Pelosi to remain as Democratic leader

Updated 10:42 a.m. - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told fellow House Democrats today that she will run to keep her leadership position, likely extending her tenure as Democratic leader for another two years.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2102, with newly elected Democratic House members.

"I have made a decision to submit my name to my colleagues to once again serve as the House Democratic leader," Pelosi said Wednesday at a press conference following a meeting with fellow Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

On the 10th anniversary of her election as Democratic leader, Pelosi said her colleagues had made their desire for her to remain as leader "very clear." There had been mounting speculation that the 72-year-old California Democrat might step aside and yield to younger figures in the party.

Pelosi served two terms as speaker of the House, the first woman to ever hold that role, from 2007-2011, during which time she oversaw House passage of President Barack Obama's landmark health reform law. She has also taken a special interest in advancing legislation intended to address the effects of climate change, prompting a vote on a "cap-and-trade" bill in 2009 which eventually stalled in the Senate.

Republicans seemed almost giddy about the announcement.

"There is no better person to preside over the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in history than the woman who is solely responsible for relegating it to a prolonged minority status," said Paul Lindsay, the communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

As part of her decision to stay aboard, Pelosi said that New York Rep. Steve Israel had agreed to serve a second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Israel helped Democrats pick up seats in the most recent election.

Pelosi's decision also means the top leadership in the House would presumably remain the same for the next two years:

-- John Boehner as speaker

-- Eric Cantor as majority leader

-- Pelosi as minority leader

-- Steny Hoyer as minority whip.

"Pelosi to remain as Democratic leader"

So much for draining the swamp. The putrid stench just got a little stronger.

Pelosi actually met with our city council right after the porkulus bill...she was asked to try and get funding for a local water treatment project....she said "Is that all you need, no problem." Never heard from her again. Typical politician.

The bankrupt state of California comes through again - how is it we let these people have so many electoral votes and decide how the rest of us are going to live. Time for a huge change with our voting system.

boy short memories-- blame Arnold for bankrupting California-- He really didn't do much for the state in his tenure as "Governator" , California now is at the bottom of many measures of quality of life, as public funding for the most basic services are slashed and more tax breaks are given to multi-national corporations.

Those darn republicans, Why can't they understand that rich folks need to pay more taxes. Not only that, they shold put a 50% surtax on rich people that really don't contribute. You know maybe like the entertainment business. Would'nt that bring in a lot of money. Next, they should demand that everyone should pay something, we all know you can't walk into a store and take something without paying, unless you are stealing. Finally, they should help defeat earned income credit? What part of everyone paying their fair share is that. Lets, see, you make 30,000, you have threee dependents, not only do you not pay income tax, you get a big fat check. When did income tax become walfare?

Nancy, thank you for being so magnanimous to permit us to hold you in such an office. So sad to have heard that the gov't jet airliner you once demanded had to be taken away. Obviously, someone didn't appreciate you having your own private airliner to fly you from coast to coast at will. Then again, these are simple matters you should not bother yourself with. Republicans don't fear her, being that she's never had an original thought while in office. Oh well, like the recent election her fate will be decided by others.

In this divided country one thing should be clear to BOTH parties; nearly as many people voted for the other guy. That's been true since the 2000 election, but no one's paid attention. Now we have a very real crisis looming on the horizon and this game of fiscal and political brinksmanship has to end. The Democrats need to realize Pelosi is too divisive a figure to put in leadership. She comes from THE MOST Liberal district in the country - if not the planet - and her personality is just too abrasive. Face it, she's got all the charisma of a doorknob. And she simply refuses to see we cannot "tax the rich" our way out of this mess. The Republicans, meanwhile, have their own knob-headed leadership to contend with. Or should I say ditto-headed? Boehner and McConnell may think they're the leaders of the Republican party but actually it's Rush, Sean and the Koch brothers. Unless they can somehow be convinced that we cannot "tax the working class" out of this mess we are going to go over the so-called fiscal cliff. Not such a bad thing, you say? Why, no it will just show the world the U.S. no longer has political leadership capable of handling our own problems. We can't work together like grown-ups. We can't lead ourselves, let alone the rest of the world. That'll be the end of America's global leadership.

The conservatives can spin all they want, and hate all they want, and rant all they want. The fact remains that Pelosi engineered one of the most prolific and successful legislative Congresses during our nation's history. The Boner's legacy is that he leads one of the least successful legislative bodies, equivalent to the "Do nothing" sessions of 1947-48. Outside of naming some post offices and selling off some excess property, not a hell of a lot of legislative accomplishment. 30+ bills to repeal healh care (with no bills to improve or replace it), major legislation attempts to put the Federal Government in charge of every uterus in the nation, and basically an inability to govern. What a legacy for the GOP.

The facts of Nancy Pelosi's dismal career are clear:

The Democrats used to be a huge 60% party, and ran the House for about 60 years straight up until Newt Gingrich.

The Repubs ran it for the next 12 years.

Then, thanks to Bush and Rummie delaying the surge in Iraq endlessly, and media bias scapegoating Bush and not Mayor Nagin or Gov. Blanco for Katrina, the Democrats swept into power in 2006 in a wave election

The Dems had power in 2007, and they should have had it for a while. The Repubs had it for 12 years, the Dems had it for 42 straight years before that, and another 20 year stretch before that.

Thanks to this pathetic, far left San-Fran-Sicko clown, they lost it in 4 years. 4 years. They lost 63 seats in such a beatdown that it will take 3 to 4 cycles of steady gains every time, with no let ups, to get it back, which looks doubtful.

It's good for Repubs to have her in as the San-Fran-Sicko liberal strawman, and guarantee themselves a good dog to beat every election cycle.

Poor old Steny. Never going to get a shot. By the time she leaves, the rank and file will want someone under 70 to take over.

Please. You have the House? What you have are Repubs who are shatting their pants. They heard America and now know if there is anymore BS obstruction by them its Buh Bye Bozos. You're living in the past. Wake up and smell the future loser

Which basically means.... the GOP doesn't want to compromise on anything, and it has to be there way or the highway. Keep that tone Chesty.. and watch the GOP get CRUSHED in the next election. America has had enough of obstructionism.

                                          America wants and needs compromise.

Yes, we have the House. Whatever far left nonsense you losers dream up, will have to get past the Republicans.

With the Botox B---- signed on for another two years, that means the Republican House control will extend into the forseeable future, barring Democrat voter fraud.

Now its voter fraud LMAO. I love it. But... but... there has to be a reason America chose Obama!!! It cant be because the majority of the country isn't a group of Tea Bagging lunatics... can't it? What other conspiracies do you have up your sleeve? You're so delusional but you make me laugh so thank you.

I don't know if the election was legitimate---Democrats make sure that no one can know, and block any attempts to make elections free of fraud--, it did look going into the election, based on the polls, that Obama had a 50/50 shot, and could get to 280 or so electorally, so it's definitely possible he won.

What was strange was him outperforming the average of all swing state polls at Realclearpolitics in every swing state except 1, and by over 3% in 5 of them. Dems never outperform polls ever, they have a few % more deadbeats who don't show up on election day than reliable Republican types do.

But, barring voter fraud, of the type the Democrats have engaged in since Tammany Hall, the Repubs will run the House the next decade.

More eligible voters stayed away than voted for either bankster cult controlled candidate.

These are verifiable stats and not opinion.

So how, again, did the "majority" of the country vote for Obama?

As my very observant wife said this AM - One very good aspect of Nancy Pelosi staying on as Democratic House leader is that the American people will not have to worry about her being involved in any salacious sex scandals?

One thing all these rabid conservatives overlook is that she is still the Minority Leader.....at least for the next two years. Any legislation or failure to govern is the responsibility of the boner and the GOP. Taxes go up for all? GOP. Debt crisis? GOP. Debt default? GOP. Unless the boner can herd his cats (his caucus) and get some legislating done with actual compromise, he can still push every bit of non important legislation like Obamacare repeal through the House...with little chance of passage in the Senate. Doubt with a rating of under 10% that most conservatives will put up with the GOP's krap after 2014 if they continue to stall and obstruct.

So, when taxes go up for all... and they will, it's not the Presidents plan... it's now the GOP's plan. Classic... typical to refocus the blame...
