It’s been a cliché in politics for the past decade to say that the I-4 Corridor in Florida is a swing area.
“Watch independents in the I-4,” has been a standard refrain from pundits as well as Democrats and Republicans alike, referring to voters along the interstate highway that cuts a swath West to East, from Tampa to North of Orlando.
But it looks like that just does not hold true anymore. Despite what was a tougher year than 2008 for President Obama, he once again ran up the score in the I-4.
The I-4 has changed quite a bit in 20 years. In fact, based on a First Read analysis of the six counties the highway passes through – Hillsborough, Polk, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, and Volusia – the I-4 Corridor has gone from about a 100,000-vote advantage for Republicans to a 100,000-vote advantage for Democrats.

Even in 2010, a year heavily tilted to Republicans, the losing Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink, won the I-4 counties by 15,000 votes.
And it’s all about demographics. In the three counties that have become more Democratic, non-white populations have doubled in a decade.
The place most responsible for the shift is Orange County, which encompasses Orlando. Republicans had a 26,000-vote advantage in the 1992 presidential race and 1,000 in 1996. But Democrats won it by 6,000 in 2000, 1,000 in 2004, and 85,000 and 84,000, respectively, in 2008 and 2012.
What's more, it's shifted even in governor’s races. In 1994 when Democrat Lawton Chiles defeated Jeb Bush, Orange went for Bush by 7,000 votes. In 1998, it was a 38,000-vote GOP advantage. It was 20,000 in 2002 and 2006, but, in 2010, Democrat Sink won it by 30,000.
Hillsborough and Osceola have also moved Democratic. Polk has remained Republican, while Volusia is the only county to trend Republican.
What explains this? Orange is now 55 percent non-white, including 28 percent Hispanic, 22 percent black and 5 percent Asian -- all groups that went overwhelmingly for Obama. In fact, according to the U.S. Census, as of 2010, the Hispanic, black and Asian populations have nearly doubled since a decade ago. There were 242,000 more Latinos (140,000), African Americans (75,000), and Asians (27,000) from 2000. At the same time, there were only 114,000 more whites - a net change of 128,000 non-whites.
Hillsborough is 48 percent non-white (25 percent Latino, 18 percent black, 4 percent Asian). The Latino population increased 70 percent from 2000 to 2010; the black population is up 37 percent; and the Asian population doubled.
Osceola is 65 percent non-white (46 percent Latino, 13 percent black, 3 percent Asian). It's the same demographic story here. The Latino, black, and Asian populations all doubled.
Volusia, on the other hand, is just 25 percent non-white. Polk is 35 percent non-white, and Seminole is 36 percent non-white. Minority growth in these counties was slower than Orange, Hillsborough, and Osceola.

It was pretty obvious that the Republican Party doubled down on the angry white man card. To survive and prosper they are going to need to make some sincere adjustments to the brand. They will need to broaden their appeal beyond a group of people who shape their world view upon talk radio.
I thought it was just some pundit getting in a dig when he said - Republicans used to stand for something, now they just stand in the way - but this ended up being the opinion of most every other demographic outside the target brand. That's the ultimate problem with rigid ideology. It makes people value being right rather than doing right. The numbers were staring them right in the face, but that rigid ideology made it impossible to see them.
I guess the only way to succeed in politics is to promise the poor that you will steal from the rich and promise the illegals that you will grant them immunity. Also, need to pander to gays and promise women that society needs to foot the bill for their birth control. This country is phucked.

Additionally,The single most interesting stat is that Romney won actual tax payers by 20 points. True, Obama took non-tax payers by 50 points. Society will rapidly fall with your core coalition.
Your primary demographic is built on a lie and your philosophical reign will be short lived mostly due to financial realities. The hype of hope and change simply costs too much.

blacks have voted 95% democratic since LBJ signed the civil rights acts in the 60s, so its not racist, given that they voted for white democratic candidates as well as black.
Should be an easy fact to prove.

I guess in 2016, the democratic party is going to have to find another african american or Latino to run, Otherwise, how are you going to win? its a fact and not racism. Look at the make up of votes.. clear to me. without the minority and low income voters, the democrats do not have a chance. OH and the young non working college kids. Letting tax rates for millionaires revert back to what they were in 2000 is not creating an "entitlement society" any more than making everyone buy insurance to pay for the same health care we've always had is a "government takeover" of health care.

Karl Rove's reputation as a campaign "genius" has really taken a beating lately. He was pathetic on FOX the other night, insisting that it wasn't over yet, even after FOX had called the election for Obama.
Did anyone else notice that the real networks were much more cautious than FOX on projecting the winner of the election or individual states for Obama? Fox consistantly had Obama with a higher electoral vote count than CNN had for him.
Watching CNN, they kept telling us that "it was still early" and "way to soon to make any projections or assumptions" and "this is going to be a really close race".
I switched over to FOX to see how they were spinning it. It was only then that I realized, "Oh my God! Obama's going to win!" LOL. You could just see it on their faces. Tucker Carlson looked like his mom died, and the blonde chick ( I forget her name) could barely conceal her anger and disappointment.
Then I switched back to CNN and the guy is frantically going over the map, county by county, and analyzing the results, and I thought, "ok too soon to tell", but then I switched back to FOX and I thought, " Oh hell no! It's over. WE WON!"
Maybe the real networks are just trying too hard to avoid the "liberal media" label?
Been telling you guys for years to pay attention to demographics. They've been projecting a white minority/spanish majority within 20 years, probably much sooner. So, to those who accept such scientific studies, what exactly does that mean?
Will it mean a growth of white supremism, a changing of the old "better dead than red" to a newer "better dead than brown"? Hitler played a similar hand of cards and sent uncounted millions of innocents to a terrible death before finally dying with a whimper hidden in his own bunker.
Will it mean a new attempt of "secession" and the attempt to form a new republic of rednecks?
Or will it mean a new look at who we are as a nation, a realization that it is through our diversity that we have our strength? Perhaps an understanding that fresh blood, new immigrants, new ideas, different perspectives....all focused on the great American Dream...........that we will reach new heights.
Might not be a bad idea to learn Spanish and help to blend all this into a beautiful new nation. Tacos taste good.

It seems to be only the northeast coastal states and west coast states that have little or no thought process going on. Actually, as another commmentor noted (not sure who to credit), it is more an urban/rural divide, with those who dwell among rats much more comfortable with Demoncrat policies.

I mean no offense to God and believe and see what you do, but the idea that simple numbers mean a total cultural shift is appalling. I've been to Lima and found Peruvians to be the most cultured and aesthetically beautiful people of South America but the people I seen invading (yes shrek you pc passive POS) our borders have drained the system dry. I work in an area with a large hispanic influence. I see things I don't like everyday. What asses like shrek see as culture I see as abuses of a way too generous system.

You have some valid points, probably the main one being the way the Spanish neighborhoods tend to ignore our culture and refuse to learn English (you didn't actually say that but I inferred it). I think that problem is one that can be worked on. I would love to see some reciprocity, like mandating the speaking of English for any immigrants. Good for the goose, good for the gander. What I had originally mentioned, maybe not clearly enough, is that rather than "draw the line in the sand" we learn to blend all these changes and differences into a workable whole.
There are certainly "abuses of the system", but be honest now. There is rampant abuse down on the bottom levels (in spanish, black, and poor white communities) but also rampant abuse in the top echelons of corporate america. Which need fixing the most? Maybe both levels. Which is the most costly to our system? I leave that for more informed to decide.
Agree with you 100% but I'm looking from the inside out and you vice versa. I live in Manhattan - probably as diverse an area as you can find in the US - both ethnically and economically. Being solidly in the middle I can clearly see the huge numbers below and very few above. I hate nor envy either and started (yes as a white male) at the bottom without any assistance other then military service which allowed for educational benefits on release from service. Believe it or not (aside fro the hurricane and yesterdays nor'easter) life in the states is still good - but my wife and I have to work hard, too hard, to maintain our home and provide our children education. The attitude with too many of these brain dead liberals is that poor/black/immigrant/name your group need endless amounts of support to make it today is exhausting in how endless it is. I receive less and less and more work simply doesn't seem to help. the recipients collectively simply do not express gratitude, but more like distain, not satisfied and demanding more. It's amazing.
I've lived in Jamaica, BWI for 2 1/2 years and understand multiculturalism but you usually at least try to assimilate to the nations you call you new home.

These can be called the plantation owners. 2) Those who pay no taxes, and really don't desire to earn enough to do so, as long Uncle Sammy can send them a little more, pay for their health care, food stamps. The Demoncrats make sure that their ambition is squashed, that having to pay tax rates that punish their work or success is amplified, and that anyone who questions the Demoncrat system and thinks for himself is slandered. These are the slaves - they are punished if they leave the Demoncrat plantation.

Orange County has the second largest university in the country and the university has been growing tremendously over the last decade. The students are, by far, predominantly Democrat. Those that graduate, stay in the area, making the county Democrat. Hillsborough has another very large university. Perhaps I am wrong, but I think that this is the dominant reason for the changing political standing.
Florida never carried a Republican until Bush. That election was a scam and a half. And Jeb Bush was governor. It was bought. The punch cards, not accepting absentee ballots, no early votes counted, et.,etc..
As much as Republicans claim to hate Government.. They always seem to want to be in it.
Paul Ryan's Budget (the GOP celebrated 'Romney-Ryan Budget') was a nasty piece of Survival of the Fittest --Social Darwinism.. attempting to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and sick while giving out even more tax cuts.. in fact his budget didn't balance the budget but the cuts in the social safety nets would in fact finance the big upper-income tax cuts.

All these pundits and Republicans are trying to say Obama's victory was because of changing demographics. Folks, he won Wisconsin. If its the Hispanics in Wisconsin, that is one hell of a powerful 6.1%, totally overwhelming their 88.4% white majority.
Wow...there are some really pissed off Angry White "men" (AWM) here. They always say they're going but they never seem to leave...don't let the door hit you...we're all tired of the whining, namecalling, and faux thinking. You lost. Cry a river, build a bridge, and get the hell over it. We have to fix what you folks broke, whether you want us to or not.
I live in Volusia County and let me tell whomever wrote the article, I know EXACTLY why this county leans Republican. It happened right about the time that Cox News did what amounted to a hostile takeover of our local family owned daily paper. (See: Daytona Beach News-Journal on Wikipedia and note what the judge did to this family) As soon as they did, we got RIGHT WING BS stuffed down our throats...the letters to the editor took a hard right slant, as did their reporting of the news.
We went to Tampa on vacation and was amazed to see how great their paper was...we had forgotten what UNBIASED news was like. This whole entire election campaigning season (read: two years) has been a neverending complaint about Obama every single day in the paper...It was almost like having Fix "news" on paper! (Cal Thomas is definitely an AWM...I got to know him ALL TOO WELL. UGH...made me go want to feel clean again by voting for a Democrat! :D)
And yet we still kept getting this crappy paper. For the sports, my husband said.
And then there was a scandal about a certain coach in Pennsylvania and he could barely stand to look at the sports page...but we still get it...
It's over now. We WON! THANK GOD those fascists didn't take over our government...YET.
But I don't need to see what the other side says, anymore. I don't need to give my hard earned money to someone I completely and totally disagree with. I am pretty sure that others are following suit...they've even published a few letters to the same point, in their pretense to show the other side - a form of Faux "news" "Fair and balanced", as it were. And in case anyone wonders, I am from America, I am about as pale, lily white as you can get (as is my husband) and we VOTE DEMOCRAT. I am no longer young, either. Not young enough to think I know everything, anyway. ;)
But I do know this. WE WON - ALL of us won, whether these AWM realize it or not...we have to live in this world after they are long gone and they'd better stop messing it up with their WRONG and BIGOTED ideas...This election proved it. So, anyway, even Volusia County isn't COMPLETELY Republican. ;)
Now it will be a contest to see which party can give the most to the Latino population...disgusting.
I did not suppose for one second that Mitt Romney stood an ice-cube's chance in Hell of winning this election and I remained steadfast to this notion because he controlled none of the voting blocks across the US with the exception of white racist and envious blacks! Mitt Romney tried to LIE his way into the White House and the only surprise worthy of notice is that he did as well as he did in some areas.

Neither Mitt Romney nor the antiquated Party he represents had a smidgen of a chance because they had offended nearly every voting block needed to win a general election which comprises voters from ALL persons of ethnicity and/or ALL demographics! The Republican party must now learn the lesson of compromise or they will never again occupy this nation's Oval Office. Times have changed and people in general have changed with it but the GOP remains stuck in the dismal life cycle known as the "past!" Even with such a resounding loss however, I seriously doubt that the stubborn, hate-filled, non-conformist, cave dwelling attitude, known as the Republican Party platform, will return to Washington with renewed insight. They will remain forever lost and forever; the great obstructionist Party of no compromise! What a shame for this United States of America!?!

Probably grew out of the century of Demoncrat racial segregation in the south. What a great tradition the Demoncrats have of fomenting racial hatred of all kinds. Now that it is Anglos, the Demoncrats have probably hated evryone equally at one time or another. The party of inclusion.

Let me break it down so that even an imbecile can comprehend what truly happened:
When Mitt said he would end Planned Parenthood; he lost millions of female voters.
When he said that he would NOT sign the 'Dream Act', he lost millions of Hispanics!
When he said that he and Ryan would change benefits for the elderly to a voucher system; he lost millions of elderly voters.
When the Republicans delayed in signing a measure to help college students; he lost millions of college age voters.
When Mitt refused to answer how he would have voted on the Lilly Ledbetter Act, he lost millions more female voters.
When he pounced on food stamps and other so-called give-aways; he lost millions more because many of the people now receiving food stamps and other Federal help are those who were displaced by Katrina and by the gulf oil spill and other natural and unnatural disasters and these are decent people who need to eat and feed their families, with no income, due to the above facts. Millions have been displaced but the GOP has not kept in line with changing times so they lost millions more who need these gov't programs in order to continue until they can do better.
The Republicans want to do away with college grants and loans; even PELL grants which has helped so many students. They had to be forced to give the middle class a tax break but they cheerfully gave tax breaks to the already uber wealthy. This cost the GOP millions more voters.
The Republican Party held up unemployment payments to millions who were waiting on that money to pay their bills. I didn't forget that and I was not affected by it but those who were; do you think they forgot? THEY DIDN'T! Here yet again, the GOP lost millions of voters!
The GOP tried to get rid of the labor unions in states where people favor the labor unions and in Michigan people lost their entire communities based upon a never used clause in their laws and by-laws which made it possible for one person to control the entire state; which meant that this one person could take over and even remove elected officials...and he did! The people did not forget nor overlook this clause after that; and on Election Day; they ALL showed up to voice their discontent.
Most blacks were NEVER going to vote for Mitt; PERIOD! That simply wasn't going to happen! Black people know from whence cometh their help and they will never vote for any FOOL who threatens their livelihood or drops them right along with the other 47% and Ryan's 37%! Did you all honestly think that blacks would vote for Mitt? Remember what Newt said about going to the NAACP and "teaching them how to get off welfare and food stamps and earn a paycheck?" Remember that? Blacks certainly remembered that insult on Election Day which is why they endured rain, sleet, snow, and even the call of Mother Nature to make sure that FOOL would not win! Blacks are not lazy; their lost! That's a BIG difference!!! They are NOT looking for handouts, they are looking for a way out! Out of poverty and broken down tenements; rat and roach infested apartments. They don't want drugs and crackheads in their neighborhoods any more than you do but they have few choices...they look desperately for opportunities. I got out! And I would do nearly anything to help anyone else who is also trying to get out! White folks don't understand this because they call such help; give-aways...that's how we know they don't understand the situation.
The truth is; the Republicans fell asleep behind the wheel with ignorant comments made by Todd Akin and others like him. The GOP offended nearly every demographic and every voting block in this nation and then were imbecilic enough to believe they could still win the general; how? How were they going to pull that off? They couldn't...and they didn't!!!

You can reverse engineer a linear tracking poll with aggregate compensation and self-actualizing data until the cows come home.
The FACT is you can't outright insult 47% of the voters and alienate 1/2 of the other 53% and win what's basically a popularity contest.
