeared unsure of where he was, what makes anyone think he's not much more of that four years later?

Graham, on the other hand, is so effeminate that he actually creeps me out. He's full of "bless your hearts" and "God bless Americas" and how he served in the reserves before DADT is totally beyond comprehension. How someone like him even remains in office is mind-boggling. He's no better than his old mentor, Strom "The Racist Rapist from Edgefield" Thurmond.

Many South Carolinians are among the most ignorant, uneducated, backwoods redneck types you will ever see. Go to a small town in SC. Pick one at random, and you'll clearly see what I mean. There was a photo on a newspaper's website back in 2009 that really said it all. It was a photo of a trailer on a lot with waist high grass, an old pickup truck up on concrete blocks, and a hand painted sign that read "We going to have to paint it and call it the Black House now"

These people are so living in the 19th century, and it's terrifying. The very definition of the word "Conservative" explains it all...

Conservative: [kuhn-sur-vuh-tiv] —adjective, 1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change. 2. an intention to regress to previous or existing conditions without growth, expansion, or progress.

If they were academically or otherwise honest, they would realize that Condaleeza Rice had only one thing going for her when she was appointed Secretary of State: In 1992, former Secretary of State George Shultz, who was a board member of Chevron Corporation, recommended Rice for a spot on the Chevron board. Rice was also appointed to the boards of Transamerica Corporation and Hewlett-Packard. Rice headed Chevron's committee on public policy until she resigned to become Dubya Shrub's National Security Advisor. She also served on the board of directors of Charles Schwab Corporation, RAND, and a couple of other banking institutions.

She had very little experience in foreign relations, with her most notable accomplishment being negotiating successfully a deal between Chevron Oil and the Kazakstan goverment to ship oil.

So they're hypocrites, and they know it, and still do it.

I am so glad that Willard Robme did not win the Presidency. This nation would have gone bankrupt, and everything would have been outsourced to China. We'd have become a thirld-world nation before the end of his term.

Write your Congresscritters. DEMAND that they stop obstructing the President of the United States. DEMAND that they stop acting in a treasonous, traitorous and unpatriotic manner, and that they quit the partisan bickering and posturing or you will do everything "in your power" to work for their opponents in the next election.

We are not their people. They are our respresentatives. They should listen to us, not the other way around.

And just what exactly, is wrong with Sue Rice becoming Secretary of State? She is fully qualified, if her service as Ambassador to The U.N. is any indication. Working with that Body has been referred to, in the past as, "trying to herd cats!" If only her job performance is an issue, then what is all the bruhaha? Oh, wait, these Senators think that she lied to the American People, at the behest of the White House, don't they? Was THEIR Intelligence any better? She was only repeating what the C.I.A. briefing stated! NO ONE, had any REAL Intel. on what had actually happened yet! But these people are determined to try to create a scandal, whether one exsists or not. Same ol', same ol', from the Party of "NO", and yet, no-one protested, (at least not LOUDLY), when Dubya tried to nominate his cleaning lady, to The Supreme Court!! Anyone remember Harriet Myers? I now find that I have lost all respect for two men who failed to hold Condie Rice responsible for remarks she made concerning WMD in Iraq but now want to hold Susan Rice responsible. Interesting. They rail about the deaths at Benghazi but seem to have forgotten the death toll in Iraq. Sadly, they might be showing signs of senility!

Or you could ask John about how his father who sold the surviving sailors of the USS Liberty, down the river at the hearings he conducted after the incident. The USS Liberty was almost sunk by the Israelis during the 1967 war, 50 of our sailors were killed and many more were wounded. John's father, Adm. McCain helped big time in covering the incident up, and no justice for our sailors.

                  Illusions:

So I was skimming through the CNN site's opinion section and a comment from a right wing poster struck me. He said that the last president to win by universal acclamation was Dwight Eisenhower who won because unemployment was below 1% and everyone had a home, two cars and a boat.

Well, as someone who is sort of knowledgeable about fiscal history, I was immediately sort of flummoxed by this. After all, the largest single quarter contraction of the U.S. economy in the twentieth century post-depression was in 1958.

Here's a snapshot of the unemployment situation during the Eisenhower presidency:

As you can see, following the boom years right after the end of WWII, the unemployment situation actually increased by 255% at its peak during the Eisenhower presidency. In fact, peak unemployment during the Eisenhower presidency was not all that far below where it stands right now. Basically, if you assign blame to presidential policies to the unemployment situation, Eisenhower inherited a pretty spectacular employment situation, oversaw its complete disintegration, and then had a mild rally that started to crumble again at the very end of his presidency.

                  So why bring this up?

Well, because it speaks to something that the right wing does and does pretty consistently. They paint a picture for themselves of a time that they think was better and, whether it has any basis in reality or not, they just assert something to make it sound even better. It doesn't matter to them whether the exact opposite was true. Reagan was a fiscal conservative. He inherited 14% unemployment following Jimmy Carter and it was under 4% by 1981. He did nothing but cut taxes.

And I think their scholars allowed them to get away with this for so long, it actually fed into what happened during this election. They so stubbornly rewrote the past for themselves for so long that they thought they could just rewrite the present and make it a reality also. All of the polls are skewed. Republican early voter turnout in Ohio is higher than Democratic early voter turnout. Romney is going to win in a landslide.

In the end, you can only cling to your illusions for so long before reality asserts itself again.

Michael Thomspon, thank you for doing the research and posting the results. The conservative bubble of untruths seems to have existed for many decades.

I do remember that Reagan was NOT the hero of republicans when he was elected. In fact, many didn't like him and many more were glad to see him leave office as were democrats but that didn't stop the GOP from turning Reagan into a mythological hero, trying to rename airports, highways after him, trying to erect monuments in every state of the union to honor him. The GOP successfully repackaged Reagan into their hero but in the process, they lost the reality that was Reagan but then, that suits their alternate reality universe.

                  Michael Thompson, Charlotte, NC

I'll admit I'm an admirer of Eisenhower and he was the first I was old enough to vote for.

There is no denying the numbers you present. However, what I saw back then was not that Eisenhower got it wrong, but the the President is not a Dictator. Forces beyond his control, very evident in this time as always, began what can be seen as our downfall.

I went on to vote for Reagan thinking an ex Union Boss might have the chops for the job but as I began to see the falacy of the trickle down system, I did not vote for him again.

I voted for Clinton who went on to do something terrible when he signed off on the end of Glass/Speagal.

My point is that Eisenhower can't be compared to presidents that took part in the demise of our economy. All else aside about him, he did warn us of the great danger within, which is the Military Industrial Complex that exists not for defense, but for eternal war.

@Michael Thompson,Charlotte, N.C. #4: You are absolutely correct. Ike's 2ed term was an economic nightmare. One real problem occurred when He gave in to republican cohorts demands to balance the budget above all other things. By the time of the JFK election in 1960 many industrialized cities in the northeast and midwest were serving the unemployed and their families with "Soup Kitchens". Thank you for your most accurate post. Regards

I think you are right, Michael. The right has a picture in its mind and isn't going to let the actual facts get in the way. Problem is that that picture is wrong most of the time and even if it wasn't wrong, you just can't go back. Thanks for sharing this information.

Mr. Thompson, you hit the nail right on the head.

The Greedy Obstructionist Party are masters of propaganda, of promoting that they are the only ones who are patriotic, how they are the "Defenders of America!" and most importantly, misleading and obfuscating the populace on how they only want to lower their taxes!

Here are a few other things to consider:

The Greedy Obstructionist Party loves to sling the term "Liberal" around as if it were a bad thing. Oh my, the terrible, horrible Liberals are going to come and regulate you into the ground, raise your taxes and weaken your country! Eek, the sky is falling!

What they don't seem to know or care is, what the term actually means:

                  1) Favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

                  2) Advocating measures of progressive political reform.

                  3) Favorable to concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

                  4) Favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression.

They clearly do not realize that to be a "Liberal" means that one has the best interests of one's nation in mind, apart from those who wish a "return to the past, those who wish for regression or return to previous conditions, and opposition to innovation, advancement, and progressive policy"?

The Greedy Obstructionist Party doesn't want anything but a class of the wealthy who can buy their offices for them, and to make the rest of us poor, disenfranchised, unable to effect change, and incapable of standing up against the moneyed wealthy. They want a return to the early 19th Century, when only the wealthy could do everything and anything. They are today's "Robber Barons" All they want is a Plutocracy.

When you have to break your back from sunup to sundown, you have no time whatsoever to do anything except worry about feeding your family. You can't protest them, you can't group together to vote them out of office. You're powerless... Alexis de Tocqueville said it best: "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money." And if an entire class of people have no extra money at all to buy things other than the barest necessities, that impacts the economy far more than one billionaire buying or not buying a new yacht or jet.

Over the last 30 years, we have seen an immense shift of wealth from the middle class to the top few. One fact: take the ratio of the richest in America compared to the average of the middle class and you find that the wealthy have over 25 times more wealth than do the average of the middle class. They are 2,500% wealthier than they were in 1980. The middle class has remained stagnant. This is what the Greed Only Party does. They do not realize or care that the economic engine of this nation is, was, and always will be the Middle Class. The periods in history where the economy of the United States was at its strongest, were all the ones where the Middle Class was at its zenith of strength and eoncomif security.

For the third consecutive year, the rich got richer. In the 24th annual edition of The Forbes 400, the collective net worth of the nation's wealthiest climbed $125 billion, to $1.13 trillion. All but 26 people on that roster are billionaires. Surging real estate and oil prices drove up several fortunes and helped pave the way for 33 new names on the list.

                  Some other things to consider...

These are examples of political manipulation, as applied by a certain political ideology:

                  1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -

Certain political groups tend to make constant use of patriotic mottoes, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. To oppose the political power that utilizes these symbols is to be labeled subversive, unpatriotic, and treasonous.

                  2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -

Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

                  3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause -

The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

                  4. Supremacy of the Military -

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda i s neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

                  5. Rampant Sexism -

Governments consisting of certain political groups tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under these types of governments, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy to strip the civil rights of homosexuals. Reproductive choice, female pay-equality, women's rights, and other issues important to women are frequently opposed, such as abortion in the case of rape or incest.

                  6. Controlled Mass Media -

Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common. Media outlets controlled by these certain groups are often misleading in their publications or broadcasts, with a slant that is intentionally designed to propagandize and manipulate the population

                  7. Obsession with National Security -

Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

                  8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -

Governments in nations led by these certain ideologies tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. They make claims such as "We're religious, we support prayer! The other guys want to tell you that you can't pray."

                  9. Corporate Power is Protected -

The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. Taxes for corporations are frequently reduced or in some cases eliminated, and corporations are often granted rights that individual citizens were intended to enjoy. In other cases, the right of Eminent Domain is abused, disguised as being intended for the "public good"

                  10. Labor Power is Suppressed -

Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

                  11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -

Nations dominated by certain political ideologies tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

                  12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -

Under the leadership of certain political ideologies, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in these nations.

                  13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -

Certain political ideologies that are in power, almost always consist of groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

                  14. Fraudulent Elections -

Sometimes elections are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even media assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Certain political ideologies also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

                  Any of this sound familiar?

All fourteen of these are examples of the principles of Fascist governments.

Note the eerie similarity to the principles of the Greedy Obstructionist Party:

                  One last thought:

The GOP only wants to do one thing: Divide us ideologically by creating a target on which to blame all problems: The other party. They use hateful labels designed to make you believe the Democrats are bad. They attack from behind the shield of patriotism, they have no empathy for the common man, and they state that the desire to see that everyone has a chance is labeled "welfare mob mentality".

The GOP is only interested telling you who is to blame for your problems, and making you afraid of those problems. That’s how they win elections. They gather together a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, or they pander to the uneducated, hard-working lower classes, and they talk to them about family, morality, and American values. They don’t offer any real solutions, because they don’t have any to offer. They say whatever they think their audience wants to hear, so that they can garner a little bit of local support. They make comments designed to take advantage of groupthink, mob mentality, and social proof, to manipulate elections. They badmouth the other guy. They say that he's "destroying America" without giving ANY evidence or examples of it whatsoever, and they manipulate the facts to suit whatever it is that they're saying at the moment. They tell half-truths, they spread rumours, and they try to convince the population that they're just a regular guy, when none of them know what it is like to walk into a grocery store knowing that they cannot spend more than $50, else they wouldn't be able to pay their electric bill.

That, my fellow citizens, is what the GOP wants to do to you. Bribe you with your own money, separate you from one another by blaming someone else for your problems that they created, and disempower you by making you irrelevant. You think that they care a bit about who gets a tax break, if that person can’t donate to their campaign coffers? They’re making a POLITICAL issue out of NOT giving a tax break to AVERAGE CITIZENS. Who do you think will suffer if they get their way? Certainly not the fat cats who wouldn’t miss that little cut. If you honestly believe that your fellow citizens don’t deserve your help, then you are living in the wrong country.

He inherited 14% unemployment following Jimmy Carter and it was under 4% by 1981.

I agree with you on every thing except this one point on unemployment. Regan Inherited an unemployment rate of 7.1. It went up to 9.7 and then retreated to 5.5 by the time he left office.

The reason for the improved economy was not his tax cuts, it was the increased defense spending. He went wild spending money on every thing from star wars space defense to reactivating old battle ships; one of which I served on, and had been deactivated in 1958. The only problem with his spending was; he didn't pay for anything and it ballooned the national debt. The Regan era mismanagement can be directly attributed to today's national financial problems. I don't know why no one will call the right on this when they start crowing about Ronald Regan. His name was mentioned no less that 100 times during the republican debates.

It would be one thing if they had serious doubts about Susan Rice's qualifications, they would be doing their job to oppose her, but given the fact she has more experience and more success than Condi Rice, when she was confirmed as Bush's Secretary of State, it's pretty obvious they are just trying to be jerks.

No matter who you are, Republican or Democrat, we didn't send people to Congress, just to be jerks. I don't understand why Republicans have decided to destroy their Party, on purpose.

The Obama administration requested $300 million more for additional security at our embassies, and the House GOP roundly rejected the request. That's the true shame behind Benghazi. Now they dare castigate Susan Rice??

Begin now to educate families & friends about the critical importance of voting in primaries, when who gets to run for office is determined. So long as we leave primaries to the most ideologically rigid among us, Congress will reflect ourselves, a nation bitterly divided even by lifestyle.

Mr. Dangerfield is at best inaccurate when he says an opposition party is necessary to our process. That's true in a parliamentary setting, as in England, where obstruction works to keep the party in power in check. IT DOES NOT WORK in our own system, which requires compromise, the essence of democracy, for the nation to move at all.

McCain has never recovered from losing in 2008--he says Rice is "not too bright," but his running mate of choice?? --Palin! A Rhodes scholar vs. a gal who needed 5 schools and who knows how many years just to get a bachelor's degree, and still thinks Paul Revere made his midnight ride to warn the English--

As someone else commented here, Lindsey Graham is creepily always trying to come off as the little mom at the church supper, while oxymoronically spouting the most obscenely hateful rhetoric.

In 2014, we vote all obstructionism out for good.

If I have it right, Harry Reid IS going to modify the filibuster rule in the Senate, and this time he will have the majority to do it. If only The House would change THEIR rules, and actually WORK for more than 2 weeks a month!! But then, "ol' Boner"would actually have to DO something, other than stand in front of T.V. cameras, and critisize the Democrats, the President, the S.O.S., and anyone else he did'nt like, and/or agree with!!

If the filibuster is modified in any way it should reflect the way that the fake filibuster has been employed and abused to great excess by the Republicans. Democrats need to keep score. A fake filibuster should only be able to delay a vote for a week at most.

If Sean Hannity is already running stories about election fraud, then you know that a significant segment of the Right Wing is going to pretend/argue that the president's re-election was not legitimate. This is not healthy for America. This is not patriotic. This segment of the Right Wing has no positive message. Their only interest is regaining power.

Not healthy or patriotic? Here's what Hillary Clinton once said about that: "I am sick and tired of people who call you unpatriotic if you debate this administration’s policies. We are Americans and have the right to participate and debate any administration." Now do you expect us conservatives to just roll over and drink the KoolAid because Obama squeaked by with a victory? Forget it.

Wow - usually you Republicans wait at least a little while before you try and rewrite history. It was not a 'squeak', it was an electoral a$$-kicking.

There were nine 'battleground' states and Pres. Obama won eight of them - and John Kerry got more votes in 2004 than Romney got in 2012.

Debating policies is different than saying the president wasn't legitimately re-elected. If today's conservatives could actually win by discussing policy they wouldn't have to distract with conspiracy theories.

Note: I do actually believe moderate conservatives could win by debating policy...but the party is currently too extreme and there aren't many moderates left.

I hear people on the left say all the time that republicans are too far right wing but never provide what specifically they think is so extreme.

@Tnsevol#6.2: Actually good friend there were 9 designated battleground states and the President ran the table on 'em. Wi., Iowa, Co., NV., OH., Va., N.H., Mi., and Fl. From the beginning N.C. was thought to be safely GOP. Later It began leaning back and forth, and while some called it a "toss up" it probably never really was. Best regards

That's a lose, lose for Republicans. The only verified cases of election fraud in this election were by Republicans. That doesn't even count their appalling voter suppression efforts in Ohio,Florida, etc. And the still developing scandal in Arizona. All in Republican dominated states. I'd say to Hannity,go ahead bring it on,make my day.

Can we at least have a REAL filibuster if there is to be one?

Today, I heard John McCain say Susan Rice was unintelligent, for not recognizing that the attack on the Libyan embassy was not the same kind of protest we saw all across the globe, in response to the movie defaming the Muslim's Prophet.

Somehow, Susan Rice was supposed to go against the intelligence provided to her by the CIA and declare the attacks had nothing in common with the outrage expressed in Eygpt, Yemen, Austalia, etc. I guess McCain thinks comments made on a Sunday talk show are the best way to judge a future Secretary of State. Maybe because McCain is so good at bloviating on those shows.

Shame on you McCain. Shame on you. Shame on you. Shame on you.

Paul, which article, amendment or clause of the constitution addresses filibuster? Since you won't be able to answer this because filibuster is not addressed in the constitution, how can it be unconstitutional? Which article, amendment or clause does it violate?

Bookem' Danno...congratulations on making Paul's point for him. According to the right (which, judging by your posts, you belong to), if it isn't in the Constitution, it must be unconstitutional. Silly argument, but it's the right's, not mine.

In any event, the current "filibuster" as practiced by the Republicans could more appropriately be called tyranny by the minority.

The Constitutionally mandated "majority" in the Senate is 50 votes -- or 51 if the VP is called in to break a tie.

I could be argued that the standing filibuster that the GOP now has in place raises the "majority" to the 60 votes required for cloture.

That's a pretty radical change in our governance. It almost insures gridlock and is a de facto violation of the Constitution.

Of all the words to employ, "standing", was the worst choice you could have made. We are trying to get people to understand that when the media says that the Republicans "filibustered" a bill, that they are telling the people a LIE. No one "stands" during a fake filibuster. The FAKE filibuster is used by the minority of 41 to keep the majority of 59 Senators from ever getting to vote on a bill which has the majority support. That is not just undemocratic or unrepublican, it is unconstitutional and UnAmerican.

A real filibuster can only delay a majority win on a vote. The fake filibuster lets the minority of 41 defeat the bill, forever. That is just plain wrong. No fake filibuster should last longer than the longest REAL filibuster.

LWNJ, I would consider my self a conservative, yes.

Paul does not have a point because the constitution does not address filibuster. I asked what specifically in the senate rules are unconstitutional and against what article, amendment or clause. If he cannot answer what makes the current filibuster rules (long ago adopted by the Senate) unconstitutional, why would he state is it uncostitutional. Just because you feel it is, doesn't make it so.

Is it not good that the minority has a voice/say? Without the minority having a say (as is the way of our Republic), we would have never had a single state allow gay marriage, allow blacks and whites to be in the same school, so on and so forth. You think it is a tyranny because you disagree with the other side and are not willing to listen.

                          #7.10 - Wed Nov 14, 2012 3:46 PM EST

Imvalid argument - or are you saying that anything that is not specifically mentioned in the Constitution is, by inference, constitutional? In any event, the current use of the filibuster by the Republican Party is, if not unconstitutional, undemocratic. Allowing a minority to control the Senate is asinine; using that reasoning, that means that anybody that has at least 41 people to stand with them can prevent the chamber from actually performing their CONSTITUTIONAL function. Having a voice is one thing, holding the country hostage is another. Perhaps you need to look up "representational government". If you feel this is the right way to govern, I suppose you feel that it will be OK if no laws are ever passed, or bills paid, simply because a minority that has at least 41 seats wants to put ideology above country. Well, won't that be terrific.

If Democrats were to do the same thing, I can guarantee that the right would be stomping their feet and throwing tantrums.

WTF is wrong with you people? STOP USING the word STAND when you are talking about the FAKE filibuster. Nobody is "standing" during a fake filibuster. Nobody is "standing" with anybody during a fake filibuster. Use a different phrase. Stop stepping in their TRAP.

The minority has a voice, it is suppose to be used in a REAL filibuster, where they SPEAK about the bill that they think should be defeated. The FAKE filibuster is a SILENT vote by the 41 Senator minority to disallow discussion or a vote on a bill. If the minority wants to use its voice, it needs to speak on the issue and try to change peoples' minds. After a cloture vote they get another 30 hours of DEBATE on the subject, that again is whgere they get to use their minority voice.

You are trying to not understand this Danno.

I think it is slightly possible that you read "stand" and take it literally. "Stand" has many meanings, only one of which is to get on one's feet and assume an erect posture.

Look, we are on the same side here. No sh!t "stand" has many meanings. That is exactly why it is the WRONG word to use when discussing the FAKE filibuster. It confuses the people who don't realize that a Fake filibuster is different from a real filibuster. If they can't keep that straight, your use of the wrong word for the subject will let them continue to believe that someone is "standing" with anyone during a fake filibuster which is misreported as a "filibuster" by the media and you.

No, LWNJ, it is not an invalid argument. In order to state that something is unconstitutional, you must tell what part of the constitution is being violated.

How did you feel about the filibuster in 2000 - 2006? I wonder if you thought it was undemocratic the way democrats used it?

Now, I agree with your premise that the current rules regarding filibuster are bad. At the same time, the minority should have a voice and not be bowled over by the majority, would you agree?

                            #7.15 - Wed Nov 14, 2012 4:44 PM EST

Why do you keep refering to it as the filibuster when we are not talking about the filibuster, we are discussing the FAKE filibuster? Are you dense?

The democrats didn't use the filibuster between 2000 and 2006, the used the Rule 22 FAKE filibuster.

Use of the FAKE filibuster is wrong and UNconstitutional no matter who is using it. The fake filibuster never should have been allowed to be a rule of the Senate.

                            Bookem: Rules of the Senate.

                            Rule 22
The filibuster is related to "cloture," a rule adopted almost 100 years ago requiring a two-thirds vote. At times this was two-thirds of those voting; for a limited time, it was two-thirds of membership.

In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes needed to invoke cloture to three-fifths (60) of Senate membership. At the same time, they made the filibuster "invisible" by requiring only that 41 Senators state that they intend to filibuster; critics say this makes the modern filibuster "painless."

                              #7.17 - Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:38 PM EST

"painless" for the minority because they don't have to stand up and speak "endlessly", and painless for the majority because they aren't required to be in attendance or on property for any quorum calls. That is why it is FAKE. No one has any reason to think about changing their vote and breaking the 41-59 stalemate because the bill gets shelved and everyone gets to go home, or fake filibuster the next bill and then go home. During a REAL filibuster no one gets to go back to their house or district, and no other Senate business may take place even after a cloture vote to end the real filibuster they must then have 30 hours of DEBATE on the bill. This is not the case with the FAKE filibuster.

It is time to vote out long term GOP politicians like McCain, Graham, McConnell for starters.

When they start to dwell on issues that they are accessory to, like not approving budgets to increase security in our embassies and consulates, then try to witch hunt for the person to blame, it is time for them to go. They are no longer serving the true interest of the american people.

If they do not like the $300M budget, they could at least reduce it to compromise.

It is time to have term limits so we can have fresh ideas, get rid of in-effective politicians who overtime gets so comfortable with their position, they fail to realize their true job of governing for the best interest of the American people.

Hell yes the GOP will block it. She would only be a sheep mouthpiece for Obama and tell us what he wants us to hear.

WAAAAA! We lost the election and we're going to throw tantrums for four more years! WAAAA!

By the way, when do you think the Republican leaders in Congress should be indicted? They got the same information as Obama. Or maybe you think they are out to get you, too.

Talktothehand... You sound exactly like you did before the disastrously effemenate showing by the Republican party in the last election... I thought all chimps were trainable to a degree, but I guess they do need to be shown over and over before they really "get it".

I'll be watching the bookstands for your upcoming epic "Clinging to Bengazi".

Talk to the Hand: You do realize the Obama administration asked for $300 million in additional security for our embassies and your teabaggin' House rejected the request? That's the true shame of Banghazi.

Here's what Ms. Rice told the news. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/week-transcript-us-ambassador-united-nations-susan-rice/story?id=17240933#.UH7e22k-sww

Again this is a case of certain people with a political agenda misrepresenting or "mis-remembering" what she said to make thier own political points.

An excellent discussion of the President's comments on this event and on Ms. Rice's can be found at: http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2012/10/17/if_you_ignore_what_he_said_obama_never_said_the_libya_attack_was_terrorism.html

Long story short, the positions advocated by the Senators McCain and Graham is bunk.

Thank you for the link, Michael. I was wondering if someone would post exactly what Susan Rice said, that makes McCain and Graham think she is unintelligent and untrustworthy:

We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people came to the embassy to -- or to the consulate, rather, to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo. And then as that unfolded, it seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons, weapons that as you know in -- in the wake of the revolution in Libya are -- are quite common and accessible. And it then evolved from there.

We'll wait to see exactly what the investigation finally confirms, but that's the best information we have at present.

I don't for a minute believe that Johnny and Lindsay think Ms Rice is unintelligent or untrustworthy. I think they are Republicans so it is therefore in their nature to project fears regarding themselves onto others and to discount a woman first unless of course you think you might elevate yourself by using her.

Pretty standard really. Dusty old Fops in their death throes.

Harry Reid and President Obama should force the "Sore Loser" John McCain still fighting the 2008 Election, and "Me Too" Lindsay Graham, and Ms. Ayotte to FILLIBUSTER Rice's Nomination.

If any group was wrong about Benhazi it was the intelligence agencies and if these agencies provided Bush with poor info. about Iraq as he said then it is time to dismantle these agencies and rebuild or not rebuild from the ground up.

Susan Rice would be the best person for the job. With her credentials of being a U.N. Ambassador she will have connections at the U.N. that will give America better footing when dealing with foreign relations.

Its also good to have someone as the SoS who tell the president what is going on from personal experience so that situations can be dealt with in a more timely manner.

Having Susan Rice as the SoS could also ease tensions in the Middle East for the simple fact that she will have a better understanding of what takes place at the U.N.

The GOP needs to back off or they are going to get dumped upon by America again.

America is moving away from the "White Right is Right." to a government that is intelligent and thinks and conducts itself based upon sensibility and not its emotions.

The only reason that the GOP doesn't like Rice is because she is a woman. Her credentials more than fit the billet for her position.

It seems like the GOP hasn't lost step with its blame everything on President Obama when we all know the problems started with the last GOP administrations time in office.

If the GOP wants to continue to play the blame game because thats all they can do then America will continue to play the hammer game and will play Whack-A-Mole with them every time they spout off.

Just the same? Are you people stupid? They aren't even close to being the same thing.

No one should want to be rid of the REAL filibuster, it is an honorable tool of the minority in the Senate to try to change public opinion on a bill that they think is bad legislation. A REAL filibuster can only temporarily delay a simple majority vote from winning passage of a bill.

The Fake filibuster is dishonorable. It allows the minority of 41 Senators to stop a bill which has 59 senators supporting it from EVER getting to vote on the bill. That is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

A FAKE filibuster allows the MINORITY of 41 to stop a bill from coming up for a simple majority vote forever. A delay is one thing, forever is giving too much power to the minority.

The FAKE filibuster has nothing in common with the real filibuster, except that you dimwits are fooled by the name.

Rice was informing us of the information provided by the CIA. This is information based on what the CIA believes happened upon first examination of the incident. McClain trust and admires Petraeus the director of the CIA, the same CIA that supplied Rice with the information. But he does not trust Rice? So in essence they are saying Rice should not have relied upon the information provided by the CIA. They are saying Rice should have disregarded the CIA's information and come to her conclusions? Rice should have disregarded the chain of command, the CIA, the State Department and the White House? Malarkey!!! Here we go again.

She stated what information she was told was true by Petraeus' CIA. The CIA was spreading a cover story while they tried to mop up their mess in Benghazi. If you believe in our National security, you have to understand that the CIA LIES and enlists others to LIE for them, in order to fix what they can of their mistakes. Prove to anyone with more than half a brain, that Susan Rice knew that what she reported was untrue, and I'll believe you're not a closet racist.

Susan Rice is certainly qualified to hold the job of SofState.

Im sure she did not conduct the investigation that led to her delivering a misleading message to the Sunday talk shows after the attack on our embassy. She was simple deliving the information she was given, obviously it was wrong, but I doubt she knew that at the time.

Colin Powell with similar misleading information declared there were WMD in Iraq.

In both these cases they were simple delivering the information they were given.

That's OK, boys. With all the blocking practice you've had, I'm sure the NFL scouts will be all over you after you become available in 2014. You won't be unemployed for long, and you won't even notice the concussions.

Senator McCain, you can't keep going if you don't take your Alzheimers medication on a regular basis. It causes you to get confused very easily, and then start spewing who knows what. It is seriously hurting you and your party, who just suffered a humiliating defeat in the presidential race. Someone in the GOP needs to take Senator McCain aside and quietly explain this to him, as at one time he was a well respected war hero, but unfortunately, like General Petraeus, it is all being forgotten as time goes by and he continues his rants. I wish you good luck Senator and hope you will consider resigning while you still have a shred of respect and decency.

                                          Actually, I don't think it's McCain that has Alzheimer's, it's Biden.
