Three days until Election Day, President Barack Obama maintains his lead in the key battleground state of Ohio and is locked in a close contest with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Florida, according to new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls.
In Ohio, Obama holds a six-point advantage over Romney among likely voters, 51 percent to 45 percent, which is unchanged from last month’s poll in the Buckeye State.
And in Florida, the president gets support from 49 percent of likely voters, while his GOP challenger gets 47 percent. Those numbers are virtually identical to the ones from October, when it was Obama 48 percent, Romney 47 percent.
Both states are two of the biggest prizes in Tuesday’s presidential contest. An Obama victory in Ohio, which awards 18 electoral votes, would put him tantalizingly close to getting to the 270 electoral votes needed to win a second term.

But an Obama loss in the Buckeye State – and a Romney win – would place a hole in the president’s Midwest firewall.
Meanwhile, Florida, which awards 29 electoral votes, is a must-win state for Romney. A Republican loss there would push Obama past 270 electoral votes – even if the president lost every other battleground state in NBC’s current map.
Obama ahead with early voters
As with the recent NBC/WSJ/Marist polls of Iowa and Wisconsin, Obama is benefitting from early voters in Ohio and Florida.
In the Sunshine State, 63 percent say they have already voted or plan to do so before Election Day, and Obama is winning them, 53 percent to 46 percent. But Romney is ahead among Election Day voters in Florida, 52 percent to 40 percent.
In Ohio, 35 percent say they have already voted or plan to do so, and Obama is leading them, 62 percent to 36 percent. Yet Romney is up among Election Day voters in the Buckeye State, 52 percent to 42 percent.
Strong approval for the president’s handling of Sandy
The polls were conducted after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, and seven in 10 likely voters in Florida and Ohio approve of the president’s job in handling the hurricane and its aftermath.
“The response was overwhelmingly positive, and that was occurring across party lines,” says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.
On handling the economy
Meanwhile, Romney has a slight advantage over Obama in Florida when it comes to which candidate would better handle the economy – 48 percent pick Romney and 46 percent back Obama.

But those numbers are reversed in Ohio, where 48 percent believe Obama would better handle the economy and 46 percent side with Romney.
On party ID
In these surveys, Democrats enjoy a nine-point party-identification advantage in Ohio and a two-point edge in Florida. Republicans have argued that a nine-point advantage is too large in this current political environment; it was eight points in the Buckeye State during Obama’s decisive 2008 victory.
If you cut that party ID advantage in half, Obama’s six-point lead in Ohio is reduced to three points.
Other numbers in the poll
Obama’s job-approval rating among likely voters stands at 48 percent in Florida and 50 percent in Ohio.

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.
In Ohio’s Senate contest, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown leads Republican Josh Mandel by five points among likely voters, 50 percent to 45 percent.

And the survey of Ohio was conducted Oct. 31-Nov.1 of 971 likely voters, and it has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

Reasons for the depression: Bush tax cuts, Bush's wars, Wall street collapse, Banks tanking, Housing market collapsing, auto industry failing etc. Obama walked into a bigger mess than what he expected and had to get us out of the mess without any help from the Republicans who now are yelling at him for not doing it faster and better. They talk about freedom but they want to force women to undergo intrusive unnecesasary procedures, they want to stop gays from marrying, they want to control women from planning their family, they want to disenfranchise voters - there is no voter fraud there is voter suppression fraud. Even though they have been paying less taxes for 12 years they are falsley hiding behind the name "tea party" and what they hide is their social agenda. Romney lies about jeep moving to China but even if it is true I thought that that is what they want - the freedom to move jobs out of US, freedom to move money to Caymen islands. My husband worked for 4 different factories in the midwest and they all moved to China and Mexico during Bush years. Where was the outcry? That was the free market manthra and now all of a sudden Romney is indignant about jobs moving to China? Vote for Romney and see more tax cuts going to the rich more spendig for defense and cut on medicare, social security, education, no infrastructure rebuilding which is sorely needed and keep hoping that s l o w l y the wealth will trickle down to you while more money will go to Caymen island.

Bush tax cuts were passed soon after he took office OKAY now it is Obama's tax cuts. Obama was hels hostage by the Republicans to extend the tax cuts and Obama did the dirty deal compromise. Look at the number of filibusters during Bush years and Obama years.
Obama wasn't held hostage to anything, he had no choice but continue the tax cuts or face his own party's anger and he knew it.
Mitt keeps saying, "I'm a businessman, I know what it takes to get our moving in the right direction." Many venturte capital firms pursue a model of invest, restructure and divest. The time frame is short-term. The shorter the investment period the better. Restructure means how do we make the balance sheet look more attractive. From an accounting standpoint that not always overly difficult. Venture capital restructuring does not take into account long term growth potential, expanding revenue streams, building brand recognition etc, etc. Their actions are short term with their only concern being the highest return on their equity stake. They don't any long term effects of there actions. It's not there concern. I've been there. I've dealt with VC. That is not a businessman. Mitt wasn't hired by Bain because he was one of the business scdhool superstars. He was hired because he had the money to invest in Bain's venture capital pool and he lived in a world of potential investors. He might as well be telling everyone what a great baseball player he was. We just have to ignore the fact that he was born on third base and his father holds the mortgage on the umpire's house. If Mitt is elected his investors probably get a great return. The rest of us....maby my son will end up fighting in one his wars.

Bush's economy was great until the last 4 months. The Fannie and Freddie housing bubble began to bust under the watchful eye of Senators Biden and Obama in a democrat controlled House AND Senate. Why didn't Obama and Biden do something to prevent the housing bust? Obviously, Obama had no more experience than voting 'present'. Obama had absolutely no experience to run for president and all you Obama supporters have absolutely no useful intelligence to add to the national debate given that you voted for a complete incompetent moron.
We will see Wednesday if the majority of Americans are still idiots. I voluntarily enlisted in the military during the Vietnam War, to fight for this country, while some "americans" burned their draft cards and headed for Canada. I don't care who Obama's mentor is or was. Obama is NOT my Idol.
