First Thoughts: Like sands through the hourglass...

Like sands through the hourglass, the latest in the Petraeus sex scandal… Will this reflect poorly on the military as an institution?... Obama meets with labor and progressive leaders at 11:30 am ET to talk about upcoming fiscal cliff negotiations… John Kerry as defense secretary?... Will Pelosi stick around?... And sifting through the exit polls: GOP lost on the issues, too… But there were two bright spots for the party (on role of government and health care).

*** Like sands through the hourglass…: Just when we thought the Petraeus sex scandal couldn't get any more bizarre, here are the new developments we’ve seen in JUST the last 12 hours: Last night we learned, via the Wall Street Journal, that the FBI agent who started the investigation that uncovered the affair between CIA Director David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell had apparently sent a shirtless photos to Jill Kelley. Kelley, you remember, is the woman Broadwell allegedly sent threatening emails to because she feared Kelly was a rival for Petraeus' affections. Then we learned that Gen. John Allen -- the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan who has been nominated to be head of U.S. forces in Europe and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO -- sent 20,000 to 30,000 pages of documents to Kelley (most of them emails). And then comes the news that Petraeus didn’t want to resign, at least until it became clear his affair with Broadwell would become public. Folks, you can't make this up; it sounds like "Young and the Restless," “Days of Our Lives" or an absurd episode of “Real Housewives.”

Handout / Reuters

General John R. Allen, left, incoming commander, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)/U.S. Forces- Afghanistan (USFOR-A) and General David H. Petraeus, commander, ISAF/USFOR-A, attend a meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan in this July 9, 2011 file photograph.

*** Will this reflect poorly on the military as an institution? The question is whether these are isolated incidents or something more systemic within the military’s culture, especially its top commanders. In our May 2012 NBC/WSJ poll, respondents rated the U.S. military as the institution they had the most confidence in -- a combined 74% said they either had a “great deal” or “quite a bit” of confidence in it. That’s was compared with just 42% who said the same about the presidency, 33% who said that about the Supreme Court, 25% who said that about religious leaders and organizations, 17% who said that about large corporations, 16% who said that about the federal government, and 15% who said that about the news media. As we’ve said before, we’ve become a society that has lost faith in its institutions. Is the military the next to go? This scandal, if it continues to deepen, could do what the Iraq war did NOT: erode trust in the military, at least with the leadership.

*** Latest in the fiscal cliff negotiations: At 11:30 am ET, President Obama and Vice President Biden meet with labor and progressive leaders to talk about the upcoming “fiscal cliff” negotiations. A reminder: The actual talks have not yet started; everyone has to get their politics out of the way first, and that’s what today’s White House meeting is all about. The question: How much leeway is the left going to give Obama, especially when it comes to entitlements? That’s what today’s meeting is about for the president, find out what the left’s breaking point is on Social Security and Medicare, for instance. Here’s more fiscal-cliff reporting from the White House’s side: Team Obama says that its last offer in July 2011 is not even a remote starting point. Their starting point is what they outlined afterward: raising tax rates for the wealthy back to the Clinton levels. And from the GOP’s side: Their starting position is that they are open to changing tax code, but not raising rates. But what they REALLY want are changes to Social Security and Medicare. Politico’s David Rogers makes a very good point: What comes first in the negotiations -- locking down a revenue target or actual tax rates? You can’t really debate rates until a revenue target is agreed upon.

*** Kerry as defense secretary? As one of us reported on “TODAY” on Friday, defense secretary is an option for John Kerry – if the White House decides to have Susan Rice succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. And the Washington Post picks that up today: “President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus. Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.” But do note that tapping a new defense secretary might not be something we see for months, especially with the Petraeus/Allen news. The transition at State is expected a lot sooner. By the way, many Republicans, including South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, are promising a brutal confirmation fight if Rice is picked as they want to re-litigate her role in the Benghazi aftermath.

*** Will Pelosi stick around? Politico: “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will meet with top Democrats on Tuesday night — followed by another leadership-only session early Wednesday as she prepares for a meeting with all House Democrats — but it is still unclear whether she will stay or go after nearly a decade in power. Pelosi has declined to discuss her plans since Democrats picked up as many as eight seats on Election Day. During an interview Sunday with San Francisco-based reporters on Sunday, Pelosi wasn’t giving anything away.”

*** Sifting through the exit polls: GOP lost on the issues, too: For all the talk about how Romney and the Republicans lost when it came to demographics, the turnout, and the tactics, the exit polls also show that they lost when it came to a slew of issues. For years, the GOP has branded itself as the party that supports low taxes (especially for the wealthy) and opposes abortion and gay marriage. But according to the exit polls from last week’s presidential election, a combined 60% said that tax rates should increase either for everyone or for those making more than $250,000. Just 35% said the tax rates shouldn’t increase for anyone. What’s more, 59% said that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. And by a 49%-to-46% margin, voters said that their states should legally recognize same-sex marriage.

*** But two bright spots for the GOP: Even on comprehensive immigration reform -- a subject that some Republicans (like George W. Bush) once supported, but most no longer do -- 65% said most illegal immigrants should be offered a chance to apply for legal status. (And since the election, GOP senators like Lindsey Graham and John McCain are now signaling renewed support of comprehensive immigration reform.) But there were two bright spots for Republicans on the issues: A majority of voters -- 51% -- indicated that the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and the individuals. By comparison, 43% said government should do more to solve problems.  That’s a reversal from 2008, when 51% said the government should do more and 43% said it is doing too much. And a plurality of voters -- 49% -- said all or some of the health-care law should be repealed, versus 44% who said it should be expanded or left alone. So even with this pro-Obama electorate, the president cannot claim a mandate on health care or role of government.

What Civil War?

I confess that following Romney's defeat I was looking forward to watching and writing about the Republican civil war. Seeing who gets thrown under the bus is as entertaining as watching the James Bond movie, "Skyfall". But on closer inspection, the pundits are wrong. There is no civil war.

In order to have a war there has to be two opposing factions: In this case the moderates versus the conservatives. But within the House and Senate there are only Republican conservatives. John Boehner is a conservative and all his followers are to the right of him, making him out to appear moderate.

There are no elected leaders among the conservatives, only self-appointed leaders like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Hannity, and Grover Norquist. All of whom created the illusion that Romney would win.

And when it comes to moderate leaders…there aren't any. Jon Huntsman is without a party and Grover Norquist called Romney a "Poopy Head". BTW, where are Mitt and Anne Romney? I haven't heard or seen them all a week. Some say they are in their California home riding their new car elevator singing their new mantra: "Rasmussen said we were up, reality said we were down. Fox News said we were up, reality said we were down."

So if there is no civil war within the GOP, where is the conflict? The conflict is between the ears of the conservatives. They are struggling to come to grips with the reality that the social issues of the 1950's have long passed. In 2012 an African American can be twice elected to POTUS. It is a time to accept the notion that old white guys are no longer in control, to treat women equally, to accept gay and lesbian marriage, and to welcome immigrants who had the courage to come to this country to have a better life. That is the real conflict conservatives are facing.

But there is an external conflict as well. Conservatives must face President Obama and bite the bullet that reducing the debt will include raising taxes on the wealthy. Only dumb conservatives are willing to fall on their sword of denying the middle class a tax break in order to protect the wealthy. It's tough being a conservative these days.

As for the future, it depends on how well the conservatives can shift their thinking to the 21st century. Many conservatives from the deep South will not be able to change--they are stuck in the past. But in 2014 there is another election and one has to wonder how long it will take for reasonable conservatives to accept a new definition of what it means to be "conservative".

Looks like the Wicked Witch of the West might be warming up the broom for one final trip back to SF after her House Dems dismal performance in the 2012 election. There are rumors that major babisina Debbie W-S might challenge Steny Hoyer for the House Minority Leader position. THAT would be a great cat-fight!!!

BTW, I’m looking forward to many laffs now that mega-moron Alan Grayson is back in the House.

Pelosi to meet with top House Dems
By: John Bresnahan
November 12, 2012 08:15 PM EST

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will meet with top Democrats on Tuesday night — followed by another leadership-only session early Wednesday as she prepares for a meeting with all House Democrats — but it is still unclear whether she will stay or go after nearly a decade in power.

Pelosi has declined to discuss her plans since Democrats picked up as many as eight seats on Election Day. During an interview Sunday with San Francisco-based reporters on Sunday, Pelosi wasn’t giving anything away.

“When I see my caucus, I will discuss it with them in the beginning of this week rather than discuss it with rumor in Washington,” Pelosi told the reporters. “I will make that announcement to my caucus. I know that we’re best friends and all, but I think that I will share that with them first.”

Fiesty, most men are linear thinkers. If a woman sent us a half nude photo chances are most straight men might be interested in responding. So a lot of straight men make the assumption that women are as interested in seeing half-nude men as we are in seeing half-nude women and will therefore respond.

Most of us also don't see the real reflection in the mirror.

What a sorry sight it is to see David Frum going after the GOP entertainers on tv and radio. He is as responsible for the Republican losses as anybody.

Barack Obama didn’t win in 2008 because of Rush Limbaugh. Barack Obama won because the nation didn’t trust the Republican Party to runthe Nation. And the nation still doesn’t trust the Republican Party. Nor should we. Which is why President Obama was re-elected.

And 85% of the reason why is because of what Frum himself was selling during the Bush Administration. And please keep in mind as Frum and his pals go after Fox News, that it was the Bush Administration who exploited Fox News in order to sell a war to the nation.

And when GWB was leaving the White House, it was Rush Limbaugh who was one of GWB’s last guests at the White House. A sort of “thanks for everything” invitation.

The Reinvention of David Frum, by Justin Raimondo, August 17, 2012

David "Axis of Evil" Frum first gained notoriety as one of George W. Bush’s more polemical speechwriters. During the run-up to the Iraq war, he was all over the media, agitating for the invasion and viciously denouncing anyone who questioned the wisdom of such a course. In an infamous article for National Review, entitled "Unpatriotic Conservatives," he attacked those conservatives and libertarians who
counseled caution, smearing Robert Novak, Pat Buchanan, Llewellyn Rockwell, Samuel Francis, Thomas Fleming, Scott McConnell, Joe Sobran, Charley Reese, Jude Wanniski, Eric Margolis, Taki Theodoracopulos, and myself as, variously,"defeatist," "conspiracy theorists," and"anti-Semitic."

Here is Frum, in March of 2003:

"They have made common cause with the left-wing and Islamist antiwar movements in this country and in Europe. They deny and excuse terror. They espouse a potentially self-fulfilling defeatism. They publicize
wild conspiracy theories. And some of them explicitly yearn for the victory of their nation’s enemies."

Frum went on for at least three thousand words, attacking his enemies as traitors and terrorist-sympathizers. It was all lies, of course, and I answered them here. Yet now we see Frum has reinvented himself as a "moderate" Republican, and has carved out a new career for himself as the kind of conservative who gets invited on NPR and CNN to snark at his former comrades. In a recent interview with Politico, he was asked: "What do you know now that you wish someone had told you 10 years ago?" His answer:

"That the Iraq War would be a disaster. Come to think of it, they did tell me."

President Obama. Please tear up the resignation of General Petraeus and send him back to work as CIA Director. This "so called scandal" is nothing but a waste of a good mans reputation. He has the capability to carry out his responsibilities like no one else. Getting mixed up with some fossy doesn't disqualify him. Even the FBI dropped the investigation.

Hire him back Mr. President.

Interesting how this Petraeus affair is unfolding.

I read yesterday that evidently Chuck Todd started his program yesterday morning this way:

What did the President know and when did he know it?

Sure. Let's pin this on President Obama. Why not? It's not like the republicans have anything better to do. They're walking around in a daze right now, throwing whatever they can against the wall hoping it will stick and then - this happens.

Petraeus had an affair. So what. The cast of characters is amusing, quite arrogant, lots of jealousy and not very secretive. Nothing new.

___________

I hate to see Senator John Kerry go, but he's been a U.S. Senator for a long time and if he wants to move on to be part of the Obama cabinet, then I wish him well. He deserves it.

First Read pegged the Petreaus sex scandal exactly right. It is like a soap opera episode. Heard last night that the FBI "friend" of Kelly doesn't like President Obama and wanted the story to break before the election. Maybe Darryl Issa should hold a hearing on why Eric Cantor knew of the Petreaus triangular mess two weeks before President Obama did. If the right can talk nonstop conspiracy theories, here's one for them to mull over: did the FBI guy in FL who doesn't like President Obama or democrats, tip off Eric Cantor in the hopes he could get the Petreaus story out before Nov 6 and hopefully it would turn the election in Romney's favor?

If there weren't so many serious issues to be solved, one could enjoy watching the soap opera sex scandal coming from "family values" crowd.

Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Hannity, and Grover Norquist, FOX NEWS and its viewers live in a parallel universe. Nothing that is real exists in the alternate universe; but that's what the FOX NATION gets; nothing!!!

But there's always Sarah Palin.

Does America Deserve Sarah Palin Again?

Speaking exclusively to Fox News from her Wasilla, AK home, Palin said there was no time to waste in replacing the newly reelected Barack Obama:

"Barack Obama's second term is going to be a bigger disaster than the first," she said in an interview to Fox's Sean Hannity,"We need to prepare our nation for the post-Obama era of prosperity."

"The next election is only two years away. That's only 420 days. And when that day comes, I intend to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2014. "

There's only one problem. Unbeknownst to Palin, U.S. presidents are elected to four-year terms. The next presidential election will be in 2016.

Rarely does it amount to anything. I don't know if he's a Democrat or Republican. I just know he's changed a lot over the years. Not for the better.

And he was one who was buying into the republican nonsense about the election being super duper close weeks before Election Day.

We weren't buying it, yet of course, democrats have no voice when it comes to Chuck. He always always prefers to believe the Republicans are telling the truth.

Ron:

Enjoyed your post, but I think you make an error when you speak about conservatives and/or moderates in the Republican Party. Yesterday, Michael Steele, who twists and spins mightily to defend the GOP, said Republicans must define a conservative. The fact is, Noah Webster has already done a fine job of defining a conservative, and there are precious few of them in the Republican Party. If there are any moderates in the party, they are hiding.

The GOP is a ragtag collection of single-issue groups. Period. These people are so extreme they fall outside even the wildest definition of conservative. In their world, pro-life means you support the death penalty. In their world, religious freedom means you are free to espouse their religion and no other. In their world, a slowly improving economy is a failed economy. Again and again, we see these people are completely disconnected from reality. There is no single group that wields power enough to move the GOP, but their collective power has moved the party to the extreme right.

Indeed, the truth is that President Obama has taken any number of conservative positions. Any number of conservative views are held by "lefties", "libbies", and Democrats. (See Noah Webster's definition.) It is suicidal for those of us with the ability to reason and think critically to allow extremists to define us. It really is possible to hold views that are conservative and to hold views that can be defined as liberal. It really is possible to take a position that says wasting money is wrong, while holding a position that says invading a woman's body against her will is also wrong.

The GOP stands at the brink of destruction. There is no point in hoping they will reform. In fact, it appears many of their "leaders" are still insisting they are sacrificing the purity of their noble positions. Let them destroy themselves. Be done with them forever.

Those of us to the left of these nuts, should make it clear there is a party that welcomes rational ideas, rational debate, and a certain knowledge that compromise is part of the real world. There's plenty of room to the left of these people, because the old political center is to the left of today's GOP. We must make it clear that reasoned dissent is not only welcome, but necessary if we are to move forward. We must welcome these people aboard a ship of state that is headed forward not backward.

If I live to be 100, I won't see a President who embodies my values better than Barack Obama. After decades of listening to the ugly tripe from the Rush Limbaughs and Ann Coulters of this country, and seeing John Kerry swiftboated during the 2004 campaign, finally, finally, good has prevailed in American politics. If Republicans were smart, and they aren't, they will examine their own souls for why they lost this presidential election and seats in the Senate and House.

Memo to Chuck Todd: If you want to keep viewers, try being less partisan, try not to blame President Obama for whatever floats your boat. Start your show asking why Eric Cantor knew about the Petreaus mess two weeks ago yet the White House was not informed? Try asking why Petreaus did not go to President Obama and personally inform him of the FBI investigation--that would have been the honorable thing to do instead of hoping it would all just go away. In other words, Mr. Todd, get your facts straight first before wandering off into republican "conspiracy theory-ville" where FOX News lives.

I figured that Fox News and the fearless GOP congressional witch hunters would figure out how to fit David Petraeus scandal into their conspiracy theory about how President Obama is plotting to destroy America. And I wasn't disappointed. The theory is that Obama was using knowledge of Petraeus' infidelity to blackmail him into not blowing the whistle on the Benghazi coverup.

That's what the Fox Noozers are going with, and that's what the GOP's witch hunter Peter King is insinuating on what will surely be one of his many appearances on CNN, which has been hyping the bogus Benghazi conspiracy theory for over a month and will no doubt use help King use the Petraeus scandal to give it new life.

Being a reader of sci-fi and fantasy fiction,I know you have to suspend disbelief to enjoy it, so I gues the Fox News viewers are suspending their disbelief in some unexplained political motive for a Benghazi coverup and that Petraeus would succumb to blackmail to keep quiet about it -- especially now that his scandal is out in the open. If he were being blackmailed, he'd have nothing to lose by publicly accusing the administration of blackmail, and also now blowing the whistle on the Benghazi coverup and the mysterious motives for it.

Come to think of it, I think I'll stick to sci-fi. It's way more believable. It looks like Obama is going to have a fun four more years.

Steve Benen:

Quick quiz: which country is slated to be the world's larger producer of oil in 2017? If you guessed Saudi Arabia, you're mistaken.

The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia as the world's leading oil producer by about 2017 and will become a net oil exporter by 2030, according to a new report released on Monday by the International Energy Agency.

That increased oil production, combined with new American policies to improve energy efficiency, means that the United States will become "all but self-sufficient" in meeting its energy needs in about two decades -- a "dramatic reversal of the trend" in most developed countries, the report says.

there is a video somewhere on the web ( can't find it now) where Chuck Todd says I am a Republican.

Democratic voters are increasingly supporting Republican voters. This is largely due to the lingering impact of the financial downturn, which has been exacerbated in red states and red counties with red policies. Republicans have been enacting austerity measures at state and local levels with unprecedented downsizing of public employees during the jobs crisis. Total governmental employment is down more than half a million since President Obama took office.

Many of these workers who lost their good government jobs are unemployed or forced to take wages so low that they still qualify for food stamps. In 2010, 41 percent of those who received food aid had jobs.

Blue states tend to take better care of the poor and also take steps to prevent poverty by spending more on education.

By nearly every measure, people who live in the blue states are healthier, wealthier, and generally better off than people in the red states,” according to The New Republic’s Jonathan Cohn.

Republican states not only benefit most from government support, their policies create the need for food stamps in the first place.

Infidelity has no borders. It cares not what religion, political bent, gender, station in life nor economic worth of those involved. It is an equal opportunity sin, and the majority dive into the pool, most through action and some through thought.

Beverly, yes I had heard that but had forgotten about it. He said something along the lines of "we Republicans" or something like that. It used to be that being a Republican was no big deal. But what we're finding these days is that they are liars. All of them.

I always liked Chuck but have a hard time watching him these days. Some people say the president knocked him down a peg and he didn't like it early on in the Obama Admin.

The press conferences are just horrible. Everybody is itching to be Sam Donaldson. In a way it's amusing, but in reality not really.

I think it was last year when President Obama went on a foreign trip and the American press were asking him questions in front of the world. It was embarrassing to watch. The questions from our media were so high school.

Jody, so well said about Chuck. Over the past four years he has gone from being a numbers guy to a gossipy reporter. I, too, am fed up listening to him as he cynically works at undermining the President.

This ongoing sordid saga of General Petraeus is now expanding to include the commander of the forces in Afghanistan, Marine General Allen. As more time passes, it gets weirder. General Allen is in Washington, for confirmation hearings on his nomination by the President for NATO Supreme Commander, which now have been put on hold. It is reported he sent 30k pages of emails to the other woman in this mind bending story. And the angle on Cantor is beyond troubling. The FBI fellow who told Cantor and sent half naked pics to her, should be fired.

I have to ask the question, does this happen all the time? These military fellows are lionized mostly by republicans and they act like dumb teenagers, is that because they think they are above the law.

The brand new American flag features a green and red color scheme, meant to symbolize Islam and Socialism, respectively. So, let me get this right. If I don't like someone, I can go to the FBI and say I have received "harassing" emails. They will then investigate all of this persons emails, not charge them, but everyone will know they were investigated.

Last time I knew, having an affair wasn't against the law. What grounds did the FBI have for looking into Petraeus's emails, and what grounds did they have to look at Allen's. What does "inappropriate" mean. Laws were not broken in the Petraeus matter, if it comes back that no laws were broken in Allen's matter, what does that say about the FBI investigating what should be private emails?

We weren't buying it, yet of course, democrats have no voice when it comes to Chuck. He always always prefers to believe the Republicans are telling the truth.

The media hacks and talking heads are, for the most part, very well paid to do little more than stir up controversy. They seem to think it doesn't matter who wins and who loses an election just as long as that fat paycheck keeps coming. Facts and information don't much matter. And those are the moderates in media.

Then we have the absurdly well paid lunatic fringe: Limbaugh, Beck, Coulter, Rove, Norquist, Palin and all the Fox 'anchors' (who are indeed dead weight in our disingenuous media culture) who are not elected to any office but are the de facto heads of the conservative wing.

WE THE PEOPLE have just sent them a message: We're tired of your lies, your spin and your greedy self- absorbed stupidty. Quit f------ with us.

Boycott media cretins! Give them a much-needed taste of reality.

GBM, well said; agree about Chuck T, he has become gossipy and quite full of himself to boot. Now, along with Morning Joe, The Daily Rundown no longer is turned on and listened to; not because I don't want opposing views but Joe S whines and brags, that's it; because Todd's show has become gossip not journalism, conspiracy theories and finger-pointing is not journalism--both are beneath MSNBC otherwise solid bi-partisan efforts.

The Petreaus scandal gets more messy by the hour. My guess is we have not seen the last military person resign. The FBI person in FL should be fired. Eric Cantor should be questioned and a hearing held about his involvement, what he knew, how he knew and when he knew and most of all, why he was informed but not the White House or others in Congress.

Yes this happens all the time. However, as I have said time and time again it is a personal matter. As long as no national security issues are involved what is the problem? Like with Clinton, Edwards name another politician I don't care and don't believe that their failing in their personal lives make them any less capable in their political lives. I do wonder if Petraus was a democrat would there be more attacks on him from the usual gang of self righteous posters?

Interesting that the some would rather deflect conspiracy theories to suggest that the sacking of Petraus is a way to steer away from Benghazi. Unfortunate that a stellar career is ended because of a personal matter. Sad to see the puratanical zeal of the "Crucible" and "Scarlett Letter" hypocrites demonize one now maybe two good generals. To think it all was brought up two women with high school type "stay away from my boyfriend antics." The funnier thing if the other, other woman was involved in her own affair why report the anonymous emails. On Petraus' part wonder why his training at counter insurgency and obfuscation couldn't keep this thing secret?

Seriously though you know it is a bizzarro world when those in power get impeached or fired, forced to resign from positions of power over affairs but are held blameless for lying about wars, WMD's, authorizing torture etc.

This scandal is good enough for Hardball's - Sideshow. It will allow the chattering class in Washington to ignore their duties of governing due to their shock and consternation.

I believe this whole thing was an effort on the republicans part to try and manufacture some kind of "October Surprise" and it blew up in their faces. Seeing as all the players in this are republicans and the rabid FBI agent was contacting Eric Cantor I think it was all orchestrated by the repubs from the very beginning. What I want to know is, what did Eric Cantor know and when did HE know it! Never going to convince me that Cantor kept this all to himself.

Good Morning everyone, I hope you all had a good three day holiday and are rested up and ready for the good fight.

Lot's on our plates this morning.

1. The General's ladies. I have no comment. I feel very bad for the General's wife and I believe they should be left to sort this out for themselves. Very sad situation.

2. The future of the GOP looks very limited. They will blame Sandy, the liberal media or poor Mitt Romney and reject any suggestion their political positions may have been the problem. Their denial will be reinforced by the Fox News echo chamber and the nattering nabobs of right wing hate radio. If we are ever going to heal this country and be in a position to go forward in a positive manner we've got to do something about the use of the public airwaves for political propaganda posing as "entertainment" and "news". Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.

3. The Texas Secesh: Let'em go. I've been saying this for years now. Sell them back to Mexico. Give them back free of charge and with our blessings if the Mexican government won't pay for their return. Buh-bye, adios, hasta la vista baby, don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

Folks, I lived in Texas, Dallas to be exact, in the early 70's and it was a great place to live. The people were friendly and the culture was diverse and very colorful. But they have changed and changed for the worse and I'd be happy to see them secede. We don't need them. Of course there are good people in Texas but they can all move north before the final documents are signed. Let them go. I'll take Puerto Rico any day to replace them. Lovely people, beautiful island.

Besides, without Texas in their corner the GOP will dry up and blow away.

Well, that's all I have. I'm gonna go play my new Jazz Guitar a little bit. I was so confident about the way the election (thanks to Nate Silver) I bought my new guitar a week before election day and I may buy ANOTHER new guitar before the week is out. Happy days are indeed here again!

Amy, big smile about your reaction to the Romney, Ryan ladies. I could muster no sympathy for either Romney or Ryan or their spouses, especially Ann "you people" it's our turn Romney. I usually feel some sympathy for the losing candidate; I did for John McCain (none for Sarah Palin). Mitt and Paul lied constantly; they blew dog whistles and encouraged dog whistle blowing; they preached disdain for half the country while their policies were for the very rich. Ryan's VP acceptance speech was ripped apart as lie after lie even by FOX; Romney was equally ridiculed for being a liar. None of them deserve one bit of sympathy for losing, they earned their loss with their own actions, their own lies, their own disdain for the less fortunate among us, their arrogance--they deserved to lose.

To those of you who are sick and tired of hearing about polls. Sorry.

Scott Rasmussen recently told Politico that his presidential race tracking poll was wrong because he had underestimated minority turnout. This sounds amazingly unprofessional to me. Good pollsters don't weight their results with assumptions about turnout. They weight them with demographic factors from government surveys of the population and then screen the results with questions to indicate who likely voters will be. Rasmussen didn't do that and his results were among the worst of all the major polls except Gallup. He predicted Romney would win by 1 point but he lost by 3 points.

No wonder that Romney was "shell shocked" by his loss if he was only paying attention to polls like Rasmussen's that were weighted with guestimations to get results that Romney would like. Presidents always have to resist the urge to listen to yes-men who only tell them what they want to hear. Romney's apparent inability to consider polls that told the hard truth in favor of polls based on dubious science shows he would have been worse than most presidents in that regard. Another reason why we were lucky to dodge the bullet of a Romney presidency.

Eric - I believe the FBI was brought in because the e-mails were "threatening" so they were called. Unfortunately when you head the CIA even private matters can become very public as it puts you at risk of being blackmailed and you giving away secrets. It's a fine line and my guess is the General is regretting his affair for more reasons than it getting out. (Who wants to find out the person they cared about tossed them to the wolves?)

As for the Republican Party - they have to actually stand for SOMETHING. During the past election we found they stood for one thing one day, something entirely different the next. But mostly, they stood against immigrants and women; gays; anyone different.

At some point, they have to realize they are courting a very limited base - and even some of those have grown up and accepted diversity.

It is for married members of the US Military. Read up on "adultery" in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. What hasn't been completely clarified is whether Patreaus was porking the broad exclusively while wearing his medal-encrusted blouse or if the "indiscretion" occurred on civilian time at the CIA. The former would be "illegal" and the latter would be simply immoral ~ something which never seems to disqualify someone for a high government post in Washington.

Jody, Iowa

Maybe Darryl Issa should hold a hearing on why Eric Cantor knew of the Petreaus triangular mess two weeks before President Obama did. If the right can talk nonstop conspiracy theories, here's one for them to mull over: did the FBI guy in FL who doesn't like President Obama or democrats, tip off Eric Cantor in the hopes he could get the Petreaus story out before Nov 6 and hopefully it would turn the election in Romney's favor?

Jody,

Darrel Issa has a investigation of his own to deal with.

The organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington – or CREW – is accusing Issa of violating House Ethics rules. Days before the election, Issa used his committee resources to upload a YouTube video attacking the President over State Department dinner spending.

As CREW asserts, the ad had nothing to do with Issa’s work on the Oversight Committee and was a blatant attack ad against the President. According to Ethics rules, committee resources, which are funded by taxpayer dollars, cannot be used for political campaigns. Rather than addressing the allegations directly, a spokesperson for Issa attacked CREW as a partisan organization.

What’s the point of government oversight, when the guy in charge has his own fair share of unethical behavior?

What planet do you guys live on? Obama won and you guys should be celebrating and feeling good about 4 more years just like the last 4. But take your rose colored glasses off for a second and take a big breath because how is this victory the elimination of the GOP party. Lets see, Obama received 8 million few votes than 08 and won by a very small majority. He basically won by 3 million votes and over 60 million voters wanted Romney to win. Almost 50% of America disagrees with the path Obama is taking us on. Now for the demographics. Obama won because he got 70% of the latino vote, 65% of the voters making under $30k a year, 95% of the African American vote and over 60% of the single female vote and over 60% of the young vote. Romney received 65% of the white, married and senior citizen vote and received the vast majority of the votes from working taxpayers who fund 90% of governments income tax revenue. Obama won because the segments in our society who think that government is there to make their life financially better cast their vote for Obama. You really think that spells trouble for the GOP? This election has created an economic polarization on the role of government. Because the GOP is on the wrong side of a bunch of social issues in which many voters dislike, they lose too many voters who think that the President can really impact their right to an abortion or have a gay marriage or get free contraceptives. They also are on the wrong side of some path to citizenship for some immigrants but on the right side of protecting our borders. They need to do more to attract latino voters but they will. Because they are on the right side on the role of government and the economy, there is no way that the GOP party is now dead. They are actually stronger according to the polls than they were in 08. I suppose Obama could start leading from the front and move more to the middle on economic matters but I just dont see an ideologue like him getting there but I could be wrong. The problem for the democrats as they dont really have a new star in the waiting after Obama. The GOP has plenty of socially moderate economic stars that will and should become the new face of the party.

Yes, it's incredible. Nate Silver doesn't have a very high opinion of Rasmussen, either. Silver has that liberal bias in favor of facts over wishful thinking.

Colorado Man - Petraeus was an outstanding General and headed the CIA well. His personal life is what did him in - nothing to do with Obama. And, the Republicans knew prior to the election about he mess - not Obama - and chose not to release it. So, I guess the epic failure is the Republican party. Oh wait - I KNOW the epic failure is the Republican party!

Kirk-2957282

there is no way that the GOP party is now dead.

Kirk,

Let's get one thing straight; more Cubans voted for President Obama.

Among Cuban voters, the vote was split—49% supported Obama while 47% supported Romney.

Pew: Latino Vote Share Outperformed 2008 Levels In Florida, Colorado, Nevada

Obama carried Florida’s Hispanic vote 60% to 39%, an improvement over his 57% to 42% showing in 2008. Also, Hispanics made up 17% of the Florida electorate this year, up from 14% in 2008.

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/pew-latino-vote-share-outperformed-2008-levels-in

See, Kirk putting Rubio's brown face did/does no good since he supports the Romney Ryan Plan. President Obama already leads otherwise he won not have won in a landslide; despite the bullsh!t about the economy the GOP/Teajihadist tried.

The person who should be leading is the Grimm Weeper; John Boehner.

over 60 million voters wanted Romney to win.

Kirk, I'm going to boil it down to that. You may be correct in terms of numbers, but you're wrong on the reasons behind those numbers.

Most of the voters who supported Romney were deluded by his lies. LIES!!! Big, bold whoppers that no honest person would believe a presidential candidate to be capable of making over and over again. That's how Romney tried to fool gullible voters, and the media rarely called him on his lies. In fact, Fox supported his lies.

Many of us do remember the Bush/Cheney years, although the GOP tried mightily to re-write history. It's like that old saying about fooling the people... Romney just wasn't able to sell himself because he is a LIAR. Americans stubbornly refused to be hoodwinked, and we refused to let obscene amounts of money sway us from reality.

And now we come to that all-important fact: reality. Embrace it, Kirk.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Tomas--I know my stream of consiousness posts are difficult to read mainly because I am lazy. Will try to do better. Beverly, not sure I ever understand your hate filled posts. Nothing you post has anything to do with my points. Of course, latinos voted for Obama in greater numbers that was my point. I never said that the election didnt polarize the nation. But its basically 50/50 and Obama's popularity is significantly down. He lost 8 million votes since 08--what part of that dont you get? He made it up with polarizing the electorate down economic lines. Those who feel the role of government is to provide some sort of economic benefit and those who fund those benefits. Thats a long term prescription for failure. Reddev never has any insightful things to add-just partisan blathering. Last time I checked, Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie, Rubio and others are far more socially moderate and would appeal more to those groups that the far right alienates. Its not like the far left hasnt already alienated 60 million voters who voted for Romney.

Fox News Sold Conservatives "A Bill Of Goods" On Benghazi And The Election

http://mediamatters.org/video/2012/11/13/eric-boehlert-on-the-war-room-fox-news-sold-con/191337

The Benghazi story, or specifically the one the GOP Noise Machine is committed to tell about the September 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, perfectly captures the fevered Obama hatred that conservatives have carried throughout his first term. And it's a story they seem desperate to broadcast during the final weeks of the campaign.

The upsetting national security news from Libya, the kind that has been spared this level of politicization in the past, is now being used as a vehicle for conservatives to spin their ugliest fantasies about the president and to depict him as heartless traitor who chose to let Americans die at the hands of Islamic terrorists.

This is the natural culmination of four years worth of Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Kirk - as usual you love to "hear" your ramblings. Although more latinos and blacks voted for President Obama, more well-educated women and young well educated men also voted for him. People who realize we need to work as a country - together - voted for him and against hatred. A very large percentage of people earning over $75,000 voted for the President. And, most of us don't receive any government subsidies. That is the lie the GOP has relied on throughout the past year. It is no more true today than it was in the past.

You can't get over the fact that the Republican party is comprised of people who antiquated ideas have made the party nearly obsolete. As more and more educated people leave the Republican party it will devolve even more. The party has no ideas to sustain it - only hatred of anyone who doesn't look and act just like they do. The long-term prescription for failure IS the Republican party.

And, clearly Republicans did nothing to excite the voters. Could it be that with 8 million fewer voting for President Obama and Romney still losing that the Republican party is a dismal failure????? A couple of comments for what they are worth....

The equation of the Patreeus story to a soap opera is great but shouldn't it be "As The Stomach Turns"?

As for the reaction to the loss of the electon by the Romneys and the Ryans.. When they came on stage I looked at their eyes and all of them had signs of crying. Anne had a really sour look and finally mustered a weak smile and an even weaker wave to the crowd. The Ryans were more stoick but signs of tears there too.

It's very clear Obama banned all "Torture" and even made it a crime. Geeezzzzz if the commander and chief knew about this black site with prisoners being interigated against US law..... Wouldn't that make him accessory? Just say'n.

I don't know, I mean I think I'm glad Obama kept sites like these open to keep us safe. It's just sad it couldn't remain covert and in the shadows.

    reprinted..

    Dear Red States:

We're ticked off at your Neanderthal attitudes and politics, so we've decided you're leaving.

We in New York, Mass and CA intend to form our own country and we're taking all the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Md, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Vermont, the rest of the Northeast, and DC also.

    We believe ...
this split will be beneficial to the entire nation and especially to the people of our new country called "The Enlightened States of America" (E.S.A).

    To sum up briefly:

You get Texas, Oklahoma, AZ and all the slave states.

We get stem cell research, the best beaches, and we'll take all of the creative gay people you don't want anyway.

We get Barack and Michelle, Bill & Hillary, Andrew Cuomo, Elizabeth Warren, and Dianne Feinstein. You get Bobby Jindal, Rick Perry and Todd Akin.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.

We get Apple, Intel, Microsoft and all the smart technology. You get WorldCom, the Koch Bros, and all the coal/oil pollution.

We get Harvard, Yale, Columbia, UC, Stanford and Princeton. You get Ole' Miss.

We get Silicon Valley, NYC, San Fran, Seattle and 85 percent of America's venture capital and best entrepreneurs.

    You get Alabama and Arkansas.

We get two-thirds of all the tax revenue. You get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition states, so we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of angry single moms and deadbeat dads.

With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of 80% of the country's fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92% of the nation's fresh fruit, 95% of America's quality wines (you can serve Ripple at your state dinners), 90% of the best cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the US low sulfur coal, all the living redwoods, solar power, the Sequoias and condors, all the Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UC, UCLA, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States you will have to cope with 88% of all the obese Americans and their projected healthcare costs, 92% of all US mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99% of all the Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, plus Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We also get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you very much. You get Appalachia.

You get the 38% of those in the Red states who believe that the world was created in 7 days and that Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, the 62% who are pro-life for fetuses but not for the kids who are actually born or their Moms, those who believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, the 44% who know that evolution is only a theory, the 53% who still believe that Saddam was part of 9/11 and had weapons of mass destruction, that Obama was born in Kenya, and the 61% of those crazy bastards who even believe they have higher morals than we do.

    Kirk, Kirk, Kirk

In 2010, the Republicans delivered a shellacking to the Democrats. You won House seats and state legislatures and governorships all over the country.

And what did Republicans do with their new jobs? In Maine, they began to implement the right-wing agenda, as outlined by the Heritage Center. They cut benefits for teachers and passed the savings onto millionaires in the form of tax cuts. They "reformed" health insurance so companies could charge rural seniors higher rates. Moved to cut low income people from social services. "Rolled back regulations" by, for example, legalizing the sale of fireworks and putting up a sign along the highway: Maine is Open for Business!

The result? We are the only New England state that hasn't seen an increase in employment. My city, Portland, struggles to deal humanely with the homeless folks from other parts of the state who have descended upon us.

So, naturally, the Republicans have lost the majority in the state legislature and I find it doubtful the governor will be re-elected in 2014. When you talk about elections, you can't just talk about which "tribe" won, but what policies failed or succeeded. President Obama's policies succeeded enough, obviously, so the voters returned him to power. Republican policies anacted in our state legislature did not succeed, in anything except enriching the wealthiest here, so those legislators lost their jobs. End of story.

"There is another shameful and damaging U.S. military scandal that ought to be given plenty of airtime: the out-of-control sexual harrassment and rape of service women and servicemen in all branches of our military, including educational institutions."

I think you've hit the nail on the head. What we are seeing unfolding in real time are the symptoms of a very real, systemic problem, permeating the very fabric of the military. What has happened at these levels illustrates the sense of entitlement and sexual power running throughout the entire chain of command, and explains very clearly WHY we have the problems with sexual assault and harassment within the ranks. Where did Petraeus and Broadwell receive their commissions? West Point. The attitudes at that particular institution are the same attitudes that exist at the AF Academy and Annapolis. It's not surprising that we have these problems. What IS surprising is that people are shocked by what has been exposed.

But, the Republican Party is going to go with someone like Ryan who is so far right of mainstream they will again lose the few sane people left in the party. The "leadership" cannot comprehend that they are alienating the majority of people in this country. But I will give credit to Christie for saying what no Republican is willing to say: that there is nothing wrong with a Republican praising President Obama for a job well done after Hurricane Sandy. Christie was called a traitor for doing so and he did point out that there is something wrong with his party for saying that.

What planet do you guys live on? Obama won and you guys should be celebrating and feeling good about 4 more years just like the last 4.

Being plagued with fanatics who can't deal with the stunning defeat the voters handed them might be a bit of a downer on the celebrations, but on the bright side, it's kind of amusing to see them thrashing around in their impotent rage.

But take your rose colored glasses off for a second and take a big breath because how is this victory the elimination of the GOP party. Lets see, Obama received 8 million few votes than 08 and won by a very small majority.

Obama still got more votes than G. W. Bush did in 2004 and won by a bigger margin over Romney than Bush won over John Kerry. Back in 2004, the connies claimed that Bush had a "mandate," but of course they've moved the goal posts now for Obama as to what can be considered a mandate.

Almost 50% of America disagrees with the path Obama is taking us on.

    Correction: 47.8% voted for Romney.

You forgot Asians. They are considered honorary white people by ultraconservatives due to their stereotype as hardworking entrepreneurs and straight-A students. 72% of Asians voted for Obama. Maybe there's something to the stereotype: Asians are apparently too well educated to buy what Romney was selling.

As for the rest of Obama voters, most of them are hardworking taxpayers, too. The Fox News race-baiting, false attacks on the MAJORITY who voted for Obama as deadbeats living off the government dole are not going to win over those voters to the GOP. Mitt lost after he insulted 47% of the voters. Hurling the same stupid insult at 51% of the voters isn't going to work any better.

Meanwhile back in the real World.....where are the Liberal articles on who knew what and did nothing concerning the Benghazi attack which left an Ambassador to the United States of America, and three other Americans, DEAD ?

BTW: the Presidential election is OVER. Time to get with the program.

Yeah. The election is over. Time for you to drop the vile crackpot conspiracy theories about Benghazi. Romney's despicable attempt to exploit the tragedy did not work. He lost, in case you didn't notice.

over 60 million voters wanted Romney to win.

Kirk, I'm going to boil it down to that. You may be correct in terms of numbers, but you're wrong on the reasons behind those numbers.

He's wrong on the numbers, too. Obama is beating Romney 62,306,898 to 58,937,514, and the votes are still being counted. Don't believe the numbers that these idiots pull out of their -- um out of thin air. The current totals can be seen at:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2012.

And no, the numbers aren't made up. They're exactly the same on news web sites like CBS, although I don't have the URL for that one.

Would a tax hike on the wealthy kill 700,000 jobs?
                    Posted by Glenn Kessler
                    — Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Tex.), on Fox News, Nov. 8, 2012
“According to Ernst & Young, raising the top rates would destroy nearly 700,000 jobs in our country.”
--House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Nov. 9
UPDATE: Boehner repeated the claim at a news conference the morning this column appeared
                    The Facts
According to an aide, Sessions obtained his figure from a study prepared last year by two economists at Ernst & Young for the Independent Community Bankers of America, the National Federation of Independent Business, the S Corporation Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — all opponents of the president’s agenda.
That might be the first clue that this is potentially not a neutral document. One of the authors is also a former official in George W. Bush’s Treasury Department.
The study is titled “Long-run macroeconomic impact of increasing tax rates on high-income taxpayers in 2013.”
In other words, this is not an immediate impact, but the “long run.” You have to dig into the endnotes on page 22 to find a definition of long run: “For models of this type, roughly two-third to three-quarters of the long-run effect is reached within a decade.”
Oh. So, even if one accepts the assumptions in this model — a big “if” — it still means that the loss of 700,000 jobs would not come in the first year, or by the end of Obama’s second term, or even a decade from now. Yet Sessions says the jobs would be taken “from people who need those jobs,” suggesting it would have an immediate effect. (Note: 700,000 jobs is a one-year figure, applying the long-run effect to today’s economy.)
                    The Pinocchio Test
Sessions is able to point to a study (though he stated the 700,000 figure as a fact), but on several levels his claim is misleading.
First, the study was underwritten by the White House’s opponents. Second, the study never examined what Obama claims he will do with the revenue — dedicate it to deficit reduction. And finally, the figure is so “long term” — more than 10 years away — that it is absurd to suggest those jobs would be lost in the near term.
UPDATE: Boehner did attribute the figure to Ernst & Young, but he went even further in saying the top rates would “destroy” 700,000 jobs. As we said, that is simply absurd.

I've been preparing taxes for more years than I want to say. Whatever the tax rates, entrepreneurs want to make money. It is important to remember that there are 2 tax rates being fought over here. One is the tax on earned income and will it go up from 35% to the 39% it was under Clinton. The second rate is the preferential rate for interest, dividends and capital gains. I think everyone agrees it is a good idea to encourage capital growth but the rate is now 15% when it was 20% for years. Even bigger, though, is the fact that if the Bush rates expire, interest & dividends will go from a 15% tax rate back to parity with whatever the top tax rate is. This is what the 1% are really arguing over, although no one will say it.

                    From my standpoint;

As long as National Security was not compromised then it is a question that primarily concerns the family’s involved. I know that in my particular case it wouldn’t be a National problem because I have a little Lady at home that will make a Gelding out of me most ricky ticky.

If behind the scenes the FBI is trying to return to the days of J. Edgar keeping a “Dirty Tricks File” on National Figures then it is a problem that Attorney General Holder needs to solve with alacrity so right now I’m waiting for developments and information before I comment further.

The military code of conduct is strict. I don't have to agree to it (or adhere to it) because I'm not in the military. But the General is. They hold themselves to higher standards then we hold them to. Hopefully they will not listen to us, and they will keep up their standards. The military is the only institution we have left that seems to have any.

Don't fret, Pete. Raising taxes on the rich doesn't destroy jobs because they remain viable consumers even with higher taxes. For companies taxes are paid on net income after expenses such as salaries are deducted so there is little effect there too. Companies need employees to function properly and to grow. What has an effect on jobs are cuts to goverment spending when contracts are not renewed. I hope someone mentions this in the media one day. But probably not because they're all a bunch of clowns on both sides of the isle.

The nation simply dodged another flooding sh^t deluge this election. While I love our President, His challenges will not be easily overcome. We are yet, generally a nation of raw bullshi^^ers. Things of substance, fairness, national good, etc. that will not stand the frame of corruption will be disregarded as unworkable extremes of corrupt charlatans, by corrupt charlatans. Cursing political establishments, News mediums, religions, Monied interests, etc., will affect little more than an occasional fart brought about by the required efforts of those mustering the profanity. Until we all understand these Charlatans are a definition of "We the people", until we all understand " we the people", in fact, mirror these unglamorous piles of rot, the nation will change little. At best, I look for a few steps forward, with most dragging a foot, and sowing their own seeds of discontent along the trial of the short movement. I fear our national honesty and rightful indignation is so weighted with rot from within, it will eventually consume us, while we stupidly swallow the presentations of Phantoms of annihilation upon the various political winds. "IR's" post is a very good example.

As I said above the Benghazi-Gate Scandal just keeps getting bigger and better everyday (just like Watergate did)!

Emails on 'coming and goings' of Petraeus, other military officials escalated FBI concerns...ISAF commander Gen. John Allen under investigation over 'inappropriate' emails...FBI agent sent shirtless photo to Kelley before email investigation, officials say...Infidelity, intrigue and politics: a timeline of the David Petraeus case....First Thoughts: Like sands through the hourglass...

And that's just from today on Obama's Corporate Controlled News Media Outlet. Everyone else in the World is having a "Field Day" at Our Expense and Our Embarrassment!

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWyCCJ6B2WE

Now doesn't that sound just like President Barrack H. Obama?

So you have to "Wonder" when the rest of these other Agents, Directors, Generals & Admirals are going to start "Spilling Dirt" on the Corrupt Politicians in DC and quit supporting their Oligarch Robber Baron Masters on Wall Street instead of trying to maintain the Corrupt Political Status Quo in America!

It's a "Free For All" Folks and as American Patriots we need to be encouraging everyone of "Them" both Left & Right to "Spill It All" and let "God" and the "American People" sort out the truth!

Speaking of which watch a "True American Hero" and "General" speak out against the cause and results of these "Crimes" of Wall Street! Then watch a new PBS Documentary outlining the details.....Afterwards come back and tell US who is really Left or Right Guilty or Innocent!

                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l-8PFk8j5I

So all your Corporate Supporting Demo/Republo-RATs should stop trying to intentionally mislead America by helping to maintain the mere "Illusion of Democracy" for your SLAVE Masters on Wall Street who are still hiding unpunished from their "Crimes" against US even today!

We have surrendered Our Children's Freedom and Liberty for the Imaginary Nonsense of their "Safety"! It is time to "Wake Up" and let the "Impeachments & Prosecutions" begin!

The fall of great men is often wrought by the sins of lesser men and the damage spreads throughout the fabric of society; it can either hobble nations or bring them down. When the history of this Presidency is written, the attempted demonization of a potentially great man will bring scores to their knees and historians will shame them. It is to the citizens of America who saw through the lies that much praise is deserved and now the hope is that the President's opposing forces see beyond their jealous needs, and work for the Nation as a whole and if this makes this Presidency a great one, then the Nation will find itself once again on the Path of Greatness.

The FBI did this to discredit and embarrass the CIA and its director. With friends like these...

My two cents, it would have been better if the FBI would have kept this silent. Since their was no crime just inform the President and allow Petraus to resign without the media circus. It could have been seen as normal turnover before the next admin starts.

However, the FBI fed it to the media and those vultures lacking the latest Tiger Woods story are feasting now. Powerful men cheating with attractive younger women, not news, unfortunately this story has legs. Surely more important than our other pressing issues - sarcasm off.

If this came out before election day, would Peter King still say it was "inexcusable" for the FBI not to tell the President (a position I agree with) or would he be trying to milk it as some sort of faux administration scandal like Benghazi?

Also do we really want to go around sacking our top generals for sexual indiscretions, especially when the FBI agent that broke the case was apparently hitting on one of the women involved. I can imagine that being in a war zone, thousands of miles from home facing life or death situations, the temptation to blow off some stress by getting laid would be pretty strong to resist and should not be a career destroyer.

At this point, this is like some kind of Greek tragedy where the hero is brought down by his own innate human desire. The FBI agent who responded to Kelley's request is a lesser hero also brought down by his own desires (shirtless photo) and bias. Kelley is hardly blameless as she requests favor from the shirtless one.

It seems everyone involved is a victim of their own desire and/or bias.

As I've said before the "Real Story" isn't the "Affair".... The "Scandal" is what Paula Broadwell claims to have happened in Benghazi (the CIA's Secret & Illegal Prison) and what Obama knew about it beforehand.

I'm not sure how much it was anyone's business whether or not Petraeus could keep it zipped up, but the media exploits a story like this beyond anything civil.

Now that would be something!! Anymore conspiracy theories you'd like to front, NewM? I can fully guarantee you that if there was any real hidden substance to the Benghazi matter, people in congress like Peter King, Lindsay Graham, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnnell, and a handful of other rightwingers would be conducting a bus tour to drum up an inquisition. The true facts do not support the radical claims by uber-zealots on the fringe right. One glaring fact is that Ambassador Christopher Stevens was counseled NOT to go to Benghazi on or around the anniversary of 9/11. He ignored the advice and his travel plans were not secret. Thus, the attention was focused on the consulate instead of the embassy which was well fortified. If he had been a little less Rambo, most likely he and the other three foreign service officers would be alive today. This fact cannot be discounted in a thorough investigation but it can be ignored by those who would politicize the event for partisan advantage.

It is just their stick. It is the world we live in. As a society we have now reached the position where we argue about what news should be reported and the manner in which it should be reported. Mo, That is exactly how I feel about the news. Every morning I read WaPo and WSJ. Then the local paper in the afternoon. I also look at a bunch of news sites. Pretty much every statement of consequence needs to be independently researched to try to get to the truth. So many opposite perspectives.

Senator Fienstien is going to have a field day investigating why these republicons informed Cantor before anyone else.

                              Heads will roll.

How sad that these men to whom much responsibility has been entrusted acted so irresponsibly. That is not the kind of judgment I want in positions of importance in our government.

I really hope that the President makes it clear that he is prepared to go over the fiscal cliff. I am willing to pay more taxes in order to make sure that everyone pays their fair share. And I'm just not buying the GOP story that raising taxes will hurt job creation. Where have the job creators been while the stock market has been recovering? Raising taxes will mean that the wealthiest save a little less and I am OK with that.

How long have people been having sex? Men and women have been cheating on each other for as long as sex has been around. Its think we all need to look at this again. None of this is new. Preachers cheat, Presidents cheat, Kings cheat, Congressmen cheat, Senators cheat, and everyday people cheat. Guess what? Its going to happen again to someone else. Most of the time it happens to regular folks who don't get any press. No matter what happens its not going to stop. So lets quit making such a big deal out of it. Its only going to happen again.

Although I generally agree with your statement, in the CIA and military, this is not acceptable. Some military have been court marshalled over such actions. In the CIA, the problem is with being setup and then blackmailed to compromise something you know. The leader of the pack has to lead by example. My military friends agree.

While trying to avoid any encouragement of the media on this topic, I do have to point out the Irony (doesn't seem like a strong enough word) that the HEAD of the CIA can't keep an affair under wraps.

                              I question everything,...

and smile a bit at the big picture. I'd laugh just to not cry. Using GOOD judgment is a dying breed. And obviously 'power' is sexy. But really?

The head of the Central Intellegence Agency is a very sesitive position. That person knows thing that, if compromised, could endanger the security of this country. While it is no one's business when someone else has a tryste but when someone privy to sensitive intelegence that is quite another story. General Patraeus may not have blabbed any secrets but who knows what might have happened in the heat of such a relationship.

General Patraeus is a good man overall and we should be thankful to him for service to our country but his conduct is not what one should expect from an army officer. The mere possiblility that intelegence leaks could come from such a relationship makes this much more serious than were he not the head of the CIA and a general to boot.

GEN Allen sent 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails to one of the women tangled up in this mess and now it is all the President's doing, part of his military "purge" you see. For right wingers to espouse "personal responsibility", they sure seem to always try and hold the President and/or liberal media accountable for the actions of others.

You cannot have the head of the CIA behaving like this? What if it was a setup? What if he was being blackmailed? It may not be true in this case but the potential is there. And when you know there is a rule about this behavior and you do it anyway, well, it is on you. Just like the incoming CEO of Lockheed. He has some inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. He lost is position because it was not going to be tolerated by the BOD of Lockheed.

Does this all come down to the fact that the FBI and others involved really believed they could shelve all of this until after the elections because they really believed Romney would win and the outcome would have been totally different? When Pres O took office, there were zillions of Federal employees hired under Bush/Rove with party allegiance. It would have helped if the Obama admin had cleaned house; maybe they never did and this could be the result of that.

A scandal is a scandal, and the system will clear that up, with no winners. All involved will lose their jobs, families, etc. that is the price to pay for scandals. If security was violated, then criminal crimes should be prosecuted.
The real question is the timing, the so called lack of knowledge of the Attorney General, the Dept of Defence, the lead Security congressional members and the POTUS? How did this only become a shining star in the East 2 days after the election, when all timelines show it to be general knowledge in the FBI months before, and tracking was over a year before that?
The crime is on Pennsylvania Ave, not at the CIA headquarters.

Gov. Huntsman was another example of a man who put loyalty to the country above loyalty to his political party. And the Republicans didn't let him forget that during the primaries.

Senator Fienstien would like to know why Cantor knew about this long before anyone else did.

This sounds like a bunch of republicons breaking the laws and trying to pinit on Democrats.

Its payoff time in the White House.........Susan Rice in line for Hillary's job, John Kerry in line for cabinet job in the department of defence, and Eric Holder will be most likely get nominated for a supreme court justice. It don't get any better than this America.

Susan Rice will have a hard time being confirmed due to whatever is still out there about Libya. Holder has zero chance which I am sure Obama knows.

This whole affair is beginning to sound a lot like the Coen Brother's movie "Burn After Reading"
