Pelosi to remain as Democratic leader

Updated 10:42 a.m. - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told fellow House Democrats today that she will run to keep her leadership position, likely extending her tenure as Democratic leader for another two years.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2102, with newly elected Democratic House members.

"I have made a decision to submit my name to my colleagues to once again serve as the House Democratic leader," Pelosi said Wednesday at a press conference following a meeting with fellow Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

On the 10th anniversary of her election as Democratic leader, Pelosi said her colleagues had made their desire for her to remain as leader "very clear." There had been mounting speculation that the 72-year-old California Democrat might step aside and yield to younger figures in the party.

Pelosi served two terms as speaker of the House, the first woman to ever hold that role, from 2007-2011, during which time she oversaw House passage of President Barack Obama's landmark health reform law. She has also taken a special interest in advancing legislation intended to address the effects of climate change, prompting a vote on a "cap-and-trade" bill in 2009 which eventually stalled in the Senate.

Republicans seemed almost giddy about the announcement.

"There is no better person to preside over the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in history than the woman who is solely responsible for relegating it to a prolonged minority status," said Paul Lindsay, the communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

As part of her decision to stay aboard, Pelosi said that New York Rep. Steve Israel had agreed to serve a second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Israel helped Democrats pick up seats in the most recent election.

Pelosi's decision also means the top leadership in the House would presumably remain the same for the next two years:

-- John Boehner as speaker

-- Eric Cantor as majority leader

-- Pelosi as minority leader

-- Steny Hoyer as minority whip.

This is unfortunate. I'd hoped that Peosi would step aside. Boehner could go too.

They do have the history of what spending decisions and deals brought us to this place. However, I just really question if the same thinking that brought budget and financial policy to this point is capable of finding a pathway out. The battle scars and bitterness they both carry seem unlikely to allow either of them to compromise and make the tough choices it's going to take. IMO - both have lost sight of the well-being and future of the nation in their partisan power plays - just not opimistic that they can put the economy over ego.

Of course she will stay. What else does she have to do? Can't go hang on the beach, she would melt. She's got her billions from insider trading and kickbacks, but its all cash, no business to go run. She still has to arrange her Paylosi payoffs from the desert railway. She still has to run Uncle Leon Poinsettia dismantling the DOD for her and Obama. On top of all that, if she left government, how would she get in front of a camera to show off her new botox and face lifts? It aint exactly like breaking big rocks into little rocks out there on the private jumbo jet either.

Ok, googled my ass off just for you. You are wrong. Nancy Paylosi was identified by an independent non profit as garnering the greatest amount of wealth generation directly linked to her office. And, I aint got time to type about her years with the DNC. Quit spreading your "Google it" crap lines, they aren't working.

Go, no need to be nasty, I stand corrected regarding the non-profit, however, personal wealth she is a piker compared to Issa. So please stop your crap-o-liners, I didn't attack you and there is no need to inflict your misplaced contempt on me. When I am wrong I admit it. Feel better now. I stand by Boehner and his windfall.

Don't really care what the land of Teabagistan think or vocalize, what I do care about is the the House work together on the Peoples business for the good of America. America first and ideologies should be left at the door and to exhorting their constituencies of how wonderful they are. Leave the mean spirited nasty characterizations where it belongs, nothing wrong with opposition to some stances, it is wrong holding the country hostage to party line baloney. Get on with it, move on and work for America. The election is over, Republicans lost, wishing it wasn't so won't change it. Man up and get it done.

That means Steny Hoyer will retain his prestigious position of the person responsible for changing Pelosi's dirty diapers. Pelosi spoke highly of Hoyer and remarked that no-one can lick the problem like Steny.

@steel you have no respect for women-- I'm offended at your comment of her--

You know this all started back in 2010 WHEN Republicans wanted to keep unemployment as HIGH

as possible going into 2012 election in order to defeat Obama. California, had 12% unemployment at that time, and struggled to reduce it without ANY federal help, worsening CALIFORNIA'S already dire budget situation. Some of the highlights of Speaker Pelosi's accomplishments:

            • Strong health care bill with a public option
            • Cap-and-trade climate bill
            • Blueprint for new transportation bill with $50 billion in high speed rail funding
            • Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell
            • Decent (if not great) financial regulation bill

It would be lovely to think that if Nancy stepped aside, then Debbie Wasserman Schultz would just slip in to replace her...But, No, waiting in the wings is the 73 year old Steny Hoyer!! I am happy for Nancy to stay just as long as she would like, Botox or not. She is a very strong woman who fights tirelessly on behalf of those who really need a champion in the House. The Republicans absolutely despise her for that, and their obvious attacks are just all other words for, "She's a B----". I think it is one of her virtues that she makes the wing of the Republican House (which would have been shellacked this time if not for "creative" redistricting) that is represented by the truly ogerous Michele Bachmann..."uncomfortable"! They don't dislike her; they dislike that she has so much power. You go, Girl!!

unreal, Bush wrecked the economy, that's an historical fact that no amount of time will ever change. The Republicans hindered the recovery by filibustering or voting 'no' on every job related bill presented, that's a fact that no amount of spin can change. I think we all realize the only way to get this government to work for the people, is to find common ground (difficult, but possible) there needs to be compromise from both sides. Hopefully, both side will work for the people who elected them. Shut the hard right Teaparty down, shut the far left Liberals down, and get some moderate, middle-ground legislation that can get us out of this mess. Nancy, GO AWAY!! you are not helping this President.

agree with you. Doesn't obama need to put a little bend in his attitude also? Over the last four years, he didn't compromise once. If fact, the first two years, he wasn't aware there were any republicans in office, since he ignored. them. Then after the took over the house, all he did was say how bad the were and would'nt drink his kool aid and wouldn't jump off the cliff with him.
