Pelosi to remain as Democratic leader

Updated 10:42 a.m. - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told fellow House Democrats today that she will run to keep her leadership position, likely extending her tenure as Democratic leader for another two years.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2102, with newly elected Democratic House members.

"I have made a decision to submit my name to my colleagues to once again serve as the House Democratic leader," Pelosi said Wednesday at a press conference following a meeting with fellow Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

On the 10th anniversary of her election as Democratic leader, Pelosi said her colleagues had made their desire for her to remain as leader "very clear." There had been mounting speculation that the 72-year-old California Democrat might step aside and yield to younger figures in the party.

Pelosi served two terms as speaker of the House, the first woman to ever hold that role, from 2007-2011, during which time she oversaw House passage of President Barack Obama's landmark health reform law. She has also taken a special interest in advancing legislation intended to address the effects of climate change, prompting a vote on a "cap-and-trade" bill in 2009 which eventually stalled in the Senate.

Republicans seemed almost giddy about the announcement.

"There is no better person to preside over the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in history than the woman who is solely responsible for relegating it to a prolonged minority status," said Paul Lindsay, the communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

As part of her decision to stay aboard, Pelosi said that New York Rep. Steve Israel had agreed to serve a second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Israel helped Democrats pick up seats in the most recent election.

Pelosi's decision also means the top leadership in the House would presumably remain the same for the next two years:

-- John Boehner as speaker

-- Eric Cantor as majority leader

-- Pelosi as minority leader

-- Steny Hoyer as minority whip.

What made anyone think she would step down. Number one she is not finished helping Obama and Reed destroy this country, but also, she is not giving up making millions more from us. Rick-881466 if Obamacare is so great, please tell me why Congress, the Senate, Union workers and Muslims don't have to have it. They get to keep or get the good insurance. If it is not good enough for them it is not good enough for anyone. Also you can't participate in negotiations if you can't get passed the closed, locked doors, no Obamacare is all on the Godless Dems. Claim it and own it. In four years we have become a weak nation, just like the weak administation we have.

Joyce, tell me why Canada has nationwide heath care? Why does Australia? Why did ROMNEY introduce it in Mass? Tell me why its a bad thing?

Godless Dems? No, we adhere to the United States Consitution. Are you against Thomas Jefferson? One of our founding fathers? Keep your religion out of our government or we will PUSH to tax those churches.

“Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself. Erecting the 'wall of separation between church and state,' therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society.”

What would you expect from the democraps but to elect a piece of garbage. She goes well with the other trash calling themselves democraps. our country is doomed to become a place where the leeches determine the government and countries like kenya and belgium are viewed as superior to what was once the greatest nation in the world. We now have a dictator, a senile moron behind him, a group of SS we call the senate, a bunch of pansies called republicans and a supreme court made up of too many libs who want to rid us of our great Constitution. Well, I guess that more than 50% will soon be dependent upon the government to be their sugar daddy.

Good that guarantees the GOP to keep the House in 2014. The Democrats can now make public their San Francisco Democratic slogan, "kill the unborn and unwanted, and marry the unnatural."

I am a life long Democrat:

Keeping Nancy "PeLoosi" is a sign that once again my party shoots itself in the foot.

She is to the extreme left as the Tea Party is to the extreme right. Compromise and govern for all the people is not in their vocabulary.

She has done more harm to the Democratic party image...she is the Achilles Hill to Obama's next 4 years.

It's hard to believe she was even elected to public office, let alone continue in such a leadership position. Her appearance says it all - arrogant, self absorbed and self righteous.

It was democratic leadership that got rid of Bin Laden, put forth universal health care, got the economy going by saving the auto industry, brought our troops back from Iraq and ended the war that put us into debt, will cease pandering to the wealthy by not renewing the Bush tax cuts and restoring the middle class, revamped FEMA to get help to the Sandy victims, it is the democratic leadership that could restore jobs, create jobs, fix the infrastructure and lots more but for the party of obstructionism causing the do nothing policies of congress. Two long terms of George Bush and his greedy cronies made fortunes and ruined this country both in reputation and fiscal responsibility. It will take two or three terms of democratic leadership to make it right again.

Is the House suppose to blindly rubber stamp any legislation that Emperor Obama wants to pass? If that is the case then that sounds a bit more like ancient Rome legislature.

I think the House should make the POTUS bend to them. The POTUS does not have to lie to the people anymore by promising more welfare benefits and breaking campaign promises. He has already been elected. It is time to do the right thing and break all the fool hearted promises he made and slash entitlements and military spending to right the ship.

I did not vote for Obama either time, but he will change my impressions of him if he would completely abandon his foreign tax and spend world view.

This is a mistake, and this is coming from an independent voter that supported President Obama. I as a lot of other perceive the congress and senate as the real problems and as such they should get new leadership. I would like to see Pelosi, Boehner,McConnel and Reid all step aside for new leaders to take over. i just feel they have to much baggage to get us out of the gridlock we are in.

Love all the trash talk from conservatives. Guess this means that she was very effective at her job and they are VERY, VERY afraid that in two years she will again be MAJORITY Leader. If she was not so effective, she'd be just another Dem in the House that the conservatives hate simply because they are the other party.

My opinion is that the Democrats have little to celebrate. Our so-called Democratic Leaders are coming up short on fully supporting the President and acting in the best interest of the people they are supposed to be serving. They (Democratic leaders) make a lot of money to act in the best interest of the people they serve but I for one am not feeling the love. This distance will continue unless we as voters get off our azz, stay on top of the issues and hold our politicians accountable EVERY DAY. Let's not wait until it's time to vote again.....they can do a lot of damage before that time.

What a snatch. The only reason they let her stay is because she promised to try again to get the media to call Bush's tax cuts the "Obama middle class tax cuts." Anyone remember that? Her attempt to rewrite history? She has nothing going for her except her willingness to lie for and suck up to the president.

Pelosi is another CA politician who's own state is asking for 16 billion dollar bailout. I am sick of subsidizing CA when they wont even let any offshore drilling happen there. What is our return from CA. A pukey Congressman named Pelosi, liberal Hollywood elites that tell us how to vote, and a completely overun entitlement state.

Why did we ever steal it from the Mexicans? In CA you cant even open a business without pulling 9,000 permits.
