Three days until Election Day, President Barack Obama maintains his lead in the key battleground state of Ohio and is locked in a close contest with Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Florida, according to new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls.
In Ohio, Obama holds a six-point advantage over Romney among likely voters, 51 percent to 45 percent, which is unchanged from last month’s poll in the Buckeye State.
And in Florida, the president gets support from 49 percent of likely voters, while his GOP challenger gets 47 percent. Those numbers are virtually identical to the ones from October, when it was Obama 48 percent, Romney 47 percent.
Both states are two of the biggest prizes in Tuesday’s presidential contest. An Obama victory in Ohio, which awards 18 electoral votes, would put him tantalizingly close to getting to the 270 electoral votes needed to win a second term.

But an Obama loss in the Buckeye State – and a Romney win – would place a hole in the president’s Midwest firewall.
Meanwhile, Florida, which awards 29 electoral votes, is a must-win state for Romney. A Republican loss there would push Obama past 270 electoral votes – even if the president lost every other battleground state in NBC’s current map.
Obama ahead with early voters
As with the recent NBC/WSJ/Marist polls of Iowa and Wisconsin, Obama is benefitting from early voters in Ohio and Florida.
In the Sunshine State, 63 percent say they have already voted or plan to do so before Election Day, and Obama is winning them, 53 percent to 46 percent. But Romney is ahead among Election Day voters in Florida, 52 percent to 40 percent.
In Ohio, 35 percent say they have already voted or plan to do so, and Obama is leading them, 62 percent to 36 percent. Yet Romney is up among Election Day voters in the Buckeye State, 52 percent to 42 percent.
Strong approval for the president’s handling of Sandy
The polls were conducted after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast, and seven in 10 likely voters in Florida and Ohio approve of the president’s job in handling the hurricane and its aftermath.
“The response was overwhelmingly positive, and that was occurring across party lines,” says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.
On handling the economy
Meanwhile, Romney has a slight advantage over Obama in Florida when it comes to which candidate would better handle the economy – 48 percent pick Romney and 46 percent back Obama.

But those numbers are reversed in Ohio, where 48 percent believe Obama would better handle the economy and 46 percent side with Romney.
On party ID
In these surveys, Democrats enjoy a nine-point party-identification advantage in Ohio and a two-point edge in Florida. Republicans have argued that a nine-point advantage is too large in this current political environment; it was eight points in the Buckeye State during Obama’s decisive 2008 victory.
If you cut that party ID advantage in half, Obama’s six-point lead in Ohio is reduced to three points.
Other numbers in the poll
Obama’s job-approval rating among likely voters stands at 48 percent in Florida and 50 percent in Ohio.

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.
In Ohio’s Senate contest, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown leads Republican Josh Mandel by five points among likely voters, 50 percent to 45 percent.
And in Florida’s Senate contest, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson leads Republican Connie Mack by nine, 52 percent to 43 percent.
The NBC/WSJ/Marist poll of Florida was conducted Oct. 30-Nov. 1 of 1,545 likely voters, and it has a margin of error of plus-minus 2.5 percentage points.
And the survey of Ohio was conducted Oct. 31-Nov.1 of 971 likely voters, and it has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

@ Gary Hanson. What state do you live in? Have you ever thought about why a law like that was passed? I don't live in either state but if you came to my home and tried to take from or harm me or my family, I would happily "stand my ground" law or not. I'm not a fan of florida myself but there are reasons that laws come about. Maybe it will be amended and become a more useful protection for the people but keep in mind that it came about for specific reasons.
The law came about because the NRA have people going around to states backing organizations to put those laws on the books because they believe that anyone should be able to have any gun that they want. The other reason is; the prosecutors have decided to prosecute self-defenders and juries have awarded large sums of money to perpetrators of home invasion when people who have legitimately defended themselves. I'm all for people protecting their families, but come on! do we need machine guns to do that. It seems that we go to far in one direction and the push back go to far in the other direction and it just keep escalating.

It means that you are not very informed or you refuse to see what is obvious to the most casual observer. This president from day one has been the target of the most vitriol hatred in the history of this country. Addison Mitchell McConnell said very early on that the goal of the republicans was to make him a one term president. In case you don't know what that means; It means that they will do what ever it takes to make him fail. In the process America will fail but they don't care. All they care about is ideology. You try working with some one who is trying to body slam you and see how long you keep trying. He had to go to the people and let every one know what he was up against.
He tried working with Boehner. Matter of fact they had a deal at one point and the house republicans POO POOed every thing he put forth.
As for the war on women; The republicans in the house started that. Instead of working on employing Americans, they introduced 134 pieces of legislation concerning women's reproduction. The "Electorial college" SHOULD be the same in every state..Every state should have TWO electorial college votes..That way EVERYONES vote is worth the same..The way it stands now, you can win 15 states and win the election..Everyones vote should have the same value..This way the candidates would have to campaign in EVERY STATE instead of a handful like it is today{Ask Ohio voters if they are getting sick of the ads}..The winner{president} would have to work for ALL 50 states instead of favoring one industry over another..
Example...how much stimulus money was poured into Michigan and Ohio..Then ask yourself, how much stimulus money was poured into Wyoming or South Dakota or even Mississippi ??

So you think your vote will "count" IF the election is done by popular vote???..Do you live in Chicago, Los Angles,Houston, New York, Washing D.c ?? A BIG metro city with a HUGE polpulation??..Then if you dont you're vote is not worth a damn..Do you know that just the population of NEW York City is GREATER than the states of Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota,South Dakota, Deleware, Alaska,Hawaii, New Hampshire, Rhode island, AND Montana ...COMBINED.....So if every person in New York City were to vote ONE WAY it could nulify 10 STATES.. So do you STILL think that eliminating the "Electrial College" in favor of "just"the popular vote is the way to go?..I'll agree with you that the popular vote should be the determining factor, but just in that state..If you win the popular vote in say michigan..you get TWO electorial votes..If you win the popular vote in California..You get TWO electorial college votes..You would have to win atleast 26 states to be elected..The MAJORITY..That way, the little states with the least population COULDN"T be drowned out by the largest cities, or biggest population states..If the election was ONLY tied to the popular vote, you could conceivably win 10 states and win the electionThe candidates would ONLY campaign in LARGE CITIES if the popular vote ruled because in some rural states the Largest City in that state has more people in it that most of the rest of the state..
I see your point, there are just to many variables; on the other hand a large number of low populated states could elect a president over a small number of states with an overall larger population than the lower populated states. Someone is going to feel disenfranchised no mater which way you slice it. It's never going to be perfect.
