Pelosi to remain as Democratic leader

Updated 10:42 a.m. - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told fellow House Democrats today that she will run to keep her leadership position, likely extending her tenure as Democratic leader for another two years.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. gestures during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2102, with newly elected Democratic House members.

"I have made a decision to submit my name to my colleagues to once again serve as the House Democratic leader," Pelosi said Wednesday at a press conference following a meeting with fellow Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

On the 10th anniversary of her election as Democratic leader, Pelosi said her colleagues had made their desire for her to remain as leader "very clear." There had been mounting speculation that the 72-year-old California Democrat might step aside and yield to younger figures in the party.

Pelosi served two terms as speaker of the House, the first woman to ever hold that role, from 2007-2011, during which time she oversaw House passage of President Barack Obama's landmark health reform law. She has also taken a special interest in advancing legislation intended to address the effects of climate change, prompting a vote on a "cap-and-trade" bill in 2009 which eventually stalled in the Senate.

Republicans seemed almost giddy about the announcement.

"There is no better person to preside over the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in history than the woman who is solely responsible for relegating it to a prolonged minority status," said Paul Lindsay, the communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

As part of her decision to stay aboard, Pelosi said that New York Rep. Steve Israel had agreed to serve a second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Israel helped Democrats pick up seats in the most recent election.

Pelosi's decision also means the top leadership in the House would presumably remain the same for the next two years:

-- John Boehner as speaker

-- Eric Cantor as majority leader

-- Pelosi as minority leader

-- Steny Hoyer as minority whip.

Pelosi was chosen by other Dems and elected as House Speaker by the other Dem reps, and in 2011 selected and elected as House Minority leader. Seems the conservative "pundits" on this board have too much time on their hands.

Oh wait she wanted to stay to get more insider trading secrets to add to her already wealth. How much does she donate of her own money to charities?

She is so fake, but everyone thinks she is so great. Look at the eyes people this woman is fake and has a heart of stone.

Nancy Pelosi's decision to run again as Minority Leader is hardly a surprise. There was no way someone like that would leave the stage for someone else to get the spotlight. No way, she has to be the star. I'm surprised she can take time out from Botox, filler and facelifts however to run her Democrats.

You know this all started back in 2010 WHEN Republicans wanted to keep unemployment as HIGH

as possible going into 2012 election in order to defeat Obama. California, had 12% unemployment at that time, and struggled to reduce it without ANY federal help, worsening CALIFORNIA'S already dire budget situation. That's all bad enough. What is truly unjust about this situation is that Speaker Pelosi did everything right. Under her leadership the past two years, the House of Representatives passed some very strong legislation that mostly fulfilled a progressive agenda. Some of the highlights of Speaker Pelosi's accomplishments:

          • Strong health care bill with a public option
          • Cap-and-trade climate bill
          • Blueprint for new transportation bill with $50 billion in high speed rail funding
          • Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell
          • Decent (if not great) financial regulation bill

That's funny, GOP spokesperson referencing "the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in History." And did you ever notice that whom ever becomes the Democratic party nominee for President in any given year, is automatically given the distinction of being "the most liberal member of the party?" If only GOP voters were capable of at least some degree of in-depth thought, they would see right through all that rhetorical nonsense.

Her famous words "just pass it and then we will see what's in it" speaks tons on the intellegence of this woman and the people from California who elected her. If any woman needed to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen, this woman does. She has no place in government.

and nothing in the article about NBC's Luke Russert's tactless and stupid question about her age -- which she dared him to ask of male leaders on the other side? Luke, who got his job way too young while still unprepared and immature (which he still is) just because of his late father's fame and reputation, should be particularly careful about asking age-related questions.

Fortunately, people can "still" say and write whatever they want in this country. It is what they "do" that defines them. Unfortunately, Washington doesn't do to much of anything except spend. That is what defines them.

The midterms in 2014 are going to be as ugly as the 2012 presidential. All seats in the House are up for grabs and I am guessing the Tea Party reps that didn't get booted this year will get their walking papers in 2014. As for the senate, only 33 seats up for grabs there..a little more sticky.

Still, it is more dangerous to have single party control over everything than it is to have a somewhat divided congress...we need a change of attitude and a change out of the reps who refuse to cooperate in their own party or with the other side.

Except that Hillary has said many, many, many, many times that she has no intention of running in 2016. What is the party going to do, drag her kicking and screaming back into the fold and dissuade any and all other Dem candidates from trying to get the nomination? She wants to stay home and be a grandmother to Chelsea's eventual children...she has said it several times that she is tired and wants out.

Plus she has a large piece of baggage around her neck, called Bill. Even if she were to change her mind and run, people would still see the potential of Bill getting back into the White House which was one of the reasons she didn't get the nomination in '08.

"There is no better person to preside over the most liberal House Democratic Caucus in history than the woman who is solely responsible for relegating it to a prolonged minority status," said Paul Lindsay...

What an absurd remark, the same propaganda recycled every two years as Republicans, on cue, demonize Democratic politicians as "THE most liberal" in history. In 2008 many Democrats voted for Obama in the primaries because we wanted a clean break from the polarization of Bill Clinton's presidency and felt that Hillary Clinton was a lightning rod for controversy. Well, what we learned was that no matter what Democrat is in leadership, even a centrist politician like Barak Obama, he or she will be demonized by the Republican Party as the Second Coming of Karl Marx. Yes, Rep. Pelosi sparks a lot of irrational hatred among Republicans, but no matter who replaced her, it wouldn't be long before the Republican propaganda machine would launch a full smear campaign. There's no point in dumping Mrs Pelosi overboard to appease the Republicans; they can't be placated and they'll demonize any and all Democrats in leadership.

And by the way, Mr Lindsay, I hope your party is enjoying its "prolonged minority status" in the U.S. Senate. So sorry you guys knifed Dick Lugar in the back. It was really nice of you to hand that seat in Indiana to the Democrats, but really, you should have kept it for Sen. Lugar, who is a true statesman and that rare example of a Republican who shows respect for his fellow Americans in the other party.
